Production
In July 2017, it was announced that Anurag Kashyap and Anand L. Rai are coming together for a film called Mukkabaaz.[8] The idea of the film came from actor Vineet Kumar Singh, who started writing the stories he had seen of unsuccessful sportsperson's in the country because of the fault of the system. He mentions: "I’ve seen lots of stories like this, which stayed with me over the years. I wrote this film because I wanted to play this character and I knew the only way to do that is by writing it myself."[9] He alongwith writer Mukti Singh Srinet, had written the script in 2013 and was seeking a financer for it.[10][11][12] Singh had one condition that he would be the lead actor of this film, but no producer agreed on it.[13] Eventually, Anurag Kashyap got to know about it with whom Singh had worked on three films including Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), Bombay Talkies (2013) and Ugly (2014).[9] Kashyap felt that the script they had written was very similar to Rocky (1976). He then asked Singh to show him a Rocky in India.[11] Kashyap found one sequence in the script interesting where the guy tries to get a job. He felt the need of his own research for the film.[11] The film set in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh and is inspired by a true story.[12] For Kashyap, boxing and the case of Narsingh Pancham Yadav, who was accused of doping, prompted him for the film.[11]
Kashyap sent his second unit director Saqib Pandor, to record boxing tournaments on camera and the state tournament shown in the film is recreation of actual tournaments they had recorded on camera.[11] They witnessed a boxing tournament happening under the tent and without an audience because their own space was occupied by something else and other boxers who sit and watch them.[11] He also realised that after attending an actual boxing tournament in north India that there was no audience apart from people in power who decide which boxer should represent the state, and who will not.[14] Kashyap then told Singh to train himself and he started training in Mumbai. Kashyap told him not to do the "filmi training" but to become a hardcore boxer.[15][11] There are no boxing choreographers, action directors in the film.[11] Singh was trained for a year to play the boxer’s role by a coach, Anudeep Singh, who was coaching people for free and runs a garage for money. He told Kashyap that he wanted to be a boxer but he could not play. These stories were also used for the research of the film.[14] Singh did not disclose that he was preparing for a role in film to his coach.[13] Kashyap also watched several Hollywood films that had boxing as its setting.[16]
The film is Delhi's theatre actress Zoya Hussain's feature debut, where she plays a mute girl.[10] Kashyap had wanted to work with her after seeing her film Three and Half Takes, which he liked.[17] To prepare for the role, she spent several months learning non-verbal language and the character's mannerism.[9] Her disablity symbolises the lack of voice of women in her region.[11][12] Singh's box training began at National Institute of Sports, Patiala, a year before filming.[13][9] During the training, he could not see the punches coming and took real beating everyday and also broke some ribs. Later, he learned how to counter and defend himself. In the film, he fought with real International-level boxers with no choreography.[9] Mukkabaaz also deals with the issue of caste system and cattle slaughter in India.[18][19] It was shot in Bareilly, Varanasi and Lucknow in May 2017.[13][20] The film is singer-composer Rachita Arora's first film as a composer. She was recommended to Kashyap by Makrand Deshpande. She was doing a play with him and was standing outside a parking lot. Kashyap heard her song and asked her about its composer, to which she said that she composed it herself. Later, Kashyap signed her for the film.[11]

Calling it as Kashyap's best film so far, he wrote, "Kashyap is at his absolute best in Mukkabaaz, all heart and heartland, a movie made with a vintage filmi sensibility but highly modern skills. And a story that bleeds".[29] Indian Newspaper Hindustan Times gave the movie a 4.50/5.00, calling it as the best film made in last year or so.[30]
Times of India gave the movie 4 stars out of 5 stars while criticising its 145 minutes runtime.[31] British newspaper The Guardian rated it 3 stars out of 5 calling it a comeback bid for Kashyap.[32] Indian website Koimoi gave the movie 3.50/5.00 stars.
