Electoral history of Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States (1993–2001); 40th and 42nd Governor of Arkansas (1979–1981 and 1983–1992).

1974 congressional election

Bill Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas in 1946.[1] After graduating from Georgetown University, he won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University.[1] After receiving his law degree from Yale University in 1973, he decided to contest the 1974 congressional election from Arkansas's third congressional district.[2] He announced his candidacy on February 25, 1974.[3][4]: 38  At the age of 27, he was one of the youngest candidate for a congressional election in the nation. While campaigning, he addressed gatherings in small rural areas of the state. When addressing these gatherings, he often attacked Richard Nixon, the Republican president of the United States for his policies in Vietnam, and his alleged involvement in the frowing Watergate scandal.[4]: 40  Two weeks before the primary, he was able to raise $36,000 (equivalent to $222,413 in 2023) from donations.[5]: 174  He led the primaries with almost 44% of the vote, against relatively better-known opponents including Gene Rainwater, Arkansas state senator. Since no candidate got a majority of vote in the primary, a runoff election was conducted. Clinton easily won the runoff, receiving 69% of the vote.[4]: 40

In the general election, he challenged the incumbent Republican representative John Paul Hammerschmidt. Clinton continued attacking Hammerschmidt for his support of Nixon, which successfully helped Clinton to garner support of some moderate Republican voters,[4]: 42  But soon after President Nixon's resignation on August 8, 1974, Clinton's lead faded as the country's attention turned to other matters.[6]: 298  In September, he was lagging in the polls with 23% of support to Hammerschmidt's 59%.[3] During the last weeks of campaigning, various newspapers including including the Arkansas Gazette endorsed Clinton.[3] On the election day, Clinton narrowly lost the race to Hammerschmidt,[6]: 298  receiving almost 48.2% of the vote. Clinton calls his 1974 congressional campaign as the best campaign he ever ran.[3]
