Music
Initially two separate rock bands, Ahmed Ali Butt's Entity and Fawad Khan's Paradigm were both active in the Lahore music scene since 1994 and 2000, respectively. During the early 2000s, the two bands collaborated with each other on the title track for Khan's and Butt's popular television sitcom, Jutt and Bond, when the show's director suggested that they do the title song together. Led by Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, the lead guitarist of Paradigm, the two bands collaborated and recorded the title song, "Hamein Aazma", which played at the end of the show. In early 2002, advertisements for Pepsi's Battle of the Bands began to air on television, calling upon entries from aspiring Pakistani bands. Since independent compilations and releases on record were lacking on both sides of the band, they decided to send in "Hamein Aazma" as a collaborative effort, under the name of Entity Paradigm. It was during this time that Entity Paradigm (EP) officially came into existence, with Fawad Khan as the band's lead vocals.

TV debut and early years (2000–2011)
Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Kay Liye. The film opened to good responses and was the highest-grossing Pakistani film in 2007.<ref>{{cite travel and adventure drama series Satrangi and in the drama Dil Deke Jayen Ge.<ref name="dramas">{{cite Khan essayed the role of Adil, a rich spoilt playboy who has a careless attitude. Subsequently, he went on to appear in two telefilms, Kal (2009) which aired on Geo TV and Aaj Kuch Na Kaho (2010) which aired on Hum TV.<ref name="love">{{cite web|url=http://entertainment.com.pk/fawad-khan/|title=Fawad Khan by Khan's good friend Ahmed Ali Butt and Khan portrayed the role of Rehan, the husband of the female protagonist, played by Fatima Ahmed, who is the archetypal workaholic and conservative middle-class man who is oblivious to his wife's suffering. The film was not greatly appreciated and was mainly criticized for its hasty ending, for the fact that the film had too much going on, and that it wasn't able to meaningfully concentrate in any of the departments that the story focused on. Khan, however, was praised for his convincing portrayal of a sourpuss husband and his performance was seen as the only redeeming factor in the film. Later in 2010, Fawad Khan landed the lead role of Hassan opposite actress Sanam Baloch in Hum TV's historical drama Dastaan directed by Haissam Hussain. The drama went on to become a great success with audiences and Khan bagged Fawad Afzal Khan (born November 29, 1981) is a Pakistani singer, model and actor. He has established a successful career in Pakistani TV cinema. In 2014, Khan made his Bollywood debut, with the release of Khoobsurat.

Early life

Fawad Afzal Khan was born on November 29, 1981 in Karachi, Pakistan to a Punjabi family.[1][2][3] Due to the nature of his father's job, Khan's childhood was spent traveling place to place. He lived in Athens, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Manchester during his youth.[1][2] When his father retired, Khan returned to Pakistan when he was 13 years old, now living in Lahore.[1][2] Khan did his A-levels from LGS Lahore and went on to complete his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (FAST-NU) in Lahore.[2][4] At the young age of 13, Khan began his modeling career.[5] Fawad Khan made his acting debut onstage in a high school play, Manaal, which was directed by a friend of his, Manal Butt.[2][5][6] The play caught the attention of director Shahzad Anjum, who helped Khan enter into the media world.[2][6]

Career

Music

Initially two separate rock bands, Ahmed Ali Butt's Entity and Fawad Khan's Paradigm were both active in the Lahore music scene since 1994 and 2000, respectively.[7][8] During the early 2000s, the two bands collaborated with each other on the title track for Khan's and Butt's popular television sitcom, Jutt and Bond, when the show's director suggested that they do the title song together.[7][8] Led by Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan, the lead guitarist of Paradigm, the two bands collaborated and recorded the title song, "Hamein Aazma", which played at the end of the show.[7][9] In early 2002, advertisements for Pepsi's Battle of the Bands began to air on television, calling upon entries from aspiring Pakistani bands. Since independent compilations and releases on record were lacking on both sides of the band, they decided to send in "Hamein Aazma" as a collaborative effort, under the name of Entity Paradigm.[7] It was during this time that Entity Paradigm (EP) officially came into existence, with Fawad Khan as the band's lead vocals.[7][10]

Entity Paradigm's debut album, Irtiqa, released in October 2003 and received wide critical appreciation, especially the popular romantic track Rahguzar.[7][5] Fawad Khan came up with the songs Rahguzar, Waqt, Kahan Hai Tu and Hamein Aazma.[11] On January 9, 2007, the band disbanded due to various band members pursuing different projects.[7] The band briefly reunited in 2010 to perform Bolo Bolo in the third season of the popular TV music show Coke Studio.[2] In the same year, the band also released their patriotic single Shor Macha, written by Khan, Ahmed and Salman, and recorded at The Albert Studios.[2][12]

Acting

TV debut and early years (2000–2011)

In 2000, at the age of 19, Fawad Khan made his television debut on the sitcom Jutt and Bond, where he played a bumbling spy role with the sitcom.[3] After his debut, his focus was still mostly on his music career with his band Entity Paradigm until 2007 when he was casted for the role of Sarmad in Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Kay Liye.[2] The film opened to good responses and was the highest-grossing Pakistani film in 2007.[13] After the success of the film, Khan changed his focus from music to acting resulting in the disbandment of Entity Paradigm in 2007.[14] In 2008, the actor stepped into full-time drama serials, appearing in Anjum Shehzad's travel and adventure drama series Satrangi and in the drama Dil Deke Jayen Ge.[2][15][16][17] In Satrangi, Khan played the role of Behzaad an engineering student who hires a mini-bus and takes his six friend on a trip around the country.[2][16] In addition to starring in the drama, he also wrote and sang the original soundtrack of the drama.[2] In Dil Deke Jayen Ge, Khan portrayed the role of Arsalan and the drama's cast included Saba Qamar, Sunita Marshal, and Vaneeza.[16] In 2009, he appeared in Haissam Hussain's drama serial, Jeevan Ki Rahon Mein, which revolved around the lives of three close friends Adil, Khayyam, and Aman.[16][18] Khan essayed the role of Adil, a rich spoilt playboy who has a careless attitude.[16][18] Subsequently, he went on to appear in two telefilms, Kal (2009) which aired on Geo TV and Aaj Kuch Na Kaho (2010) which aired on Hum TV.[15] Made for Pakistan's Independence Day, Kal was about five college students selected to write on the topic of “Mera Pakistan" with Khan playing the role of Zaheer.[15][19][20] Aaj Kuch Na Kaho was the fifth film showcased in the Hum Telefilm Festival 2010 and revolved around the concept of love and marriage.[21] The telefilm was directed by Khan's good friend Ahmed Ali Butt and Khan portrayed the role of Rehan, the husband of the female protagonist, played by Fatima Ahmed, who is the archetypal workaholic and conservative middle-class man who is oblivious to his wife's suffering.[21] The film was not greatly appreciated and was mainly criticized for its hasty ending, for the fact that the film had too much going on, and that it wasn't able to meaningfully concentrate in any of the departments that the story focused on.[21] Khan, however, was praised for his convincing portrayal of a sourpuss husband and his performance was seen as the only redeeming factor in the film.[21] Later in 2010, Fawad Khan landed the lead role of Hassan opposite actress Sanam Baloch in Hum TV's historical drama Dastaan directed by Haissam Hussain.[2] The drama went on to become a great success with audiences and Khan bagged Best TV actor award for his portrayal of Hassan at the 2nd Annual Pakistan Media Awards. In 2011, Fawad Khan was seen in two TV dramas, Akbari Asghari and Kuch Pyar Ka Pagalpan, where he played the roles of Asghar and Mujtaba, respectively.

Humsafar and beyond (2011–present)

In 2011, Fawad Khan became a household name after playing Ashar Hussain, a wealthy man who marries his middle-class cousin, in the critical and commercial hit drama Humsafar.[5] Humsafar was an adaptation of Farhat Ishtiaq's novel of the same name and consisted of Mahira Khan, Atiqa Odho and Naveen Waqar.[2] Humsafar is seen as one of the most popular Pakistani dramas of recent times and as a revival of the Pakistani cinema.[22] Humsafar received Pakistan’s highest rating ever at 9.75.[5] Khan was greatly praised for his performance and he went on to win the Best TV Actor (Satellite) award for his portrayal of Ashar Hussain at the 12th Lux Style Awards.[5][6][23][24] His on-screen chemistry with co-star Mahira Khan was greatly praised by critics and appreciated by the audience.[5][25][26] The couple went on to win the Best Onscreen Couple award at the 1st Hum Awards.[24][25][27] After Humsafar, Fawad Khan next appeared on the drama Ashk as Rohail Hayat. Ashk was one of the most highly awaited drama serials of its season and expectations were high as it not only had a star studded cast of Fawad Khan, Mehreen Raheel, Neelam Munir, and Resham, but it was also directed by Sarmad Sultan Khoosat who was the director of the hit drama serial Humsafar.[28] The drama, however, did not meet expectations as the shortfall in terms of the story and the script left most of the episodes banal and boring.[28] The chemistry between Rohail, played by Khan and Zaibunnisa, portrayed by Neelam Munir was appreciated by critics and their scenes were the highlight of almost every episode.[28]

Khan's next big role came in 2013 when he portrayed Zaroon Junaid in the popular drama Zindagi Gulzar Hai. The drama was a huge hit and it won the award for the Best Drama of 2013 at the 2nd Pakistan Media Awards and the 2nd Hum Awards.[29][30] For his role, Fawad Khan won the Best Actor (Popular) award at the 2nd Hum Awards and the Best Drama Actor at the 2nd Pakistan Media Awards.[29][30][31][32] His chemistry with Sanam Saeed was also appreciated and the couple won the Best Onscreen Couple award and the Best Onscreen Couple (Popular) award at the 2nd Hum Awards.[29][30][32] The series also aired in India on the channel Zindagi from June 13, 2014 to July 18, 2014.[33] The drama was widely popular in India resulting in it being rebroadcast from August 2014 to September 2014.[34][35] The popularity of the show and of Khan's character Zaroon made Fawad Khan well known to the Indian audiences and his performance was listed as one of the reasons why Zindagi Gulzar Hai was a smashing hit in India.[34][35] In 2013, Khan was also seen in a TV movie, Behadd as Jamal Ahmed, and in the drama, Numm as Wali Bakht Khan. Later that year, he starred as the title role in the Pakistani telefilm Armaan, a remake of the 1966 film of the same name.[15] The film aimed to reconnect the audience with Pakistani cinema, culture and society and also to revive some Lollywood classic hits and bring them to life for the young generation.[36] Fawad Khan was chosen for the role due to his similarity to Waheed Murad, the actor who played Armaan in the original 1966 film, in terms of looks and style.[36] Khan and Aamina Sheikh, his co-star in the film, won the Tarang Housefull Award for Best On Screen Couple.[37]

Bollywood

In 2014, Fawad Khan made his debut in Bollywood with the release of his film Khoobsurat opposite Sonam Kapoor.[37][38] A remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1980 hit of the same name starring Rekha and Rakesh Roshan, the film revolves around Sonam Kapoor's character, Dr. Mili Chakravarty, who is a middle class physiotherapist from Delhi.[39] Khan plays Yuvraj Vikram Singh Rathore, Mili's love interest and the son of her patient.[39] While the reviews of the film varied from positive to mediocre, Fawad Khan's performance was praised by critics and seen as one of the highlights of the film.[40][41][42] Ritika Handoo of Zee News stated that "We all knew from 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai' that he can act well, but in this film he shines above everyone else and how!", she also notes that "Fawad fits into the shoes of the royal Prince Vikram with such ease, that it becomes difficult to take eyes off him".[40] Deepanjana Pal of The First Post noted that "Vikram's real job in Khoobsurat is to be an Indian Mr. Darcy and Khan excels at that".[41] Aarti Jhurani of The National comments that "his (Khan's) female fan base is sure to grow by leaps and bounds after this film. He’s handsome, charming and stylish, and his good acting skills certainly makes this Pakistani actor one to look out for in the coming years".[42] Fellow actor, Ayushmann Khurrana concluded that he (Khan) is the new eye candy who can really act.[43]

Personal life

Fawad Khan is married to Sadaf Khan, whom he met online at the age of seventeen.[44] Khan and his wife got married on November 12, 2005 after eight years of courtship.[15][20][44] Khan and his wife have one son named Ayaan Khan who was born in 2008.[20][44] Khan and his family currently reside in Lahore, Pakistan.[20] Khan, along with his wife, is the owner of a clothing brand called 'Silk by Fawad Khan'. The brand was launched on 18 August 2012.[45]
