Not Lauryn in the Photo

[edit]

Hi, I believe you chose the current photo for Lauryn Hill? This photo is actually of Erykah Badu. Would you please change it? (I'm not Wiki-savvy)Thanks! :)60.234.145.18 (talk) 05:35, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Photographer's Barnstar
For your work in adding free images and photographs to the project. -- Kendrick7talk 03:48, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Karppinen! Could you direct me to the WP guideline or policy that supports this? A non-free, fair-use tagged image of a deceased celebrity should be moved from the Infobox/lead because it's "non-free"? And it should be replaced with a mug shot only because that image is free, regardless of how it might look? I don't understand the motivation behind this change - could you help me? Thank you! Doc9871 (talk) 20:05, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, actually this policy seems to support my edit. There's this rule: "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." For Jim Morrison, we actually have free equivalent available, and it is the 1970 mug shot. It's unfortunate we don't have any other free images of Morrison right now, but there will be better ones after that someday. --Karppinen (talk) 20:37, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm well aware of NFCC#1; I don't think you're understanding where I'm coming from. Would the free image of Morrison's mug shot serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image, especially in the Infobox? No way. We have non-free image tags for good reason. No free equivalent is available (or could be created) because Jim Morrison is dead, and no free images are known to exist of him. A free (or "non-free") mug shot doesn't work in a situation where a celebrity is not known primarily as a criminal. Is it a free image or no image argument you're working with? If you're arguing "free" only because it's a mug shot, you might be surprised... Doc9871 (talk) 20:57, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why couldn't we just produce a cropped version of that free 1970 picture? Then it wouldn't be that obvious anymore that it is a mugshot (and using that photo wouldn't imply anymore that Morrison was a criminal). Unfortunately the remaining Doors members / the Doors Office in LA has not been very cooperative in providing a free image of Morrison when contacted last year. --Diggindeeper (talk) 21:45, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply, Diggindeeper and Karppinen. To demonstrate just how hard I am working on trying to get any free image even identified, please see this and this. We don't need to crop this image, especially for the Infohttp://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_link.pngbox (where it still gives undue weight to the subject). I appreciate your concerns about WP:NFCC, but the image in the Infobox (as it is) is properly tagged and has been seen by countless administrators. I'm trying to get free some images of Jim Morrison here, believe me. But until then, a non-free image versus one that paints the subject in a negative light should suffice for the Infobox... Doc9871 (talk) 06:45, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I revised your Paul Hill photo edit because the photo you uploaded is much less recent that the current one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.177.34.37 (talk) 04:31, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The previous photo (which will be deleted soon) violates the copyright policy, because it is non-free, and photo I uploaded is not. The free image shall not be replaced by non-free image. I recommend that you read the copyright policy. Karppinen (talk) 11:36, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Matti Juhani Saari

[edit]

Hey Karppinen. I spent quite a bit writing a bio on Matti Juhani Saari, yet you chose to delete it and reinstall the re-direct to the shooting, that he perpetrated. You state that he is "a non-notable person". I don't understand this. The killers of Columbine High School and Virginia Tech all have bios on Wikipedia. Why not Saari? —Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrJahnsen (talkcontribs) 17:42, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I didn't "delete" Saari's bio, I just undid it. Information about him can be found on Kauhajoki school shooting article.
I am Finnish, and I have paid attention on the news related to Kauhajoki incident. That's why I think that the shooter himself has not had significant amount of news coverage. By that I mean that most of the reports have been about the event, motives, etc. It's just my opinion, but even as a guy who committed the deadliest peacetime attack in the History of Finland, killing ten people, he is only notable for one event.
The Columbine killers and Seung-Hui Cho have had way more significant news coverage than Matti Saari, but not all spree killers are not notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. For example, Pekka-Eric Auvinen, Robert A. Hawkins, Tim Kretschmer and Amy Bishop, are non-notable, just like Saari. Karppinen (talk) 18:18, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I realise it wasn't a delete. Please excuse if I chose inappropriate words. Thanks for the link to notable for one event. That explained things more or less to perfection, and I agree that Saari was not exactly Abraham Zapruder or Gavrilo Princip and that an article about the event itself suffices.

Your cropped Jim Morrison mug shot

[edit]

We'll have to have another little chat, it seems, concerning your cropping a mug shot and nominating the original for deletion over your cropped version, which alters the original image significantly. I guess I haven't made myself clear enough, pointing you to policy and whatnot... Doc9871 (talk) 15:11, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to be more polite and think twice before making any drastic changes like that. By the way, that image is public domain, and now on Commons. Karppinen (talk) 17:16, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Being polite is always good; but drastic changes are not discouraged in any way (be bold!) If you feel something is wrong for the site, by all means act on it. People will respond, one way or the other. Thank you for getting the image on the Commons, Karppinen! We are all wrong from time to time (believe me, I've had some pretty embarrassing mistakes in my short time here). You were not wrong to drastically make a change (and you weren't really that impolite, either) - it's just the change itself was not sound. No worries, and happy editing :> Doc9871 (talk) 07:12, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Morrison Again

[edit]

Hello, Karppinen! I see you're back at the Jim Morrison article, replacing the image yet again with another supposedly "free" image. Well, guess what: that image is not free and should not even be on the Commons. I don't speak Danish, but Google Translate clearly shows that the image you cropped as "free" is certainly not free. Here's some excerpts:

"This illustration is copyrighted. It is permissible to use the artwork outside the framework of the Great Danish for private / personal use. This means that for example, you may use the image in school assignments, for own notes and the like. However, you may not use the material commercially, and you may not transmit digital copies to friends and acquaintances or other people outside your household or spread material in multiple copies for multiple users."

"Using pictures. We sell rights. Art gets you permission to use all sorts of artworks in all imaginable contexts. For tuition, books, iPod, internet, on textile ... Visual representing 57,000 Danish and foreign artists. We negotiate on behalf of the artist and gets you quickly a permission to use their works. Rights to reproduce works of art can we get, but we do not deliver the imagery. Instead, you can often borrow or purchase images from museums, galleries or from the artist himself."

Wikipedia counts as "you may not use the material commercially, and you may not transmit digital copies to friends and acquaintances or other people outside your household or spread material in multiple copies for multiple users." The website sells this image. An image from Corbis or Getty is the same as this one; and if you had read the FfD discussions concerning File:Jim Morrisonsinging.jpg, you would see that the image you replaced has an ambiguous copyright status, and your cropped image certainly does not.

So, I'm going to undo your change yet again. If you want to put the image up for deletion, you are certainly free to do so. I will work on getting the photos clearly copyrighted to Jan Persson off of the Commons as they are not in the public domain: protecting the commercial interests of Mr. Persson is of greater immediate importance than removing a properly tagged photo with no clear copyright status. If you are truly concerned with protecting WP from possible copyright infringement, I would recommend you assist me in removing File:The Doors in Copenhagen 1968.jpg, File:Jim Morrison in 1968.jpg and File:John Densmore in 1968.jpg from the Commons. All are very clearly copyrighted and certainly not in the public domain, even in the U.S. Cheers... Doc talk 04:08, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I uploaded the cropped ones as I honestly assumed that the copyright license in original was valid and its uploader knew what he was doing. (I don't speak Danish either.) However, you are probably correct about the copyright status of Danish photograph, and I think that deletion discussion regarding these three images on Commons seems to be an appropriate measure. And please, do not get me wrong about copyright issues. I don't want to put File:Jim Morrisonsinging.jpg up for deletion. As a matter of fact, it should be kept now when there are no good free images of him available with a valid license. But once a free image of Morrison will be available, the non-free image has to be removed. It's as simple as that. I respect the copyright and have never intended to upload copyright violations. Thank you for your concern. Karppinen (talk) 12:27, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I was a bit "snippy" - I certainly know you were only acting in good faith, and that you didn't know about the Copenhagen image being unfree. I nominated that one for deletion at the Commons, and will wait to see what they say before worrying about the crops. I didn't even know it was unfree until I Google translated the stuff from the website, and it reminded me of research I did into Corbis and Getty the last time the image was put up for deletion. That research also pretty much convinced me that no free images of Morrison exist save for the Florida mugshot, and the same is probably true for the band. They are still a hot commodity (and always will be iconic), and anyone with clear copyrights to an image will want to sell its use to any website including WP - as Corbis confirmed when I e-mailed them. Morrison esp. (being deceased) is a classic example of when we need fair-use; esp. when the copyright is not clearly established as is so far the case of File:Jim Morrisonsinging.jpg. I want there to be free images of Morrison and the complete band during any point in their career, too, but I haven't seen any satisfactory evidence of their existence yet. Cheers :> Doc talk 04:47, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you finally win with the fair-use image of Morrison singing being gone. A shame, really. However, I have seen a million of these Flickr images in articles, and the license was in place before I even looked into it. Good thing I did, right? I don't expect you'll make an issue of this any further, as you'd have to take it up with Flickr first, then the Flickr Upload Bot, who approved the license (and that it was in place at the time that I uploaded it) onto the Commons. Anything is better than some blurry overhead shot of Morrison at a concert. Cheers... Doc talk 03:17, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
With all due respect, I disagree on two things. I don't think that the removal of that fair-use image has made me "win" anything. Second, I don't believe that "anything is better than some blurry overhead shot of Morrison at a concert". Yes, that cropped photograph is not exactly among the finest photographs in Wikipedia, but as we know, "any image on the Internet" just isn't automatically more suitable than that one. Here's why: 1. Morrison is identifiable in the picture, 2. I have seen images (on Wikipedia) with worse quality than this one, 3. the copyright policy, but we already discussed about it.
That being said, I am relieved to observe that you found a new photo from Flickr. It is a great find and certainly an improvement. Now that it has been added in the article, I think this issue has been settled. --Karppinen (talk) 10:56, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's been settled. You can take half the credit for the image being there: if you hadn't removed the FU one I wouldn't have been curious enough to see if there was a suitable Flickr one out there. Cheers :> Doc talk 12:51, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Karppinen. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of David Miscarriage, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not blatantly vandalism or a hoax. Thank you. nancy 16:35, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Soulja Boy Tell 'Em

[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Template:Soulja Boy Tell 'Em a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Jafeluv (talk) 11:36, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's a bit odd. I don't recall having done any "cut and paste"-move recently. Karppinen (talk) 18:08, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Scientologist categories

[edit]

Hi Karppinen, re applying Scientologist categories (someone referred to your doing so here), please note WP:BLPCAT policy. Applying such cats requires self-identification as a Scientologist (e.g. a statement from the individual on their official blog or website, like this, or an interview in a reputable publication, like this). In addition, the people concerned should be notable for being a Scientologist in some way (i.e. there should be plentiful third-party references to their religion). A third-party source referring to a person being a Scientologist (or an adherent of any other religion, or gay, for that matter) is not enough; there have been too many cases where such sources have been wrong.

While I'm here, the page Wikipedia:Neutrality_in_Scientology may also be of interest to you. Cheers, --JN466 02:17, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your advice. I believe that the third-party reference I added (article in New York Times) has accurate information about religious views of certain individuals. After all, the article has information about other prominent Scientologists as well. Karppinen (talk) 18:11, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Unfortunately, WP:BLPCAT is policy, so we really do need self-identification (which usually can be sourced with a bit of effort) before we apply categories, or include people in lists.
I recall a good few Scientology-related cases in particular – Gloria Gaynor, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Chaka Khan, Van Morrison etc. – where usually highly reliable sources ascribed a religious identity to people that was at clear odds with these individuals' own explicit self-identification in equally reliable sources; hence the insistence in policy to rely on self-identification only. I am sorry, that's how it is, and I hope I can get you on board with this. (I've added a self-ID source to the Suplee bio). --JN466 20:30, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have undone the redirect you did of Lil B back on 26 December 2010. You had redirected, asserting that the subject did not meet WP:MUSIC. At this point, I believe that the subject meets WP:GNG, as there are a number of reliable sources that discuss the subject in detail. While I am aware that simply redirected is technical acceptable per WP:Deletion policy#Redirection. However, as per the same policy, now that I have disputed the claim, I ask that you continue discussion on the article's talk page, and if you still feel subject is not notable, take the article to AfD. Qwyrxian (talk) 01:17, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Qwyrxian, in December the Lil B article was poorly written and referenced. Since the rapper had not (and still has not) released any singles or albums that have charted, I genuinely thought that he had not enough notability to deserve an article. However, I acknowledge that my actions concerning that article should have been more deliberate. You have done good job by improving and adding reliable sources to the article, which appears to meet WP:GNG guideline now. Karppinen (talk) 15:34, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Tag Team.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tag Team.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. mabdul 14:07, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Warren Sabir McGlone.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:14, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:Beef soundtrack.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free album cover being used in a decorative manner in Beef (film)#Soundtrack. Non-free album cover art is generally allowed to be used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone articles about albums, but its use in other articles is generally only allowed when the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is evident. There is no such commentary for this particular album cover anywhere in the article, and the use of soundtrack album cover art in articles about films or TV programs is generally not allowed for this reason as explained in WP:FILMSCORE

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:58, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Main Source.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Main Source.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 19:52, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
