Error reports
Please post error reports regarding only what is currently on the Main Page or on Main Page/Tomorrow here.
For general main page discussions, go to Talk:Main Page.

Main Page error reports

To report an error you have noticed on the current Main Page or tomorrow's Main Page please add it to the appropriate section below. You can do this by pressing the [edit] button to the right of the appropriate section's heading. Also, please sign your post using four tildes (~~~~)

Note that the current date and time are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may not coincide with your local time zone. The next day's featured article of the day, picture of the day, and anniversaries update at midnight (00:00) according to UTC. The current time is 04:31 on July 2, 2024 (UTC). (Update)

Once an error has been fixed, the error report will be removed from this page; please check the page's history to verify that the error has been rectified and for any other comments the administrator may have made. Lengthy discussions should not take place here, and should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere.

References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error, and a suggested rewording is helpful with a stylistic complaint. The main page usually defers to supporting pages when there is disagreement, so it is best to achieve consensus and make any necessary changes there first.

Errors in the summary of Today's featured article on the Main Page

Errors in In the news

Cyclone Nargis

According to british news the death toll has exceeded 100,000 --Hadseys 12:33, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The instructions above say "The main page usually defers to supporting pages when there is disagreement, so it is best to achieve consensus and make any necessary changes there first." Cyclone Nargis says "estimates ... ranging up to 100,000", hence "at least 63,500" correctly summarizes the article. Art LaPella (talk) 13:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fierce fighting?

Fierce fighting erupts between supporters of Lebanon's government and the opposition in Beirut. taken from the main page by ffm on 12:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC) for context[reply]

That sounds a bit POV to me. Lunakeet 12:00, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to wikt:Fierce,
Extremely violent, severe, ferocious or savage.
Doesn't this meet that definition? It's a violent conflict, isn't it? ffm 12:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC) 12:54, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"the opposition" sounds like an attempt to obfuscate that it's Hezbollah fighting the Lebanese gov't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cremy (talkcontribs) 13:05, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"The opposition" is preferable to "Hezbollah," because some of the fighting has been done by other opposition groups, like `Amal. 71.235.91.212 (talk) 20:01, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It should be clear, in any case further clarification is in the article. ffm 14:09, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about armed clashes. Thats pretty much a definition of what is going on. Random89 18:17, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Edit: Yes, but "fierce" just has this POV sound. Lunakeet 19:45, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

←All right, now it's "Skirmishes between supporters of Lebanon's government and the opposition in Beirut erupt", which sounds very awkward to me. I suggest that it should be changed to "Skirmishes erupt in Beirut between supporters..." etc. Or, if it's so important to keep the city at the end of the sentence, at least change the ending to "erupt in Beirut". Waltham, The Duke of 04:18, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Lunakeet 12:14, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here it is now-Skirmishes between supporters of Lebanon's government and the opposition erupt in Beirut. Is that better? Lunakeet 20:27, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in Selected anniversaries/On this day

It should read Constitution Day in the Federated States of Micronesia, not the opposite. DandyDan2007 (talk) 04:03, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why? The former article has only a sentence fragment specifically about Micronesia; the other Constitution Days listed are different days, different constitutions and different countries. The latter article has two complete sentences about when its Constitution was signed. Art LaPella (talk) 05:05, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in Picture of the Day/Today's featured picture

The caption is, well, rubbish. Not in a formal encyclopedia style at all. Modest Genius talk 00:40, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a little puzzeled over a grammar error regarding the picture for the VP Warehouse fires in Helsinki, Finland. They article itself, once you click on it, reads: "they had stones thrown at them", whereas the paragraph on the main page reads: "they got stones thrown at them", which makes it sound like it was written by a Finn who's become too involved with the American dialect. User: jhendin May 10th, 2008

I agree with you 100%. The caption is absolutely horrible. It says "This event had been preceded by the May Day riots just a few days earlier." without actually referring to anything preceding. What event is it referring to? Are we supposed to surmise the entire event from the picture? Then it mentions "some people" which makes the caption feel like a casual conversation as opposed to a serious encyclopedic entry. The whole paragraph sounds like a non sequitur stream of conscious mess to me.--Elysianfields (talk) 19:28, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed most of the caption. If someone can make sense of the article and create a legible caption, please do so. --- RockMFR 19:56, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
