Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (海賊戦隊ゴーカイジャー, Kaizoku Sentai Gōkaijā, [Note 1][Note 2]) is a 2011 Japanese tokusatsu drama in the Super Sentai Series. It is the 35th entry in Toei Company's Super Sentai Series, following Tensou Sentai Goseiger. It premiered on TV Asahi on February 13, 2011, joining Kamen Rider OOO as a program featured in TV Asahi's Super Hero Time programming block. The series has a pirate (海賊, kaizoku) motif and as the 35th anniversary series, the protagonists have access to the powers of the previous 34 Super Sentai teams. The catchphrase for the series is "Let's put on a show!" (派手に行くぜっ!, Hade ni ikuze!).[1]

On July 30, 2010, Toei applied for trademarks on the title Kaizoku Sentai Gōkaijā (海賊戦隊ゴーカイジャー) to be used on various products. The Japan Patent Office approved these trademarks on August 26, 2010.[2][3] During the Super Sentai VS Theater programming on December 26, 2010, the series was officially announced in a commercial. A Tokyo Dome City event for the premiere, serving as the introduction of the cast and theme song singers to the public, held on January 29 and 30, 2011.[4]

Plot

A group of young pirates come from space to Earth to obtain the "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" (宇宙最大の宝, Uchū Saidai no Takara). However, they end up facing the Space Empire Zangyack, whose earlier invasion forces were wiped out by the 34 Sentai groups long ago before a new invasion force is established under Commandant Oiles Gil, the emperor's son. As a result, due to their history with the empire, the space pirates use the powers of the older teams and attempt to master their powers to fight the Zangyack forces as the Gokaigers.

Characters

Gokaigers

The Gokaigers are young space pirates who originally came to Earth to obtain "The Greatest Treasure in the Universe" before getting dragged into fighting the Zangyack. They are based on the Gokai Galleon, which is navigated by their robot parrot Navi (ナビィ, Nabyi), and able to assume the forms of any member from the previous 34 Sentai groups.

Captain Marvelous/Gokai Red (キャプテン・マーベラス/ゴーカイレッド, Kyaputen Māberasu/Gōkai Reddo)
The young captain of the Gokai Galleon and team leader.
Joe Gibken/Gokai Blue (ジョー・ギブケン/ゴーカイブルー, Jō Gibuken/Gōkai Burū)
The calm and seriously loyal firstmate.
Luka Millfy/Gokai Yellow (ルカ・ミルフィ/ゴーカイイエロー, Ruka Mirufi/Gōkai Ierō)
A tomboyish girl and the ship's lookout.
Don Dogoier/Gokai Green (ドン・ドッゴイヤー/ゴーカイグリーン, Don Dogoiyā/Gōkai Gurīn)
The ship's mechanic.
Ahim de Famille/Gokai Pink (アイム・ド・ファミーユ/ゴーカイピンク, Aimu do Famīyu/Gōkai Pinku)
The newest member of the group and thus new to piracy.

Zangyack

The evil Space Empire Zangyack (宇宙帝国ザンギャック, Uchū Teikoku Zangyakku) seeks to take control of the Earth. The fleet sent to invade is led by Commandant Oiles Gil, before being defeated by the past 34 Super Sentai teams. Oiles resumes the invasion with his three officers: the elite soldier Chief of Staff Damaras, the scientist Development Technical Officer Insarn, and the mysterious Special Duty Officer Barizorg. They are further supported by their Non-Commissioned Officers Sugormin, the Gormin Sailors, Action Commanders, and the occasional hired help from previous organizations that the previous Sentai battled.

Legends

In addition to the main characters, characters from previous Super Sentai Series, known as Legends (レジェンド, Rejendo), make guest appearances in Gokaiger.

Tsuyoshi Kaijo/Aka Ranger (海城 剛/アカレンジャー, Kaijō Tsuyoshi/Akarenjā, 1)
Tsuyoshi Kaijo is a member of EAGLE who led the Gorangers against the Black Cross Army as Aka Ranger. He later led the Super Sentai groups against Zangyack in the Legend War before calling for them to sacrifice their powers to wipe out the first invasion's armada.
Aka Red (アカレッド, Aka Reddo, 2)
Aka Red is the spirit of the Super Sentai's red warriors, able to use his Soul Advent to assume the forms of the first 29 red-suited Sentai members. He tends to appear when the world is in need of the Super Sentai, appearing on Earth to Eiji Takaoka to gather the ultimate Sentai together to battle Chronos. After the Legend War, Aka Red appeared on Captain Marvelous's planet, giving him Navi and the Ranger Keys to find the Greatest Treasure before sacrificing himself to ensure Marvelous's escape.
Kai Ozu (小津 魁, Ozu Kai, 2-3)
Kai is the youngest of the Ozu siblings who led the Magiranger family as Magi Red (マジレッド, Maji Reddo) against the Underground Hades Empire Infershia's forces before they destroyed its evil god N-Ma forever, becoming a liaison to the reformed Infershia. Donning his father's traditional Magitopian robe, Kai is labeled by Navi as the figure in black the Gokaigers are to meet. With help from Heavenly Saint Flagel (天空聖者フレイジェル, Tenkū Seija Fureijeru), Kai proceeds to reveal the true power of the Ranger Keys by enabling Don to have his team unlock the Magiranger Keys' full power.
Marika Reimon (礼紋 茉莉花, Reimon Marika, 5)
Affectionately called "Jasmine" (ジャスミン, Jasumin) by her friends, Marika is an officer of the Special Police Dekaranger team serving as Deka Yellow (デカイエロー, Deka Ierō). She arrests Captain Marvelous when he goes to seek out the police for the next step towards the Greatest Treasure in the Universe. A fight ensued between them, and Captain Marvelous fled the police with handcuffs on.
Doggie Kruger (ドギー・クルーガー, Dogī Kurūgā, 5)
Affectionately called "Boss" (ボス, Bosu) by his subordinates, Doggie Kruger is the commander of the Earth's Special Police Dekaranger forces and fights crimes as Deka Master (デカマスター, Deka Masutā). He is initially distrustful of Captain Marvelous as he is a pirate, but he eventually chooses to have faith in the man's sense of pride where he walks his own path, even if the entire universe will be his enemy. He releases him from the handcuffs shortly afterwards.
Banban Akaza (赤座 伴番, Akaza Banban, 5)
Affectionately called "Ban" (バン) by his teammates, Banban is an officer of the Dekarangers serving as Deka Red (デカレッド, Deka Reddo). He appears once Buramudo is destroyed, clearing the Gokaigers of their piracy charges, and tells them to use their powers wisely or else.
Jyan Kandou (漢堂 ジャン, Kandō Jan, 7)
Jyan Kandou is a master of the Geki Jū Tiger-Ken (激獣タイガー拳, Geki Jū Taigāken) style of Jūken who fought against the Rinjūken branch as Geki Red (ゲキレッド, Geki Reddo) of the Gekirangers. He teaches Ahim and Doc the ways of Geki Jūken so they can access the greater powers of the Gekiranger Ranger Keys and beat Pachacamac XIII.
Master Xia Fu (マスター・シャーフー, Masutā Shā Fū, 7)
The grand master of the Geki Jū Felis-Ken (激獣フェリス拳, Geki Jū Ferisuken) style of Jūken, the Gekirangers' mentor and leader of the Seven Kensei, mastering all three of Geki Jūken's aspects and able to channel Kageki.
Kakeru Shishi (獅子 走, Shishi Kakeru, 9)
Kakeru Shishi is a veterinarian who was chosen by Gao Lion to fight the Ogre Tribe Org as Gao Red (ガオレッド, Gao Reddo) of the Gaorangers. He observes the Gokaigers at first as selfish and typical pirates, but after some convincing from Ahim and Doc, and seeing the the rest in action, he changes his opinion of them and walks away hoping that GaoLion will get along with them.
Kaoru Shiba (志葉 薫, Shiba Kaoru, 11-12)
Kaoru Shiba is a noblewoman, the 18th head of the Shiba House, who was secretly trained to be a samurai and seal away the Gedoushu as Shinken Red (シンケンレッド, Shinken Reddo), as her kagemusha stood in her place leading the Shinkengers. When the Gokaigers appear searching for a samurai, she challenges them to retrieve the Shinkenger Ranger Keys, and Joe Gibken challenges her in hope she would reveal the Ranger Keys' hidden power. But when a Zangyack invasion forces the duel to be postponed, Kaoru uses her kuroko to help the Gokai Galleon crew when Captain Marvelous is injured in battle.
Kyousuke Jinnai (陣内 恭介, Jinnai Kyōsuke, 14)
Kyousuke Jinnai is a test driver at the Pegasus Auto Garage and leader of the Carrangers, using Carmagic Power to fight the Bowzock gang as Red Racer (レッドレーサー, Reddo Rēsā).

Episodes

Several of the episodes in Gokaiger feature and focus on the actions of one of the Legend Sentai. Those episodes are titled in a fashion similar to that of the original series. For example, episode 3, which features Mahou Sentai Magiranger, has a magic spell as part of the title, while episode 7, which features Juken Sentai Gekiranger, features one of the nonsense phrases that series protagonist Jyan Kandou would use.

Films

In addition to the protagonists' debut in Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs. Shinkenger: Epic on Ginmaku, Gokaiger will have two theatrical releases where they are the primary characters.

Super Sentai 35th anniversary film

Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle (ゴーカイジャー ゴセイジャー スーパー戦隊199ヒーロー 大決戦, Gōkaijā Goseijā Sūpā Sentai Hyakukyūjūkyū Hīrō Daikessen) is the film commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Super Sentai Series.[5] The film will primarily feature the casts of Gokaiger, Tensou Sentai Goseiger, and Himitsu Sentai Goranger, among the 199 total heroes from the Super Sentai series to appear. The film was originally scheduled for release on May 21, 2011.[6] However, due to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, filming was affected and the film's release was postponed until June 11.[7]

Gokaiger film

Traditionally, the Super Sentai series has a short film double-billed with the film for the year's Kamen Rider Series in the summer season of their broadcast. A feature film for Gokaiger double-billed with one for Kamen Rider OOO is currently set for release on August 6, 2011.[8]

Video game

Super Sentai Battle: Ranger Cross (スーパー戦隊バトル レンジャークロス, Sūpā Sentai Batoru Renjā Kurosu) is a Wii action game developed by Bandai Namco Games which will feature the protagonists of Gokaiger, Tensou Sentai Goseiger, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, Engine Sentai Go-onger, and Himitsu Sentai Goranger. It is scheduled for release during the fall of 2011.[9]

Notes

  1. ^ The name "Gokaiger" appears on the characters' transformation devices. In early promotional materials for the series, the name of the series is parsed as "Goukaiger" in English. The URLs for the series' various websites romanize Gōkai (ゴーカイ) as "Go-kai".
  2. ^ In early promotional materials for the series, the Japanese word gōkai (豪快, exciting; heroic) is used as a meaning for the series' title.
