Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (IIM Ranchi | IIM-R) is a public business school in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. The school was accorded the status of an "Institute of National Importance" by the Ministry of Human Resources (now Ministry of Education), Government of India, in 2017. The school was established in December 2009 under the 11th Five-Year Plan of the Government of India and is the 9th IIM established in the country.

The institute offers master's degree programmes in management (MBA, MBA-BA, MBA-HR), Doctorate in Business Administration and Management (PhD), Post-Doc Fellowship Programme, 5-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM BBA+MBA), and an Executive MBA Programmes.

The institute houses 3 centres of excellence namely Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre for Leadership, Policy and Governance (ABVCLPG), Birsa Munda Centre for Tribal Affairs (BMCTA) and Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness.

The Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is the traditional flagship two-year full-time residential MBA programme, admitted through the Common Admission Test (CAT).

In addition to its academic programmes, the institute is engaged in facilitating research, offering consulting services, conducting seminars & academic conferences and publishing journals.

History

IIM Ranchi was established on 15 December 2009 and began classes on 6 July 2010, under the 11th Five Year Plan. The plan endorsed by the National Development Council in December 2007, envisaged the establishment of six new IIMs including IIM Ranchi which was approved by the Union Cabinet on 27 August 2009. The institute was set up with extensive support from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jharkhand, working under the guidance of the Ministry of Education.

Prof. M.J. Xavier was the founding director of the institute. The institute has been set up to serve the increasing demand for quality managers in the corporate world, whilst striving for excellence and working towards its core value of inclusive growth for the greater good.

Motto

The motto बहुमुखविकासो गन्तव्य: is derived from Sanskrit (pronounced as bahumukhvikaso gantavya) which means "In pursuit of multifaceted and holistic development."

Main Campus

The campus is spread across 90.14 acres and is located in Pundag, Ranchi. On 29 July 2013, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Pallam Raju laid the foundation stone of IIM-Ranchi. The campus houses academic blocks, faculty offices, student and faculty accommodation, an auditorium, a library, sports facilities and food outlets.

Athenaeum

The IIM Ranchi library is known as “Athenaeum-The Learning Resource Centre”. The library supports the academic community by providing up-to-date resources on management and related areas through its hybrid collections.

Academics

Academic Programmes

IIM-R offers different academic programme and has admission processes and eligibility respectively. The institute offers a master's degree in management under two-year full-time residential programs (MBA, MBA-HRM, and MBA-BA). The institute also offers Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) fellowship programs and a part-time executive program (PGEXP). The institute also offers the five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM). The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 enacted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in December 2017 declared IIMs as Institutes of National Importance, thereby allowing IIMs to award degrees to their students instead of diplomas.

Admissions

Admission to post-graduate courses at IIM Ranchi is done based on merit in the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs.[1] For the five-year IPM (BBA+MBA) course, IIM-R accepts applications through IIM Indore's IPM AT as well as College Board's SAT. Students shortlisted on the basis of their test scores and Class 12 exams face a Personal Interview (PI) round.

Senate & Student Council

IIM Ranchi is a completely student-driven business school. All the student bodies are managed by the students and are governed by the Student Council and Senate. They are collectively responsible for spearheading student activities and acting as a liaison between the college administration and the students. Student Council for Student Affairs also consists of seven Committee representatives, who along with the Senate form the Student Council of IIM Ranchi.

AGON - The Annual Management Fest

With events in the various business fields of finance, marketing, consulting, human resources and communications, organized in the form of case studies, quizzes, essays, debates and more, AGON draws huge participation from local and national colleges.[3]

AAROHAN Leadership Speak Series

IIM Ranchi hosted its first leadership speak series named "Aarohan" on 8 January 2016 at Cockerel Stadium, Dipatoli cantonment, Ranchi. The idea of this is to invite role models across various fields to come and address the IIM Ranchi community, particularly the students. It is a leadership talk series aimed at student interaction with leaders and innovators of their respective fields to promote intellectual growth, stimulation and facilitate the development of a more inclusive world-view. Lt Gen Arun Kumar Sahni, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, ADC, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Command of Indian Army and Dr. Y.V.N. Krishna Murthy, Director, National Remote Sensing Centre, ISRO have been a part of the series[4]

Colloquium

Colloquium is an annual series of guest lectures, where students of IIM Ranchi get an opportunity to interact with the industry leaders in finance, marketing, operations and HR that happen throughout the year. The speakers also deliver insights along with discussions on various contemporary issues faced by India.Some of the renowned speakers are: Mr. Amar Abrol, MD and CEO, AirAsia India. Mr. Amit Vaish, Director and Head HR, Barclays India. Mr. Satish Shah, Head of Human Capital, De Shaw India. Mr. Anirudh Patil, Director of Strategy & Operations, McKinsey & Co. Mr. Shashank Saxena, Vice President of Technology, Morgan Stanley.[5]

HR Conclave

IIM Ranchi being the only IIM to offer specialised course in Human Resource Management, have organised two HR conclaves themed as "Turning the tide on unrest in workforce " in 2012 and "Holistic Development of Human Capital" in 2011, leaders across industry discussed the challenges faced by organizations and the role of HR managers in solving those challenges. Dignitaries like K.A. Narayan, President-HR, Raymond, Mr. Sandeep Choudhary, Partner, Aon Hewitt, Mr. Partha Dasgupta, CEO, Apogee Leads, Mr. R. Sridhar, Vice President-HR, ITC Limited any many others discussed about HR practices.[6]

RADIX- The Annual Business Conclave

Based on the themes "Connect," "Enthuse," and "Foster," Radix connects students with industry leaders. The aim is to facilitate a quality interaction among the experts and the students along with exchange of ideas regarding various industrial growth factors and the development of a shared vision for the future. Leaders from organizations such as KPMG, Ernst & Young, Lenovo, Godrej etc. have been a part of Radix 2017.[7]

RUSH- The Annual Sports and Cultural Fest

This two-day festival, the flagship of IIM Ranchi, includes events like Cricket, Lawn Tennis, Football, Athletics, Volleyball, Badminton (Men/Women), Table Tennis (Men/Women), Throwball, Theme Photography, Solo Dance, Duet Dance, War of Bands, T-shirt painting, Comedy Shayari etc.,[8]

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre for Leadership, Policy, and Governance (ABVCLPG)

The Atal Bihari Vajpayee center for leadership, policy, and governance (ABVCLPG) aims to conduct multidisciplinary research in leadership, policy, and governance. It envisions becoming a vibrant knowledge center that considers scholarly conversations in leadership, policy, and governance. It also aspires to establish itself as Think-Tank and provide professional consultation, advice, and support to government, public sector undertakings, and local administration in implementing their schemes and policies. It intends to develop a pool of leaders, administrators, and managers with the foundations of firm policy and governance strategies.

Birsa Munda Centre for Tribal Affairs (BMCTA)

The Birsa Munda Centre for Tribal Affairs (BMCTA) is named after the tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda, who contributed immensely to the country's independence with support from tribals. The centre aims to conduct intervention projects and research on tribal issues and opportunities and is committed to activities related to the development of Tribal people by providing training programs for skill development. The centre aims to strengthen through collaborative networks and partnerships with institutions, especially for undertaking research and conducting training related to income generation, and livelihood programs, supporting entrepreneurial activities, and evolving as a responsive center for tribal communities for any issue significantly impacting tribal communities.

Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness

Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the Science of Happiness promotes happiness at work and beyond for a better tomorrow for individuals and society. The center focuses on three broad objectives: Individual perspectives, Society & Communal Perspective & Process Orientation.
