Dinton, Wiltshire

Dinton is a village in Wiltshire, England, on the B3089 road about 8 miles west of Salisbury. The population was 597 at the 2001 census.

Present day

The parish has local services including A Church of England parish church, two public houses, a shop with a post office, and a village hall. The River Nadder flows through the south of the village. There is a bus service to Salisbury that runs about four times a day. The London Waterloo to Exeter railway line passes through the south part of the village but Dinton railway station has been closed since 1966. A business park in the south west of the village provides some local employment. Until the early 1990s RAF Chilmark was another major source of employment, which had several sites around Dinton.

The village is the base of the Francis Frith Photographic Collection.

History

Dinton is the location of Philipps House, a National Trust property formerly known as Dinton House. It was completed in 1816, by Sir Jeffry Wyattville, paid for and owned by the Wyndham family. In 1916 it was bought by Bertram Philipps, who renamed the house after himself. In 1943 he granted it to the National Trust.

Dinton was the birthplace of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon.

For most of its history the nearby village of Teffont Magna was a chapelry of Dinton, until in 1934 it was combined with the village of Teffont Evias, to form a united Teffont.
