There is no way of knowing whether the region was "sparsely populated" or not, as Pickett, the area's historian, was himself a Euro-American settler who benefited from such practices. This language continues one of ethnocentrism which would eventually give way to Manifest Destiny. Continuing this language gives a false representation of the U.S. project as natural and necessary. undo
