Incredibles 2 is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated superhero film, and is the direct sequel to the 2004 film The Incredibles. It is in production by Pixar Animation Studios, and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is being written and directed by Brad Bird, the writer and director of the first film, and features Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell and Samuel L. Jackson all reprising their roles.

The film is scheduled to be released on June 15, 2018, and will be given an IMAX release.[4][5]

Premise

The Parr family struggles to maintain normal lives while Helen Parr (Holly Hunter), also known as Elastigirl is out fighting crime. Meanwhile, Helen's husband Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson), also known as Mr. Incredible, remains at home watching their children Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner), and discovering Jack-Jack's secret powers. However, they, along with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) will have to battle a new villain, The Underminer (John Ratzenberger) with a sinister plot.[6][7]

Voice cast

  • Holly Hunter as Helen Parr / Elastigirl: The mother of the family who has the ability to stretch her body into many shapes and forms.[1]
  • Craig T. Nelson as Bob Parr / Mr. Incredible: The father of the family who possesses super strength and limited invulnerability.[2]
  • Sarah Vowell as Violet Parr: The family's daughter who can project force fields and turn invisible for a certain amount of time.[2]
  • Huck Milner as Dashiell "Dash" Robert Parr: The family's first son who possesses super human speed. Dash was previously voiced by Spencer Fox in the first film.[2]
  • Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best / Frozone: Bob's best friend, who has the ability to form ice from humidity.[3]
  • Brad Bird as Edna Mode: The fashion designer for the Supers, and also very close friend to the Parr family.[2]
  • John Ratzenberger as The Underminer: a new villain who appeared at the end of first movie, and wants to bring war and destruction on the world.
  • Bob Odenkirk[8]
  • Catherine Keener[8]

Production

Following The Incredibles, Brad Bird directed his next film for Pixar, Ratatouille, which was released in 2007. Near its premiere, Bird said he was open to an idea for a sequel to The Incredibles, but only if he could come up with an idea superior to the original film. He stated "I have pieces that I think are good, but I don't have them all together."[9]

During an interview in May 2013, Bird reiterated his interest in making a sequel: "I have been thinking about it. People think that I have not been, but I have. Because I love those characters and love that world." He added: "I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another Incredibles film, and if I can get 'em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that."[10]

The film was first confirmed at the Disney shareholders meeting in March 2014, with Disney CEO and chairman confirming Pixar was working on a sequel to The Incredibles, with Bird returning as writer.[11] Bird started writing the script around April 2015,[12] and shortly affirmed that the sequel to The Incredibles would be his next film after Tomorrowland.[13]

Bird said that the film will not reflect trends in the superhero genre since the first film's release, explaining, "I don't think that kind of idea stays interesting for very long. For me, the interesting thing was never the superhero part of it. It was more the family dynamic, and how do superhero things play into that."[14] He also wanted to include some unused ideas that "didn't fit" in the first film.[15][16] Bird said that the film will focus on Helen Parr, aka Elastigirl.[17]

While the return of Holly Hunter as Helen Parr and Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius were announced earlier,[1][3] several casting announcements were made during the July 2017 D23 Expo; Craig T. Nelson and Sarah Vowell were also confirmed and will be reprising their roles as Bob Parr and Violet Parr respectively, while the character Dash Parr being recast with a new child actor named Huck Milner. He will be replacing Spencer Fox from the previous film due to Fox having gone through puberty since the first film's release.[2]

John Ratzenberger will also return as the Underminer, with the story picking up immediately after the Underminer's appearance from the conclusion of the first film, and Bird will continue to voice Edna Mode.[17] Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener have also been signed into undisclosed roles.[18] Bird confirmed that Michael Giacchino will return to compose the score,[19] who started working on it around May 2017.[20]

Release

The film was originally scheduled for theatrical release on June 21, 2019, but the film was moved earlier to June 15, 2018, while its former 2019 release date was taken by Toy Story 4, which was lagging in production compared to this film.[21] On February 22, 2017, Incredibles 2 was announced to be given an IMAX 3D release as part of Disney's new distribution deal with IMAX.[5]

Marketing

A 53-second teaser trailer premiered on November 18, 2017, on College GameDay. The teaser became the most viewed trailer for an animated film in the first 24 hours with 113 million views and 7th overall.[22]
