The Kyle & Jackie O Show is Australia’s most listened-to breakfast radio show hosted by Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O on 2DayFM, Sydney.[4] Syndicated to over 78 stations nationwide, the show has been airing since January 16, 2005.[5][6] The show is a 5-time winner and 30-time finalist of the prestigious Australian Commercial Radio Awards.[7]

Show format

The Kyle & Jackie O Show airs weekdays in the breakfast radio timeslot of 6am-9am on 2DayFM, Sydney. The show’s one-hour highlights package Kyle & Jackie O Show: Hour of Power airs nationally between 6pm–7pm.

Kyle and Jackie O can also be heard nationwide on Saturdays between 3pm–7pm during the syndicated program Take 40 Australia show.[8]

The Kyle & Jackie O Show’s slogan “Breakfast With The Stars” is the foundation for the show’s format: the show airs a mix of celebrity interviews, Hollywood gossip, music, giveaways, phone topics and stunts.

Features/Segments

Jackie’s O News

Presented on the hour, Jackie’s O News is where Jackie delivers the morning’s celebrity gossip and news. Due the popularity and longevity of the segment, Jackie’s O News will often break news stories, most notably in March 2011 where Jackie revealed the names of the finalists for the Gold Logie.[9] Spoilers and leaks are often aired during “Jackie’s O News,” most notably in November 2010 when a dying character’s name from hit TV show Packed To the Rafters was revealed.[10]

The $1,000 Pop Quiz

Every morning at 7:00am a caller is picked to attempt to answer 10 questions correctly within the timeframe of 60 seconds. Each correct question is worth $100.[11]

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

A listener will call up with a major relationship dilemma. The listener leaves the fate of their relationship up to the opinions of the callers who’ll ultimately decide whether the person should “stay” or “go”.[12]

Is It Normal?

Listeners call up and ask Kyle and Jackie O whether a particular thing they do is normal or whether it’s unacceptably odd. In March 2011 a woman shocked Kyle and Jackie O when she asked whether it was normal that she was still breast-feeding her 7-year-old son.[13]

I Bet We Can’t Find A Caller ...

Following a rant from Kyle about how proud he is that his show has Australia’s biggest audience, he put his audience size to the test by announcing absurd topics and seeing whether anyone would call in. Since the segment’s debut in September 2010, the show’s listeners have yet to be stumped. Some of Kyle’s absurd phone-in topics include

  • someone that’s hooked up with Paris Hilton
  • someone that’s spent more than 5-minute with Barack Obama
  • someone that’s lost a limb to a shark
  • someone that’s been abducted by aliens
  • someone that's invented something that made over a million dollars
  • someone that's fell over 50 metres and survived[14]
  • someone that's faked a pregnancy
  • someone that's injured themselves during sex on the weekend
  • someone that's leading a double life
  • someone that's been shot[15]

You Know You’re Getting Old When ...

The segment launched in mid-2010 when Kyle realised he was only one year away from turning 40. During the segment Jackie O encourages listeners to call in with the tell-tale signs that they’re getting old.

The Birthday Wheel

Every morning at 6:30am a listener who is celebrating their birthday gets to receive a prize, determined by the spin of the “Birthday Wheel.” The actual wheel was originally a small wooden one, but as of January 2011 a brand new wheel was commissioned that includes hundreds of LED lights.

Celebrity Trash

Knowing ahead of a time that a certain celebrity will be joining them in studio, Kyle and Jackie O organise for a team member to steal the celebrity’s bin and bring it back to the studios. When the celebrity is in the studio, their bin is tipped on the floor and the contents are thoroughly examined to gain an insight into the day-to-day lives of the particular celebrity.

Team Intervention

When a member of the Kyle and Jackie O team is deemed to have stepped out of line, a public “Team Intervention” will be undertaken on air to correct the team member’s behaviour. Notable interventions include Producer Bruno Bouchet’s lack of bathing, Producer Matt Simpson’s weight-gain and Jackie O being a terrible party host.

Tradie or a Lady?

Kyle and Jackie O blindfold a male listener and have him kiss either a tradesman or a lady. If the blindfolded male’s guess is correct, he walks away with a cash prize.

Fat Bet

Since Fat Bet’s creation in April 2010, 3 seasons of the popular weight-loss competition have taken place. A group of overweight listeners are picked and given a target weight to achieve an eight-week period. If they fail, their unflattering “fat” photos that were taken in their underwear are put on a major Sydney billboard. Although “Fat Bet” sounds harsh, contestants claim the humiliation is the motivation they needed to lose weight.

Jackie’s Baby Club

During Jackie O’s pregnancy in late 2010 she teamed up with other mothers to form a baby club. In September 2010 Jackie O surprised members of her baby club by revealing they each won thousands-of-dollars worth of baby products.

Celebrity Co-hosts

Celebrities including Zac Efron, Lady Gaga, Russell Brand, Katy Perry, Joel Madden, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber have co-hosted the show. Part of the co-hosting role includes playing games, taking calls and playing pranks on listeners.

The Celebrity Photo Booth

In March 2011 a permanent “Kyle & Jackie O Show” photo booth was installed in the studio greenroom. Whenever a celebrity is in live, they’ll drop by the photo booth for a range of photos as well as delivering a personal 30-second video message to show listeners.

Jackie’s Inbox

Weekly segment that features from the best bloopers and internet crazes from across the world.

DB’s Diary

A weekly wrap up of The Kyle & Jackie O Show produced and presented by 2DayFM’s Director of Content DDerek “DB” Bargwanna. Bargwanna features his favourite clips from the week, as well as the most note-worthy audio from “behind-the-scenes.” It’s worth noting that even when the show isn’t on air, the microphones continue to record 24-hours-a-day, meaning DB’s Diary will often feature extremely candid audio.

Things That Two Straight Men Can’t Do

Following an incident where show producers Bruno Bouchet and Matt Simpson were seen putting sunscreen on each other, a regular segment was born where Kyle and Jackie O ask listeners to call in with what they believe two straight men can’t do.

The Trip From Hell

A listener is brought in studio to answer one simple trivia question. If the listener successfully answers the question, they win a holiday for 2. Behind 3 curtains in the studio are 3 people who will be "that" second person accompanying the listener on the holiday. The people behind the curtains could be anybody ranging from the listener's partner, annoying workmate, ex-partner, mean boss, best friend or sworn enemy[16][17].

Audience and ratings

As of March 2011, The Kyle & Jackie O Show has an 11.7 market share in the breakfast shift, with a higher cumulative audience than any other show in Sydney.[18] The show is the most successful FM breakfast show of its time slot, clearing the competition by 4.5 points.[19] The syndicated Kyle & Jackie O Show: Hour of Power airs nationally across over 78 stations, reaching 5.3 million Australians on the Today Network and a further reach of 6.4 million Australians on Southern Cross Media’s regional stations.[20][21]

Kyle and Jackie O’s national Saturday show Take 40 Australia attracts an audience of over 1.2 million listeners.[22] Upon commencing their show in the Sydney breakfast market in January 2004, it took Kyle and Jackie O only 12-months to claim the top FM spot in the ratings.[23]

Team members

The Kyle & Jackie O Show has a total of five content producers and three audio producers. The show is overseen by 2DayFM’s Head of Content (and former show Executive Producer) Derek “DB Bargwanna. According to Media Week Australia, The Kyle & Jackie O Show's content production team of Gemma O'Neill, Matt Simpson, Bruno Bouchet and Simon Greally are one of Australia's most formidable production teams. The show's producers reportedly work a minimum of 12 hours a day in order to keep the show's ratings at number 1[24].

Complaints

In August 2009 Kyle and Jackie O were suspended following a stunt where they put a 14-year-old girl onto a lie-detector and asked the girl about her sexual history.[154] Following the incident, a full-time censor was brought on board.[155] Despite the suspension, Kyle and Jackie O not only maintained their number 1 position in the market, but they actually grew .6 percentage points.[156]

In September 2009 Sandilands apologised after making an on-air remark about how actor Magda Szubanski could lose a lot more weight if she had spent time in a concentration camp. Although Szubanski indicated that it was a “beat up” and that she “couldn’t care less,” Sandilands was still suspended.[157]
