'BLP sources' template

Please don't remove the 'BLP sources' tag until all of the facts in an article have been referenced. In the case of Karefa Kargbo, the citation I added only serves to verify the position of Foreign Minister. The remainder of the facts presented still require sources for verification and as such the tag still applies. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 19:19, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Depends. Sometimes I patrol recent changes; sometimes I click through a link, find an article that needs categories, and populate it. Basically, I add them when/where I find a place. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:08, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ken Block

First off, he does deserve to go up there, given he got a good chunk of the vote. However, the Moderate Party has no coding on the Election infobox, and since I am not good enough at advanced coding to add the party, I hid him until the Moderate Party is added. Do you know anyone that could add the Moderate party to it? Toa Nidhiki05 17:33, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Evaristo Carvalho

Hi! Thanks for the improvement at Francisco da Silva. Do you know if Carvalho's presidency of the legislature is provisional? The minutes that I cited in that article seemed to say that, but I really don't read Portugese and was relying on machine translation. If it is provisional, we should note that in the article text like I did in the succession box, if it isn't, then we should fix the secession box. --je deckertalk 05:50, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wish I could help you out on that one. I can't read Portuguese either. I will look around over the next day or two see what I can find. Thanks for doing the hard work and sourcing BLPs.--TM 06:10, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'm gonna go with provisional in the text in the meantime, but feel free to fix it if you come up with anything, I didn't have much luck myself. Thanks again! --je deckertalk 06:14, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TM, I need a little help on this. Policy

I'm trying to work on a policy/guideline proposal to make uniform guidelines as to what criteria candidates should reach to gain inclusion on an infobox in U.S. elections; it is impossible to work them on a page-by-page basis. Lamar Odom

To your comment "this is not long term relevant". I think that the Power Balance discussion is very relevant short and long term. Odom is making a statement (several places not just on the one video I cite) that Power Bracelets give you an edge, he endorses the bracelet every time he walks out on court wearing one. It is something that he will not play without and I cite the interview (and his comments). Power Balance is in the news and very current, possibly more relevant than, "Odom is noted for being a professional athlete with a significant fondness for candy." As well as the following, his appearance on a music video being in a Taco Bell commercial and his appearance at a wedding. Dominique Dawes and Yahoo News are just as relevant as the former. I respectfully ask that you revert my edit on Lamar Odom. SGerbic (talk) 02:00, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Given that two editors have removed the content, I think this discussion is better held on the talk page of the article in question rather than on my talk page. Feel free to post your concern at talk:Lamar Odom and we can come to a consensus.--TM 02:50, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jacoby Ellsbury

A simple Google search will yield numerous articles that mention Jacoby's father Jim as being German and English. Here's one of many links. http://thethunderchild.com/themudvillemegaphone/NewsFiles/EllsburyFAQ.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Engines On (talkcontribs) 07:56, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is not a reliable source. Find a reliable source and add the information back with a citation.--TM 04:24, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The source you added is a deadlink. In the future, don't add uncited ethnicity or religion categories to articles without a source; it can be considered a violation of BLP.--TM 07:03, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I used a generally accepted source this time. Occasionally, I don't put categories such as religion or ethnicity in the articles themselves (which would mean they would of course have to be sourced), because they sometimes clutter the article. From now on, I'll follow your advice and cite all categories and place them in an article's content. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Engines On (talkcontribs) 07:55, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmer Fredette

One of the problems with Wikipedia is the category creep. Too many people trying to proliferate new category topics that provide little in the means of organization or enlightenment. For example, the category 'Living People' only delineates between living and dead. Why not 'Males' and 'Females'? 'Bi-peds'? 'Right-handed'? 'Carbon-based'?

However, this particular article has a limited number of categories and I can agree to leave these untouched. Could you explain why you list Jimmer as a 'shooting guard'. He is typically listed as a point guard, but like all players in basketball spends a certain amount of time at shooting guard. Seems redundant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fullrabb (talkcontribs) 11:55, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

His BYU profile calls him a shooting guard in the first section. Categories are harmless and in fact removing them can be very harmful. The categories you removed serve purposes and I hope you will not continue doing this for any article.--TM 14:10, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AfD/Jill Stein

I don't know what your beef is with me, but whatever it is, get over it. You can't discount my vote and opinion because you don't like it. And, FTR, I don't like the page. I don't want it deleted for that purpose however; I feel it is rather pointless and un-notable. Toa Nidhiki05 22:11, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Then give a policy-based reason for wanting to delete it. You say she is not notable, I say she is. Afd is not a vote, it is a discussion. Saying the article is not horrible but she is not notable is just as useful as saying WP:IDONTLIKEIT. You regularly give reasoning for your edits as "it is the rule" or "she isn't notable" but those simply aren't valid. If it is a rule, cite it. If she isn't notable, show how she isn't notable. Prove it.--TM 22:50, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for letting us know that we need to cite nicknames and statistics, i was unsure. i have found a citation and will reference it.

Unfortunately it needs to come from a more reliable source than that. I suggest that you only edit from a user name if you want to seriously improve the article. Read the Wikipedia guidelines on sources before editing again. Thanks--TM 01:04, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

kyrie irving posts

as a new member to wiki i was wondering how to properly give a citation for Kyrie's nickname. As a student at Duke, i have heard and seen the fans call him the truth and so its his nickname. how can you cite something like that, nicknames are formed in this manner, not published first on some easily accessible reliable source. your help is appreciated.

I'll be glad to help. The first step, as I wrote above, is to read the Wikipedia policy on reliable sources. If the nickname hasn't been published in a reliable source yet, you should wait until it is. Wikipedia isn't about "the truth" but it is about what is verifiable with reliable sources. Maybe the campus newspaper has used the nickname. In that case, it would probably be sufficient. You cannot just cite hearing it from other students though.--TM 03:11, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Ahmed Abdel Haye Kira for deletion

A discussion has begun about whether the article Ahmed Abdel Haye Kira, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ahmed Abdel Haye Kira until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Jeepday (talk) 14:23, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Festivus

Thanks for protecting the Festivus page. The date is December 23, and this has been under attack on and off for years. Now a red-link user is trying to add a change into the lead that it can be celebrated any day during the year. What do you suggest we do about these and other vandals (another vandalism last year were advertisers trying to get their ads onto the page). I protected the page throughout December last year, and it was a battle. I'm back for the duration, and it is very good to meet you. Randy Kryn 2:07, 10 December 2010

Saw your note on that red-link users page. The reference he provides is just from a non-expert, the Seinfeld Show, which is the template for the holiday, sets it on the 23rd. That was written by the son of the founder, Dan O'Keefe. If a website or a book said that the fourth of July could be celebrated on any day of the year, and was used as a reference, it would be deleted without delay. Thanks again, Randy Kryn 2:14, 10 December 2010
Reverts going on. Every aspect of the holiday--the pole, airing of gr., miracles, etc.--come from the episode of the Seinfeld show. This episode sets the date as December 23rd. If that can be changed by someone writing a book, then the aluminium pole can suddenly become anything anybody wants it to be. Randy Kryn 14:23, 10 December 2010
I've tried to get the reverter to hold a discussion on the talk page, nothing so far. A possible compromise: Put the question of the date in a Controversy or Dispute section near the bottom of the page. I really can't think of other disputes other than the date, the entire template of the Seinfeld Show episode is accepted by Wikipedia as the blueprint for Festivus. Again, thanks. How do you want to cite this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kkkkpuckett (talkcontribs) 08:13, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on DeAndre Presley requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Jimmy Pitt talk 20:21, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here and here the park's capacity is listed as 3,000. However, taking a look at the up-to-date pictures here and here, it appears that a reduction of seating area has been made, so I think you're right and the park's current capacity is 500. The only problem is that the majority of sources are not up-to-date with the 500, with the thankful exception of the St. Joe's athletic site, which is the current citation of the capacity bit. Sorry for my error; I've switched it back. Kithira (talk) 17:10, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Zach Frazer

Thanks for the compliments on the work, and thank you for the work you've done. I had thought about Frazer's notability for a bit, especially since he hasn't won any awards (outside of high school). However, this year, he will be the starting quarterback for a BCS team. In addition, in the subjective side of notability, he's probably more widely known than many others with articles (Danny Desriveaux, Courtney Robinson, etc). — Preceding unsigned comment added by NationalFlagBlue (talkcontribs) 02:55, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A good idea

Happy holidays.
Best wishes for joy and happiness. Wanted to wish you joy of the season and to give you a pat on the back since your idea of creating a List of islands of Maine (rather than simply adding that as a category to existing island pages) has turned out to be a very good one. Interminable labor, but I am learning a lot as I go. Best wishes for a great New Year. ElijahBosley (talk ☞) 16:52, 16 December 2010 (UTC) [reply]

Brad Evans

Hi there; any reason you removed a seemingly-valid category from Brad Evans's page? Regards, GiantSnowman 15:41, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, because he is already in the Category:UC Irvine Anteaters men's soccer players, which is a subcategory of Category:University of California, Irvine alumni. Please change it back to the correct categorization.--TM 15:43, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Any reason he can't be in both categories? I mean, he is both a UC Irvine Anteaters soccer player AND a UCI alumni, isn't he? GiantSnowman 15:53, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but that isn't how it works with categories.--TM 15:58, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is - for example, every person in Category:England international footballers is also in the parent category Category:English footballers - and that's the same for every footballing nation on Wikipedia. GiantSnowman 16:02, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I assure you that it is not. I suggest you read this discussion and WP:CAT. There is a general rule for categorizing only into the most detailed sub-category. Perhaps the football categories should conform to the rest of Wikipedia, but either way, it is incorrect to have both categories in the Brad Evans article.--TM 16:08, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Reading WP:DUPCAT, I would say that it is permissible to have both categories in the Evans article. GiantSnowman 16:12, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I disagree. Perhaps you should bring it up for discussion and see what others think.--TM 16:13, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea, where do you think would be the appropiate forum? GiantSnowman 16:21, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
