Early life

Tripathi was born on 5 September 1976 in a Bhojpuri-speaking Hindu Brahmin family in Belsand village (Barauli block) in Gopalganj District in the Indian state of Bihar, to Pandit Benares Tiwari and Hemwanti Tiwari as the youngest of their four children.[6][7][8][9] His father works as a farmer and Hindu priest.[6] Tripathi also worked as a farmer with his father until he was in the 11th standard at school. During festive seasons, he used to play the role of a girl in his village's natak, which was appreciated by the villagers and ultimately prompted him to make a career out of acting.[10] He moved to Patna after high school where he studied in Institute of Hotel Management, Hajipur. He did theatre and was active in college politics.[11] Out of fear of failure in acting he also worked briefly at Maurya hotel [1] in Patna, where he encountered his idol Manoj Bajpai. Tripathi later narrated that once, while he was working as a chef at Maurya Hotel, he decided to keep Bajpai's slipper, which the latter forgot in his room, as a souvenir. After his stay of about seven years in Patna, he moved to Delhi to enroll in the National School of Drama, from where he graduated in 2004.[12][13]

Career

Graduated from the National School of Drama, Tripathi moved to Mumbai in 2004, Firstly he played the role of politics in the Tata Tea ad and subsequently performed an uncredited role in the film Run.[14][15] In his early career, he played mostly negative roles and became synonymous with gangster characters.[16][17] He appeared in many Hindi films in unnoticed roles including Apaharan (2005), Bunty aur Babli (2005), Omkara (2006), Shaurya (2008), Raavan (2010) Aakrosh (2010), Chillar Party (2011) and Agneepath (2012). In 2008, he also acted in the Bahubali TV series, and later in Powder on Sony TV as well as in few television serials such as Gulaal and Sarojini - Ek Nayi Pehal.

In 2012, he made his major breakthrough, when he was widely acclaimed for his role Sultan in Gangs of Wasseypur duology. His audition for the film went on for approximately eight hours.[18][19] Later, he played a variety of roles and won critical acclaim for the same.[20] Since then he has starred in several commercial films as well with critically acclaimed performances. His first film as a lead actor was the 2017 film Gurgaon and also gained appreciation in Kaagaz (2021).[21] His 2017 film Newton was India's official entry for the Academy Award in best foreign film category.[22] Tripathi made his debut in Tamil cinema with the film Kaala, which was released on 7 June 2018.[23]
