LOL

Must admit when I saw this in my watchlist:

  • Chief Scientist: lecture tonight on Mars?

my first thought is "I'm not sure how anyone would get to it." Orderinchaos 23:57, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Suspected sockpuppet

190.246.82.69 (talk · contribs) Michellecrisp (talk) 02:04, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

If I could butt in, I think the best approach to take here is not to go through the process of RFCU and blocking as a sockpuppet but simply to mark the comment at AfD as made by an single purpose IP user with few other edits. Trust the closing administrator to give the IP editor's opinion the appropriate weight it deserves. Just my 2c -- Mattinbgn\talk 02:09, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I might just quickly add that I have checked location etc of this IP and the confirmed socks - and in my view this is definitely another sock attempting to evade the ban.--VS talk 06:51, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Riverina Environmental Education Centre

Well I got a photo of the centre today during my lunch break (Image:Riverina Enviro Ed Centre.jpg Image:Riverina Enviro Ed Centre 01.jpg). Now just got to do the section/article. Bidgee (talk) 07:28, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

article importance

I'll admit my importance ratings are a bit dodgy - feel free to change them. I just dislike seeing unrated articles. The citipoint one was already rated as high, so I was lowering it - in hindsight it really should be low, given the article doesn't really say why it should be higher. DYK for Mulga Bill's Bicycle

Updated DYK query On 5 October, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Mulga Bill's Bicycle, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

More 'Joe' stuff

Hi, sorry to be a bother, but I was wondering if I could solicit your opinion on a discussion (that pertains to Joe the Plumber) on the main Presidential Debate article? here Dp76764 (talk) 04:21, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

  • Dang! Beat me to it! Thanks =) Dp76764 (talk) 04:21, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
  • Thank you again for your time and (informative) input. This will be an interesting article to see how it turns out (I find the policy/procedural workings of Wikipedia to be quite interesting and am always looking to learn more about them). Cheers, Dp76764 (talk) 04:46, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Australia Wikia

Remember http://australia.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:AYArktos ? Now that the latest Wikia skin upgrade shows Top Users, that user is showing in the top seven. Says more about the wiki than about the user. I noticed that name on one of my weekly visits tonight because I saw the name just last night while looking at NSW Geography here.

Anyone who wants a few hours off from the serious business of improving the world's major encyclopaedia is welcome to tinker on the Australia Wikia, where questions of notability have not yet arisen and possibly never will, and where POV is definitely tolerated up to a point. Sydneysider Angela Beesley keeps an eye on it, of course (as a part-owner and temporary Ocker), but she has far too many other claims on her time at present!

Kind regards from across the Ditch! Robin Patterson (talk) 14:23, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Request for arbitration on tax issues

I have requested arbitration on tax issues here:

Just a note, primary, publicly available sources or documents, such as tax liens, are usually considered acceptable as reliable sources in Wikipedia [1]. Cla68 (talk) 03:17, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
FYI: Wikipedia:Arbitration_guide#Responding_to_others.27_statements Please comment as other editors do, in your own section. thanks Inclusionist (talk) 04:27, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Noted for future - however I do not propose to refactor at present as the case has been emphatically rejected by the committee --Matilda talk 04:34, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Actually, the fact that Joe the Plumber has a few skeletons in his closet is one of the reasons for his notability. The media is having a field day with it all. The Washington Post mentions his tax problems [2]. So, in this case, using those tax lien documents as a primary source is fine. Cla68 (talk) 06:27, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
He has world-wide notability (I am an Australian and he has been reported here). Over here his notability does not extend to his skeletons. As mentioend elsewhere WP:NPF seems to be against skeletons regardles of the reliability of the sources. --Matilda talk 06:33, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I excluded your comment from my vote count on tax lien. I have inserted your "vote." Anomalocaris (talk) 06:58, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

BLP privacy policy for limited public figures

I think that the current deadlock on Joe the plumber is due to unclear BLP policy on limited public figures. I've made a proposal to clarify the policy here. Since you are one of the parties involved in the dispute, this is a notification for your input on the proposed policy clarification. VG 10:56, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Australian Diaspora

Hi, comments have been requsted on the Australian diaspora article which you created, please see Talk:Australian diaspora#Request for comments - Is this article neutral, notable, verifiable etc.?. Many thanks, SeventhHell (talk) 05:05, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks for your balanced responses to discussion and further work on this article. My only significant rejoinder would be that the main diaspora article's definition has problems (noted on discussion page) - (the word "voluntarily" crept in at some point in the edit history which I tried to trace but there have been over 1000 edits because of edit wars, so I gave up). The diaspora studies definition is more accurate to my mind but it is again unsourced, dictionaries carry various definitions, and I think it is important for a tight definition to be applied for an article to be encycopaedic. In any case I think I have been polemical enough for the time being and the discussion page has enough of my commentary, your suggestions sound good. Many thanks and kind regards, SeventhHell (talk) 23:09, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

UBank

This article was an interesting find, considering this user created the UBank article. Hmm ... -- Mattinbgn\talk 22:04, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes fascinating

Gledhill's blog post received strong criticism from 'Frank Booth' -- who she found to be posting from the network name 'NABAUS' with the DNS details 'DNSAU00.NATIONAL.COM.AU'. iTnews has seen screenshots which appear to support this allegation.
However, according to the NAB switchboard, no one called 'Frank Booth' works at either NAB or UBank.

At least here he declares it is a pseudonym. I hadn't made the connection! Though I thought it seemed likely that something might be up because of the internet manipulation. --Matilda talk 22:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Re:Map Copyright Issue

I was thinking of that too mam, this map might be a copyright violation, but the site from which it is taken, it states '©1997-2004 Wildlife of Pakistan-All Rights Reserved'. Doesn't that mean the copyright is expired? If not so then kindly delete the image and excuse my ignorance, I don't know much about copyrights, I am new here. Thankyou. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 13:16, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Copyright concerns; tagging

Hello, Matilda. Thank you for pointing out your copyright concerns with Image:Pakistan rivers map.jpg. I'm dropping you a line just to let you know that the tag that you placed on the image, {{copyvio}}, is specifically used for text that violates copyright. For images that are clear copyright violations, you can follow the procedure for speedy deletion. For images that are suspected to be copyright violations, we have a review board for possibly unfree images. For images used under suspect non-free content criteria, we have non-free content review. Other image copyright concerns are handled in various ways (see Wikipedia:Guide to image deletion for specifics.) I have corrected the tag on this image so that it can be handled in the proper venue, but I wanted to let you know for future use in case you should encounter another image that raises concerns. Thanks again for pointing out the potential problem. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:30, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

If you have time and/or interest

Hi Matilda, as the result of a gentle rollback I performed on the article Galah, Victoria a friendly discussion has ensued here. Whilst it may not ultimately be the best location for such a communication to fully develop, for now, if you have the time and/or interest, can you provide your thoughts also? With thanks. --VS talk 09:34, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

G'day Wikimedian :-)

Whilst it's quite likely you'll have heard this news on the grapevine, in your email inbox, or even in person - I thought that it was sufficiently exciting to warrant giving each of you a 'new messages' orange bar! This particular orange bar has been brought to you to let you know that Wikimedia Australia is now open for members!

I'm not on the committee or anything, and that's where the credit is due in getting everything to this point, but I think it would be absolutely fantastic for folks who wish to support the australian wiki community, to go ahead and sign up - we're quite likely to be the world's fatest growing chapter at the moment! Join Us :-)

Here's a little more about membership, and the mailing list in particular is well worth signing up to as well, and is a good forum to get answers to any questions answered, or to share any ideas. I've dropped these notes in under my own steam, and you've received one because you're on this list - feel free to ask me any questions, or anything - I can certainly point you in the right direction :-) cheers all, Privatemusings (talk) 04:03, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

There is never any need ...

for you to apologise for coming to my talk page. I appreciate your return by the way and I like the way you have reminded us all about the genealogical relationship to history. Wagga Wagga suburbs

Well I've just created Moorong, New South Wales‎ (Removed Flowerdale as it's isn't a officially classed as a suburb by NSW Geographical Names Board) but just need create Wagga Wagga East and Gobbagombalin. I will also be tring to expand the Ladysmith and Gumly Gumly articles as well as Leeton and Griffith. Bidgee (talk) 21:04, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Hey nice stub Bidgee. (I always thought this area was part of San Isidore, New South Wales).--VS talk 23:14, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
    • So did I! But doing a little research on the Council database, also looking at the Library and on the NSW GNB site showed that Moorong is bigger then I first thought. Been a rather long day which I didn't get to do all the things I wanted to do today but I left those for another time. Also nice to come home to see some moron lit a Paper Bark tree which got up into the powerlines and phoneline (Above ground) which is stuffing up my net ATM.
