Revision as of 07:11, 19 September 2011

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 04:50 on 9 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

Gumbo

2 clear errors, one factual (peppers are a fruit, not a vegetable), one in relation to MoS (use of holy trinity in this context is culinary slang).

But what concerns me more about this as something offered as an example of our best content is the literary style of the piece. It consists of short, unlinked, simple predicate sentences, with no apparent thought to structure or order. Kevin McE (talk) 09:06, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tweaked the identified errors. As for general prose quality, feel free to edit the article or post to its talk page if that's a concern. Nikkimaria (talk) 21:53, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I realize that we've moved on to a different featured article, but for future reference, I must address the above statement that "peppers are a fruit, not a vegetable."
"Fruit" is a botanical classification, while "vegetable" is a culinary one, so the two are not mutually exclusive. As noted in our article, "bell peppers are botanically fruits, but are generally considered in culinary contexts to be vegetables." —David Levy 03:51, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The blurb for Second Ostend Raid probably should mention World War I somewhere. Zagalejo^^^ 18:22, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, and was just about to post here saying the same thing. Also acceptable would be 'the First World War' and 'the Great War', but currently the blurb fails to mention what war the battle was part of, and it should. I made the change here, but the article will be rotating off the main page in about 20 minutes, so rather late in the day. Is there a reason the above post wasn't acted on sooner? Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day

Also (as a person who reads this section daily) has anyone noticed the preponderance of articles on Byzantine/Eastern Empire History in this section? Other nations and periods, tend to be mentioned infrequently, or not at all (ancient African, Egyptian, Chinese, Indian, Aboriginal events?). Much of it seems to be rather Eurocentric. Jabberjawjapan (talk) 12:27, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is the use of different calendars. It hard to have confirmed dates for those other anniversaries. --PFHLai (talk) 13:46, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Byzantines are also famous for their meticulous record-keeping. There are known historical dates (to the day) for many events in Byzantine history, whilst similar events from the same time period in e.g. China, Japan, Iran, or even France and Britain often cannot be dated more accurately than the year they occurred, because no-one wrote it down and preserved that record. There are similar problems with events from Ancient Greek history, and even the early Roman Republic. Modest Genius talk 15:18, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Length of September 19

Is it just me, or does today's On this day seem rather long? OCNative (talk) 03:43, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A little longer: 1080 characters. Previous 10 days: 786, 690, 962, 756, 799, 670, 929, 1051, 855, and 799 characters, taking care to include and exclude the same parts each time. Art LaPella (talk) 04:14, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I noticed this, too, though perhaps it stands out more because DYK seems to be shorter than usual. I think that one of the items – probably the one about Vietnam (1964), whose significance is not readily apparent and which highlights an article that is tagged (a bit excessively, in my opinion) with several cleanup issues – should be removed. -- Black Falcon (talk) 04:19, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The next 10 days are trending higher: 880, 1008, 946, 1010, 956, 1240, 1036, 1085, 1073, 1028. Art LaPella (talk) 04:52, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was late in updating today's OTD. howcheng {chat} 04:55, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It looks better now, thank you. :) -- Black Falcon (talk) 05:52, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reporters: please first correct today's or tomorrow's regular version.
