ANI comments

I removed my reply to you, but I think you should know that you are gravely mistaken about basic policy and you should read them before commenting about them. WP:LOCALCONSENSUS is not allowed. The VPP and community agreed that MOSAM, as a manual of style, cannot overrule N/GNG based on some local consensus. Even the MOSAM itself was never official. Whether or not you are new, please familiarize yourself with the policy you are replying to, your error is half the problem why the issue is so bad. You may mean well, but you push your error and you act like I am wrong when the policy and the community says otherwise in multiple venues at multiple times. I don't want to sound mean, and I removed my retort from ANI for a more personal response here - I rather not embarrass you or keep that ANI going. I hope you read the policy and understand where my argument comes from and think better of me as a result - because I am not "puffing my credentials" by correcting RSes (with evidence) and fixing long-standing errors on Wikipedia with proper sources for content conflicts. Chelsea Manning Move

Hi! I noticed you added an IP address vote. I can't see this as being anything other than perfectly well-intentioned. However, if other people start doing it, there won't be any way to verify the comments when they start coming in from all sides and both sides. Maybe we can talk about what to do about IP contributors on the talk page, but putting it in this way might lead to unintended funny business and drama. __Elaqueate (talk) 19:47, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

There was a request on the talk page. We could screen them there before adding them to make sure they are appropriate. 88 put a template without consensus and I added it by mistake. I guess we can start a discussion at Talk:Bradley Manning#!vote request and get consensus for it as StAnselm has said. Konveyor Belt express your horror at my edits 19:51, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Sig

Hey, Konveyor Belt, I noticed your post to the questions page before you removed it. I'm glad your sig is working again, but just FYI: the HTML tag you're using (<font>) has actually been deprecated and isn't supported by the latest version of HTML. It's not that big a deal, really, but if you want, you could change it: all you should need to do is change the <font>...</font> to <span> ...</span> tags. Everything else should stay the same (including the style="..." bit), and it shouldn't affect the appearance, either. Cheers! Writ Keeper  23:55, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Writ Keeper, I reformatted the code like

<span style="text-shadow:#003399 0em 0em 1em,#003399 0em 0em 1em">[[User:Konveyor Belt|'''<span style=color:#00008B>Konveyor</span>''']]</span>[[User talk:Konveyor Belt|'''<span style=color:#B7410E>Belt</span>''']]</span> , but it still shows as wrong. Where did I make a mistake? (the sig I'm using right now is temporary, to be replaced by that monster of HTML code above once I can fix it). KonveyorBelt 01:47, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, if that is character-for-character what you're doing, then it looks like you're missing a few doublequotes and some other characters. Gimme a sec. Writ Keeper  01:51, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Is this what you're going for?

Brian Manning

I'm not going to continue trying to balance this part of the article for now, but it is not neutral as it stands. Chelsea Manning's father is the only viewpoint listed about the happiness of her childhood, when his is the fringe view according to our sources, and it is a view that only seems designed to put him in a favorable light. I don't know what is the best way to balance it, if it stays at all. __Elaqueate (talk) 18:15, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

If it can't be fixed, then we should remove it. KonveyorBelt 18:18, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
I tried to leave the sentiment, but added sourced dissent to the father's assertion. Then I tried to remove the statement while we found consensus on the talk page on how to word it. But I don't want to back-and-forth forever either. I just don't think her father is unbiased or representative here, and it would be better if it wasn't as it is now. __Elaqueate (talk) 18:35, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

The issue has been discussed "to death" because it's a clear issues, because reasonable people think it's absurd. It's unacceptable that one or two users police Wikipedia imposing their illogical conventions on pages. Lenore (talk) 00:10, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

@Lenore: Consensus has been determined at least 3 times by ArbCom and by a RM. If you think you can just go vigilante and defy various users and/or admins, good for you. It'll only end in sorrow.KonveyorBelt 01:32, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Don't cry COI

This essay gave me a good chuckle, since a lot of editors harass me in my volunteer editing under the assumption that I have a non-disclosed COI. Boomerangs are pretty consistent.

Some of the text about expertise is a little confusing. I rarely have any expertise where I have a COI and most marketers don't. I would say something like "access to experts" - the important qualifier being that those experts are POV pushers, as oppose to regular experts.

The "PR firms" header I think is actually referring to astroturfing companies? Most PR firms have a hands-off policy when it comes to Wikipedia, but you may mean companies organized specifically to help companies undermine Wikipedia, as oppose to general marketing organizations. CorporateM (Talk) 07:02, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

By PR firms I mean like Wiki-PR who are not here to build an encyclopedia and actively undermine it. KonveyorBelt 07:07, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Yah, I would use a more specific term like astroturfing businesses. Astroturfing is a tactic sometimes deployed by PR to create the appearance of a crowd-sourced or grass-roots message that actually has a non-disclosed corporate sponsor (ie, non-disclosed COI editing under the guise of being a volunteer). Just my quick two-cents, but I mostly wanted to let you know it gave me a sort of pleased grin. CorporateM (Talk) 07:20, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

ANI archive

Hey, can you do that archiving trick again? If you just archive the first three threads you'll cut the page size in half. Thanks so much, Drmies (talk) 03:48, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Excellent--thanks. And I'm working on the next thread. Drmies (talk) 04:05, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Not excellent: tradition is threads should be stale for 36 hours before archiving; the ink wasn't dry on the first one. Please be more judicious in the future. NE Ent 04:08, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
If you're talking about the MilesMoney thread, that was closed 2 days ago. I see no reason why discussion should resume. KonveyorBelt 04:12, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
No, he means the "My account has been blocked" thread[2]. That one should probably have been hatted, not archived at the request of one editor. Please let the bots do their job, or (when they are inactive) take care only to archive truly stale discussions, not active ones. CluebotIII was active anyway, so there was no need for manual intervention here. Fram (talk) 08:32, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I only did that one because Drmies asked me. Cluebot is rather unreliable these days. KonveyorBelt 17:26, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
