The following fictional characters from the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling are students during protagonist Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts.

Hannah Abbott

Template:HP character Hannah Abbott is a Hufflepuff student in Harry's year, described as "pink-faced" with blonde hair worn in pigtails. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, she was initially skeptical of housemate Ernie Macmillan's belief that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin, saying that Harry had "always seemed so nice". During the hunt for Sirius Black the following year, she theorized that Black could disguise himself as a flowering shrub, a conclusion that, while incorrect, did turn out to have some truth in it. She sported a "Support Cedric Diggory/Potter Stinks" badge during the Triwizard Tournament in her fourth year, although she remains on good terms with Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Hannah is named a Hufflepuff prefect and later joins Dumbledore's Army in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, yet she also appears to be rather high-strung: she is so worried about the upcoming O.W.L. exams that she suffers a nervous breakdown because she feels she is too stupid to take exams, and has to be given a Calming Draught by Madam Pomfrey. During her practical Transfiguration O.W.L, she turns her ferret into a flock of flamingos in an errant attempt to vanish it. However, she is also part of the group of D.A. members who successfully come to Harry's aid against Draco Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle aboard the Hogwarts Express at the end of the year.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Hannah leaves Hogwarts after her mother is murdered by Death Eaters, but she returns in the series finale to take part in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters; she, Lee Jordan and Fred Weasley stand guard over a secret passage together, and Harry later saves her and Seamus Finnigan from Voldemort's curse with a Shield Charm, allowing them to join the fight in the Great Hall.

Hannah, as an adult, married Neville Longbottom and became the landlady of The Leaky Cauldron.

Charlotte Skeoch played Hannah Abbott in the film version of Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire.

Katie Bell

Template:HP Character Katie Bell joins the Gryffindor team in her second year (Harry's first) as a Chaser, and joined Dumbledore's Army in her sixth year. In Half-Blood Prince, she is the only remaining member of the original Gryffindor team that was helmed by Oliver Wood, and she advises Harry not to discriminate in favor of old players like her, but to hold trials for all. She nonetheless succeeds in retaining her spot as Chaser alongside newcomers Ginny Weasley and Demelza Robins.

In the sixth book, Draco Malfoy secretly attempts to use Katie to deliver a fatally-cursed necklace to Albus Dumbledore. Madam Rosmerta, whom Malfoy has placed under the Imperius Curse, gives it to Katie in Hogsmeade, but Katie accidentally touches the necklace through the torn package and is badly cursed. Fortunately, she only touches it with the smallest amount of skin due to a small hole in her glove, but she is hospitalized for several months in St Mungo's. Dean Thomas is named as her temporary replacement on the Gryffindor team, but Katie returns fully healed before the Quidditch Cup final against Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor emerge victorious for the third time since Harry started at Hogwarts. In Deathly Hallows, Katie reunites with Oliver, Alicia and Angelina to assist the D.A. in the battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters at Hogwarts.

Katie briefly appeared in the first two films, and was played by Emily Dale.

In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, due for release in November 2008, she is set to be played by Georgina Leonidas.

Susan Bones

Template:HP character Susan Bones is a Hufflepuff student in Harry's year who wears her hair in a long plait down her back. She is Sorted in Philosopher's Stone, but is not mentioned again in the series until Order of the Phoenix, in which she attends the initial meeting of Dumbledore's Army in the Hog's Head, expresses curiosity over whether Harry could produce a corporeal Patronus, and reveals to Harry that her aunt was Amelia Bones, a high-ranking member of the Wizengamot who had presided at Harry's trial before the term.

Following the breakout of several Death Eaters from Azkaban, including those who murdered her uncle Edgar and his family, she becomes a subject of unwanted notoriety among her fellow students, and she tells Harry that she understood how he felt: "And I don't know how you stand it, it's horrible." She is also part of the group of D.A. members who successfully come to Harry's aid against Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle aboard the Hogwarts Express at the end of the year. Susan's last appearance in the series is in Half-Blood Prince, when she Splinches herself during an Apparition lesson. Though her leg is successfully reattached, the incident leaves her somewhat shaken.

Susan was played in a non-speaking role by Eleanor Columbus (daughter of director Chris Columbus) in the first two films.

Terry Boot

Template:HP character Terry Boot is a Ravenclaw student in Harry's year. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Terry becomes a member of Dumbledore's Army at the first meeting at The Hog's Head. He informs Harry that a portrait in Albus Dumbledore's office had told him the previous year that Harry had slain a Basilisk with Gryffindor's sword, then asks him to confirm it. After one D.A. meeting in the Room of Requirement, Terry is impressed by Hermione Granger's charmed communication-device Galleons distributed among the members, as well as her ability to perform the N.E.W.T.-level Protean Charm, which provoke him to ask her, "How come you're not in Ravenclaw? With brains like yours?" He is among a group of D.A. members who assist Harry when Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle attempt to ambush him aboard the Hogwarts Express at the end of the term.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Terry appears in Horace Slughorn's Advanced Potions class, and is physically punished by the Carrows in his seventh year after shouting an announcement in the Great Hall about Harry, Ron and Hermione's Gringotts break-in and their escape on a dragon. He is among the D.A. members who later seek refuge in the Room of Requirement before Harry's return to Hogwarts and the upcoming final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters, and provides Ron with an explanation of Ravenclaw's diadem.

Terry is the "T. Boot" who checked out Quidditch Through the Ages from the Hogwarts library. He was originally called "Trevor" on Rowling's pre-canon list of Harry's classmates, but the name was ultimately passed on to Neville Longbottom's toad.

Lavender Brown

Template:HP character Lavender Brown is a Gryffindor student and is Ron Weasley's first official girlfriend. She is a close friend of housemate Parvati Patil; they seem to enjoy the same classes, especially Divination, and share many common interests. The two also seem to have a reasonably close relationship with Professor Trelawney, comforting and supporting her in her various crises. Lavender initially believes the Ministry of Magic's smear campaign against Harry, but later joins Dumbledore's Army. When the Blast-Ended Skrewts run amok in the pumpkin patch during a Care of Magical Creatures lesson, Lavender is one of the few students who help round them up rather than take cover in Hagrid's hut. She attends the Yule Ball with Seamus Finnigan in their fourth year.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Lavender and Ron begin dating, and she gives him the tacky nickname of "Won-Won" (much to Harry's relief, Ron never calls her "Lav-Lav" in return). Ron, on the other hand, is not particularly amorous of Lavender himself, but he maintains the relationship in order to instill jealousy in Hermione and to prove that he can "snog" people whenever he wants. Lavender becomes jealous of Ron's friendship with Hermione, and finally splits up with him when she sees him and Hermione leaving Harry's dormitory together, mistakenly under the impression that they had been alone together in there, but Harry was actually present under his Invisibility Cloak under the influence of Felix Felicis, so he could have inadvertently caused them to break up.

Lavender is gravely injured in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters after being blown off a high balcony and being attacked by Fenrir Greyback, but Hermione saves her by hitting Greyback with a Stunning Spell. At that point, she is moving feebly, though it is unknown if she ultimately survives the battle.

Jennifer Smith appeared briefly in a non-speaking role as Lavender in the film version of Prisoner of Azkaban; she is among several of Harry's housemates standing over his hospital wing bed in the aftermath of the Gryffindor-Hufflepuff Quidditch match. In Half-Blood Prince, she will be played by Jessie Cave.

Millicent Bulstrode

Template:HP character Millicent Bulstrode is a Slytherin student in Harry's year, and the first Slytherin in the seven-book series to be Sorted. She is described as having a large, square build, and a jutting jaw; her appearance reminds Harry of a picture he saw in Holidays with Hags.

Millicent is something of a female version of Crabbe and Goyle. In her second year, she is one of the few participants in Gilderoy Lockhart's short-lived Dueling Club, in which she is paired up with Hermione Granger by Severus Snape. The dueling demonstration eventually turns into a wrestling match between the two, ending with Millicent holding Hermione in a tight, painful headlock. Harry struggles to free Hermione from her grasp, showing she is quite strong.

Hermione later attempts to pose as Millicent in order to covertly collect information from Draco Malfoy in the Slytherin common room by preparing some Polyjuice Potion, adding a strand of hair she found on Bulstrode's robes after the Dueling Club scuffle. However, the result is disastrous for Hermione as the hair was actually from Millicent's cat, which causes her to take on the cat's appearance in her human form.

In Order of the Phoenix, her last appearance in the series, Millicent becomes a member of Dolores Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad. She confronts Hermione again in Umbridge's office, and is still large enough to overpower Hermione by pinning her against the wall, causing her to cry and gasp for air; she eventually releases her but expresses immediate disgust in doing so.

In the second movie, Millicent is portrayed by Helen Stuart in a non-speaking walk-on role. She was seated behind Malfoy in Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration class while the history of the Chamber of Secrets was being explained.

Cho Chang

Template:HP character Cho Chang is a Ravenclaw student one year above Harry, and plays Seeker for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. She is best known for being Harry's first crush, first kiss, first girlfriend, and first breakup. She is described as being "very pretty" with long dark hair, and is frequently accompanied by a group of giggling Ravenclaw girlfriends.

In Goblet of Fire, Harry's crush on Cho intensifies and he works up the courage to ask her out to the Yule Ball, but Cho apologizes and replies that she had previously accepted Cedric Diggory's offer, leaving Harry to ignore his own date, Parvati Patil, and jealously obsess about the couple for nearly the entire length of the ball. Nonetheless, Cho is still kind to Harry; much to his relief, she refuses to wear one of Draco Malfoy's "Support Cedric Diggory/Potter Stinks" badges. She and Cedric maintain their relationship until his shocking murder by Peter Pettigrew during the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Cho is one of the first students to believe Harry's declaration of Voldemort's return in Order of the Phoenix, and when invited by Hermione to join Dumbledore's Army, Cho reveals that her parents wish her not to take part in any anti-Ministry of Magic relations, but she joins because she is determined to fight against Voldemort and avenge Cedric's murder. Cho initiates a kiss with Harry under some mistletoe after the last D.A. session before the Christmas holidays; much to Ron and Hermione's amusement, Harry describes the kiss as "wet."

Harry and Cho go out on a date to Madam Puddifoot's on Valentine's Day, but her sustained grief over Cedric's death, her ill-founded jealousy over Harry's friendship with Hermione, and Harry's lack of knowledge about girls all make for a miserable experience. Their relationship is damaged after the outing, and it ends permanently when Dumbledore's Army is exposed following Marietta's betrayal of the group to Dolores Umbridge. Cho defends her friend's actions by saying that Marietta simply made a mistake, and labels Hermione's secret anti-treachery jinxing of the group's list of names a "dirty trick."

However, in the series finale, Cho demonstrates her loyalty when she returns to Hogwarts and joins other D.A. members in hiding in the Room of Requirement prior to engaging in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters; Harry and Cho, united by a common cause, appear on amicable and friendly terms. She shares with Harry the little information known about Ravenclaw's diadem (one of Voldemort's Horcruxes), and offers to escort Harry to the Ravenclaw common room to search for clues, but Ginny hurriedly suggests that Luna Lovegood take Harry up instead.

On October 18, 2007, Rowling revealed during a book signing that Cho had married a Muggle.

Cho appeared in the film versions of Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, and was played by Katie Leung.

Michael Corner

Template:HP character Michael Corner is a Ravenclaw student in Harry's year. He and Ginny Weasley met and began dating after the Yule Ball, but this is not explicitly mentioned in canon until Order of the Phoenix. They attend the initial meeting of Dumbledore's Army at The Hog's Head, which also results in Terry and Anthony tagging along. Michael initially believes that Hermione only wants to form the group in order to pass her Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L. later in the year, and expresses his admiration of Harry's performance in the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament. When Michael duels Ginny during a D.A. meeting, he does not jinx her, either because he does not know the spell or wants to avoid cursing his girlfriend. Ron often questions his intelligence, mainly due to his disapproval of Michael dating his younger sister.

Ginny replaces Harry on the Gryffindor Quidditch team after he is permanently banned by Umbridge, and after Gryffindor defeat Ravenclaw in the Quidditch Final, Michael expresses his displeasure of the result and the relationship ends; she later calls him a "bad loser." He began dating the Seeker from his own team, Cho Chang, fresh from her split with Harry. Michael is one of the few students in Harry's year to matriculate in Slughorn's Advanced Potions class after achieving a high score on his Potions O.W.L.

In Deathly Hallows, Michael is tortured by the Carrows for trying to free a first-year boy from imprisonment during Severus Snape's regime as Hogwarts headmaster; Neville recalls this incident to Harry, Ron and Hermione when the trio return to Hogwarts. He is among the regrouped D.A. members hiding in the Room of Requirement before engaging in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters, and when Harry attempts to reject the D.A.'s offer to help him in his mission, he soon relents due to Michael's protests ("You're just going to leave us in this mess?") and those of other members.

Michael was initially a Hufflepuff on Rowling's original pre-canon classlist that she created prior to the completion of Philosopher's Stone.

Vincent Crabbe

Template:HP character Vincent Crabbe is a Slytherin student in Harry's year; his father, Crabbe Sr., is a Death Eater. He is described as large, with gorilla-like arms and a pudding bowl-style haircut. He is regularly seen alongside his equally dim counterpart Gregory Goyle; the pair act as Malfoy's minions and serve to intimidate fellow students. Crabbe, like Goyle, is a brawn-over-brains type; he is entirely lacking in introspection or inquisitiveness. He seems unable to make up his own mind or to see things his own way; he generally acts upon others' instructions. Nonetheless, Crabbe is depicted as slightly more intelligent than Goyle; in Philosopher's Stone, he is handpicked by Malfoy as his second in the Midnight Duel with Harry that never takes place.

Crabbe, along with Goyle, makes his first and only appearance as new Slytherin Quidditch Beater in the opening match against Gryffindor in their fifth year; after Harry catches the Snitch, he vents his frustration by purposely hitting a Bludger into Harry's back and knocking him off his broom, but receives the light punishment of writing lines. They do not return to the team the following term, as they regularly serve as Malfoy's lookouts during his forays into the Room of Requirement. Crabbe also quarrels with Malfoy for the first time, and after Malfoy leaves the school following the death of Albus Dumbledore just before the end of the term, he and Goyle are left in a state of loneliness.

In Deathly Hallows, Crabbe has sided with the Death Eaters with more conviction than either Goyle or Malfoy. He speaks for the first time, his voice being described as "oddly soft for someone with his huge frame." He has developed into a surprisingly powerful wizard. He and Goyle are mentioned as having excelled in inflicting the Cruciatus Curse on other pupils under Amycus's direction: according to Neville Longbottom, it was "the first time they were the best in anything."

At the same time, Crabbe becomes increasingly independent of Malfoy, well aware of the Malfoy family's falling out of favor with Voldemort. However, while Crabbe gains superficial knowledge of many powerful Dark spells, he neglects to take their potency seriously. During the fight for one of the Horcruxes (Ravenclaw's diadem) with Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Room of Requirement, he defies Malfoy's order to not kill Harry and casually throws around the Avada Kedavra curse. Finally, he summons Fiendfyre and turns the room into a blazing inferno, but it quickly rages beyond his control and ultimately leads to his demise. Ron dispassionately announces Crabbe's death to Malfoy after the survivors escape the Room and reach safety. Crabbe's spell, ironically, destroys the Horcrux.

Jamie Waylett has appeared as Crabbe in all of the Harry Potter films to date.

Colin and Dennis Creevey

Template:HP character Colin and Dennis Creevey are Muggle-born; their father is a milkman. Colin is one year younger than Harry and is in a regular state of excitement; he is delighted at the discovery that he is a wizard, and takes photographs of memorable people, objects and events to send home to his family. He is also starstruck of Harry and goes as far as possible to regularly pursue him for pictures, but Harry quickly tires of Colin's constant attention. During one of Gryffindor's early-morning Quidditch practices, Colin sits in the stands and repeatedly snaps pictures of Harry, and inappropriately photographs Ron vomiting slugs after his curse directed at Draco Malfoy backfires. Ironically, Colin's camera later proves to be a lifesaver when he attempts to take a picture of the Basilisk, therefore avoiding the creature's direct and fatal eye contact, and is only Petrified. He joins Dumbledore's Army in his fourth year.

Dennis is two years younger than Colin and shares his brother's near-constant enthusiasm; he can barely contain his excitement about having fallen out of his boat and into the lake on the way to the castle and being pushed back in by the resident giant squid. During the Triwizard Tournament, he and Colin try to rework a stack of "Support Cedric Diggory/Potter Stinks" badges into reading "Support Harry Potter," but only succeed in changing the badges to "Potter Really Stinks." In Order of the Phoenix, Dennis joins Colin in the D.A., even though he is underage at the time and therefore prohibited from visiting Hogsmeade. At one D.A. meeting in the Room of Requirement, their attempts at the Expelliarmus Charm go awry and result in books flying off the shelves.

Colin does not return for his sixth year at Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows, and despite being too young to take part in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters, he sneaks back into the castle to participate, and dies in combat. His body is recovered by Neville and Oliver Wood, and Harry somberly notices how small he is in death. It is not stated whether or not Dennis was involved in the battle.

Hugh Mitchell played Colin in the film version of Chamber of Secrets, and voiced the character in the video game adaptation of Order of the Phoenix, in which Colin has a relatively prominent role; Harry has to help him on three separate occasions.

Cedric Diggory

Template:HP character Cedric Diggory is a Hufflepuff student two years older than Harry. In addition to being a Hufflepuff prefect, he was the house Quidditch captain and Seeker. His father is Amos Diggory, who works at the Ministry of Magic. Cedric is first mentioned in in Prisoner of Azkaban when he is described by the Gryffindor Chasers as "strong and silent" amid giggles prior to the Hufflepuff-Gryffindor match, and as a character he shows a notable streak of modesty and fairness; when he catches the Snitch and wins the match after Harry falls off his broomstick following an encounter with the Dementors, he wants the end result nullified and the match replayed.

In Goblet of Fire, Cedric is selected as the Hogwarts champion for the Triwizard Tournament. After Harry is also picked to compete, Draco Malfoy makes "Support Cedric Diggory/Potter Stinks" badges, which Cedric tries to discourage his housemates from wearing. For the First Task, Cedric transfigures a rock into a dog in order to distract his dragon and successfully retrieve his golden egg, but he receives a burn on his cheek in the process. He is later Cho Chang's date for the Yule Ball.

As compensation for Harry's warning about the dragons prior to the First Task, Cedric assists Harry in solving the clue of the Second Task by telling him to take a bath with the egg in the prefects' bathroom, and just "mull things over in the hot water." He is the second of the four champions to reach the village of the merpeople and rescue his hostage, using a Bubble-Head Charm, but surfaces one minute over the one-hour time limit.

During the Third Task, Harry saves Cedric's life twice while in the maze, and when they reach the Triwizard Cup, Cedric refuses to take it without Harry, so they grab hold of it together. The cup turns out to be a Portkey which transports them to the Little Hangleton graveyard, where Lord Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew await Harry's arrival; Pettigrew murders Cedric on the spot upon Voldemort's order to "kill the spare." In the midst of the Priori Incantatem effect during Harry's duel with Voldemort, Cedric's spirit appears and asks Harry to take his body back to his parents. The breakup of the spell provides a distraction that enables Harry to escape the graveyard with Cedric's body in tow.

Despite an attempted cover-up of the incident by the Ministry, Dumbledore candidly reveals the true nature of Cedric's demise to the students at the end-of-term feast, stating that to attribute it to an accident would be an injustice: ''Remember that, and Cedric Diggory will not have died in vain. You remember that, and we'll celebrate a boy who was kind and honest and brave and true right to the very end."

Cedric appeared in the film version of Goblet of Fire, and was played by Robert Pattinson.

Marietta Edgecombe

Template:HP character Marietta Edgecombe is a Ravenclaw student (age unknown) with curly reddish-blonde hair, and is part of Cho Chang's cadre of giggling Ravenclaw girlfriends. Marietta's mother is Madam Edgecombe, who works for the Floo Network Authority in the Ministry of Magic.

Marietta joins Dumbledore's Army, whose objective is to defy the Ministry's methods of teaching defensive magic by secretly training students in combat, against her wishes out of peer pressure from Cho. She reluctantly attends the meetings, and in one instance, Cho accidentally singes Marietta's robe sleeve with a botched Expelliarmus Charm. However, Marietta becomes an informant and betrays the group to Umbridge, which is not without consequences: The parchment that all the members signed back at The Hog's Head was jinxed by Hermione Granger, which in turn caused purple pustules spelling the word "SNEAK" to break out across Marietta's face. Umbridge attempts to goad her into revealing crucial information about the D.A., but Marietta is too terrified to show her face or even speak. Kingsley Shacklebolt then swiftly and secretly modifies her memory with an Obliviate Charm. The incident leads to the breakup of Harry and Cho, who attempts to justify her friend's actions to Harry by insisting that "she was a good person [who] just made a mistake," and that it was difficult for Marietta to have a parent serving in the Ministry. Rowling revealed in a chat session after the release of Deathly Hallows that the "SNEAK" eventually faded, but still left a few scars.

In the film adaptation of Order of the Phoenix, Marietta's betrayal of the D.A. is instead committed by Cho, under the influence of the Veritaserum potion. Marietta's name can be seen along with those of other D.A. members on the movie's promotional site and on some official merchandise, but she does not actually appear in the film.

Justin Finch-Fletchley

Template:HP character Justin Finch-Fletchley is a Hufflepuff student in Harry's year, and a Muggle-born who was originally headed for Eton until he discovered that he was a wizard at age 11. He is Sorted in Philosopher's Stone but makes his first proper appearance in Chamber of Secrets, in which he is threatened by a snake conjured up by Malfoy during Lockhart's disastrous Duelling Club, and Harry orders the snake to relent by speaking Parseltongue; it is initially believed that Harry was encouraging the snake to attack. Despite Ernie Macmillan's subsequent order that he stay in his dormitory, Justin is later Petrified by the basilisk along with Colin Creevey, Hermione and Penelope Clearwater.

In Goblet of Fire, under the impression that Harry was attempting to steal fellow Hufflepuff and Triwizard Tournament entrant Cedric Diggory's glory by entering the competition, Justin and Ernie temporarily give Harry the silent treatment. Justin joins Dumbledore's Army in his fifth year; during practice of the Expelliarmus Charm at one meeting, Luna Lovegood succeeds in disarming him, but also in entangling him in his robes and causing his hair to stand on end. He is part of the group of D.A. members who successfully defend Harry against Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle aboard the Hogwarts Express at the end of the term.

In the film version of Chamber of Secrets, Justin was played by Edward Randell.

Seamus Finnigan

Template:HP character Seamus Finnigan is a Gryffindor student in Harry's year who is described as having sandy hair. He is a huge Quidditch fan (he attends the Quidditch World Cup and supports the Kenmare Kestrels), and is best friends with housemate Dean Thomas. His mother is a witch and his father a Muggle, who only found out his wife's secret after their marriage; according to Seamus, it was "a bit of a nasty shock for him when he found out."

He attends the Yule Ball with Lavender Brown in his fourth year, and they also help round up the Blast-Ended Skrewts after they run amok during Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures class the next year. Seamus is initially influenced by the Ministry's smear campaign against Harry, and his mother nearly prevents him from returning to Hogwarts. He engages in a heated argument with Harry on the first night of the new term over the Daily Prophet's allegations that Harry had merely fabricated the story in a bid for further attention, but he later realizes his mistake, offers his apologies to Harry, and becomes a late addition of Dumbledore's Army. In Half-Blood Prince, Seamus refuses to allow his mother to take him home before Dumbledore's funeral.

Seamus is first mentioned near the climax of Deathly Hallows as one of many D.A. members sheltered in the Room of Requirement during Snape's reign as Hogwarts headmaster when Harry, Ron, Dean and Hermione return before the final battle against Voldemort. He enthusiastically greets Dean at the entrance, yet his face is bruised so badly after being punished by the Carrows that Harry initially fails to recognise him until he speaks. During the battle, he, Ernie Macmillan and Luna Lovegood aid Harry in his fight with the Dementors by conjuring their Patronuses (Seamus's takes the form of a fox).

Devon Murray has played Seamus in all of the Harry Potter films to date.

Anthony Goldstein

Template:HP character Anthony Goldstein is a Ravenclaw student in Harry's year, and is close friends with housemates Michael Corner and Terry Boot. His series debut comes in Order of the Phoenix, in which he becomes a Ravenclaw prefect, and joins Dumbledore's Army after accompanying Michael to the initial meeting at the Hog's Head. Zacharias Smith's numerous attempts to disarm Anthony during one D.A. meeting are comically interrupted by the Weasley twins. Anthony is one of several D.A. members who assist Harry against Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle as they attempt to ambush Harry on the Hogwarts Express at the end of the school year. He goes unmentioned in Half-Blood Prince, but returns in Deathly Hallows as one of many D.A. members holed up in the Room of Requirement who enthusiastically greet Harry upon his return to Hogwarts, prior to entering the final battle with Voldemort and the Death Eaters.

His last name, which literally translates as "gold stone," is of German origin and fairly common among Ashkenazi Jews. Anthony was initially a Hufflepuff on Rowling's original pre-canon classlist that she created prior to the completion of Philosopher's Stone.

Gregory Goyle

Template:HP character Gregory Goyle, often simply referred to as Goyle, is a brutish Slytherin student in Harry's year. His father, Goyle Sr., is a Death Eater.

Goyle is regularly seen in the company of Vincent Crabbe, both of whom act as bodyguards to Draco Malfoy while automatously doing his bidding. Goyle lacks intelligence, magical talent and independent thought, and thus uses only his size and strength to intimidate other students. He nearly fails his exams in his first year, and is unable to give Dolores Umbridge a simple answer after being questioned about Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures lessons. Despite joining the Inquisitorial Squad in his fifth year, Goyle, along with Crabbe, fails his Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L.

At the end of Half-Blood Prince, he and Crabbe are left in a state of loneliness after Malfoy leaves the school following the death of Dumbledore just before the end of the term, but all three are reunited in the climax of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in which they attempt to stop Harry, Ron and Hermione from retrieving Ravenclaw's diadem (one of Voldemort's Horcruxes) from the Room of Requirement. Goyle is knocked unconscious during the ensuing fight between the trio and the Slytherins, but is rescued along with Malfoy by Harry, Ron and Hermione after Crabbe brazenly turns the Room of Requirement into an inferno with a Fiendfyre spell. Crabbe perishes in the blaze, and Goyle and Malfoy are left mourning his death. This is Goyle's last mention in the series, and his ultimate fate is unknown.

Goyle has been played by Joshua Herdman in all of the Harry Potter films to date.

Angelina Johnson

Template:HP Character Angelina Johnson (born late October, 1977) is a tall girl of African descent with long braided hair, and two years older than Harry. She has been a Chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team since her second year, and replaces Oliver Wood as Quidditch captain in her seventh year. She proves to be at least as demanding of her team as Oliver had been, but attributes her hard-driving attitude to the stress of the job, saying that she regrets having been so hard on Oliver when he was captain. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, she unsuccessfully attempts to enter the Triwizard Tournament and attends the Yule Ball with Fred Weasley. In Order of the Phoenix, Lee Jordan openly harbors an attraction to Angelina, interjecting comments about her during his Gryffindor-Slytherin match commentary, much to Professor McGonagall's disdain: "...what a Chaser that girl is, I've been saying it for years but she still won't go out with me..."

Angelina joined Dumbledore's Army in her seventh year, and in Deathly Hallows, she was contacted through her fake Galleon, and reunites with Katie, Alicia, Oliver, and the D.A. at Hogwarts to take part in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters.

In the first three films, she was played by Danielle Tabor, whose surname was misidentified as "Taylor" in the first two instances. In Goblet of Fire, she was portrayed by Tiana Benjamin. Benjamin had been scheduled to reprise the role in Order of the Phoenix, but was forced to withdraw due to commitments to EastEnders. The character does appear in the related video game, with Benjamin providing the voice.

Lee Jordan

Template:HP Character Lee Jordan is a Gryffindor student two years ahead of Harry, and a close friend of Fred and George Weasley; he is as witty and fun-loving as the twins and a fellow Quidditch enthusiast. Lee wears his hair in dreadlocks and serves as Hogwarts' Quidditch commentator. Harry first encounters him at King's Cross as he attempts to smuggle a giant tarantula onto the train. Though Lee is a lively and astute commentator, he has a tendency to discuss off-topic subjects such as Harry's Firebolt or his own attraction to Angelina Johnson, his commentary is clearly biased in favor of his house, and his jovial tone often turns sarcastic whenever he talks about the Slytherin team. Lee also habitually swears in frustration whenever an opponent commits an infraction or scores against Gryffindor, often to the point where a frustrated McGonagall attempts (unsuccessfully) to take away his megaphone.

In his seventh year, Lee joins Dumbledore's Army, helps Fred and George with testing their merchandise on unsuspecting first years, and becomes the only known victim, besides Harry, of Dolores Umbridge's detention quill after he vocally objects to her ban of Exploding Snap games during classes. His commentary suffers from lack of enthusiasm after the twins unexpectedly leave Hogwarts in the wake of the student uprising against Umbridge, during which he does his part by levitating two nifflers through her office window. Following Lee's departure at the end of the term, Zacharias Smith and Luna Lovegood take turns replacing him the next year as match commentator.

Lee was not mentioned in Half-Blood Prince, but returned in Deathly Hallows as an undercover pirate radio anchor, broadcasting under the pseudonym of "River" on an anti-Ministry of Magic station entitled Potterwatch, which supported the activities of Harry and the Order of the Phoenix. He and George successfully take down Death Eater Yaxley in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Lee appeared in the first two movies, and was played by Luke Youngblood.

Ernie Macmillan

Template:HP character Ernie Macmillan is a Hufflepuff student in Harry's year. He is described as "a stout boy," and is descended from nine consecutive generations of pure-blood witches and wizards. His series debut is in Chamber of Secrets, in which Ernie believes that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin after he is witnessed speaking Parseltongue to a snake threatening housemate Justin Finch-Fletchley, who is later Petrified. However, after Hermione meets the same fate, Ernie realizes his mistake and apologizes to Harry. He wears a "Support Cedric Diggory" badge and again gives Harry the cold shoulder in Goblet of Fire after Harry enters the Triwizard Tournament in which Ernie believes is an apparent attempt at further glory, but they mend fences after the First Task.

Ernie becomes a Hufflepuff prefect in his fifth year, and joins Dumbledore's Army. Harry perceives Ernie as somewhat pompous, but they usually get along very well. For his part, Ernie seems to have learned that Harry can be trusted, as he is among the few Hogwarts students who side with Harry's and Albus Dumbledore's claims that Voldemort has returned, even going so far as to make an openly public declaration of support on Harry's behalf. He deals with the pressure of O.W.L. exams by studying as much as eight to ten hours a day and then boasting about it, while developing the irritating habit of interrogating others about their study habits. His hard work and determination pay off, as he shows up in Horace Slughorn's Advanced Potions class in his sixth year. During the climax of Half-Blood Prince, he emerges from the Hufflepuff common room as Malfoy, Severus Snape, and Harry run down a corridor during the Death Eaters' raid of Hogwarts; he attempts to ask Harry what was going on, but Harry blows by him with no response.

In Deathly Hallows, Ernie joins the D.A. in the final battle against the Death Eaters and Voldemort. When McGonagall addresses the students in the Great Hall about Voldemort demanding Harry's surrender and the urgent need to evacuate, Ernie shouts out from the Hufflepuff table, "And what if we want to stay and fight?" He, Luna and Seamus Finnigan conjure their Patronuses (Ernie's takes the shape of a boar) in their attempt to aid Harry in his battle against the Dementors.

Louis Doyle played Ernie in the film version of Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire,.

Cormac McLaggen

Template:HP Character Cormac McLaggen is a Gryffindor student one year above Harry. He is introduced for the first time during the train journey to Hogwarts in Half-Blood Prince as a member of Horace Slughorn's Slug Club, due to his uncle's close ties with the Ministry of Magic. Aggressive and arrogant from the outset, he plays roles both in the fortunes of the Gryffindor Quidditch team and in Hermione's love life. McLaggen tries out for the position of Keeper when Harry becomes captain, having missed the tryouts the previous year due to his eating a pound of Doxy eggs on a bet. However, Hermione jinxes him with the Confundus Charm, causing him to miss his last save and thus helping Ron retain his spot on the team. McLaggen does not take his loss well, accusing Ginny of favoritism by giving Ron easy shots to block. McLaggen fills in during Gryffindor's match against Hufflepuff as Keeper when Ron is unable to play due to poisoning, but his debut is disastrous, as he orders the team about instead of focusing on his own position, knocks Harry unconscious with a Beater's bat, and contributes to Gryffindor's lopsided 320-60 loss, thus earning him universal dislike among his housemates and Harry and the team in particular, much to Ron's delight.

McLaggen also briefly becomes a pawn in the escalating tensions between Ron and Hermione, as he is Hermione's date at Slughorn's Christmas party in retaliation for Ron's relationship with Lavender Brown. The plan backfires when she becomes offended by McLaggen's boorish behavior, and she leaves him stranded under the mistletoe and avoids him for the remainder of the party.

Along with Romilda Vane, McLaggen is shown as an unsympathetic (or unlikeable) Gryffindor character. His Gryffindorian bravery is both a strength and a flaw: he is foolhardy and proud, bordering on arrogant. Rowling introduced him to represent the recurring themes of good and evil, and how blurry the line often becomes (he is juxtaposed against Slughorn, the first known "good" Slytherin.) Rowling said she named the character McLaggen simply because she liked the surname.

Theodore Nott

Template:HP character Theodore Nott is a "weedy-looking boy" in Slytherin House, but is not friends with Malfoy and other Slytherin students. His father, Nott, is a very elderly widower and Death Eater. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Theodore can be seen in the library with Crabbe, Goyle and Malfoy, looking very angry at Harry as he walked by because Harry had named all of their fathers as Death Eaters in The Quibbler. According to Rowling, Theodore is "a clever loner who does not feel the need to join any gang, including Malfoy's." Nott, though, was seen sitting and talking with Malfoy in Order of the Phoenix and sniggering with him in Horace Slughorn's Potions class in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Nott is the only known Slytherin of Harry Potter's year who can see Thestrals, meaning he has seen someone die. His father and Slughorn are old friends, and while on the Hogwarts Express, Slughorn waylays Blaise Zabini and inquires after Theodore and Mr. Nott. Zabini answers that Nott Sr. is a Death Eater currently imprisoned in Azkaban for breaking into the Department of Mysteries the previous June. Slughorn, not wanting any association with Death Eaters, is not pleased and thus invites Blaise instead of Nott into his "Slug Club."

A subplot that Rowling eventually cut from the series storyline was to have featured Malfoy and Nott talking in the garden of Malfoy Manor, which would have been one of the few times that Malfoy would be seen conversing with someone he considered an equal, as Rowling has said that Nott is just as pureblooded as Malfoy and somewhat cleverer.

Pansy Parkinson

Template:HP character Pansy Parkinson is a Slytherin student who is described as "pug-faced" and frequently seen with an unnamed "gang of Slytherin girls," acting as leader or at least as spokeswoman of them. She is also Draco Malfoy's female counterpart and apparent love interest. She is first mentioned in the Sorting in Philosopher's Stone, and makes her first appearance in Madam Hooch's flying class, during which she teases Parvati Patil for defending Neville Longbottom after Draco Malfoy steals Longbottom's Remembrall. In Prisoner of Azkaban, she cries and follows Malfoy to the hospital wing after he is attacked by Buckbeak, and continues to fawn over him despite his deliberate exaggeration of the extent of his injury. They attended the Yule Ball together in Goblet of Fire, and on the train ride to Hogwarts in Half-Blood Prince, she is seen stroking Malfoy's hair while his head lay in her lap, and also waits for him to take her hand before disembarking.

Pansy has a moderately increased role during her fifth year. She is made a Slytherin prefect along with Malfoy, and later joins Dolores Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad. When Dumbledore's Army flees the Room of Requirement following Dobby's revelation of an informant, Pansy searches the girls' bathrooms for escaped members and seizes Hermione's list of names as evidence. However, the Inquisitorial Squad are jinxed in the midst of a student rebellion following Fred and George Weasley's departure from Hogwarts; she is hospitalized and misses a day's worth of lessons after sprouting a pair of antlers.

Throughout the series, Pansy regularly mocks Harry and his companions. She gives false information on Harry, Hermione, and Hagrid to Rita Skeeter, and openly voices criticisms of Hagrid to Umbridge about the displeasure of his Care of Magical Creatures class and the difficulty of understanding his voice. She and other Slytherins also taunt the Gryffindor Quidditch players from the stands during a morning practice, notably teasing Angelina Johnson about her braided hair ("Why would anyone want to look like they've got worms coming out of their head?"). During a Gryffindor-Slytherin match, which is also Ron's debut as the new Gryffindor Keeper, she conducts the Slytherin students as they sing the demeaning "Weasley is our King." She may have a softer side shown in Goblet of Fire, during Care for Magical Creatures class when the girls go near the unicorn foals, Pansy fails to suppress her fondness of them, though this may have been a typical feminine trait.

Near the conclusion of Deathly Hallows, when Voldemort demands Harry's surrender in order to prevent the Death Eaters from attacking Hogwarts, Pansy urges Minerva McGonagall to comply, and the Gryffindors, Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs collectively reply by standing up and flashing their wands at her. She eventually evacuates with the other Slytherins rather than staying to fight.

Padma Patil

Template:HP character Padma Patil is a Ravenclaw student in Harry's year, and the identical twin sister of Gryffindor student Parvati Patil. While both sisters are Sorted in Philosopher's Stone, Padma is not mentioned again in the series until Goblet of Fire. Padma attends the Yule Ball with Ron, at the urging of Parvati (Harry's date) when Harry begs her to find a date for Ron. Padma, however, is less than enthusiastic at having Ron for a partner, since he refuses to dance with her and instead spends the evening stewing in jealousy over Hermione's date with Viktor Krum. Padma and Parvati both eventually abandon their disinterested dates and dance with some Beauxbatons boys. In Order of the Phoenix, Padma becomes a Ravenclaw prefect, and joins Dumbledore's Army along with her sister. The twins are taken home by their parents after Dumbledore's death and subsequent funeral at the conclusion of Half-Blood Prince, but in Deathly Hallows, they return to Hogwarts to take part in the final battle against Voldemort and the Death Eaters.

The Patils' names and appearance in the films imply that they are of Indian descent. Patil is a common Marathi surname in the state of Maharashtra. In Sanskrit, Padma means "lotus," a symbol of divinity and purity because of its nature and birth in dirty mud water. Rowling originally intended for the twins' first names to begin with Ma, and on her classlist from Harry Potter and Me, their last name was spelled as Patel.

Padma is played by Afshan Azad in the film versions of Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. In both movies, the Patils are Gryffindor housemates, and are also portrayed as fraternal twins.

==Parvati Patil== Template:HP character Parvati Patil is a Gryffindor student in Harry's year and the identical twin sister of Ravenclaw student Padma Patil. Her best friend is Lavender Brown; they seem to enjoy the same classes, particularly Divination, and share many common interests. In Philosopher's Stone, she sticks up for the hapless Neville after Malfoy mocks him and steals his Remembrall during Madam Hooch's flying class. Parvati attends the Yule Ball with Harry in Goblet of Fire, but her evening is a disappointment as Harry spends the evening jealously preoccupied with Cho Chang's date with Cedric Diggory and deigns to dance with her; she eventually abandons him to dance with some Beauxbatons boys.

In her fifth year, Parvati joins Dumbledore's Army along with her sister. During one meeting, she turns a table to dust with a successful Reductor Curse. In Half-Blood Prince, the twins are almost removed from Hogwarts by their parents, but ultimately do return home after Dumbledore's death. Parvati duels with Death Eater Travers during the final battle of Hogwarts, and attacks Antonin Dolohov with a Body-Bind Curse after he attempts to retaliate at Dean for stunning another Death Eater.

Sitara Shah briefly appeared as Parvati in the film version of Prisoner of Azkaban. Shefali Chowdhury assumed the role for Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. In the latter two pictures, the Patils are portrayed as Gryffindor housemates and fraternal twins.

Zacharias Smith

Template:HP character Zacharias Smith is a Chaser for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. He makes his first appearance in the debut meeting of Dumbledore's Army in Order of the Phoenix, but was the most skeptical of Harry's claims. Hermione later admits to Harry and Ron that she only invited him because he overheard her talking with Ernie and Hannah about joining, and that she doesn't like him much either. Later in the year, however, Zacharias was as eager for more D.A. lessons as the other members. Fred and George Weasley never take a liking to him since the first meeting, and they jinx him behind his back at the first official D.A. meeting as he attempts to disarm Anthony Goldstein.

In Half-Blood Prince, Zacharias is first mentioned as being on the receiving end of one of Ginny Weasley's famed Bat-Bogey Hexes. He also splits Quidditch match commentary duties with Luna Lovegood during the term; however, his jeering at the Gryffindor team is highly unpopular, to the point where Ginny deliberately crashes into the announcer's pit following Gryffindor's win over Slytherin. During Hufflepuff's match against Gryffindor, Zacharias is described as suffering from "Loser's Lurgy" by Luna, much to McGonagall's consternation. He is not seen again until the day after Dumbledore's death, when Zacharias was escorted from Hogwarts by his haughty-looking father before the funeral, implying that unlike Ernie, he was not supportive of Dumbledore and his policies. In Deathly Hallows, Zacharias attends Hogwarts under Snape's rule as headmaster. Before the final battle of Hogwarts, he is seen pushing past younger students for the evacuation point rather than staying to fight alongside the D.A.

His first name is of Hebrew origin, a feature he shares with the other Smith seen in the series, Hepzibah Smith. It is possible that they are related, though it is undetermined. Zacharias is generally assumed to be in Harry's year, due to a "Smith" appearing on Rowling's pre-canon classlist that she created prior to the completion of Philosopher's Stone, but it was never confirmed in the series.

Nick Shirm briefly appeared as Zacharias in the film version of Order of the Phoenix, but was not mentioned by name; he was identified as "Somewhat Doubtful Boy" in the closing credits.

Alicia Spinnet

Template:HP Character Alicia Spinnet first joins the Gryffindor reserve squad and moves up to the first team the next season (Harry's first year). Alicia is most often the Chaser who takes penalties when the other team commits an infraction. In her seventh year, she is jinxed by Slytherin Keeper Miles Bletchley in the library prior to the Gryffindor-Slytherin match, causing her eyebrows to grow long enough that they obstruct her face; Professor Snape deliberately ignores the accounts of fourteen eyewitnesses, instead passing the incident off as her errant attempt at a Hair-Thickening Charm. Alicia joined the Dumbledore's Army in her final year at school. Alicia is not seen in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but returns in the final book to defend the school in the Battle of Hogwarts.

She was played by Leilah Sutherland in the film version of Philosopher's Stone, and Rochelle Douglas in Chamber of Secrets.

Dean Thomas

Template:HP Character Dean Thomas is a Gryffindor student in Harry's year who is described as "a Black boy even taller than Ron". He is best friends with Seamus Finnigan and a football fan, which leads to his confusion about the complexities of Quidditch; during the Gryffindor-Slytherin match in Philosopher's Stone, Dean yells at Madam Hooch to send Marcus Flint off after he intentionally collides with Harry. Dean is also an avid West Ham United supporter; he puts up a poster above his bed (Ron initially can't understand why the players therein are immobile) and wears pajamas in the team colors.

Dean's mother is a Muggle and his father was a wizard, but he kept his blood status a secret and abandoned his family when Dean was very young; it is not until Deathly Hallows that Dean first makes mention of this. Unbeknownst to Dean, however, his father left as a measure of protection for his family against the Death Eaters, and was slain when he refused to join them. Dean was subsequently raised by his mother and stepfather, and has several half-brothers and sisters.

In Goblet of Fire, Dean expresses his surprise to Harry and Ron about their Yule Ball dates with the Patil twins ("'the best-looking girls in our year"). He joins Dumbledore's Army in his fifth year, and also believes Harry and Dumbledore when they insist that Voldemort has returned, but when Harry and Seamus engage in a heated row on the first night of the new term over the Daily Prophet's allegations that Harry had merely fabricated the story, Dean refuses to take sides. At the end of the term, he begins dating Ginny Weasley, and becomes a temporary substitute Chaser on the Gryffindor Quidditch team in Half-Blood Prince after incumbent Katie Bell is hospitalized in St. Mungo's. The relationship eventually ends after Ginny becomes annoyed with Dean when he tries to help her through the portrait hole, which leads to an argument. Harry, though jealous of the relationship from the start, is accidentally responsible for the split: under the Invisibility Cloak and the influence of Felix Felicis, Harry accidentally brushes Ginny as she and Dean pass through the portrait hole.

Dean's role is expanded in Deathly Hallows. Unable to prove that he is actually a half-blood, he does not return to Hogwarts and goes on the run from the Ministry, who are rounding up Muggle-borns upon Voldemort's orders. Harry, Ron, and Hermione first come across him during their mission as they eavesdrop on his conversation with fellow runaways Ted Tonks, Dirk Cresswell, and the goblins Griphook and Gornuk. The group is soon viciously attacked by Snatchers; Dean and Griphook are the lone survivors but are captured along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione and taken to Malfoy Manor. They are all bravely rescued by Dobby, who transports them to Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's isolated cottage for protection before dying from wounds suffered during the rescue attempt. The stay in the cottage appears to draw Dean and fellow inhabitant Luna Lovegood closer together; Dean pointedly takes Luna by the hand before heading out to prepare for the final battle of Hogwarts against Voldemort and the Death Eaters. He uses a Stunning Spell on an unnamed Death Eater, and when Antonin Dolohov attempts to retaliate against Dean, Parvati attacks Dolohov with a Body-Bind Curse.

Dean's original first name was Gary prior to the completion of Philosopher's Stone. His description and Sorting are included only in the American version of the novel; Rowling explained on her website that Christopher Little, her UK editor, felt the chapter was already too long and that any extraneous detail thus had to be removed.

Alfred Enoch has played Dean in all of the Harry Potter movies to date.

Romilda Vane

Template:HP character Romilda Vane is a Gryffindor student two years younger than Harry. She has long black hair, dark eyes and a prominent chin, and makes her lone series appearance in Half-Blood Prince. Along with Cormac McLaggen, she is one of the few unpleasant Gryffindors in the series: she harbors a crush on Harry but is extremely disappointed when the feeling is not mutual, and unlike Harry's previous adorers, such as Ginny and the Creevey brothers, whose hero-worshipping was harmless and often amusing, Romilda's pursuits of Harry border on obsessive. She introduces herself to Harry on the Hogwarts Express and invites him to join her and her friends, but not without regarding Neville and Luna (who were sharing his compartment) with utmost disdain. Harry turns down her invitation, prompting Luna to comment, "She expects you to have cooler friends than us."

Later in the term, she attempts to trick Harry into taking a love potion by giving him a box of spiked chocolates, but Harry doesn't eat them after being warned in advance by Hermione. However, Ron consumes several of the chocolates several months later and is affected by the potion, forcing Harry to take him to Professor Slughorn for an antidote, which in turn leads to Ron's accidental poisoning and a stint in the hospital wing. Following Gryffindor's victory over Ravenclaw in the Quidditch Cup final, Romilda takes umbrage with Harry kissing Ginny, whom he starts dating shortly thereafter. Ginny also tells Harry that Romilda wants to know if he has a hippogriff tattooed on his chest, and jokingly replies that it is a Hungarian Horntail, claiming it to be "much more macho" than a hippogriff.

Oliver Wood

Template:HP Character Oliver Wood (born c. 1976) is Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in the first three novels. Wood, described as "burly," is a talented and keen player and a born leader as captain, but also tends to act as a taskmaster due to his obsession with the game; he never cancels practices, poor weather conditions notwithstanding, and holds training sessions in early morning hours. In his seventh year, before the Quidditch Cup final, he constantly harangues Harry to catch the Golden Snitch only when Gryffindor is fifty points ahead of Slytherin during the match. His longtime rival is Slytherin captain Marcus Flint; they are well-known for trying to break each other's fingers during their pre-match handshakes. Oliver appears briefly in Goblet of Fire, when he excitedly introduces Harry to his parents at the Quidditch World Cup and announces that he joined the Puddlemere United reserve team.

Although Wood is not seen again until the seventh book, his tenacity is not soon forgotten. In Order of the Phoenix, when Angelina Johnson assumes the team captaincy with equal fervor, Harry remarks to Ron, "I think we'd better check with Puddlemere United to see if Oliver Wood's been killed during a training session, because she seems to be channeling his spirit." When Ron is poisoned in Half-Blood Prince, Fred Weasley replies to speculation that Gryffindor players were being specifically targeted, "Wood would have done the Slytherins if he could get away with it." He is one of many Hogwarts students, past and present, who takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows, and is among the survivors; Harry sees him assisting Neville Longbottom in carrying the body of Colin Creevey.

Oliver appeared in the first two films, and was played by Sean Biggerstaff.

Blaise Zabini

Template:HP character Blaise Zabini is a Slytherin student in Harry's year. He is described as a tall and handsome black boy, with high cheekbones and long, slanting eyes. He has a famously beautiful mother who has been widowed seven times. Each of her husbands died mysteriously, and after each death she inherited a large amount of gold. It is not known which of the seven husbands, if any, was Blaise's biological father. Blaise is described as extremely vain, and like other Slytherins in his year, has strong prejudices against Muggle-borns and blood traitors.

While his name was mentioned during the Sorting ceremony in Philosopher's Stone, Blaise finally makes his first and only proper appearance in Half-Blood Prince: he is one of the students invited to lunch on the Hogwarts Express by Professor Slughorn, who is sizing up potential new members for his "Slug Club." After this initial meeting, Pansy Parkinson accuses him of finding Ginny Weasley attractive; he does not deny this outright, but says that he wouldn't "touch a filthy little blood traitor" no matter how she looked. Blaise apparently passes Slughorn's test, as he continues to receive invitations to Slughorn's parties once the school year begins. He does not seem to have a high opinion of his fellow members, if his comments to Malfoy after the first meeting on the train are any indication. In spite of this, he continues to accept the invitations.

Since the only information about Blaise that existed prior to the release of Half-Blood Prince was merely his being a Slytherin in Harry's year, his gender and nature were hotly debated by fans. Rowling confirmed in late 2004 that the character was male and that he would be included in future books. However, Blaise did not appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

He will be played by Louis Cordice in the film version of Half-Blood Prince.

Others

• Penelope Clearwater: Ravenclaw prefect and Percy Weasley's girlfriend. She was initially believed to be a Muggle-born after she was Petrified along with Hermione Granger by the reflect of the basilisk's eyes, but a scene in Deathly Hallows, in which Hermione identifies herself as "Penelope Clearwater" and a half-blood when interrogated by a group of Snatchers hunting for Muggle-borns, dispels this notion as Penelope's name was not on their list.
• Roger Davies: Captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. He escorts Fleur Delacour to the Yule Ball.
• Marcus Flint: Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team during Harry's first three years at Hogwarts, described in Philosopher's Stone as "looking like he has some troll blood in him,". He is a fifth-year student in Harry's first year; however, in older copies of the first book, he was a sixth year, leading to confusion regarding his appearance in the third book. Rowling explained this by saying that he failed his exams and had to repeat a year.
• Eloise Midgen (sometimes spelled Eloise Midgeon) is generally assumed to be in Harry Potter's year, although her House is unclear. Eloise suffers from severe acne, used as a running gag in the series. During Half-Blood Prince, her father comes to school in October to collect her.
• Montague: Chaser on the Slytherin Quidditch team, replacing Marcus Flint as team captain during Harry's fifth year. He becomes part of Dolores Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad, but is shoved headfirst into the Vanishing Cabinet by Fred and George Weasley as he attempts to dock fifty points from Gryffindor. He spends several weeks stuck in limbo in the cabinet and barely manages to escape by Apparating out. He eventually turns up jammed into a toilet.
• Demelza Robins: joins the Gryffindor Quidditch team in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. According to Harry, she is an excellent Chaser, and exceptionally good at dodging Bludgers. Rowling named the character as an homage to Demelza House, a Kent children's hospice which Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has been known to support
• Andrew Kirke and Jack Sloper replace Fred and George Weasley as Gryffindor Beaters after the twins are banned by Dolores Umbridge for their part in a violent postmatch fight with Draco Malfoy in Order of the Phoenix. Neither are held in high regard by their teammates due to their incompetence on the pitch, and in Half-Blood Prince, they are replaced by Jimmy Peakes and Ritchie Coote.
