Rockville station is a joint Washington Metro, MARC, and Amtrak train station in Rockville in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The station was opened on December 15, 1984, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The station is serviced by the Red Line, and is located in downtown Rockville at Hungerford Drive (MD 355) near Park Avenue. The government buildings for Rockville and Montgomery County are located about two blocks away, as are those of several large companies. MARC's Brunswick Line commuter trains and Amtrak's daily Capitol Limited share the station building with Metro. The Metro portion of the station has an island platform with tracks on either side, while MARC and Amtrak use the two tracks adjacent to two side platforms on the east side of the station.
History
The original Rockville station was built in 1873, and is one of the few survivors of the many picturesque county stations built along the Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and other 19th-century American railroads. The architect was E. Francis Baldwin, who also designed the adjoining freight house, built in 1887.[4] It is a brick Victorian picturesque structure with some Eastlake detailing, particularly in the roofline and gable decoration.[5] The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 as the Rockville Railroad Station.[3] It continued to serve as an Amtrak and commuter station until 1981, when the 400-ton station was moved about 50 meters to the south to make way for the Rockville Metro station which replaced it.[6]
The modern station opened on December 15, 1984.[7] Its opening coincided with the completion of 7 miles (11 km)[8] of rail northwest of the then named Grosvenor station and the opening of the Shady Grove, Twinbrook, and White Flint stations.[7]
