Eritrea (ERI) made its Olympic debut at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Four years later, four athletes from Eritrea were sent to the 2004 Games in Athens and Zersenay Tadese won the country's first ever medal when he was placed third in the men's 10000 meters.

Eritrea is looking to establish itself in the long distance running events, in which fellow African nations like Kenya and Ethiopia have enjoyed Olympic success.

As of 2010, Eritrea has not competed in any Winter Olympic Games.

The National Olympic Committee for Eritrea was formed in 1996. They were recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1999.[1]
