Rafael Nadal is the defending champion.

Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic is vying to equal Nadal's all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. He is also attempting to become the first man to win ten Australian Open titles, and the second man to have ten titles at a single major, since Nadal at the French Open.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament due to a right leg injury.[1]

Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Djokovic are in contention for the ATP world No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. In order to become No. 1, Ruud must reach the final, while Tsitsipas and Djokovic must win the tournament.[2][3]
