PBS distant feeds

What if a market lacks a PBS member? How can people in those markets view PBS programming? TitanTV has WNET and PBS-XD in its Dish list, but I don't see them in my EPG, so I'm guessing those are for areas without a PBS member. German TV

Should the red German TV wikilink really be DW-TV (Deutsche Welle), for which there is an article? --GilliamJF 00:52, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

No. German TV isn't (wasn't) the same thing as Deutsche Welle, although they carried some DW programming. Deutsche Welle is a German government operation, similar to PBS in the U.S., while German TV is a commercial joint venture of ARD, ZDF and Deutsche Welle. Effective 01 January 2006, German TV on DISH Network has been replaced by DW programming. --Quicksilver^{T @} 23:19, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Chart on subscriber count

Why does the number/year "2000" appear 3 different times (consecutively) with different numbers for each one? --Nguerrero03 08:28, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

The chart has no tie to reality whatsoever. Dish Network didn't even begin broadcasting until March 1996, it reached 1 million subscribers in December 1997, etc. The current chart is pure fantasy.

Major edit summary

I made some major edits this weekend:

1) Moved satellite fleet section to EchoStar Communications Corporation since both listings were different (and wrong) and EchoStar is the entity that operates the fleet.

2) Changed branding to DISH Network. That's how it's spelled, and if you disagree write here.

3) Added lots of verified and corrected tons of technological information and terminology (I own many of them).

4) Moved pictures of dishes around and added SuperDISH 121, and I welcome edits to move the pictures a bit but be CAREFUL they are anchored to each dish type heading.

5) I really think the channel listing should either be removed or put into a tiny table or other page that this page links to.

6) Fixed this broken discussion page.

Number 2. Is "DISH" an acronym for something? If so, what? If not, then WP:MOS-TM prefers "Dish". If you don't like that fact, then argue it on WP:MOS-TM first. Wikipedia (you, me, us) are not obligated to uphold a marketing style. I tracked down my own answer. DISH = DIgital Sky Highway (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/aboutus/satellites/echo1/index.shtml). Though I did run into unauthoritative people saying that it was originally Digital Information Sky Highway. --Charles Gaudette 18:29, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Court TV rift -- on CNN and other channels.

On CNN and other channels there's been an ad citing DISH Network's drop of Court TV. The ad claims if you're a customer and want the channels back "Take A Stand" and call +1-800-710-1922. If you call that number they play yet more propaganda, and then- tell you to press "1" to find out what you can do. Upon doing so, they offer contact information for the competitor DirecTV and "Your local cable provider." Does anyone happen to know who is paying for this ad aimed at thinning DISH Network's subscriber numbers until they bend on the policy? CaribDigita 21:05, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

MPEG4

I've read in some technical forums that DN has yet to broadcast in MPEG4, and instead marks the new HD channels as only compatible with MPEG4 IRDs, while still using MPEG2 for the actual compression, in order to force users to upgrade. The article contains very subjective opinions in the section where DISH is accused of overcharging residents of PR. To say that someone is overcharging for something is a subjective opinion and inappropriate for an encyclopaedic entry.

Mpeg4 Upgrade

The article has a section about a 'future' upgrade to all mpeg4 programing. I have an old mpeg2 only box, and today I received a letter from dish reading "Due to upgrades in our system's technology and services, it is necessary to upgrade one or more of your older model receivers at no charge to you so you can continue to receive your programming." This would seem to indicate that the mpeg4 upgrade will take place shortly. Sparrowkc (talk) 00:31, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I made minor edits to combine the problems and controversy sections to a general criticism and controversy section, as inspired by the earlier comment on this page by Asm2750. I made the date of controversy more prominent so that the reader has a better sense of present relevance. I added a header for each topic so that the reader doesn't have to read the whole text to have a sense of what it discussed. The enclosed content was not otherwise changed. Merging in Dish Network Corporation

I just finished merging in the content of Dish Network Corporation. Having a separate article made sense when Echostar was the parent company, given that it often pursued endeavors that were distinct from Dish Network. For an individual company offering primarily a single service, though, a single article makes the most sense. See, for example, Comcast or think back to Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio before the merger. exclusive CMT deal

The paragraph recently added discussing the deal for exclusive content from CMT at best needs a citation, and at worst doesn't add anything useful to the article and should be scrapped. Maybe the right answer is somewhere in between, but personally, I don't see the value in it. Broadcasters make exclusive content deals all the time. Anyone else have an opinion? A Carriage Dispute with NBC Universal over The Weather Channel

i just found out that Dish Network is in a carriage dispute with NBC Universal as the contract to carry The Weather Channel on Dish Channel 214 expire at Midnight on May 20, 2010, because of it, Dish is dropping The Weather Channel and replacing it with a new lower budget produced weather network known as The Weather Cast. Dish claims it's because the customers demanded a 24/7 weather work but The Weather Channel's website confirm it was due to a contract dispute.

According to this webpage it isn't Meridian, it's Englewood. Therefore, I'm taking the liberty of changing that entry.

The HDTV Signal

I removed the section called "The HDTV Signal" because it was totally idiotic (sorry, I was not logged in, so my edit does not bear my name, just an IP).

• "HDTV stands for high definition television." -- Oh, really? Rather make a link.
• "The HD signal has a greater resolution than the SD, or standard definition, signal, 1080i compared to 480i, which amounts to six times the resolution." -- Who cares? The article is about Dish, not about HD technology. Also, with HD Lite that Dish practices, horizontal resolution is either 1440 or 1280 pixels, so actuall difference is 4 or 4.5, not 6.
• "The shape of the HD signal when viewed on an HD television is also much wider than the SD signal, simiar to a movie theater image." -- This was written by a six year old. Keep it simple, stupid: HD has 16:9 frame aspect ratio. Nevertheless, this is not the place to discuss HD peculiarities, there is a separate article on that.
• "The High Definition transmission also has three components to its signal, not one, like an SD signal." -- This was written by a dropout student. Digital HD and SD use component encoding of color primaries, and no one cares what outputs you have on your Dish box.

The second paragraph is totally irrelevant, and its correctness is questionable. All it all, this was a pitiful chapter. Mikus (talk) 03:17, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Lots of people here on Wikipedia love Local on the 8's and WeatherSTARs, but I don't use Dish Network because here is my motto: no local, no good!" Dish is a evil satellite company. They lied. Dish, while currently offering "Free HD For Life" as well as "Local Stations" for customers, usually fails to reveal unless asked that local affiliates signals are not in HD, leaving subscribers frustrated as no timetable for ever adding network TV in HD through local affiliates is ever noted. Promotional Language and Lack of Citations ... and DisneyCSIfan

I've noticed multiple sections of what seems to be direct lifts from Dish Network marketing materials and have made a few edits to fix same. DISH reboot in Feb 2012

I understand removing the information about competition with DirecTV, and the AT&T "potential takeover", but I think it's nessasary to explain the reboot (new website, name, and logo) introduced at CES 2012. --DisneyCSIfan (talk) 21:29, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

It may be important, but I don't think it's critical enough to be in the opening section of the article. Did the company radically change their business model or start from scratch? Satellite Dish section restored

The Satellite Dish section has been restored. Most of this section was deleted by vandalism and never restored when the vandalism was removed. --KJRehberg (talk) 18:30, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Kick-in time for AutoHop

There's a discrepancy between Dish's press release boilerplate on AutoHop and the NYT account. The former says the feature is available at 1AM ET. The latter says two hours after prime time, presumably for all time zones. The latter makes more sense logically, but this might be one of those cases where the primary source is more accurate. I wouldn't think that someone in California would get to skip the commercials when prime time isn't even over. I have a source I'm going to look at tomorrow and see if I come up with anything. And by the way, I'm not sure the article as it currently appears really makes it clear that you have to decide to skip the commercials. Original research is generally frowned on, but given the discrepancy, it could be useful. Agree that this should be divided into two sections and like where you put it. This might work. I found an article (using other databases not available to the average editor) on the feature that hasn't been used as a source and an important claim is made: the commercials are there. The AutoHop section currently reads: " When enabled, the feature records but hides commercials, giving viewers the option of viewing prime time programming on the four major networks commercial-free." I pared the section back and remove the template. There's a sameness to many of these license disputes: blackout, followed by corporate name calling, followed by resolution with the terms undisclosed. This was discussed in a couple of threads back in 2006, it seems. The "official name", which I'll change in the Infobox, is "DISH Network Corporation". Whitewashing

SmartEdits is whitewashing this article as if he were a paid PR person. He has no sources to say DISH is a good place to work, and he repeatedly insists on removing the following section simply because he doesn't agree with it. Signals, bands, polarizations?

I've heard that Dish is Ku-band, but I'm having a hard time sourcing that (haven't dug too hard, admittedly), but frankly I'm a noob to satellite stuff so I'd love if someone better-versed in this could add such info to the page.

In particular, there seems to be all sorts of FSS and DBS stuff which appear to be separate services run by the same company. Maybe? I can't make heads or tails of it. A clear and cogent explanation of where (in the spectrum and in the sky) Dish programming can be found, would be helpful. Myself248 (talk) 18:32, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Channel removals

Removed claims that Music Choice and future programming packages will be added, as Dish Network has made no such announcements.

Incorrect product in infobox

Hello, here is another request to update the infobox. The |Products= parameter contains "Mobile phone", which is incorrect for the reason stated below. I propose these updates to the |Products=:

• Remove "Mobile phone"
  • Reason: The Sprint and T-Mobile prepay cellular services are not yet part of DISH Network's product line
• Add: Over-the-top media services
  • Reason: Dish Network is the parent company of Sling TV. The Sling TV Wikipedia article describes the service as "OTT Internet television" in the infobox.

Hello, here is a request to improve the first paragraph of the "Founding and early growth" section, which currently repeats a detail from the "History" section and misspells Jim DeFranco's name.

EchoStar, a precursor to DISH Network, was formed in 1980 by its chairman and chief executive officer, Charlie Ergen along with colleagues Candy Ergen and Jim Defranco, as a distributor of C-band satellite television systems. In 1987, EchoStar applied for a direct-broadcast satellite broadcast license with the Federal Communications Commission and was granted access to orbital slot 119° west longitude in 1992. References Proposed: DISH Network officially began operations on March 4, 1996, as a service of EchoStar. Dish México

Hello, Dish México was added back to the |Subsidiaries= parameter in the infobox. This is incorrect. Dish México is not a subsidiary of DISH. Rather, it's a joint venture with Echostar. DISH Network Corporation has nothing to do with Dish Mexico. While Echostar and DISH Network share a chairman in Charlie Ergen, they are not one in the same. Can editors remove Dish México from the infobox?

Removing the item would contravene that which is stated in the Dish Mexico Wikipedia article. The reference that I'm looking for is your statement that EchoStar and Dish Network Corporation are two different companies, and if they are, then which of the companies EchoStar did Dish Network originate from:

1. the one that owns 49% of Dish Mexico
2. the one that is claimed as the company which became Dish Network in the Dish Network article
3. Or some other third EchoStar we've not yet heard about.

User:Spintendo: Please allow me to clarify. In 2007, there was a split in EchoStar Communications Corporation. EchoStar Communications Corp. became DISH Network, which houses the pay-tv business to this day. Meanwhile, EchoStar Holding Corp was spun off from the original EchoStar Corporation. Now, when we say "EchoStar," we are referring to the EchoStar Holding Corp. Since the spin-off from EchoStar Communications Corp into EchoStar Holding Corp and DISH Network took place, EchoStar and DISH have been two separate companies. The post-split EchoStar has the investment in Dish México; DISH Network holds zero Dish México assets. This is shown on page F-63 of EchoStar Corporation's annual report. The annual report clearly shows that EchoStar is a separate company, has a different board of directors, and is traded under a different name (SAT) than DISH Network (DISH). The only thing these two companies share is a chairman in Charlie Ergen. Evidence to support this can not only be seen in each company's respective 10-K, but also in the following source from The Wall Street Journal. As for the Dish México Wikipedia article, the information on that page is inaccurate and should not be considered a viable source. It was my impression that Wikipedia articles are not used as sources for other Wikipedia articles. Can you reconsider removing Dish México from the |Subsidiaries= parameter in the infobox. Thanks! "The only thing these two companies share is a chairman in Charlie Ergen." It's not entirely clear from the source you've provided that the companies really are that separate. They may trade differently stockwise, but their joint venture leaves a lot left to share — satellite access, investment monies, and even a chairman. In any event, the issue as an edit request is moot. When I first deleted this entry, it was immediately replaced back in the article. Thus, the change is by definition controversial, meaning the use of the {{request edit}} template is not recommended without first having a wider discussion beyond what you and I can offer. Hearst Television

Hello again! I'd like editors to take a closer look at the Hearst Television section. At minimum, I would suggest removing , at midnight, ET and , at 7:00 p.m. ET as unnecessary details. I could see the dates being important, but not the exact times. However, I should note, the entire section is unsourced and there's a section specifically about Hearst Television over at the Criticism of Dish Network article. Are editors open to moving this content on the Dish Network page over to the Criticism of Dish Network page, or at least whichever details they feel are worth keeping? I should note, there is already text about the March and April 2017 actions on the criticism page, so this text is kind of redundant. Hello again! I've been suggesting some article improvements on behalf of DISH. I propose combining the Tailgater and Wally subsections and using the header "Tailgater and Wally". Currently, the Tailgater section mentions Wally, and the Wally section has just one unsourced sentence. There is no need for a separate subsection about Wally. I just now saw this. For clarity, correctly if I'm wrong? I try to create an article that leaves someone able to look at something with no previous knowledge and learn from there. I question if you feel your proposal promotes clarity in article. I mean isn't the Tailgater an antenna device used for watching Dish programming on the road while the "Wally" is the name for your receiver-box that sits inside the house??? @CaribDigita: Thanks for your feedback. I just noticed the "Tailgater" section mentions Wally, and then there was a one-sentence section about Wally right below. I was just suggesting a way to reduce redundancy – especially given that the Tailgater and Wally are most often used together -- and make the article a bit easier to read. If this gives a bit more clarity, an updated "Tailgater and Wally" section might actually read like the following:

"Tailgater is a portable satellite antenna that can be used on-the-go and can be purchased as a standalone device for $350. The Tailgater is supported by a Wally receiver, which is a solo-receiver without a built-in DVR. Customers only pay for the period of time when the receiver is active on the account. Monthly cost for or a Wally or older receiver is $7 per month. If the receiver is the only one on the account, there is no charge. The Tailgater weighs ten pounds, is protected from weather and automatically searches for a signal. The only satellites that are currently compatible with the Tailgater are at DISH's 119 (SD/HD TV), 110 (SD/HD TV) and 129 (SD/HD TV) orbital slots."

Typo

Hello again! Currently, the "Voom" section has a typo, in the fourth paragraph (starting with "According to Sanford C. Bernstein"). Can someone please change "cases involving spoilation" to "cases involving spoliation". You'll see "spoliation" used twice later in the section. Redundant "Criticisms and controversies" content

Hello again! I've been looking at this article and related articles, and realized a significant portion of the "Criticism and controversies" content is redundant to text at Criticism of Dish Network. For example, you'll see repeated info at Dish_Network#AutoHop and Criticism_of_Dish_Network#AutoHop, Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Criticism_of_Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations, etc.

Previously, I've been asked to reach out to the editor who added content to discuss possible changes, but in this case I cannot do so. I dug around in the article history and discovered that much of the existing content was added by User:Lesbianadvocate, an editor who "has been blocked indefinitely because CheckUser evidence confirms that the operator has abusively used multiple accounts", between December 2015 and March 2016.

I realize this is a big ask, especially coming from an editor with a conflict of interest, but might someone be willing to help trim down some of this redundant information? @CK-DISH: I agree with Kvng, but your request would likely be actioned faster if you have a draft of the proposed improvement. Generally speaking, this page should contain a WP:SUMMARY of the most significant controversies as listed at Criticism of Dish Network, so there is supposed to be some redundancy. As you mention, performing a rewrite is a major request for volunteer time. If you have a draft it would lower the amount of uncompensated work editors would need to do, improving the chances that someone will act on it. — Wug·a·po·des​ 22:23, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Telemarketing violations and fees

@Kvng and Wugapodes: Hello again to you both. I'm open to working on the Criticisms article's introduction, but I also understand Kvng's comment about having a company representative drafting new text. I was hoping an editor would be willing to take on trimming redundancies, but since this is such a big ask, perhaps I can identify specific problems for easier review? I'd like to start with Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Dish_Network#Hidden_fees.

These two sections are redundant to Criticism_of_Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Criticism_of_Dish_Network#Fee_disclosures. The telemarketing violations sections are the exact same, except the DISH company article has the additional sentence, "In 2017 DISH Network was fined $280 million by the FTC for Do Not Call Registry violations." If editors believe this sentence should be kept, can this be moved over to the Criticisms page, and the rest of the section here can be removed? Similarly, the fees sections are almost identical, except the company article has the additional sentence, "As of June 6, 2017, the shipping cost is now $12."

To clarify, I propose removing the Dish_Network#Telemarketing_violations and Dish_Network#Hidden_fees sections of this article because they are nearly identical to the content at the Criticism page, and I will let editors decide if the Do Not Call Registry sentence is worth keeping/moving.

Number of employees

Thanks again for your help, Spintendo. On page 31 of the same document, I see the text "We had approximately 16,000 employees at December 31, 2019, most of whom were located in the United States." Are you able to update the source and change (2018) to (2019) in the infobox's employee field?

Also, in the Dish_Network#Broadcast_technology section, the last paragraph seems unnecessary and the text is unsourced. Do you mind removing, "Both a standard receiver and a DVR (digital video recorder) are available to subscribers for an upgrade fee. Beginning in January 2010, DISH Network charges $7.00 as a DVR service fee, which covers cost of licensing EPG (electronic program guide) listings from Rovi Corporation, with the TV Guide logo displayed on listings screens to signify the partnership."? Inappropriate use of "ethnic programming"

Hello again! I'd like to propose another addition to this article. Currently, the page describes controversies and criticisms, but does not acknowledge any of the company's corporate citizenship initiatives. DISH has partnered with multiple organizations, completed numerous community projects, and assisted with disaster relief efforts. I've drafted a brief and neutral overview of this work based on journalistic coverage for consideration:

• Prior to the creation of the company's citizenship program, DISH assisted relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina (2005) by providing satellite television series in five U.S. states. DISH Cares was launched in 2014 and focuses on community engagement, sustainability, and providing services following disasters. In 2016, DISH partnered with American Forests to plant trees for subscribers selecting paperless billing during Earth Month (April). The program has partnered with Information Technology Disaster Resource to staff mobile command centers during relief efforts; the partnership donated approximately 245,000 hours of services to relief efforts between 2015 and mid 2017. In 2017, the company mobilized in Rockport, Texas after Hurricane Harvey, Florida after Hurricane Irma, and Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria (2017). The program has also facilitated supply drives for local schools. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the DISH manufacturing team in El Paso, Texas assembled medical-grade face shields to help protect frontline healthcare workers at the University Medical Center of El Paso.

I'd like to submit another request on behalf of DISH. Currently the "higher capacity satellite dishes" section has some unsourced and unnecessarily detailed information about web support forums and supposed customer comments. I propose removing the following text, which is the second half of the first paragraph:

• "The DISH 1000.2 is 23 in (580 mm) in diameter. Even with the larger size, there are still many reports of customers consistently losing signal on the 129°W orbital location. This has forced some customers to either use a 2nd separate DISH Network brand dish, or an aftermarket 30" dish, aimed specifically at the 129°W orbital location. On several satellite related web support forums, customers have critically suggested that the new DISH 1000.2 wasn't nearly large enough and should have been 20–30% larger to properly deal with rain fade. Later DISH Network took the approach of splitting the US into two regions. Subscribers west of Chicago use DISH 1000.2 antennas aimed at the 110°W, 119°W, and 129°W orbital locations (referred to as the western arc). Subscribers east of Chicago use DISH 1000.4 antennas aimed at the 61.5°W, 72°W and 77°W orbital locations (referred to as the eastern arc)."

Currently the "Technical information" section has some unsourced and unnecessarily detailed information. I propose removing the following text:

• "High-definition television (HDTV)": "In January 1999, the company released the industry's first high-definition television (HDTV) tuner. In August 2003, the company launched EchoStar IX, the first satellite equipped with commercial Ka band payload for broadband service over the United States. This led the company in 2004 to be the first satellite TV service to offer local channels to all 50 states. Unorganized

Much of the data is not organized very well. For instance, I see where the article talks about hoppers and Joey’s, then says that HBO is not available (Which as of last month, it’s been back) and then jumps back to Sling…. It just is odd to me Gumby-andrit (talk) 02:49, 2 September 2021 (UTC)

Incorrect subsidiaries

Hello, here is another request to update the infobox. The |Subsidiaries= parameter contains several inaccuracies. I propose these updates to the |Subsidiaries=:

• Remove Dish México
  • Reason: Dish México is not a subsidiary of DISH. Rather, it's a joint venture with Echostar. DISH Network Corporation has nothing to do with Dish Mexico. Here's an article from 2018 that explains in more detail: [2]. While Echostar and DISH Network share a chairman in Charlie Ergen, they are not one in the same.
• Remove: Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Open Mobile
  • Reason: The T-Mobile/Sprint merger is not complete, so the divestiture of Boost to DISH is not yet finalized; therefore, Boost, Virgin Mobile and Open Mobile are not currently part of DISH.

As an employee of DISH, I am here to suggest improvements and updates to this article. I'll avoid editing the article directly and will disclose my conflict of interest openly when submitting requests for editors to review.

Proposal to Add New External Link

Hi,

I would like to add an external link to this Wiki article. Similar to an existing external link at the bottom of the article (to access a Dish Network channel lineup via tvchannellists.com), the proposed one leads to a more up-to-date/complete version of the guide that is printer-friendly and color coded by TV station genre. This guide is free for users to download from the website. The intent is to help folks see a more organized national Dish channel lineup in hardcopy.

Personally, since the channel list requires a form of "registration" in order to receive it (a user has to provide a physical address and email address to receive it, similar to an online ordering system), I would discourage its inclusion per WP:ELREG. I think the real value for your site was being able to print it. Now I'm not sure what would be best for readers. Yes, the advantage of my list is it's printer-friendly whereas the other one is not.
