Move protection

The reason the village pump pages think they're protected is because they are, but only against page moves, using this new option that's been added to the protection feature. See Wikipedia talk:Protected page. I'll admit that it is a little confusing to figure out, and I guess this means that if you needed to really protect a move-protected page, you'd have to unprotect it first. --Michael Snow 17:44, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Yes, if the unprotect page would alert people when it's move-only protection, that would be a more sensible design. I've found navigating through the history of the newly organized logs quite buggy compared to page and contribution histories, but for now I would hope fixing the blocking/unblocking problem is a higher priority. --Michael Snow 18:04, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Category:Arabic poets

Thank you for telling me about it. There's no problem with the complete delete. There was only one poet in the category. It will be easy to recreate, and then I can go about populating it. I was very surprised when I saw that the category didn't already exist (more systemic bias in the Wikipedia?).

I have a question about another duplicate. According to Category:Substubs, there are two articles titled Altitude tent. I've done a little work trying to un-substub the article, so I've saved a copy just in case the same complete delete happens to that article. gK ¿? 22:20, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I wasn't implying that you weren't a helpful contributor to WP:RD; you're probably one of the most knowledgeable ones of the lot that answers questions, IMO. And I agree 100% with your sentiment towards people who don't do the obvious search before posting here; I get frustrated too. I'm half-tempted to put a prominent note on Template:RD header, but that probably wouldn't do much good (nobody reads that damn thing anyway). duplicate sub-categories

Hi - I saw your response in Village Pump about an instance of duplicate subcats, posted a similar problem to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard which Gadfium took care of. The subcats (there are two) are now not listed multiple times in the supercat, but each is recursively listed in its own category. Gadfium annotated the post in the noticeboard about this, but the request has now been archived. Can you either look into the recursive categorization or let me know someone who might be able to? I'm sure Gadfium would be interested in an explanation of what the problem is as well. The affected categories are Category:Cities in Hyogo Prefecture, Category:Cities in Kagawa Prefecture. Schlockitude

I did indeed miss your annoyed comment on talk:Schlock Mercenary. I've lately mainly been working on starting sleeping again, so my productivity's been just a bit impeded. I did not think that you were kidding or just shouting "Hey kids, get off my lawn!"

Now then, I'm forced to agree on the quality of the article, though not on the phrasing. Much of the text was added by a few astonishingly enthusiastic and perserving fans, who unfortunately are not very familiar with wiki standards. Even if the rewriter (yours truly) had been operating at normal efficiency, the content would still have been in considerable need of cleanup. However, I don't think it was a lost cause.

Keeping the detailed content on a separate, dedicated wiki is an excellent option, but not necessarily feasible here, the highly impressive Homestar Runner one aside - HR has a much larger fanbase, dwarfs SM in the amount of content it provides, etc. For the latter reason, having Schlock info good enough for the fans here shouldn't be an impossibility.

Here's what I'm planning to do: I'll definitely have a look around at Wikicities and similar sites. At the same time, I'll fish out the Schlock content Wikipedia had and start work on bringing it up to par. Once that's done, I'll add it either to a new, shiny Schlock-wiki, or back here, where it'll no longer shame the project. Pacific typhoon season

I'm thinking about VfD'ing 2004 Pacific typhoon season. It is far too large an area, surveyed by more than one source that have few English translations. I'm going to try to keep up with 2005 Pacific typhoon season on a private basis (It doesn't exist; I'll only put it up if I can keep up for a two week period) but I wanted your opinion on nuking 2004, and on maintaining 2005 at all. Maybe for the typoons, the best way would simply be a category? Part of the annoyance with doing *2004* is that there are few archives. I'm getting most of my information from forums, not from weather centers. Even Guam's hurricane center doesn't seem to keep archives of past storms on their website, which is why I think 2005 might be doable but 2004 is probably, at present, a lost cause. The best archives are the Unisys archives, and those are not exactly human readable. They're useful on a daily basis, but not when looking back over an entire year.

Cyrius, I found that accusation terribly offensive. I have never and will never lie to such a great multitude of people, and I was enraged when you suggested that all my 20+ articles are lies and falsehoods. That accusation offended me greatly, and I don't know when my distaste for you will subside. Is it wrong to share your creative ideas on this site? That is what you implied by saying that I created the names list page to deliberatly mislead people, which couldn't have been less true. In the space of two months, I have contributed nearly three decades worth of information and you stab me in the back. Golbez was very courtious. I disagreed with him, but I felt respected by his dissenting remarks. Your comments were blunt, aggressive and respect took a back seat. Now if you don't want me to get so angry that me and three decade of hurricane info disappear into thin air, I hope you will take these dissatisfactions to heart.

Half-million pool protection and million pool protection

There were several complaints made at WP:RFPP regarding the protection of the half-million pool. Since we could not find any reason for the protection, the page was unprotected. The Real Perfect Storm

Cyrius, do you think the idea of a Perfect Storm (a Category 5 hitting Miami) is too much of an opinion to be an article?

That's a fair point, Cyrius. New Orleans would probably be swamped under six feet of water with dykes breaking right and left. Andrew however, hit about ten miles south of Miami in a relatively underpopulated area. Homestead was leveled, but Miami was spared the brunt of the storm. The Great Miami hurricane of 1926 hit Miami dead on as a Category 4 and caused $100 million in damage in 1926 dollars. Using 2003 inflation and wealth normalization, that comes out to a mindboggalling $97 billion today and that was a four. But the New Orleans storm is an intriguing (and terrifying) idea. I shutter to think what the damage would be. Tropical Storm Matthew last year was a pitiful tropical storm when it hit near Dulac, Louisiana, burst a levee and flooded a whole neighborhood. I plan to ponder the placement problem in the near future.

Indefinite block

Please reconsider your indefinite block of User:The Recycling Troll. There is no good evidence that this is user 142. I asked a developer to look into this, and Brion's response was:

It's not really possible to "establish" someone's identity given the information at our disposal.

What I can clearly say is that recent edits by The Recycling Troll on en.wikipedia.org have not come from an IP address in the 142.177.* range. Note that this is merely an absence of evidence for a purported claim of identity, and has no bearing on whether the account should be blocked for any actual behavior.[3]

While this cannot be used to establish with certainty that TRT is not 142, it certainly casts doubt on that assertion. Given that there is no actual evidence for this user as a reincarnation of a banned user, we must judge on the actual behavior of the user. There is no policy that allows an indefinite ban for "stalking", so even if it could be determined with certainty that this user was stalking, any measures to be taken would have to be determined by consensus.

This continuing ban/unban cycle will not solve anything, so I will not unban one more time. However, I do believe that this matter needs to be studied to determine what mistakes were made and how we can avoid them in the future. Dear Cyrius, I note that one of the reasons that you give for continuing to block this user is trusting David Gerard's judgement, I am not willing to unblock at this time - did you notice that David wrote Michael Snow has stated on WP:AN/I that I was wrong about The Recycling Troll being 142. I do not agree that these actions ... would justify requesting a restraining order out in meatspace, this is the equivalent of watching how your congressman votes and writing to them on every issue - it is not stalking to monitor someone's contributions to a single public website.

You may feel that the entire "policy" system is broken (your emphasis), but that does not give you license to ignore policy. In the absense of any reason to block this user I cannot agree that the 'suspect' be 'detained'. In 'meatspace' this would be the equivalent of a policeman being able to arrest and detain me without letting me know what law I had allegedly broken, what process (if any) for appeal there is, or what I could do about it.

If you would like to craft a policy against checking of admin's (or any other user's) edits, and subsequent further editing, I invite you to try to do so, but currently, there is nothing to see except a small group of admins who seem determined to ignore the rules.

I disagree that this user has done anything that deserves blocking, other than annoy a prominent user. This, in itself, is not a blocking offense. Rick annoys me a lot.
