wrong last name above infobox

someone changed "merkel" to "ferkel" (german for piglet - how funny) above the infobox, but i don't know how to edit that.

By the way, isn't it officially Angela Kasner? Or Merkel-Kasner? Or Sauer-Kasner? Or by now Angela Sauer?
Is it really according to the German law, that a married woman is wearing just the last name of the husband, whereas this doesn't even change in case of divorce? VKing (talk) 21:11, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
She took the name of her first husband at the time of marriage, and kept that name after her second marriage. German naming law allows couples to choose the name after marriage, and "no change of name" is a legal possibility, which is what happened here. Kusma (talk) 21:23, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

@Viking: Well, yes and no. Women (and men, for that matter- my father in fact chose my mother's last name) have to choose at marriage whether to keep their own name or not. She could have changed it after marriage had she wanted to, of course, and she could have chosen to keep her's all along, but she didn't. But as I mentioned, the same goes for men. Now you really make me curious: do most Americans really both keep their names at marriage (I mean, not occosianally, but as casual as you make it appear)? And whom are the children named after? I mean, children can't get second last names, can they? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.62.15.33 (talk) 18:53, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is Angela Merkel's mother born in Danzig, or in Elbing , what is correct spelling of mother's maiden name?

Angela Merkel was born as Angela Dorothea Kasner in Hamburg, the daughter of Horst Kasner (b. August 6, 1926 in Berlin-Pankow), a Lutheran pastor originally from Berlin, and his wife Herlind (b. July 8, 1928 in Danzig as Herlind Jentzsch), a teacher of English and Latin. Her mother is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Angela Merkel's great grandparent and grandparents lived in Elbing, Westprussia, Germany. The Drange daughter, married a gentleman name Jentsch, who is said to have come from Poland, according to Elblag sources. It is unclear, why Wikipedia spells the name Jentzsch and assumes Herlind was born in Danzig. Labbas 22 January 2007

Notable facts

  • In her office Merkel has a picture of the German-born Russian Empress Catherine the Great, who is described by Merkel as "a strong woman".[1]
  • In July 2006, during the G8 Summit proceedings at Konstantinovsky Palace, United States President Bush strode up behind Merkel and clasped his hands upon her shoulders in a massage-like way. Bush's action startled Merkel, causing her to flail her arms. The awkward exchange became a popular viral video on YouTube[2]
  • At the 2006 WEF (World economic Forum) in Davos, Switzerland the newly elected Merkel was dubbed "Queen of Davos" by the other attendees and subsequently the World's media.
  • On the 8 June 2006, Merkel launched her video podcast via the Bundeskanzlerin website, making her the first head of government to launch a regular video podcast.[3]

Claim of Merkel being anti-Muslim is unsourced POV

"Angela Merkel has consistently been anti-Muslim and has supported the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as Israeli agression against the Palestinians and Lebanese." ----Where is the citation? This seems more like slander than policy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.123.219.49 (talk) 16:25, 05 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Though I don't think it's legally slander, I do think, as it stands, it violates WP:NPOV, WP:OR, and WP:BLP. --Boson (talk) 18:46, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion it should be deleted immediately but since it has been repeatedly re-inserted I have now flagged it, in order to attract other views and in the hope that the IP editor who inserted it with no edit summary will discuss it. Does anybody think it should be kept? --Boson (talk) 23:31, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the wording here is a bit strong but the points are clearly important to some in the Islamic world. I will edit to try and get a more balanced presentation.--Trevor Bassett (talk) 09:50, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
