Sillanwali is a town of Sargodha District in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The town has recently been made tehsil headquarters with the creation of Sillanwali Tehsil[1] and is situated at 31°49'45N 72°32'22E[2] lying in the southern area of Sargodha, bordering with Jhang District in the famous Bhatiore area.

History

The town developed in the late 19th century during the rule of the British empire. It was planned to be an agricultural business hub called "mandi" (literal meaning wholesale market) in the local language.

It was a planned town developed after canals were built for agricultural purposes and a railway line was established. Even today, the railway station Sillanwali is known as "Sillanwali Mandi" in railway records. Before partition, Sillanwali was famous for the production of cotton. Most of the population were Hindu Khatris. After partition the Hindus migrated to India and their property was taken over by the Muslim Sheikhs (having Khatri Origin) most of whom had migrated from Karnal District of Haryana state which had been part of united Punjab but became part of Indian Punjab after 1947.

After 1947, Jat Sikhs migrated to India and a number of immigrants have migrated to these villages after partition in 1947 and most them belong to Arain, Gujjar and Rajput tribes.

Sufi tomb

The Mazar of Pir Muhammad Barkhudar Gilani Qadri is located here in Sillanwali and is the oldest and most celebrated Mizar/Darbar in the area. Urs is held on March 1, annually. Hundreds of murids attend this event from different cities, and regions, as well as local folks from the city.

The main towns of Sillanwali are Islam Nagar, Shareef Colony, People Colony, Chanan Pura, Dhaulka Town, Noon Colony, Rana Market, Model Town, Aslam Colony, Beegi Purra, Zaffarabad, Rehman Purra, Garden Town and Aziz Park.

Markets of Sillanwali

Main Bazar is the largest open-air market of Sillanwali. There are many general stores in this bazaar. The major ones are: Aslam General Store, Fayaz General Store, Khalid General Store, Syed and Sons General Store, Akram Shah General Store, Siqque Book Depot, Shahzad General Store and Zaheer General Store.

Saeed Bazar is one of the famous market of the area in which General Store, Cloth Depot, Sport Depot.

Irshad General & Garments store is one of the famous store of the saeed bazar area. proprietor of the store is "Sheikh Irshad Hussain" & "Sheikh Ibrar Hussain"

Cricket Clubs of Sillanwali

Shahzad cricket club is a leading cricket club of Sillanwli. The main competitor of this club is the Prince cricket club. Other famous club are Preety cricket club of Noon colony and Chanan Poora cricket club. The matches are held in the grounds of High School no 1, Railway Ground and Noon Colony Ground.

Agricultural Lands in Suburbs of Sillanwali.

The adjoining villages are dominated by Rajas, Jatts, Bhatti, Kalyar, Khokhar, Haral and Chadhar tribes of the local Kirana Bar area origin. During the last quarter of the 19th century right after the start of new irrigation system, Jatt tribes of Sialkot settled in then undeveloped land. The villages where they own lands are highly developed as traditionally Jats are known to be good cultivators. Jatt clans in this area mainly belong toBasra, Ghumman, Bajwa, Kahlon, Dhillon and Cheema sub tribes of Jatt origin.

Specialty

Sillanwali is famous for its woodwork (Handicrafts). Its handicrafts are largely exported to other cities, provinces and even to other countries. Very skilled personnel in this field are present in the city. Once the British High Commissioner also visited the city to check these products. PTV often presents a program on the topic. Muhammad Afzal (Chak No. 128 NB Walay) is the most famous craftsman in the area. He is a specialist in making the conventional crafts such as MORRAS, Cots, tables, clocks, Sofa Set, beds etc. along with using contemporary techniques. His main specialties are carving, engraving, MOTI work, polishing. TDAP, PTV and many other representative of arts/crafts institutions of Pakistan and abroad as well visited to work site of this man.
