Cross-country skiing?

Is this project intended to include cross-country skiing in its scope? If so, the reference to going up and down mountains is limiting. Therefore, I would recommend, instead of "This includes the companies, mountains, and athletes. Everybody is welcome to join, no matter how you get down the mountain in one or two planks (or up)." This includes the manufacturers of ski and snowboard equipment, alpine and cross-country skiing venues, and notable athletes, who participate in the various forms of skiing and snowboarding. Requesting a Single Page Move / Title Change: Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort to Lee Canyon

Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort was officially renamed as "Skye Canyon" on Nov. 9, 2015. I request that the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_Ski_and_Snowboard_Resort) be changed/moved to live under "Lee Canyon" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Canyon).

Kaforney, it seems that the resort is an entity contained within the canyon and does not comprise the whole canyon. It appears to be properly called out in Lee Canyon. The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort used to be the name of the entity contained within the Canyon, but now Lee Canyon is both the name of the resort as well as the canyon in which the resort is located. I know it's a little mixed up, but they did rename the resort in Nov 2015 (references of the announcement are cited in my original post). It's been rebranded with a new URL, etc. to reflect the name change. Perhaps the page should be titled, "Lee Canyon Resort," or "Lee Canyon (Ski and Snowboard Resort)," etc., to differentiate it from the actual Canyon? Not sure how this situation is usually handled on Wikipedia, but I do think the page should reflect the resort's current name. Thanks for your quick response btw - just now seeing it! Kaforney, since the resort doesn't call itself "Lee Canyon Resort", but simply "Lee Canyon", I like your idea of "Lee Canyon (Ski and Snowboard Resort)", as a title, so I've changed the article to that title and made a few updates in the text to reflect the name. Parallel Slalom and Parallel Giant Slalom pages

Now that Parallel slalom and Parallel giant slalom / Parallel Giant Slalom are being contested in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup as well as the FIS Snowboard World Cup, it is perhaps time to have actual articles about them, rather than redirecting readers to other pages.

When created, the pages originally redirected to the pages for their mother disciplines (i.e. Slalom skiing and Giant slalom). But, over the past few years, these redirects have been changed multiple times to point towards various pages specifically about snowboarding.

The past couple of days, I have changed the redirects back to pointing to the pages for their mother disciplines. But, this is not ideal as these pages only talk about the "normal" version - they do not have sections about the parallel version.

The ideal soloution would be to do away with the redirects altogether and have actual articles about the parallel disciplines.

I am not knowledgable about Alpine skiing to write them myself. So, would anybody else like to take up the mantle?

Possible renames Super Combined

In 2010 the super combined replaced the combined in the Olympics. Below are some articles that could be renamed:
Alpine skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Women's combined, Alpine skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's combined, Alpine skiing at the 2014 Winter Olympics – Women's combined, Alpine skiing at the 2018 Winter Olympics – Men's combined.

Idea for formatting FIS World Cup standings

Hey there Project Skiing and Snowboarding!

On my sandbox is the 2018-19 Women's Downhill standings but in the motorsport format template. I would like to know if anyone likes it and if it's a viable way to display the standings as with the current format, you only see the top 5 in each discipline.

Again, I'm just asking for an opinion from someone who edits winter sport pages regularly (while I'm a motorsport editor, I am a winter sports enthusiast as well).

Ingemar Stenmark

Deacon Vorbis never discuss matters. Instead he/she simply deletes every effort in order to discuss improvements to an article. Not only at his/her own page, but also at other discussion pages. Ingmar Stenmark was a pretty good slalom and giant slalom sportsman. I think he still holds the record of Word Cup victories, and has two Olympic golds from Lake Placid in 1980, and also a bronze medal from the 1976 Olympics at Innsbruck. Internationally that's about it.

However, and what Decon Vorbits disapproves of, is completely different matters regarding this Alpine skier. In the mid 1970's something which cannot be described as anything else than a super hysteria affected his home country, Sweden. Without any own desire to be famous, Ingmar Stenmark became a society issue beyond the world of sports. Especially when the World Cup races were held on weekdays, schools, offices and manufacturing worker simply took a pause just in order to either watch Stenmark on TV or at least listen to the radio, during the around 20 minutes the second and decisive races took. After around 15 contenders had finished, the competition usually was decided. There is no counterpart to "Ingmar Stenmark hysterin" ("The Ingmar Stenmark Hysteria") in Sweden. Even the Swedish Parliament adjourned at several occasions when Stenmark competed. It's not wrong at all, to state "Sweden stood still" - many times between 1974 and in to the 1980's. This is no exaggeration. Ingmar Stenmark came from a small village in the north, and initially disliked media. This only changed a little. Before Stenmark, Alpine skiing wasn't really known to the general public. (Nordic skiing was the traditional ski-sport in Sweden then). But from the late 1970's and due to the "Stenmark-hysteria", people began traveling to the Alpes or the Scandinavian mountains for this kind of skiing. New alpine hills was opened, also in areas of Sweden which normally don't get much snow. Although nothing of this was anything Stenmark himself had in mind, desired or even spoke of, through the World Cup competitions (and Olympics) he became something like unwilling centre of it all. It is indeed a part of Swedish history. Ingemar Johansson, Björn Borg, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and other well known Swedish sport persons have all been popular, but their impact on society cannot compete with Stenmark. Any Swede who rembember this time will agree.

I've provided a huge amount of sources for all of this, but Deacon Vorbis simply refuse to get it, there is more to this article than sport alone. The use of other languages than English in sources is allowed. Calling it POV, PUFFERY, poor English, cruel English - a new reason every time. And shows not any intention to adjust, help, improve - or even discuss matters as we usually do. (look in the history files of Reversi and its talk-page, for instance.) Contacts to the International Ski Mountaineering Foundation

Hi! My colleagues and I have been at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics as accreditated photographers for Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. I do not just want to make you excited for our photos (about 3,500 are already uploaded to c:Category:2020 Winter Youth Olympics) but I wanted to let you know, that we also made some connections with sports functionaries there.

I made contact with the CEO of the International Ski Mountaineering Foundation which is based in Mondovì, Italy, and told him about the current status of the articles whose content and photos still can be improved. The communication department reached out to me that they are very interested in supporting us. Maybe they can get us access to some sources and accreditations for their events.

Is anyone of you focused on these sports and interested in getting connected? I am afraid that I cannot keep track much of this because I am more focused on summer sports and based in Germany. Draft Robert K. Brinton (mountaineer)

Hello - My father, Robert K. Brinton, was an early ski mountaineer and climber in southern California and was active in the 1930s. My sister and I are in the process of trying to get an article approved on his ski mountaineering and climbing exploits in southern California (Tahquitz), the Whitney area and Whitney Russell Pass, as well as elsewhere in the Western US, Wisconsin, and British Columbia. Perhaps most relevant to your WikiProject are the following: (1) he helped to found the Ski Mountaineers section of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club and named its newsletter the Mugelnoos; (2) together with several ski mountaineering companions he climbed to the top of Whitney Pass by ski (April '37), was among the first to cross the Sierras by ski over the Whitney Russell Pass (May '38), and made a first winter ascent of Banner Peak by ski (March '39). The latter two feats were featured in the LA Times as front-page news.

I'm told that you might be able to help expedite approval of this page. I realize there is a conflict of interest since the article pertains to my father but he died in 1996 so he does not stand to benefit from the article in any way, nor do we. We have made every effort to carefully document what we have written with neutral, verifiable sources. We also have access to some quite interesting photos from the era (which we have not yet uploaded) as my father was an accomplished photographer and documented both the climbs and his fellow climbers (Glen Dawson was a close friend and climbing buddy). Dual Moguls standings of FIS World Cup

Hello.

I'm from the French Wikipedia and I have a mail exchange with Kathrin Hostettler from FIS. It starts with the strange Dual mogul standings for the 2006-2007 season. And it ends in a surprising way (at least for me): she said me they never were any dual moguls ranking in world cup. The standings have always been merged. And indeed they removed every dual moguls rankings from their website! And update the moguls one (for example https://www.fis-ski.com/DB/general/cup-standings.html?sectorcode=FS&seasoncode=2002&cupcode=WC&disciplinecode=MO&gendercode=W&nationcode= is now counting 12 races, it was 9 one week ago). It's true that the displayed scores on the different standings were not consistent, it's far better now (for the few I checked). But it changes our wiki: from 1995-1996 to 2006-2007, and of course for the skier such as Kari Traa who were apparently winning such a dual moguls ranking... My talks with Miss Hostettler is not ended, I'll warm you if there is any new turn appears.

While they may have shown a standing for DM, did any athlete receive a discipline globe (small globe) for DM. IIRC, there was one, but I need to do some research to track it down. Now, for the 2021-2022 ski season, there will be separate discipline globes awarded. This is a step towards getting DM in the next Olympics as a separate event. What happens when one ski area becomes part of another?

Timberline Lodge ski area recently announced that the former Summit Ski Area, which they have owned for several years, is now called Summit Pass and is now part of Timberline (skiable on the same lift ticket).

I'm wondering what you guys think is the correct way to handle this situation. I have already moved the page for Summit to Summit Pass (Oregon), created a redirect page at Summit Ski Area, and updated the name at the List of ski areas and resorts in the United States and Template:Oregon Ski Areas.

But at this point, I'm wondering if the article for Summit Pass should be deleted and its content merged with Timberline Lodge ski area. On the one hand, some separate areas/mountains within larger ski resorts do have their own articles, e.g. Alpental or the four ski areas of Aspen/Snowmass — especially when the areas are non-contiguous, as is currently the case with Summit Pass and Timberline (although a gondola connecting the two has been proposed). And as the oldest ski area in the Northwest, Summit Pass does have quite a bit of history of its own. On the other hand, it's no longer an independent business entity and thus might not be considered notable enough to have its own article. Certainly, it wouldn't have one if it had always been part of Timberline.

Podium count

A user is pledging to remove the podium count in the ski world cup, claiming that no medals are awarded. But the fact that the template that bears medal in the name is used does not mean that there is no need to count the podiums, as for example the FIS website does. --Kasper2006 (talk) 12:16, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Indeed, they shouldn't be in the medals section of the infobox, since no medals are awarded. Medals are awarded in championships (Olympics, World, Juniors). The German wikipedia doesn't matter here, this is the English one. So far, you seem to be the only one having a problem. It has not existed for years in countless skier's biographies, it has existed in a few skier's biographies. User script to detect unreliable sources

Main page: User:Headbomb/unreliable

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

"Ski area" changed from redirect into an article – Is this the right approach?

The ski resort article uses the term, "ski area" throughout, and distinguishes the town from the terrain on which one skis. Until today, ski area was a redirect to "ski resort". It has no references. It appears that the new article arose with no discussion in this forum. This is to initiate that discussion.

In 2013, the US Forest Service expanded the definition of a "ski area" beyond alpine and nordic skiing to include other snow sports, including snowboarding to read, "Ski area – a site and associated facilities that has been primarily developed for alpine or Nordic skiing and other snow sports, but may also include, in appropriate circumstances, facilities necessary for other seasonal or year-round natural resource-based recreation activities, provided that a preponderance of revenue generated by the ski area derives from the sale of alpine and Nordic ski area passes and lift tickets, revenue from alpine, Nordic, and other snow sport instruction, and gross revenue from ancillary facilities that support alpine or Nordic skiing and other snow sports."

Tyrol Basin

Would some members of this WikiProject mind taking a look at Tyrol Basin and assessing it? There's lots of unsourced content in the article and it seems to have a bit of WP:NOTGUIDE feel to it. I recently did some basic MOS cleanup to try and improve the style of the article, but these were all reverted by a new editor named DyslexicNerd 01. @VarietyEditor: IMO the assessment table is one of the few must-be things on the main page. It does not take much space and is basically a good summary of the project, so doesn't need a seperate page for it. Do you mind if I go through the ski areas and modify the article qualities? @VarietyEditor currently there are plenty of decent articles for ski areas that are ranked as like start class or c class... Of course! Anybody can change the qualities, ideally we would follow the Wikipedia guidelines. Learn more about the process here. FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup individual discipline pages

I should begin by noting that I'm happy to see this project has been picked back up and is again active. I've been operating on the fringes of it since the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, when I noticed that only the most recent five years of Alpine Skiing World Cup results had podium lists for the season in the articles and went back to 1967 and started adding them; someone else finished that project after I got to the late 1990s by myself. It helped that I do remember the sport going back to when the FIS World Cup started (and then when Bob Beattie and most of the U.S. (including me, I'm afraid) abandoned it in favor of the World Pro Ski Tour, which ultimately led to the World Cup becoming fully professional after a bitter battle between FIS and the IOC, culminating with the 1984 Winter Olympics).

But during the pandemic in 2020, I got back into it with regard to the individual discipline pages for both men and women, which I wanted to advance enough to prevent their deletion under WP:NOTSTATS (as happened to the 2016 & 2017 individual discipline pages, which I wasn't involved with). And since then, we've kept the individual pages going forward successfully with no requests for deletion. Then this year, thanks largely to Kasper2006 for the initial efforts, which I then followed up on, we have moved those individual discipline pages backward to 2016, so there is a page for either sex and each discipline (downhill, Super-G, giant slalom, slalom, combined, and parallel) for every year that it has been competed as a separate discipline from 2016 to 2023 (eight years in total). Unfortunately, I'm out of time to do any more of the prior years for the next six months, in part because my daughter and son-in-law just had another grandchild (yea!) and in part because I want to make sure that I standardize all the recent years and fix errors on some of the older pages of this type.

If anyone else wants to create and work on these pages for the earlier years, the format should be similar to the 2016 pages. I've limited the lists for years going backward to the top 25 and ties -- basically only the people who were (or would have been) eligible to compete in the World Cup finals (my criterion was that I didn't want to show anyone not eligible, but there could be more than 25 in case of ties or people using their status as 500+ pointers and ending up 26th or 27th, like Mikaela Shiffrin in downhill last year). And I'm not an administrator or other bureaucrat here, but if you want to avoid disputes over WP:NOTSTATS with editors who don't want these articles in Wikipedia (and we have more than a few of those), here's a piece of advice taken straight from the Wiki instructions pages: "articles with statistics should include explanatory text providing context". That means adding links to at least a couple of articles from reliable sources, generally pertaining to the battle for the season championship, along with descriptions of the situation. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Proposed for deletion (PROD): Caledon Ski Club

FYI, the article Caledon Ski Club has been proposed for deletion (WP:PROD). The first sentences summarize the subject this way:

• "Caledon Ski Club is a private ski and snowboarding club in the Caledon Hills. It is located just outside the village of Belfountain, about 45 minutes northwest of Toronto, Ontario."

The nominator wrote this summary of their concerns:

• "Fails WP:ORG and WP:GNG. No coverage in reliable sources."

Major RfC on capitalization of all our articles

I thought this was a done deal back in this 2022 RFC but obviously not. A handful of editors did another rfc with no sports projects input at all. And it's being challenged because we just noticed it. This could affect almost every single tennis and Olympic article we have, and goodness know how many other sports. Some may have already been moved it you weren't watching the article. And not just the article titles will be affected but all the player bios that link to the articles. Sure the links would be piped to the right place if thousands of articles moved, but if the wording in a bio still said 2023 Wimbledon Championships – Men's singles or Swimming at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 metre backstroke that would likely need to be changed by hand. There is also talk of removing the ndash completely.

Perhaps this is what sports projects want and perhaps not. Either way I certainly don't want projects ill-informed as the last RfC was handled. Express your thoughts at the following rfc. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:04, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
