Boat racing is the racing of boats on water. The racing of boats powered by oars is recorded as having occurred in ancient Egypt, and it is likely that people have engaged in races involving watercraft for as long as such vehicles have existed.

Types

There are as many types of boat racing as there are boats.

• Canoe racing, competitive forms of canoeing and kayaking
• Drag boat racing, a form of drag racing which takes place on water rather than land
• Dragon boat racing, a type of human-powered watercraft racing
• Hydroplane racing, a sport involving racing hydroplanes on lakes and rivers
• Circuit boat racing, a race between up to 15 boats going for for a win.

• Kayak racing
• Kyōtei, parimutuel boat racing in Japan, referred to as "BOAT RACE"
• Match race, a race between two competitors, going head-to-head
• Offshore powerboat racing, racing by large, specially designed ocean-going powerboats

• Rowing (sport), a sport in which athletes race against each other on rivers, on lakes or on the ocean
