Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is a remake of the role-playing video game Baldur's Gate and its expansion Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast. Originally the game was published by Interplay Entertainment and developed by BioWare, two games had been made in the series as well as a spin-off series. After the third game in the series was cancelled, Interplay had lost the license. The remake is set to be made by Overhaul Games, a division of Beamdog, Overhaul is made up of many ex-employees of BioWare and the game is to be published by Atari, marking their entrance into the series.

The enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate is set for release in the Summer of 2012 and is to be packaged with its expansion pack all in one game. The enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate II is also set for release in the Summer of 2012 but is to be released after the enhanced edition of the original Baldur's Gate. Overhaul games have remained adamant that the games are more than just mere remakes of classic RPG's and that there are many differences in the game. [2]

Gameplay

The gameplay has also been changed from the original game, though on the PC it remains mostly unchanged. One of the major differences is the support of multiplayer with the addition of new abilities. Cross-platform multiplayer between Windows and iPad will be available, with Mac OS X being available as well.[3] While major changes have not been added to the PC version of the game, though higher resolutions will be available in addition to different viewing modes for the gameplay. The iPad version, however, has been described by game developer Cameron Tofer as a radical departure. The iPad version allows for zooming in and out via multitouch gestures which will allow for larger text. The iPad version allows users to swipe between screens instead of clicking on tabs. [4]

Plot

Though the plot of the game will stay the same, small changes will be made in specific quests and missions to make the game play out better.[citation needed] The story itself will also be slightly altered with a new party member being available as well as an entire new adventure. Though details on the new party member and adventurer have not been divulged. However, Cameron Tofer, a game developer, had revealed that there would be more than one new adventure and that there would multiple sidequests that would tie unfinished stories together. The original expansion pack for Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast will be packaged with the game.

Baldur's Gate II

Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition is also being developed by Overhaul Games. It is an overhaul or remake of the second game in the Baldur's Gate series, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, the game is meant to follow up on Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Like the enhanced edition of its predecessor, the enhanced edition of Shadows of Amn will have its expansion pack, Baldur's Gate: The Throne of Bhaal bundled with it as well. The game will be available on PC and the iPad. [5]

Development

Beamdog had negotiated to get a contract for the first two Baldur's Gate games from Atari and Wizards of the Coast for approximately twelve months before they were allowed to start working on the Enhanced Editions. Upon development, the decision was made to make the game available on the iPad, of which it is available on all three generations. [6] On March 15, 2012 remake of Baldur's Gate was announced alongside a remake of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is slated for the summer of 2012[1] for both the PC and IPad. [7] For assistance on the game, Overhaul had reached out to the modding community of the original Baldur's Gate games. Overhaul Games has also said that they hope to platform the game to other platforms after finishing the initial game. ref>http://kotaku.com/5896538/they-hope-baldurs-gate-will-revive-the-classic-rpg</ref> It was announced on March 29 2012 that the game would also be available for Mac OS X. [8]

Sequels

Overhaul Games has revealed their intent to make Baldur's Gate 3 following their completion on both enhanced editions. Overhaul Games have described Baldur's Gate 3 as their "Long-Term Goal".

We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched. So currently there is no such project but that’s the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for BG 1 and 2 just make sense before there’s any Baldur’s Gate 3.

— Cameron Tofer

[citation needed]

If Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is successful, then Overhaul Games and Beamdog have stated that they would wish to work on a remake of Planescape: Torment.[citation needed]
