Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- A page should not be moved and a new move discussion should not be opened when there is already an open move request on a talk page. Instead, please participate in the open discussion.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus to move the page is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will carry out the request. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved". When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion may be closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Uncontroversial proposals
Only list proposals here that are clearly uncontroversial but require administrator help to complete (for example, spelling and capitalization fixes). Do not list a proposed page move in this section if there is any possibility that it could be opposed by anyone. Please list new requests at the bottom of the list in this section and use {{subst:RMassist|Old page name|Requested name|Reason for move}} rather than copying previous entries. The template will automatically include your signature. No edits to the article's talk page are required.
If you object to a proposal listed here, please re-list it in the #Incomplete and contested proposals section below.
Incomplete and contested proposals
With the exception of a brief description of the problem or objection to the move proposal, please do not discuss move proposals here. If you support an incomplete or contested move proposal, please consider following the instructions above to complete the proposal, and move it to the "Other Proposals" section below, normally under the earliest date on which all instructions have been completed. Proposals that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.
Other proposals
Please use the correct template; see the instructions above. Do not attempt to copy and paste formatting from another listing. |
- Aspirin → acetylsalicylic acid — The Aspirin name is legally a registered trademark in most of the world. The generic name is the proposed new name, also known by the initials ASA. Steelbeard1 (talk) 15:27, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Fear of the Dark (disambiguation) → Fear of the dark (disambiguation) —(Discuss) — Capitalization — Russ (talk) 11:48, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Elián González affair → Elián González —(Discuss)— editor moved article to this name despite opposition and gave the Gonzalez page an edit history (I assume intentionally) preventing reversion. Should be moved back to Elián González to preserve status quo until editor in question engages on talk page and tries to build consensus. --Wehwalt (talk) 07:55, 5 November 2008 (UTC)--Wehwalt (talk) 07:55, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Michael Whalen (journalist) → Michael Whalen —(Discuss)— Move over dab page, since only one entry now exists there --OttoTheFish (talk) 04:28, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Value (philosophy) → Value (ethics) —(Discuss)— Discussed on talk page, and the idea of moving it has not been rejected by anybody for weeks. The whole article deals with "ethic or philosophic value", but ethics may be regarded as a subdivision of philosophy, and the whole article, as far as I can see, only deals with that subdivision. For instance, intrinsic value already has (ethics) as an attribute. Specifying the subject will facilitate futher contributions. I know many redirects need to be changed, but I can deal with the main part of that. --The world deserves the truth (talk) 18:03, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- WirtschaftsWoche → Wirtschaftswoche —(Discuss)— see de:Wirtschaftswoche. --Kolja21 (talk) 05:03, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Pakul → Pakol —(Discuss)- This is the correct spelling and most common spelling as per Google search results. — NisarPakistani (talk) 02:52, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- POWERade → Powerade —(Discuss)- Fix capitalisation of trademark per WP:MOSNAME. — Richmeistertalk 18:25, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Le Cœur a ses raisons → Le cœur a ses raisons -(Discuss)- according to typographical conventions of titles in French (see fr:WP:CT), nouns after an initial Le, La or Les should be capitalized, except if the title is a full sentence, which is the case here. Mro (talk) 06:52, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- WBTS -> WBTS (FM) -(Discuss)- See info on the talk page. Georgia guy (talk) 14:11, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Phahon Yothin highway → Phahonyothin Road —(Discuss)— There is no single conventional romanization for this road name. Many local signs read Phaholyotin, Phaholyothin, etc. Between Phahon Yothin (two words) and Phahonyothin (one word), the latter is in more common usage. In addition, the road is named for Phot Phahonyothin. As his surname it is written as one word, and the road named after him should follow this convention. --rikker (talk) 12:17, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Bombing of Darwin (February 1942) → Bombing of Darwin —(Discuss)— Later redirects to former, no reason for a separate article about one bombing instead of one article about all bombings of Darwin. Article already mentions all bombings. --199.125.109.107 (talk) 05:31, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Liquidus temperature → Liquidus —(Discuss)— The current title is unusual (and a Google search backs that up), because it is not just one temperature (like 70K) but rather a temperature curve representing a phase boundary. See also solidus (chemistry). --Srnec (talk) 03:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Derek John Claremont Jones → Derek Jones —(Discuss)— Wikipedia prefers the standard format <First name> <Last name> for consistency and ease of location. There is no confusion with this title as there are no similarly-named articles. WWGB (talk) 01:26, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Anna of Swidnica → Anna von Schweidnitz —(Discuss)— Old name is almost unknown, new name is well-sourced in English -- Matthead Discuß 01:54, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Monadnock → Inselberg —(Discuss) - Inselberg, is the more common term, used in geology courses the world over, including the United States.132.160.43.101 (talk) 22:32, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Jetix (Romania & Russia) → Jetix Central and Eastern Europe —(Discuss)— I propose that this page is moved to "Jetix Central and Eastern Europe". The main reason for this is because this channel is listed so in the Eutelsat channel list, and also because it is not only intended for Romania and Russia, but also for Bulgaria. --Mégara (Мегъра) - D. G. Mavrov (talk) 20:01, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Banality of Evil → Banality of evil —(Discuss)— The phrase isn't usually capitalized. I doubt this move is controversial but I'm playing it safe. --BenRG (talk) 14:52, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Security belt of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic → ? —(Discuss)— The title is not neutral. The 7 districts of Azerbaijan, which are under control of armed Armenian forces, are generally referred to as occupied territories of Azerbaijan. 4 UN Security Council Resolutions [1] and resolutions of PACE [2] and other international organizations, as well as mass media use the term Occupied territories. But some may see the word "occupied" as non-neutral, and therefore something like Political status of 7 Armenian controlled districts of Azerbaijan or Political status of 7 districts of Azerbaijan, which are under Armenian control might be more acceptable. I see that this is what other similar articles are called, see for example Political status of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Any suggestions of other acceptable titles are welcome. —Grandmaster (talk) 12:48, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- I second. In most sources it referred as occupied territories.--Dacy69 (talk) 21:16, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree with Grandmaster, he has a point, these territories are known as occupied territories both in media as in official records, the title is POV and should be changed to Political status of 7 Armenian controlled districts of Azerbaijan Baku87 (talk) 11:50, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Vade retro satanas → Vade retro satana —(Discuss)— Someone rashly moved the page "vade retro satana" to "Vade retro satanas". Unfortunately "satanas" here is wrong; "satana" is the correct Latin according to authoritative sites. --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 05:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC) --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 05:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- The University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors → University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors —(Discuss)— The article "the" is not significant to the group's name. Even its website refer to them as "UPSA." --Starczamora (talk) 04:08, 3 November 2008 (UTC) Starczamora (talk) 04:08, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Officers' Training Corps → Officer Training Corps —(Discuss)— Correct name --Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 17:09, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Raymond Kwok Chow → Raymond Chow (gangster) —(Discuss)— His official name is Raymond Chow. No evidence of him ever being referred to as Raymond Kwok Chow. --Contributor168 (talk) 12:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Association of Armed Struggle → Union for Armed Struggle —(Discuss)— "Union for..." described in the article's opening as more common than "Association of..."; also, suspect "Association of..." meant to be "Association for..." --Sardanaphalus (talk) 11:09, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Brazilian Society for Health Informatics → Brazilian Society of Health Informatics —(Discuss)— They call themselves "of" not "for" according to current president and their registration with IMIA (the meta group for informatics associations --Karl.brown (talk) 05:22, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Mary (mother of Jesus) → Mary —(Discuss)— as per WP:COMMON. Current title is awkward, the word "Mary" is by far most commonly associated with this person. Mary, with nothing else on the end is the common name and there is no other Mary who that could be said of. Thus I propose this move and also suggest that the information currently located at "Mary" be merged with "Mary (disambiguation)". --Victory's Spear (talk) 22:24, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Criticism of Objectivism (Ayn Rand) → Criticism of Objectivism —(Discuss)— The "(Ayn Rand)" part of the parent article—Objectivism (Ayn Rand)—is merely a disambiguating qualifier, it is not part of the philosophy's actual name. Subpages are supposed to exclude the disamgiuator (e.g. Seal discography, not Seal (musician) discography; Isotopes of mercury, not Isotopes of mercury (element); List of Dexter episodes, not List of Dexter (TV series) episodes). — Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 19:19, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Sir Rupert Clarke, 4th Baronet → Rupert Clarke —(Discuss)— According to the official Standing Council of the Baronetage the succession by Rupert Clarke has not been proven, he is therefore not allowed to use the title (see http://www.baronetage.org/unproven.htm). Therefore it is incorrect to name the page Sir Rupert Clarke, 4th Baronet, it should be Rupert Clarke. Demophon (talk) 07:07, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- J. M. G. Le Clézio → Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio —(Discuss)— The full name is internationally known after his winning Nobel Prize and the previous move was closed too soon --Caspian blue 22:50, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yue Chinese → Cantonese (language topic) —(Discuss)— Yue Chinese is not a proper name. It is not the commonly used English name for Cantonese. It is only used by few people. It is not familiar to normal English users. Meanwhile it may refer to Cantonese people. See discussion page1 and discussion page 2. --Newzebras (talk) 14:21, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Edred of England → Eadred of England —(Discuss)— Britannica and Encarta both spell this king's name "Eadred". --Angus McLellan (Talk) 12:29, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology → S.M.A.R.T. —(Discuss)— As per WP:NC, "Titles should be brief without being ambiguous" --Hm2k (talk) 10:47, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women → Minister of Canadian Heritage —(Discuss)— "Minister of Canadian Heritage" has been in use longer, and is the current title as of the latest cabinet shuffle. Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of women can be split off later if necessary. - Gordon Ecker (talk) 06:21, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- MCG 3- 8- 2 → IC 1838 —(Discuss)— This is the listed name according to SIMBAD [3], and the current name is bad however you look at it. --70.55.86.100 (talk) 05:44, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- FDGB Pokal → FDGB-Pokal —(Discuss)— As the German Cup is found under DFB-Pokal, following the German name, it would only be logical to use the hyphenated form that is correct in German here as well. --Madcynic (talk) 20:14, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Relisting. JPG-GR (talk) 03:28, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Usagi-chan de Cue → Usagi-chan de Cue!! —(Discuss)— Consistency's sake for this one; it's a Japanese title precedented by Amaenaideyo!! and Negima!? on Wikipedia. --Geopgeop (T) 02:08, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
