Bhavana
Years active2002-present

Bhavana Tamil(பாவனா)(born 6 June 1986) is a South Indian actress who acts in Malayalam and Tamil movies. She made her debut in Kamal's Nammal which won her critical acclaim and various honours, including the State award.

Family

This Thrissur girl, whose real name is Karthika, is the daughter of Asst. Cinematographer, G.Balachandran Menon and Pushpa. She has one brother named Jayaddev currently living in Vancouver, Canada.

Career

She debuted in Malayalam film Nammal opposite newcomers like Siddharth, Jishnu and Renuka Menon. The film was a big success and she got several offers in Malayalam. She has acted with almost all actors of Malayalam including Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Dileep, Jayaram, Prithviraj, Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya etc. Though she got several Tamil films she refused them due to tight schedules. Her first Tamil film originally offered was Koodal Nagar opposite Bharath but shelved due to some technical difficulties, but completed and released recently in April 2007. Her first released Tamil film Chithiram Pesuthadi was a huge success. After that she was flooded with offers in Kollywood. The subsequent Tamil films she did are Kizhakku Kadalkarai Salai and Veyyil. Veyyil was a huge hit in Tamil and her character Meenakshi won the accolades of both fans and critica. Her release in February 2007 Deepavali got very good reviews both for her ravishing girl-next-door looks and her acting in several difficult emotional sequences. Her next projects are Arya with Madhavan . She is also planning to shift to Telugu films. She is proud of her girl-next-door looks and wants to do character roles with a good mixture of glamour and scope for performance. She even refused to act in a Telugu film of Krishnavamsi. Her latest news is that she refused to be part of Simbu's new movie Kettavan because she thinks Simbu's image is tarnished in Tamil cinema these days and she doesn't want to associate with him. [1].Her latest news is that she might be doing the female lead to Allu Arjun in a new Tollywood film. [2]. Her role in the film is not confirmed yet.

Her Malayalam Career

Her first movie Nammal was released in 2002. The film also starred Jishnu and Renuka Menon. The film was a big success. Then in 2003, she became the part of big hit movies like Chronic Bachelor, C.I.D.Moosa, Swapnakoodu etc.

In 2004 her career turned dim. Her movies like Youth Festival, Parayam, Bunglavil Outha etc bombed at the box-office. She appeared in an Item Number in the film Runway in 2004. Her career was not a successful one in 2004.

In 2005 she got meaty roles in movies like Daivanamathil, Naran etc. She got the State Awardfor Best Character Actress for Daivanamathil in 2006. In 2006 she acted only two films. Chinthamani Kolacase, Chess were the films and were big successes. Her latest movie Chota mumbai is an average hit

Awards

  • FilmFare Award For Best Actress in 2006
  • State Award for Best Character Actress in 2006
  • Ujala-Asianet Award for Best Character Actress in 2006

Her Kollywood Career

Several Malayalam language films, such as Youth Festival and Police were dubbed into Tamil prior to her straight debut, however like many dubbed films they flopped leaving Bhavana without a solid platform to start from. Her first straight Tamil venture, Chithiram Pesuthadi opposite another newcomer, Narain was released in early 2006 but flopped and didn't run for two weeks. However after the audio launch, which happened after the film's release, the film was back in the theatre's. The film became a huge success and ran for over 100 days, primarily down to Gaana Ulaganathan's song in the film. Bhavana then became a sought after heroine and she went on a signing spree, picking to act with young heroes. But her next film Kizhakku Kadalkarai Salai, released in late 2006 did not perform well at box-office though there were high expectations. However her most successful movie in 2006 was Veyil opposite Bharath released in December 2006.

In 2007, her first release was Deepavali opposite Jayam Ravi in February which got her rave reviews and became a hit. Her latest release to date is Koodal Nagar, which she paired yet again with Bharath in sharing frames with Sandhya. Her upcoming projects are Arya opposite Madhavan, Rameswaram with Jeeva and Vaazhthukal, yet again with Madhavan. Her last film Deepavali celebrated its successful completion of 100 days on 18 May 2007[3].
