List of missions

Race missions

These missions are the main feature of Running Man, which involves racing to complete a mission first or chasing each other to eliminate the other team in a landmark.

List of race missions
  • Bells Hide and Seek (방울 숨바꼭질) [Episode 7–25,76,84,85,104,115,169,171,172,208] - Bells Hide and Seek is a shortened version of the race mission. A "chasing" team wearing bells must catch the "mission" team by taking their name tags from their backs in an allotted time. The "mission" team will need to find hidden items in the landmark and not be caught by the "chasing" team before the allotted time ends.[2]
  • Find the Guests (게스트를 찾아라) [Episode 26-28,30-38,43,44,46,57,101] - An upgraded version of Bells Hide and Seek, the "mission" team consists of the guests of that episode, who need to complete a series of missions in the landmark. In episode 26, the Running Man members divide into three teams and need to search for and catch the unknown guests, while staying together as only one member per team is wearing a bell.[3] From episode 27 to 32, the members are in one team and everyone is wearing a bell. When the guests find a certain item (Running Ball or walkie-talkie), the two members whose names are on the item are eliminated from the race.[4] In episode 33, there was a special race across Seoul with two teams searching for the guest, who was to complete a series of missions.[5] From episode 33 to 36, two teams are created between the members and then they must search for the guest(s), who is/are to find certain items. In episode 38, a special Find the Guests was used where one member would disguise as a guest and eliminate all the members by wetting their name tag.[6] In episode 46, the guest needed to take the members name tags with the help of a spy, as the race took place at three locations of the same chain (Kyobo Book Stores).[7] In episode 57, the guests were hiding within the staff members and the members did not know of the mission. The guests were to be found within ten minutes.
    • Mung Ji-hyo's Choice (멍~지효의 선택) [Episode 35] - Before the actual race starts, Song Ji-hyo is a team leader and has the power to choose four members to be part of her team. Her water taxi stops at every stop with a member at it and she has the choice to either let them in or leave them. The members left will form their own team.[8]
    • Fan Signing Event (팬 싸인회) [Episode 37,106,165] - Before being allowed to start participating in the race, all the members are scattered in "remote" locations and must give out 30 autographs. They are only able to start finding the guest once all members have given their 30 autographs. In episode 165, the members were hidden inside a [9] This mission was played again in episode 106, allowing members to continue on to the next mission.
  • Catch the Running Man (런닝맨을 잡아라) [Episode 39-41] - The opposite of Find the Guests, the Running Men are to find (a series of) items as part of their mission. The guests are to catch the Running Man members by inking their name tags in episode 39 and taking their name tags in episode 40. The members need to complete their mission before being "out", and the guests need to "catch" the members before they complete their mission.[10] In episode 41, the guests were competing to capture more Running Man members, where those members would be a part of their team and help catch the remaining members. The Running Men's mission was to not be captured by the guests. If the members hid in the same location for a long period of time, their location would be broadcast and they would need to leave. The team with the most members will win.

Road races/Themed races

These missions are variants of the race missions, which involve travelling through a city and between destinations to complete missions. Later episodes moved away from the "race mission + other missions" format and entire episodes became a race with missions during the race. Some episodes would feature special themes that form the race.

The first mission is to find and answer a mobile phone in Jeongja Station in thirty seconds to receive the first hint. Teams who fail the mission do not receive the hint. The number of teams receiving the hint are also reduced each mission (4/3/2/1). Teams then travel to the next mission venue (Yuldong Park) and must bungee jump to reach the mobile phone for the second hint. The teams then travel to the next mission venue and have a meal. The members are then quizzed on questions relating to the meal or what the members ate. All members must answer correctly within thirty seconds. Finally, teams travel to the landmark (KT Building), with the first team arriving receiving the last hint. The final mission involves no teams and it is the spies versus the remaining members. The members must eliminate the spies. The spies must find each other, find the secret name tag, and bring it along with their name tags to the final venue.[39]
  • Queen Race (왕비 레이스) [Episode 71] - Three teams must perform missions to become earn the most Running Brass Coins. Teams travel to the first mission venue (Gwangjang Market), and must choose five areas and buy a speciality product from each area while carrying the queen. If her feet touches the ground, they must start over. The teams then travel to Itaewon, and must find a designated foreigner (later changed to any five foreigners) and swap the speciality product they have for something. Teams then travel to the next mission venue (Geobukseon Ferry), and the items they swapped are weighed. The weight in grams is then exchanged for Running Brass Coins (10g = 1 coin). The coins are then used to gamble and try to earn more by successfully playing games (x2: ping-pong using a daenggi; x4->x6: jegichagi ten times while carrying the queen; x3: drink a "special" mustard tomato juice, then say a tongue twister in relay within forty-five seconds; x5: wearing a eosahwa and eat the dried persimmon attached within thirty seconds). Teams then travel to the final mission venue (Gyeonghui Palace), with the first team arriving receiving twenty Running Brass Coins and second receiving ten coins, and must eliminate the other teams by taking their name tags, which are worth ten coins each, within ten minutes. At the end, the team with the most Running Brass Coins wins.[40]
  • Hong Kong 24 Hours (홍콩 24시) [Episode 72,73] - Three teams must perform missions to solve the Legend of Nine Dragons. Teams first travel to the first mission venue (Soho), the first part of the mission requires one member of the team rides one of the Central–Mid-levels escalators while one member is piggybacking the other member and give the escalator-riding member a Speed Quiz. They must answer three questions correctly before the escalator ride is over. The second part of this mission requires one member to run up to a bar while two members ride the Central–Mid-levels escalators there. The one member then rolls a die three times (later two) to determine what drinks are added to a "cocktail". The two members then must drink the cocktail and guess what drinks were used. When teams complete a mission, they have a choice of one of three Dragon Medals with a chain made in gold, silver and bronze. Depending on the choice of the medal, the team travels to the next mission venue (Tsim Sha Tsui ferry terminal; Victoria Park). The next mission is the former World Music mission, teams must listen to Hong Kong movie theme songs and sing it correctly. The teams then travel to the final mission venue, Langham Place, but then change venues to Langham Place Hotel due to overcrowding by fans. At the hotel, the teams must find the secret agent holding the Golden Ball among three hundred fake agents. Teams then travel to the fourth story of Langham Place to learn that only one of the nine medals is real and receive the mission for the next day in Korean for the first team, English for second, and Cantonese for the last team. The game is now played individually. The next morning, a "True" sign is hung on the door of the person with the real medal. The members then check-out and choose an envelope containing different locations. Each member performs different missions to earn the location of the final mission venue (Haha: Find a citizen and sing one verse of K-pop; Jae-suk: Take a picture of the hint in the panda pen; Kwang-su: Take a picture of the hint while riding on the roller coaster; Suk-jin: Find the voice of the correct bird; Jong-kook: Train the dolphin to shake hands, dance, and slide; Ji-hyo: Play rock-paper-scissors with a citizen up a set of stairs; Yong-hwa/Min-jung: Pick three "excellent luck" fortunes; Gary: Compete with Ko Dong-wan FD in giving a rose to a citizen). After completing the mission, the members travel to the final mission venue (Ngong Ping Village) by cable car and hints (Find the white-haired Mr. Chung) are placed on the ground along the route. At the village, the members must find the white-haired Mr. Chung to distinguish whether their medal is real or fake. Hints to the final venue (Wisdom Path) are hidden beneath the name tags and those who eliminate a member will receive their medal as well. The members must find the real medal, bring it to the final venue at the end of Wisdom Path, where a dragon holding the other half of the medal is, and place the medal in the slot to win.[41][42]
