Just renovated the WikiProject Kentucky template

OK, I just completed a major renovation of {{WikiProject Kentucky}}. Please report any issues to me and I'll fix them at the earliest possible moment. Thanks! Stevie is the man! TalkWork 02:47, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Stevie, why did you slice and dice the membership list? --Spacini 21:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

No slicing or dicing. It was just moved to a subpage. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 21:29, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
My apologies. I should have paid more attention. It's much better with your changs.

--Spacini 02:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Breaking down into subpages (like WPLouisville)

I just wanted to gauge interest in breaking down the project page into subpages or departments, like what is done in WikiProject Louisville. It has turned out to be a much cleaner approach, in my opinion. Thoughts? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 15:34, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I would support elements of this change. The membership department would help the page flow, as our list is becoming unwieldy. However, I'd prefer the Hall of Fame stay up-front, as I think it encourages people to try and get more articles listed there.
While we're on the subject, It seems we've completely dropped the ball on the Focus of the Month. We need to move that section down or remove it completely. The fact that we still have nominations open for November, and no one has added one or made any significant improvements to the current noms in months makes our project look a little dead. Acdixon 16:16, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
OK, I can start by creating a membership department. And I agree that the Focus of the Month isn't working, as it wasn't working in WPLouisville either. What I did for Louisville was delete it off the project page, but didn't delete the focus page, in case we decide to use it later. Sound like a plan? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:48, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Works for me. We'll need to do some more work to the project page at some point, but this is a good start. Acdixon 17:52, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Speaking of which, I have started doing a rough up of a possible new front page/daughter pages of the Project on my User Space. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. My main concern is to shorten the pages so that they are not OMG long. The link for the draft is User:Soldan/wpkydraft. Please feel free to mark up and change things as you want. The navigation box isn't flushed out all the way for the draft, as I didn't see a need for a billion talk pages under my user space. Thanks for time and attention Soldan 15:58, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Good idea. Is the infobox based on a design from another wikiproject? If so, that would be good for maintaining similarity between projects. I might do the same for WikiProject Louisville. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:31, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I ganked the basis for the infobox from WP: Military History. I'm gonna work more on that project in free time at work, and see what all I can come up with. Soldan 16:49, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I also like the infobox. Since we're planning to redesign the page anyway, let me get this part straight. Do we need to edit the scope section to mention that articles about Louisville are part of WikiProject Louisville, articles about the Bluegrass region are in WikiProject Bluegrass region, etc.? I had been using both WikiProject Kentucky and the appropriate subproject banner, but it looks like WikiProject Louisville has been replacing the WikiProject Kentucky banner, so I started doing that, using both only for highly notable items to both projects (e.g. Frankfort, Kentucky goes both in WikiProject Kentucky and WikiProject Bluegrass Region). Acdixon 17:42, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
A copyedit of the Scope section in this regard sounds good to me. In most cases, it's not necessary for both WPKY and a subproject to provide coverage for an article, with special exceptions as you say. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 17:49, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Cool. I will rough something up. Is it just the three of us that are active on this project? Or do we have other active voices?Soldan 19:06, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
As far as being active on the project itself, I think it's just us three amigos. However, I have seen Dale Arnett still making Kentucky-related changes now and again. I used to see Seicer and Chris24 around a lot more than I have lately. There's also a new guy, Veracious Rey, but so far about all I've noticed from him is edits about Boone County. Acdixon 19:14, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Hopefully they'll start being more vocal. On regards to the project page, I am thinking of scratching the "News" section from the front page, to move it to a rear, and use our front page mainly to show our scope, some tasks at hand, and thinks like templates, including how to use them (similar to the WP Military History site.Soldan 19:19, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I could support that with one caveat. I think we need a prominent place to make announcements like the completion of the assessment system. Acdixon 19:45, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
No qualms with that. We can put a pressing news box on the front page, but not news from say "We founded on...".Soldan 19:57, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Question regarding the split b/t WP Kentucky and WP Louisville and WP BR.

I do not understand why the project was split into smaller projects (WP Louisville, and WP Bluegrass Region). It seems to me that it would of been beneficial to everyone by making a Louisville Task Force, and a BR Task force, which would of in turn kept FA's and the like from those areas in house. However, it is done now, and as such I don't think we can do much about it, but if say there is ever a want for a WP Purchase... we make a task force.Soldan 19:19, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Too late for that. There's already a long precedent for city-based wikiprojects. Besides that, do we really want to manage several thousand pages in one project? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:30, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
On the other hand, a case can be made for not creating child projects when there's not much material to cover under them. KYOVA might be a good example here. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:32, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I see both sides here. I can pretty much understand the desire for a separate project for Louisville, but not so much for Bluegrass Region (maybe Lexington) and definitely not for KYOVA. I'm from one of those usually neglected areas of Kentucky, and I pretty much made a one-man task force for Western Coal Fields for a while. I do lament the fact that we now only have 2 Featured and 1 Good Article with the removal of the Louisville articles. We lose some more potentially Good and Featured when we take out Lexington and Ashland. Acdixon 19:43, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
The task force basis, as is used in WP:WAR each task force acts akin to its own Project, but it all comes under the head of the Project. Basically it's the same thing as what has happened, but without neutering the state project.Soldan 20:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Definitely a great argument can be made for making regions into task forces rather than separate projects. Further, with regards to the best Louisville articles, I think it would be all right to feature them in a future Kentucky portal as part of the mix of other Kentucky articles that are featured. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:13, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
That last bit actually made me feel better. I was mainly worried about the baby projects neutering the parent if you know what I mean. But if it is kosher to show off the best Louisville articles here as well, to help show off the state, then I have no qualms at all on the matter.Soldan 20:29, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Now that you mention it, I guess it does make sense if they are descendant WikiProjects to feature their Good and Featured articles in the parent project's Hall of Fame. Perhaps we should note which ones come from descendant WikiProjects, though, so there isn't confusion between the numbers showing in the assessment table and the number of articles in the Hall of Fame. Who'd like to do the honors? Acdixon 20:37, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Works for me. I can add the ones from Louisville. I'm not sure of the best way to mark what descendant projects they come from, but that can always be easily modified. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 21:11, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

User is making major changes to Kentucky's category system

Just wanted to alert everyone that Hmains is making major changes to our category system. Perhaps he will explain to us what he is doing. Otherwise, we have major revert work to do. Arghh. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 22:41, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

violation of WP policy

Today I was subjected to the following statements by one of your members:

Please stop reworking Kentucky categories. No notice was given to WikiProject Kentucky. The way they are being changed is unacceptable. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 22:33, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

You have to clear any changes with WikiProject Kentucky. If you don't, I'm reverting every change you make. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 23:10, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Clearly, this editor is wrong. Being in a project gives an editor no special privileges regarding editing and no special claim that all edits have to be cleared through him or his project. Is your project prepared to correct this situation? Thanks Hmains 05:44, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

You were changing Kentucky categories without clearing through this project. It's a matter of courtesy! Do you not understand courtesy? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:57, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
Further, I think you will need to state the specific policy violation in play here. Just saying there's a violation doesn't make a violation. Projects are set up to oversee sets of articles and other sorts of pages. And your changes were found to be disagreeable by one member, me, of this project. Your arguments in favor of the changes were unacceptable to me. I've broken no policy. We just have an editing disagreement. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 17:02, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Stub questions

Here's a philosophical question I must ask in regard to the rating of articles as "stubs". For a few of the articles I have created, I have used all available resources--not simply web searches--to write the article. Although the article may be short (e.g., Kenny Price), does that warrant a stub rating? I have contributed to several print encyclopedias and several of those articles would be considered stubs simply because the editors have limited the number of words for the article. While that is not a Wikipedia consideration, are we correctly rating articles or simply evaluating their lengths and assuming that they are stubs? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Spacini (talkcontribs) 21:52, 13 January 2007 (UTC).

Per the assessment system, very short length can qualify an article as a stub, but if there is significant useful content, short articles should rise to start class. That being said, while doing ratings en masse, I have been guilty of making a snap judgment based on length. If you would like an article reassessed, please note it on the appropriate place on the assessment page. Acdixon 22:54, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm with Acdixon on this one. I too could be considered guilty when doing the ratings en masse to just make a snap decision based on length. However, I try to save the stub rating for those articles that have the stub tag on them, or obviously stubs.Soldan 14:14, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Possible Good Article - William Goebel

So I was bored today and made a stop at the library with my wife. I picked up a few books that had some good info on William Goebel. The previous article was 99% copyvio, so I cleaned it up with citations. I think it might be about ready for a good article nom now. Anybody care to give it a once-over for careless mistakes that might get flagged in a review before I nominate it? Acdixon 05:44, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

I looked it over. It looks good.Soldan 14:14, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

New Article - James William "Honest Dick" Tate

In some of my recent reading, I have run across an interesting character known as "Honest Dick" Tate, a Kentucky treasury secretary who took off with $250,000 from the state's treasury in March 1888. I figure he's worth at least a stub on Wikipedia, but I don't know how to title the article. "Honest Dick" Tate doesn't seem like the appropriate title, but apparently James W. Tate is a famous poet, and there is another James Tate that is a politician, so James Tate (politician) isn't specific enough either. Suggestions? Acdixon 16:48, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I would suggest that if he was known as "Honest Dick" Tate, then titling it as "Honest Dick" Tate would be appropriate enough. Failing that, naming it James "Honest Dick" Tate might not be a bad idea either.Soldan 16:30, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Proposed revamp of List of counties in Kentucky

I was thinking about the List of counties in Kentucky, and I'd like to change it to look more like this. I think the fields in the proposed list are more interesting, and perhaps more useful, as some of the data on the existing list is only current as of the 2000 census. I'm not sure how many red links we might end up with, but hopefully, not enough to prevent a featured list nomination. Please give me your feedback. Acdixon 14:49, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

I would prefer that the Census numbers stay because it helps to understand relative populations. Further, there might be newer adjusted Census numbers (maybe from 2005?) available that could be added to the table.
It also wouldn't be unheard of to have a second table of secondary statistics for all the counties. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 15:32, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
By the way, I love the idea of showing the county positions on the maps. Would we be the first state to have such a list? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 15:34, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Not sure. I haven't looked at what other states have done. So, are you proposing moving the existing list to something like List of census data about Kentucky counties and putting my proposed list at List of counties in Kentucky, or making them part of the same article, or what? We could just add a column for "2000 population" to my proposed list to get relative populations. I'm not sure how useful household data, breakdown of area by land and water, and housing unit density are. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Acdixon (talkcontribs) 15:53, 18 January 2007 (UTC).
Same article. The other data is almanac data, but should be useful to others. I don't think we should be excluding it, for sure. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:29, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
More like this, then? Acdixon 16:42, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Looks good to me. Thanks for working that up so quickly. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:58, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
Not a problem; glad you like it. I'll try to turn this sucker out in a day or two. I'm pretty convinced we can get it through a Featured List review without too much trouble. BTW, if anyone else would like to comment, I'm still open for suggestions. Acdixon 17:07, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Request re:project template

Hi, I was wondering if you could modify your project template so that it has a parameter to appear in a smaller version on talk pages i.e. {{WikiProject Kentucky|importance=top|class=B|small=yes}}. Otherwise if attempts are made to make all tags on a talk page small versions, your template can create quite a mess- see this version of the Abraham Lincoln talk page for an example of what I mean. Thank you, WJBscribe 13:19, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

You are asking us to change the template for issues on one talk page? The 'small' parameter makes the template code rather messy. I would prefer to avoid it. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 14:04, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
I was pointing out that most projects have set up their tag so they can have a small version. I simply offered one example. The problem of talkpages getting over-cluttered with tags is a growing one. I'm not saying there is an urgent need for a smaller version of your template, but I hope it is something you will work on reasonably soon. WJBscribe 14:14, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Now complete. Enjoy. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 05:32, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Invitation template for WPKY

Might it be a good idea to create an "invitation template" for our WikiProject? Whenever I see an editor make constructive edits to a Kentucky-related article, I check their contribution history. If it includes a significant number of Kentucky-related edits, I try to leave an invitation to the project on their talk page. My standard blurb goes something like this:

Your recent edits seem to indicate that you have some local knowledge of Kentucky. If so, perhaps you would like to join WikiProject Kentucky, a project for the creation, expansion, and improvement of articles related to the state of Kentucky. Check out our project page, and if you like what you see, join us by adding your name to our membership list. Hope to see you at WikiProject Kentucky!

If we dressed this up with our "logo" and made it a template, it'd be easier for us to include on talk pages and might attract new editors to the project. Thoughts? Acdixon 16:18, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

This is a great idea. I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing for WikiProject Louisville. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:29, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
I've never created a template before, but this sounds like an easy one to get started with. Do I just create Template:WPKYInvite and start editing? Acdixon 17:16, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes. But you may want to copy in a similar example and just tweak it to your tastes. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 18:15, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Cool. How's this?

I like the content, but the design is more like that used for project banners. I would recommend using something that looks like a barnstar box. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:42, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
The template above should be updated. Does that look better? Acdixon 19:51, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Looks great! The only thing I would change is that "WikiProject Kentucky" under the project image should link to the project. Mind if I steal your work for WikiProject Louisville? :) Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:08, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
Not at all. After all, I did steal your whole assessment system page! Thanks for the help. Acdixon 20:54, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Archiving by the month

We've had quite a bit of chatter throughout January on here... any problems if we 'clean the slate' and archive it for January 2007, just to keep the page clean and manageable? There are quite a few discussions I don't think we will be revisiting. Soldan 19:19, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Going on partial wikibreak

Hey all, I'm going on a "partial wikibreak" for the forseeable future so I can put more time into other projects. That means I will just do two check-in's a day to review and respond to changes in my watchlist and talk page. I have to be honest and say I won't be able to participate in any major efforts or discussions during this time. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 21:40, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Abraham Lincoln

Checking the archives, I note that there was a discussion as to the size of the WikiProject Kentucky's tag being too large? Is this the reason it is not currently tagged as a WikiProject Kentucky article? SonPraises 11:16, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Looks like all the WikiProject tags for that article have been moved to a hidden block that can be shown by clicking the "Show" link. Thanks for keeping a watch on that, though. It's one of the most important articles in the project, although I haven't had the guts to start cleaning it up. Acdixon 17:20, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
I fixed the tag a while back to support the 'small' parameter. But the reason it's not visible (at first) is because of what Acdixon said. Hopefully, hidden blocks like that will be used very sparingly, because we're losing a lot of good attention that the Lincoln article could bring us. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:23, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Stevie, I didn't know you modified the template to support the small parameter. Thanks for the heads-up. It's not needed often, but where it is, I think that will be a real plus. Thanks for your work! Acdixon 19:40, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Welcome. :) Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:10, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Appalachian Mountains, Appalachian English

My reading of the scope of WikiProject Kentucky tends to make me think that the articles Appalachian Mountains and Appalachian English fall well within those parameters, so I've tagged them. The Appalachian Mts. article, for example has been tagged for several state projects.

Of course if the tagging is contrary to consensus view, they should be removed, but my strong sense is that for good or ill the larger view outside the state is that a Kentuckian is an Appalachian which was reconfirmed watching Primal Fear for a second time last night. SonPraises 02:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree that those articles can be reasonably tagged for the project. In fact, I consider it one of the missions of the project to change the negative perceptions of Kentucky that you mention. Even though Appalachia does have some negatives, it also has unique cultural elements that should be celebrated (it's music, etc.) Acdixon 13:42, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
I think this tagging is correct. While the whole state doesn't qualify as Appalachian, a substantial portion does. Letcherwater (talk) 16:31, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Introduction (and a question)

Hello! I am new to projects on Wikipedia, and I believe that this would be a great place to start learning. Any help or information would be appreciated; I am eager to learn how I could be of service to this article and community.

In addition, I noticed that the city of Louisville is referenced as the largest city in Kentucky as of the 2005 population census. With the integration of the city of Lexington and the surrounding Fayette county, is this still the case? I was under the impression from several sources that Lexington (now the entirety of Fayette county) has exceeded the population of Louisville within recent years, due to Louisville not integrating with its own county. If I am incorrect I apologize for the error (I have not edited any pages, of course). Thank you for your time, and I look forward to meeting everyone. vendetta 19:19, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Lexington was larger than Louisville for a time before Louisville's merger with Jefferson County in 2003. Hope that helps. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 22:00, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Governor infoboxes

If anyone is interested, all of the governors of Kentucky now have infoboxes on their article pages. Acdixon 16:22, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Possibly useful map

I made a locator map for Kentucky. Similar ones are in use in infoboxes in state park articles (for example Itasca State Park) or city articles (for example Elmwood, Louisiana). I hope this is useful, Ruhrfisch 23:11, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

  • I found them to be more trouble than they are worth; they are almost never at the right place. I'd rather put a nice picture of the subject in its place.--Bedford 05:14, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Consolidating Resources

A good way to possibly increase the number of featured articles relating to Kentucky would be to restructure child projects (Louisville and Bluegrass Region) as work groups (or task forces or departments) rather than as separate projects. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history task forces for an example--that project creates a LOT of featured articles because it brings a lot of editors together. Having three different Kentucky projects scatters valuable human resources. The child projects will remain as important as ever, but people interested in Kentucky topics will have a central area from which to coordinate article improvement. Other work groups could then be developed -- Frontier Kentucky would be an interest of mine, for example.

Just an idea as I pass by. Cheers! —Kevin Myers 04:12, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm definitely for bringing these projects back in, especially Bluegrass Region and KYOVA region. I'm guessing Bluegrass region isn't very active, as they haven't noticed IP vandalism to their main page for a month today. (Just noticed and reverted it.) I feel like there will be some resistance from WikiProject Louisville, though. *expects Stevie to weigh in shortly* Acdixon 13:36, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
I should note that the Military History WikiProject absorbed several other projects -- and that's part of the reason why it's so successful. There's now a central area for announcements and discussion of general interest, and specialized task forces for specific interests. I think folks interested in military history probably have learned from their reading that success comes when efforts are coordinated. ;-) —Kevin Myers 13:53, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
I'll weigh in more later, but KYOVA region would not be acceptable to merge because it is composed of the Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia region, which is a densely populated area. Seicer (talk) (contribs) 16:50, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Remember that WPLouisville has a lot of Indiana covered within it, and like KYOVA needs to be separate, although with strong ties to WPKentucky.--Bedford 16:55, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Agreed with Bedford. WPLouisville is a metro area project. Strong ties with WPKentucky are very much encouraged, and I believe our projects have coordinated well over the past year. The main thing dragging down the development of articles, IMHO, is not enough active members. I myself am on break due to wikiburnout. Another factor is that WPLou took a long time assessing and assigning importance to articles (we just finished, thanks to Bedford!), and WPKentucky still has about 900 articles to assign importance to. With all the information gathered from this effort, it should be much easier as a coordinated team which articles we should pour most of our time into to move toward Featured and GA. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 18:28, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Regardless of how this discussion turns out, feel free to create the Frontier Kentucky workgroup. (You might look at Wilderness Road from our "Close to Good" list as a start. I think it's just a few inline citations from GA.) It think having some specialized workgroups might help balance the load a little better. I've been a one man Kentucky Governors workgroup for the last few weeks anyway. I know there has been in times past a lot of interest in Kentucky in the Civil War. That would make an excellent workgroup as well. Acdixon 20:28, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Another point I would like to make is that while I'm not taking a position on whether Bluegrass region or KYOVA region should be made into taskforces, it would be very worthwhile for these projects to go through the assessment process. It has been a very big eye-opener for WPLouisville to see the layout of where we should concentrate our resources. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 18:36, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Lyman T. Johnson

I created an article on Lyman T. Johnson for those of you who requested one. (WildManKY 18:51, 22 May 2007 (UTC))

Thanks! I've added this article to both WikiProject Louisville (lived there a long time) and WikiProject Kentucky (influential throughout the state). Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:05, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
And, as I am desperate to have anything I can add as a new Kentucky article, I added it to Portal:Kentucky.--Bedford 19:16, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Confederate government article

I just finished a fairly extensive article on the Confederate government of Kentucky. I would love for anyone who's interested to look it over, copyedit, comment, etc. I'm also looking for a free image of the Confederate state seal to add to the upper right of the article. If anyone knows where I can find one, please let me know, or add it yourself. Thanks. Acdixon 16:15, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't have much time to go over the article, but I definitely appreciate that it was created. Thanks! Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:39, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
I scanned in an image of the Confederate state seal, and am currently redrawing it, so that it will be my work, and I will be able to release it to the public domain. When I finish, I'll upload it and let you know, so you can make the edits you want. -- Steven Williamson (HiB2Bornot2B) - talk 20:00, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
UPDATE: I finished the image. You can locate it at Image:Ky_CSA_Seal.svg. I hope this helps your article. And feel free to ask me to do anything else that I might be able to do. I love working on WikiProject Kentucky! -- Steven Williamson (HiB2Bornot2B) - talk 20:25, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Alerts system for WP-KY

In this WPLouisville topic, I bring up developing an alerts system for use in emergency collaborations, instead of making changes to ordinary peer review mechanisms. Please let me know what you think. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 23:15, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

The WP-KY alerts system has been installed. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for updates. Cheers! Stevie is the man! TalkWork 00:14, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

New parameter to project template

I just added "needs-image=yes" as a parameter to {{WikiProject Kentucky}}, which can be used in place of {{reqphotoin|Kentucky}}. This will save vertical space on the talk page, and it will add the article to the same category. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:29, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Nice addition, as usual. Thanks! Acdixon 17:31, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome.  :) By the way, I also took out the text about membership, and instead added a "Become a Member" link to the div in the middle. This also significantly reduced the height of the template. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 17:45, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Use of infobox

I've started trying to clean up our home page a bit using an infobox I found for WikiProjects. My next thought was to split the Hall of Fame into its own subpage, with a prominent link on the home page (maybe in the "lead.") Thoughts? Acdixon 20:05, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

In WikiProject Louisville, I separated a lot of the content into various subpages I called departments and created a template to show all the departments. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:53, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
I noticed that, and was thinking of something similar eventually. Acdixon 20:58, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Trail Of Tears

Shouldn't the Trail of Tears article be part of the WikiProject Kentucky since it not only went through Kentucky, but there is a park in western Kentucky dedicated specifically to that? (Annie Catron 20:03, 6 June 2007 (UTC))

I'd certainly say that qualifies it. Acdixon 20:10, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Todo list discovery added to WP-KY banner

I just took the liberty to add todo list discovery to the WP-KY banner. This is the logic that determines what articles will be listed in the new Category:Kentucky articles with todo lists. I hope that tracking todo lists will be useful for the project. Please let me know if there are any concerns. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:21, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Sounds awesome. Thanks. Acdixon 16:48, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Louis Cox, man or myth?

Was Louis Cox the Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, as List of Governors of Kentucky claims? Or did he never occupy that office as Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky claims?

Inquiring minds want to know. Lamont A Cranston 00:24, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I was the one who added this name, based on information shown here but I haven't found any other references to this person holding the office. He is conspicuously absent from the list appearing in Kentucky Governors by Robert A. Powell (1976). This is also the case with a few other lieutenant governors in List of Governors of Kentucky. Far be it from me to take issue with the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives, but I can't find a secondary source that mentions Cox (and a few others.)
I had hoped to clarify the situation when I got around to expanding the articles for the related governors, but if someone could provide some clarification before then, I'd really appreciate it, since I'd like to get the list of governors in featured list condition at some point in the near future. Acdixon 13:41, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I found reference to Cox as a delegate to Democratic National Convention from Kentucky in 1952 and 1960 here but no mention of Lt. Governor. (Annie Catron 14:46, 15 June 2007 (UTC))

Other wiki

I just created a wiki at kywiki.org. Now comes the hard part: filling it out. I thought I would come to you guys and find out what kind of advice you'd have for me. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caleb (talkcontribs)

I'm not sure we need a seperate Wiki. I don't think that every single topic in existence needs its own Wiki. It's overkill. I can't seem to imagine someone thinking "I need to look something up about Kentucky". Oh, wait... I'll use the Kentucky Wiki. -- Steven Williamson (HiB2Bornot2B) - talk 15:34, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm inclined to agree. We don't even have enough active editors at this WikiProject. I would encourage everyone who is interested to contribute here for a while first. We only have 4 featured and 5 good articles. Acdixon 15:40, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I also agree. We need to make sure that Kentucky is well-represented in the biggest encyclopedia in world history, especially because of the cross-links between Kentucky and a lot of other subjects here. Duplicating that effort in something that far fewer people will see is not advisable. Far more people will learn about Kentucky if we keep it all here. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:09, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Opinion on Ad

Hi, I would like to know what the opinion of other persons on this project is about this ad. If would have been contacted earlier, I would have made an ad similar to this (below). I am not in a way disappointed at the artist efforts, but would have preferred that the banner would be in unison with the one below. Thanks.

Miranda 22:46, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
I agree. The lower banner definitely looks more prestigious. Acdixon 13:31, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I agree as well. For that matter, WikiProject Louisville could use one of these too. :) Stevie is the man! TalkWork 13:57, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
After comparison of the two, I agree also. It's hard to recognize the faults in your own work. I'm sorry, Miranda for giving you such a hard time. -- Steven Williamson (HiB2Bornot2B) - talk 15:32, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Meh, let's keep 53. Isn't WikiProject Louisville under the umbrella of WikiProject Kentucky? I think this satisfies the requirement for a banner quite well, because it encompasses the cities in the state of Kentucky. Miranda 04:15, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Films

In order to facilitate tagging films set or shot in Kentucky, I created two categories: Category:Films shot in Kentucky and Category:Films set in Kentucky. Using my limited knowledge, I included Goldfinger, Coal Miner's Daughter, Rainman, Fire Down Below, Next of Kin (1989 film), Seabiscuit, and Elizabethtown (film).

I'm pretty sure some of the scenes for Milk Money were shot in Northern Kentucky, but haven't been able to document it.

If anyone knows of any more movies about or shot in Kentucky, feel free to add either or both of those category tags to the article.

I also noticed that there are no articles for the films The Kentuckian so some enterprising editor might want to start that article (It's been years since I saw it.) SonPraises (talk) (contributions) 07:24, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

The Insider (film) was shot and set in Louisville. And Stripes (film) was shot in Kentucky (Louisville and Fort Knox). These are just off the top of my head. Thanks for creating these categories. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 15:10, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
I've also tagged Dreamer (2005 film) as set in Kentucky, but I don't know for sure if it was shot there or not. And I agree, these are good categories to have. Acdixon 15:17, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
In 1995 The movie "Last Dance" starring Sharon Stone, Randy Quaid, and Rob Morrow was filmed partially at the Penitentiary (Eddyville). I was there, but that info can be found here:[1] and probably several better sources. (Sampm 05:13, 24 June 2007 (UTC))
I tagged quite a few using http://www.actingbiz.com/extras_kentucky.php as a reference. I also tagged some that weren't on the list, but I don't have a comprehensive knowledge of which ones I tagged. I went on a tagging spree one day, figuring the more articles we get for WPKY, the better! And... by the way, Stripes is one of my favorites of the list of movies filmed in Kentucky. If you're curious as to what movies I've tagged, you can probably check out my contributions list (the official one, not the user subpage -- I don't consider tagging as editing). -- Steven Williamson (HiB2Bornot2B) - talk 02:50, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
How about the 1989 movie In Country starring Bruce Willis and Emily Lloyd? Most of the film was shot in Mayfield, Kentucky and Paducah, Kentucky. Thelatchkeykid 14:00, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Go ahead and add it. Acdixon 18:07, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Update and question It seems these categories have been deleted. Should we continue to include films shot in Kentucky and films set in Kentucky in this WikiProject? Acdixon 21:14, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Article review

I finished a significant rewrite of the Governor Charles S. Morehead article. It is currently tagged as a stub. I would greatly appreciate a peer review and a new rating.
--Spacini 14:57, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Feel free to re-assess the article yourself. If you have made it better than a stub, then decide whether it's now Start or 'B' quality. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:21, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I thought that might be a bit of conflict of interest.

--Spacini 17:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to inform everyone that User:HiB2Bornot2B (aka Steven Williamson) and I have decided to collaborate in creating the first featured topic for WikiProject Kentucky: Confederate government of Kentucky. The related topics will be the two governors of the Confederate government, George W. Johnson and Richard Hawes. I believe to pass FT, we'll have to get the main article to featured status and both governors' articles to at least good status. If anyone would like to help in this endeavor, please feel free to jump in. Even if you can just review the articles in their present states and leave suggestions for improvements on their talk pages, that would be great. There are only 15 featured topics on Wikipedia at present; I believe this would be a major coup for WPKY if we can pull it off. Acdixon 00:36, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

SUCCESS! Confederate government of Kentucky is Wikipedia's 20th featured topic! This is a first for WikiProject Kentucky. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 18:46, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

In case anyone is interested, List of Governors of Kentucky has been nominated for featured list status. Keep track of the nomination here. Acdixon 15:09, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Courthouse image project

I am trying to compile free images of all 120 Kentucky county courthouses, which as far as I know don't exist yet, at least not in one place. I have about... 1/6 so far, at User:W.marsh/KY Courthouse Project. Any contributions of course are very welcome, but I've checked the obvious places (Flickr, US Gov searches) so far. --W.marsh 21:02, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

What an awesome idea! I've added my home county's courthouse, and I'll try to get some of the surrounding counties. Acdixon 21:23, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Wonder if the images you can find here are public domain? http://courts.ky.gov/counties/ Acdixon 16:13, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately state government images aren't public domain... so these won't work. --W.marsh 17:32, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Joe Craft Center

I started a base article for the Joe Craft Center, the University of Kentucky's new basketball practice facility. It's very raw, and I was hoping somebody here could help expand it with better resources and possibly add a picture. Thanks! WildManKY 06:56, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello! Just wanted to mention the new article on the Phoenix Hotel, a historic site in Lexington. It is the first significant article that I've written, and so most likely could stand for improvement. I noticed that it had been redlinked from Cityscape of Lexington, Kentucky and decided to fill in the gap :) I tagged the article as within the scope of our project; if there are other things that need to be done, please let me know. *Vendetta* (whois talk edits) 18:18, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Featured article collaboration

User:WildManKY has recently split the article Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team out of Kentucky Wildcats. He and I have been discussing taking the former to good or featured status. We know this could turn into a beast, but it's a subject near and dear to many Kentuckians, so it could be the best chance for collaboration we've had in this project for a while. The cardinal rule for this collaboration will be cite everything with reliable sources. This is an article that could easily descend into a fansite. What say you, WikiProject Kentuckians? Are we up for this challenge? Acdixon (talk contribs count) 11:58, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

If we could put together a nice selection of pictures for this article, then it would be a nice addition to the article. If anybody has a picture of Ashley Judd doing the "Y", please upload it and post it under the proper section. Also, the picture of Rajon Rondo dunking over Ramel Bradley a few years ago at Big Blue Madness would be neat, too. Thanks! WildManKY 04:55, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Picture request for UK Football Players

Several UK football players have their own articles because they are likely to be drafted into the NFL after this season. If anybody could provide images of Andre Woodson, Keenan Burton, Jacob Tamme, Wesley Woodyard, or Rafael Little and upload them to the pages, it would be much appreciated. Citations and ISBNs

The article Lazarus W. Powell and a few dozen other pages[1] cite Kentucky Governors (1976) by using the "cite book" template and the parameter "isbn=B0006CPOVM". That is not an ISBN, but an ASIN from Amazon, and the resulting citation doesn't have any useful link. I couldn't find any ISBN, but the ASIN can be linked, as can an OCLC/Worldcat catalog record ID. The correct way to specify this in the cite book template would be "id={{ASIN|B0006CPOVM}}, {{OCLC|2690774}}" (which would become displayed as ASIN B0006CPOVM, OCLC 2690774). I could go through them and correct this, but perhaps something else needs to be checked as well? Is this a good book and edition to cite? How do you typically handle errors of this kind in this WikiProject? Do you maintain a list of standard literature, and would this book be on that list? After all, it's cited in more than a handful articles. --LA2 10:11, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

A fair amount of the material sourced from "Kentucky Governors" by Robert Powell is also available in sources such as "Kentucky's Governors" by Lowell Harrison. However, changing all the references would be a major exercise for little gain seeing as you have helpfully provided valid ASIN and OCLC numbers for the Powell book. To address the immediate problem of the invalid ISBN I have gone throughg and replaced them by hand. Thanks for pointing this out. Euryalus 13:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Great work! In the long runt, there might better techniques to maintain a standard literature list within a WikiProject. Some of my thoughts on this are found on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fact and Reference Check. --LA2 21:23, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
I like the concept, particularly for history-related WikiProjects such as this one where there are a limited number of reference works. I don't entirely understand the Ref:Jane's template but no doubt a bit more study will do it for me. Once I understand it I'll do a similar one for the common works here and see if there is any consensus for its use. Euryalus 22:17, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

The idea is that you compile a list of standard works, and specify a label for each, e.g. "KenGov76" for the one we had above. Then you create a template, perhaps called "Ref Kentucky", where you put this code:

{{#switch {{{1}}}
  | KenGov76 = {{cite book | ... }}
  | BlaBla99 = {{cite book | ... }}
 }}

After this, all you need to do is to use {{Ref Kentucky | KenGov76 }} instead of copying the entire citation around. If you often refer to pages or chapters in your books, you can use extra parameters to your template. There's nothing magic about this. The point is that after this, it becomes so much easier to cite works that belong in the WikiProject's official standard reference library (= the template). And the WikiProject can easily keep an eye on that list. --LA2 03:20, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

See template:Ref Stockholm for an example of how this can work. --LA2 10:08, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to chime in late, especially since this issue is my fault, but I was on vacation. I can't find an ISBN number for this book on its copyright page, or anywhere else for that matter. I feel that it is reliable, however, and I believe it is mentioned by Harrison in the foreword to his book. I also believe there is an updated edition of the book, but I don't have access to it (rural libraries being what they are.)

As for the larger issue of a common set of reference works, I like it. (That said, I've been looking at it for a total of less than five minutes.) I know it would help me, since I'm citing the same five works in every governor article I improve. Once I dig out from under the post-vacation pile, perhaps I can give this some more attention. Hope to get some help from other project members. Any takers?

BTW, thanks to Euryalus for cleaning this up in my absence! Acdixon (talk contribs count) 13:31, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

"Murder"  ?

Hsi article referrs to native American "murdering" people coming along the trail.

There are circumstances where this would be the appropriate word. No doubt some of these killings could be described as murder. For example, if the native Amjericans were part of one of the tribes that did make a sale of the land, then perhaps a killing they did could be described as murder.

Perhaps not, though. Could what is describe d as a sale really ahve been land fraud? Seems likely. Most of the deaths inflicted on the invaders weren't murder.

In any case, "murdered" is a biased word and "killing" is not.

Mick MichaelCYoung 03:36, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

HI. Which article are you referring to? Euryalus 03:46, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I haven't done this much and I thought it would be linked to the article I came from. "Wilderness trail" is the article.

I'm not sure if it is best to stress that the worder "murder" is biased there or just make the claim that it is either a language use error or a lie. Mick

MichaelCYoung 11:43, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this up. I've changed the wording to "killed" for the reasons outlined at Talk:Wilderness Road. Opposing views welcome - to keep any debate in one place let's discuss over there rather than here. Euryalus 02:10, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
