Stingy owners[edit]

I think if you were to look at the early days, you would find that most of the owners were stingy, especially the ones for whom baseball was their only income. I also suspect that the Black Sox, despite being victims of Commy's penny-pinching, were probably making pretty good money for their day. The stars, like Cobb and Wagner, held out for big salaries and knew they could get away with it, because the owners needed them in order to bring in revenue - but that also hurt their chances to win, with too much money being spent on just one player. The Yankees upset the apple cart, because they were owned by rich guys who simply wanted to win, and were both able and willing (up to a point) to spend, and that put the penny-pinchers largely out of business in terms of pennants. The Connie Macks might win occasionally, but year in and year out it was the big-spending Yankees. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 16:45, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Paradoxically, the Yankees being winners all the time also brought people into the ballparks when they were in town. In terms of pure business, as opposed to actually winning, maybe the other AL owners liked it just fine. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 16:47, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • True. I wasn't responsible for adding the phrase "a particularly stingy owner", AFAIK... just the link. I was just linking to the person that the Black Sox were historically known to have disliked. — Dale Arnett (talk) 16:49, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks to the Black Sox, Commy has become the poster child for "stingy owner". The Yankees, in fact, were also stingy, it's just that their stinginess bar was higher. That all changed in the 1970s of course, and hence everything changed, and the Yankees never won again. Oh, wait... Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 16:52, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2009 Bball All-American article[edit]

Dale - Not a big deal, but the players were in alpha order, which is how they are listed on every other year AA page (or should be). Just wanted to make sure you knew there was some method to the madness - we don't have voting info very far back & I was trying to keep consistency (I've been going back and filling in AA teams for months). I wasn't sure what the don't use new section was asking me not to do ... but I'll do it this way. I just wanted to mention that I'm trying to improve the NASCAR article a bit, and I noticed that you contributed a lot to the article. So if it's not already on your watchlist - you may want to put it back on for a little bit, so you can check my edits, and add any improvements to anything I'm doing. I recently purchased a book (several actually) to reference the article - so I think I can make some improvements. I've worked with Royalbroil on some NASCAR stuff, and I'd welcome the chance to work with another NASCAR fan. ;) — Ched :  ?  19:35, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am contacting you, since you are listed as an admin participant in the college basketball project. User:Chicago54 has repeatedly (four five times) removed reliable, sourced information from the article Todd Bozeman, despite being warned twice three times. It is a single-purpose account with only these removals in his edit history. The information is not flattering to Bozeman, but, to the best of my knowledge it is factual, accurate, and most importantly, sourced, so I believe it is within BLP guidelines. I just wanted to let you know. I did not revert the latest removal, so I leave it to you to act as you see fit. Thanks. Strikehold (talk) 05:31, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization of player positions[edit]

The basketball player positions need to be changed on the pages. Like Small forward...this page needs to be re-named Small Forward. That is because some idiot keeps changing all of the links anywhere on wiki to Small forward. Like an example, "he plays at the position of small forward" in a sentence within the article. This idiot changes it to "he plays at the position of Small forward", just because the page is called that. The problem is on the entire wiki this guy changed it. Now every basketball article with the positions has a grammatical ERROR on it.

Therefore, the positions need to be made capital, just like they are actually on most basketball sites. Then this sentence would be grammatically correct, "he plays at the Small Forward position", because Small Forward would be a proper name, whereas Small forward is NOT. This needs to be done for all the basketball positions because apparently the average user is too stupid to figure out basic English. Once the wiki pages are changed from Point guard to Point Guard, etc. this problem will end. Also, in the first place Point guard is improper English, it should either be point guard or Point Guard and the same for the rest of the positions. Since changing it to point guard won't fix the problem of a proper name as a title, then it needs to be changed to Point Guard, etc. for each position. This is getting to be a big problem on the basketball articles.

--Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 17:39, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Although the abbreviations are pretty much always capitalized, most US sites I've seen—both basketball-specific, and general sports media like ESPN and SI—don't capitalize the positions at all when the words are spelled out, except the first word of a sentence. Personally, I think the page titles should stay as is, and position names should never be capitalized except for the first word of a sentence. — Dale Arnett (talk) 00:46, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NBA/NHL playoff games format[edit]

Hi Dale

I changed all entries from the start of the month to the following format:

Before:

After:

I think it's important to note in playoff series which team is playing at home, also after the games are concluded. This is something that the American habit of naming the winner first is lacking vs. the international habit of listing the home team first...

As far as I know, the word "in" should be used before the name of the city, as in this case. Even though the link leads to the name of the venue, it's what the reader see that counts.

what do you think?--Nitsansh (talk) 10:54, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The FIBA rules changes[edit]

ULEB competitions and all ULEB umbrella national domestic leagues change the FIBA rules beginning with the 2009-10 season. All teams that play in FIBA EuroChallenge are also under the ULEB umbrella. This has already been announced by ULEB prior to the 2007-08 season. Since that announcement there has been no further announcement changing it to the 2012-13 season. So as things stand now it will change starting next season. Thanks, Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 19:48, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Monarchos[edit]

You have twice edited the Monarchos page to claim that he had the third fastest Derby time behind Sham. We do not know that, because the 1973 Derby was timed to the fifth of a second and thus could be anything from 1:59.40 to 1:59.59. We don't have a time at all for Sham, but 2 1/2 lengths is approximately .50 seconds, meaning Sham's time could be anywhere from 1:59.90 to 2:00.09. Unless you have a documented source of an electronic time of the 1973 Derby to hundredths of a second that includes the second place time (which I believe does not exist), there is no basis to conclude that Sham necessarily ran faster than Monarchos. 66.92.37.74 (talk) 00:44, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of expressions related to death[edit]

A few points I want to make:

  • You talk page takes too long to load.
  • Every phrase in the List of expressions must be cited with a reliable source.
  • Try to link euphemistic slang to 'euphemism' and 'slang' accordingly.
  • If it is used in the UK, state it in the remarks.

If you object to any of these points, feel free to tell me. If you don't, please correct the mistakes so that the page looks better, although I have already corrected some of it :). PGA Tour/WGC[edit]

I see the note you recently added to the PGA Tour article. I don't dispute the information (obviously), but I question whether the WGCs are prominent enough to include in the lead paragraphs. What do you think? If you agree with me, is there a good place to move it? My feeling is that the only organizations that need to be mentioned in contrast to the PGA Tour are the PGA of America, USGA, and LPGA; they have names and/or missions that are sufficiently similar to the PGA Tour that some explanation seems called for, and even fairly casual fans of the sport will have heard of them and are likely to be coming to our article looking for some explanation. On the other hand, I think that it takes a more "die-hard" fan of the sport to know of the WGCs and where they fit into the golf constellation. MrArticleOne (talk) 03:02, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MLB tiebreaks between league champions[edit]

Hi Dale. What determines the playoff seeding if 2 division champions are tied? I understand that the Dodgers have the edge in a tie with the Phillies, and the Phils have the edge over the Cards, so the birds are now locked at #3. What about the tiebreak between the Phils and the Rockies? Also, if the Tigers and Twins should have a playoff game to determine the champion, who will be the host?--Nitsansh (talk) 21:16, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Head-to-head records determine the tiebreakers in all cases, including one-game playoffs starting this season. According to MLB.com, here's the situation:
    • In the AL Central, the one-game playoff will be at the Metrodome because the Twins are 11–7 against the Tigers.
    • The Dodgers win a tiebreak against the Phillies with a 4–3 head-to-head record.
    • The Phillies win a tiebreak against the Cardinals with a 4–1 head-to-head record.
    • The Phillies win a tiebreak against the Rockies with a 4–2 head-to-head record.

Sports books[edit]

Hi, Thanks for lacrosse.

I realize that you're an old contributor to that page. That page is a twin of the War Books page. I went all completist on War Books starting back in March, and then I applied the same method to Sports Books. I tripled or quadrupled its size one weekend a few months back.

What do you think of it now?

Some sports are never going to warrant a full-blown film of their own, so I've tried to make the list inclusive rather than exclusive. So if your favourite sport is tiddlywinks, then at least you've got a book that apparently includes a tiddlywinks scene, and that's going to be a rarity which you might very well be unaware of.

One frustration has been cricket. Lots of films, not a lot of acknowledged source material.

Even though I may be a dumb American, I think I can safely say the Irish Rugby Football Union would not be interested in that. They've used their flag for decades. Also, WP policy is to use only free images whenever possible, and only use nonfree images when fair use in U.S. copyright law would allow it. The use of national flags throughout articles dealing with rugby union competitions would almost certainly violate fair use. — Dale Arnett (talk) 02:07, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bowl games announcement[edit]

Hi Dale

What time the matchups should be announced?

BTW... I see that Virginia Tech is due to play one of the non-BCS bowls... according to my calculation, that means Boise State should defenitely get a BCS bowl game, since without VT, only the SEC (Florida) and Big 10 (Iowa or Penn State) are eligible for 2 teams, and there are 3 berths available for non-automatic entries.--Nitsansh (talk) 23:49, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Miami may just sneak into the top-14 and be BCS-bowl eligible as well, but it would be ridiculous to select a #14 9-3 team over an unbeaten #6...--Nitsansh (talk) 00:12, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Law and Order franchise[edit]

I have reverted your edits that included UK characters in the Law & Order Franchise article. I wanted you to know this was done with absolutely no malice, and your edits are generally very good. But in this case, the article is primarily about the US version, with only mentions of versions in other countries. May I politely suggest you begin an article about the UK version of Law and Order for the information you have? I am simply afraid if the info on the UK version is allowed to remain, we will soon have every other country with a version of show adding their characters to it - and it will become absolute chaos.
