Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3) is a first-person shooter and online multiplayer video game by Epic Games and is the latest installment of the Unreal series after Unreal Tournament 2004. It is published by Midway Games and was released for Microsoft Windows on November 19 2007, PlayStation 3 on December 11 2007, and on Xbox 360 on July 3 2008. The Linux and Mac OS X versions of the game are planned to be released as downloadable installers that work with the retail disc. As of March 2009, this is yet to be released. However, Ryan Gordon has uploaded screenshots of the game running on both platforms. [7], [8]

Unreal Tournament 3 is the fourth game in the Unreal Tournament series and the eighth Unreal game, but it has been numbered in terms of the engine it runs on. The original Unreal Tournament uses the original Unreal Engine, while UT2003 and UT2004 use the Unreal Engine 2, and 2004 incorporates all of the content from 2003; therefore they are considered as the same generation. UT3 is subsequently part of the third generation, because it runs on the Unreal Engine 3, and does not reuse any content.[9] In March 2008, Midway announced that UT3 had sold over a million copies worldwide.[10]

Gameplay

Similar to the previous entries of the series, the game is primarily an online multiplayer title offering several game modes, including large-scale Warfare, Capture-the-Flag, and Deathmatch. It also includes an extensive offline single-player game with an in-depth story, advancing from the simple tournament ladder to such concepts as team members with their own individual personalities. The following game modes are included:

  • Deathmatch
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Capture the flag
  • Duel: A one versus one gametype. It uses a queueing system, the winner stays, and the loser goes back to the end of the queue. A typical match lasts fifteen minutes with the winner being the player with most frags.
  • Warfare: An amalgamation of Onslaught and Assault. While basic game rules are equal to those of Onslaught, Warfare adds unlinked nodes which can always be captured (supplying the capturing team with vehicles and a spawnpoint) and countdown nodes (which, after being captured and defended for a certain period of time, create a vehicle or trigger an event helpful to the capturing team) as well as the orb, which can be used to instantly capture and defend nodes.
  • Vehicle Capture the Flag: Capture the Flag, with vehicles as part of the map; this exists as a separate game type to Capture the Flag, above. Also, players are given a hoverboard rather than a translocator.
  • Betrayal: This Instagib game type places "freelance" players on teams and, as the members of the team kill enemies, a pot with that team grows. Anybody on a team with a pot can 'betray' the rest of the team by shooting them, thus taking the pot, but they must defend themselves from the betrayed teammates for 30 seconds after that, else the previous teammates will cash in on extra points.
  • Greed: Greed is a gametype that, like the UT2004 mod of the same name, focuses around collecting skulls dropped from dead players and capturing them in the opposing team's base. For Greed, the game uses all Capture the Flag and Vehicle Capture the Flag maps.

Modes not returning from the previous Unreal Tournament games include Invasion, Mutant, Onslaught, Bombing Run, Last Man Standing, Domination, Double Domination, and Assault; Assault was removed from the game during production.[11] Due to the game's customizable nature these game modes could be recreated by users of the game.

Weapons

Some of the game's weapons are from the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament like the Flak Cannon. Along with the ones from UT2003 and 2004 these include the Better and Improved Impact Hammer and the new Enforcer. Ones returning from Unreal Engine 2 include the Bio Rifle, Shock Rifle and Link Gun. Returning from Unreal and Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict, is the Stinger, which Combines into the Minigun to form the Stinger Minigun, the Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict looking Rocket Launcher as well as the UC 2: TLC Flak Cannon. A better Sniper Rifle is also present, which when shot is shown with a orange trail. The AVRiL, now known as the Longbow AVRiL, returns in a new way such as a laser to track missiles and guide new Spider Mines. The Redeemer remains the same. The Translocator, which now looks one-handed is still in the game. There was originally planned to be two other weapons called the Canister gun which would be a Combination of the Mine Layer and Grenade Launcher and a different functioning Target Painter which was planned to create a Hazard on most maps(Like a bridge collapsing), The 2 weapons were cut for an unknown reason. There are a new type of weapons known as Deployables, those are Spider Mine Trap, which replaces the Mine layer, and Spider Mines are now guided by the Longbow AVRiL, the Slow Motion cube, the EMP Mine, the Personal Energy Shield, and Shaped charge det pack. All of those are dropped by the Necris Nightshade except for the Shaped Charge Det pack, Though you can still carry the Slow Motion Cube, EMP Mine, Spider Mine Trap, the Personal Energy shield is the only known deployable you can't carry.

Vehicles

The vehicles have been split into two factions, the Axon vehicles (made by the Axon corporation) and Necris vehicles. The Axon vehicles are the same from UT2004, but several have significant gameplay changes. In addition, every player is equipped with a personal hoverboard, which is a skateboard-like device that allows players to traverse large maps and get towed when they grapple onto other teammates' vehicles. However, the hoverboard is very vulnerable to attack and any kind of hit will knock the player off the board and disable him or her for several seconds. Additionally, the player cannot use any weapons while on the board.

Axon Vehicles

The returning Axon vehicles include those featured in the Editor's Choice Edition of Unreal Tournament 2004 and are relatively more traditional. Included are the Manta - a fast hovercraft which is more maneuverable in UT3 using Dual rotor blades as Hovercraft effect, the Raptor -- Air Fighter with Jets and uses Dual Proton Bolters, Scorpion (light assault buggy, now equipped with mortars, blades that unfold in the front, and now has a speed-boost option which can be used to kamikaze itself into another target), Hellbender -- Armoured Jeep with Moderate speed an armour, firepower is contained with 2 Turrets using very similar firing patterns as the UT3 Shock Rifle. Cicada -- Ground attack air vehicle using 2 Rapid-Fire Rocket launchers and Mannable turret. Hellfire SPMA -- Mobile Artillery with vast-improvements to handling and accuracy via using camera drones. Paladin -- Large all-terrain vehicle using High energy Pellet launcher with Large shielding system. Goliath -- All-Purpose Tracked Tank with Single-Barreled cannon and Mannable Rapid-Fire Machine gun. Leviathan -- Huge Vehicle that has a Multitude array of turrets depicting much heavy versions of the Stinger Minigun and Shock Rifle 4 of which are mannable by players. The Driver controlling the Leviathan and its Main turret. The Leviathan can also deploy into a Stationary platform while wielding a Massive High Energy Ion Cannon like device.

Necris vehicles

The Necris (undead humans who are the opposition in the tournaments) have a rival set of vehicles. There are six Necris vehicles, and although they are not parallel to Axon's vehicles, they are intended to make a good balance against them.

Viper -- The Viper is a Ground-Skimmer like vehicle utilizing a 'Ninja-Star' Energy blaster fired at the front of the vehicle, like the Scorpion the Viper has a similar Kamikaze function where the user must remain immobile to charge the attack, the attack itself is most devastating. Nemesis -- The Nemesis is the Necris's version of the Axis Goliath, its chassis comprises of a Skeletal like frame with Adaptable Snake-treads which form and mold shape over the surfaces it travels. Weaponry consists of a Very powerful Dual-Plasma Blaster, which modifies as the vehicle changes poses. The Default pose is known as 'Normal' where the Fire rate of the weapons is average and the speed of the Nemesis is Average. The other 2 modes changes the Nemesis's firing power and speed either quiker or faster allowing the user to change tactics from Speed to aggression on the fly. DarkWalker -- The Darkwalker is a very iconic Necris vehicle with a chassis resembling a Tri-Legged Walker (similar to the tripods from H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds) its weaponry is comprised of a Dual Super Energy Plasma Streamer with immense power that will make short-work of most targets, it also has a secondary Turret that is also player driven, the Alternate fire of the Darkwalker will let loose a thunderous roar which will concuss and knock over any players underneath the Darkwalker's Legs. Fury -- The Fury is a Necris Air Vehicle using instead of Propellers and Jets a Gravitational Hover device which defies the planet's Gravimetric field so the vehicle can maneuver in a fully 3 Dimensional arc. The Fury carriers Four Mounted Plasma streamers similar to the Darkwalker though far less powerful though more accurate and have higher firing rate. Nightshade -- The Nightshade is mainly a Logistics craft using a Hover system as propulsion and manipulating a Cloak Device to move unseen through enemy territory, its primary function is to deploy various equipment such as 'Spider-Mines' small Mines with Spider legs which home on nearby targets and explode, 'EMP Mines' which can disable vehicles, 'Shield Generator' which creates a Sphere of Energy which is impenetrable but can be traversed through and a 'Slow-Motion Cube' which generates a cube of energy where time slows down and anything which travels through will have temperamental movement loss including fire rate. Scavenger -- The Scavenger is an Orb-Shaped vehicle with a chassis of Tripod legs (Though much small than a Dark-Walkers) Its posture would indicate its name 'Scavenger' as it roams the battlefield in a Scavenger like manner, it carries with it a Small Spherical shaped Drone which will attack any player the user requests via a Targeting laser, alternate fire transforms the Scavenger's Tripod legs inward effectively creating the vehicle into a 'Ball' with similar physics, players can be squashed in this state and primary fire will activate a Spinning Scythe blade which flails around the vehicle.

Teams

Unlike the previous Unreal Tournament games, where the single player campaign follows a plot based around the Tournament Grand Championship, the single player campaign does not follow a plot based around the Tournament Grand Championship, and therefore several of the teams within Unreal Tournament 3 are not Tournament competitors:

  • Necris, appearing in several previous titles, the Necris are a species of nanotechnologically modified humans who were originally designed by the Phayder Corporation to function as ultra-high performance Black Ops forces for hire from Phayder. White-skinned, gothic-looking and with advanced nanotechnology-based equipment designed by Phayder, they are the antagonists of UT3. The Necris Championship team are known as "Black Legion", and several members of the group appear in UT3, including Kragoth the Star Slayer and Malakai.
  • "The Corrupt", though not specifically identified by this name within UT3, are a team of artificially intelligent cybernetic beings, maintained and financed by the mysterious Liandri Mining Corporation (originators of the Tournaments) whose domination of the robotics markets is unchallenged. They were originally lead by Xan Kriegor, the first Tournament Grand Champion until his defeat by Malcolm and his team Thundercrash. The Corrupt are now led by newcomer Matrix, a Liandri executive who upgraded at the request of his superiors.
  • Iron Guard, an ancient Tournament team of hardened mercenaries and ex-military, led by long-time Tourney veteran Lauren. Iron Guard have been hired by the Axon Corporation.
  • Iron Skull, a reptillian species called the Krall, they served as expendable slave warriors in the Skaarj empire before its contact with the human empire under the New Earth Government. Many Krall prisoners of war entered the empire during the Human/Skaarj War, some entering the Tournaments. The Necris chose to make use of this resource, purchasing the Iron Skull clan and putting them into service as shock troops.
  • Ronin, a team protected by red armour, with yellow glowing LEDs and henna tattoos; they were a clan of warriors whose duty was to defend the Twin Souls mining colony - after Twin Souls was destroyed by the Necris, they fled to Earth and now represent Izanagi Corporation, who sponsor them as mercenaries and Tournament combatants. They were given their name by the Izanagi.
  • Thunder Crash, although this team was not initially in the game itself, Malcolm appears in story mode cutscenes as a pivotal character.

Limited Collector's Edition

On October 26, 2007, a limited collector's edition of the game was announced to be released on PC. This version of the game features an exclusive collector's edition tin, a hardcover art book. A bonus DVD is also included, featuring more than 20 hours of Unreal Engine 3 Toolkit video tutorials, the history of the Unreal Tournament series, and behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Unreal Tournament 3. The Limited Collector's Edition is being sold in the United States, Latin America, Europe, South Africa, Australia and most other territories.[12]

Expansion

There is an expansion for the game in the works which will come out in 2009. In addition to new maps, it will probably include an ending to the single-player campaign, new teams such as Malcolm's Thundercrash, and possibly new game types. Mark Rein, after Midway started dropping all "non-core" licenses, stated the following:

Our arrangement with Midway isn't a license but rather a straight publishing agreement and Midway is still very much the publisher of Unreal Tournament 3. In fact, we're working together on a major expansion to Unreal Tournament 3, that we expect will excite and grow our UT3 customer base which incidentally, now numbers over a million units sold-through world-wide.

So far, little or no more information has been disclosed about the game.

On March 5, 2009, a free update called "Titan Pack" was released for the PC, the PS3 version of the pack was released on March 19, 2009.

The pack includes a large amount of new content such as the the Five maps and the Two Characters that were previously exclusive to the Xbox 360 version along with 11 brand new maps, two new game Modes ("Greed" and "Betrayal"), The Titan Mutator (as a player does better, they can grow in physical size while also carrying a modified homing rocket launcher and a modified shock rifle, a Berzerk powerup and UDamage powerup, as well as considerably more health and armor. From there, after attaining more points, the Titan can grow into a Behemoth which is twice the size, twice as powerful and dies with a redeemer blast after 40 seconds), a new Power up (a version of the slow field deployable now in power up form), a New vehicle, two new deployables and the addition of stinger turrets. A new patch was also released in conjunction with the Titan pack, which allowed for various AI improvements (especially in vehicle modes), networking performance upgrades and added support for Steam Achievements (PC) and Trophies (PS3). It also adds a Two Player Splitscreen mode(previously exclusive to the 360 version) and Mod Browsing for the PS3 version.

There are currently no plans to release the Update pack for the Xbox 360 version.[13]

Differences in the Xbox 360 Version

On its release, the Xbox 360 version had 5 exclusive maps, 2 exclusive characters, two-player splitscreen multiplayer mode, and all the downloadable content released by Epic already on the disc. With the release of the PS3 and PC "Titan Upgrade" patch on March 5, these version will be getting all the Xbox 360 exclusive content plus more.[14] The Xbox 360 version does not support user-generated mods and additional content will have to be verified by Microsoft before being released. In addition it is the first Unreal Tournament console port to not offer keyboard and mouse support. Also, the PS3 version supports actual mods [15] that can be uploaded and downloaded to the PS3's HDD or anything similar, and then activated through the menu.[16]

Patches

Windows version

The first patch for the PC (Windows) version was released on December 10, 2007 bringing the game up to version 1.1. The patch is around 240 MB and incorporates changes to the game settings, changes to gameplay and many bug fixes.[17]

The second patch was released on February 21, 2008 bringing the game up to version 1.2. The patch once again fixes various bugs and exploits throughout the game as well as making other changes, such as increasing the maximum player count in a game to 64.[18]

The third patch was released on August 13, 2008 bringing the game up to version 1.3. The patch once again fixes various bugs and exploits throughout the game as well as making other changes, such as midgame map voting, and many AI improvements.[19]

The fourth patch was released on March 5, 2009 bringing the game up to version 2.0. The patch fixes various bugs and issues as well as making other changes, such as better AI behavior, revamped User Interface and achievements on the Steam version of the game. The "Titan Pack" was released simultaneously with the fourth patch, adding large amounts of new content, including 16 new maps, new vehicles, new weapons and two new game types. The game was re-released on Steam under the name Unreal Tournament 3 Black, and accompanied by a time-limited price reduction and free weekend to publicise the game. Also, a non-Steam purchased version of UT3 can now be activated with Steam by using an existing CD Key, making it a full Steam version.[20]

PlayStation 3 version

The PS3 version supports both mods and keyboard inputs, and was said to be graphically superior to Gears of War by Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. The first patch 1.1 is about 44MB and was released on March 21, major changes include the possibility for players of both the North American and European version to play together, it fixes problems with some USB headsets and now displays best ping servers on top of the list. Some updates are only applied on the North American version since the PAL version released in March 2008 was partially updated.[21] The 2.0 patch was released on 5th of March 2009 and adds better PC Mod support, Smarter A.I, 47 Trophies and improved multiplayer support.

Reception

Unreal Tournament 3 received generally positive reviews from critics. The Windows version received an average score of 84% based on 38 reviews on the review aggregator Game Rankings,[22] and an average score of 83 out of 100 based on 40 reviews on Metacritic.[23] The PS3 version received an average score of 86% based on 41 reviews on the review aggregator Game Rankings,[24] and an average score of 86 out of 100 based on 41 reviews on Metacritic.[25] Xbox Magazine rated it 8.5 out of 10.[26] Midway announced in March that they had shipped over 1 million units worldwide.[27] GameSpot gave it a 8 out of 10 for the Xbox 360 version and 8.5 for PC and PS3.[28] PlayStation the Official Magazine gave it 5 stars out of 5 in its February '08 issue and states "UT3 looks great, but it's every bit the stunner under the surface."
