Misleading to the extent of perpetrating a fraud edit of report in the 'Gardner Island" section

The article states: "For example, in 1940, Gerald Gallagher, a British colonial officer and licensed pilot, radioed his superiors to inform them that he had found a "skeleton... possibly that of a woman", along with an old-fashioned sextant box, under a tree . . ."

The entire message is the Epilogue to the book "Finding Amelia" by Ric Gillespie, Annapolis, MD, United States Naval Institute Press, 2006. The ENTIRE message from Officer-in-Charge, Pheonix Islands Settlement Scheme Gerald B. Gallagher to Resident Commissioner of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands Colony, Barley dated 23 September 1940 contraindicates the edited fragment.

It reads: "Some months ago working party on Gardner discovered human skull--this was buried and I only recently heard about it. Thourough search has now produced more bones (including lower jaw) part of a shoe a bottle and sextant box. It would appear that (a) Skeleton is possibly that of a woman, (b) Shoe was a woman's and probably size 10, (c) Sextant box has two numbers on it 3500 (stencilled) and 1542--sextant being old fashioned and probably painted over with black enamel.

Bones look more than four years old to me but there seems to be very slight chance that this may be remains of Amelia Erhardt [sic}. If United States authorities find that above evidence fits into general description, perhaps they could supply some dental information as many teeth are intact. Am holding latest finds for present but have not exhumed skull. There is no local indication that this discovery is related to wreck of the "Norwich City."

The Sextant box and sextant were not Noonan's. Nor does the 'very slight chance' that the bones were Amelia Erhart's match the intended purpose of the edit "skeleton... possibly that of a woman", along with an old-fashioned sextant box" provided in the article.

It should be noted that the author of the book "Finding Amelia" who chose to include as it's epilogue the ENTIRE message is Ric Gillespie, Executive Director of TIGHAR.

Amelia Earhart Did Not Crash and Sink at Howland Island According to Waitt Industries

Waitt Industries just finished a detailed underwater search for Earhart's Electra in the vicinity of Howland Island. This search combined with the Nauticos search several years proves beyond any question Earhart did not crash in the sea at Howland irrespective of the movie "Amelia" and the two TV specials several years ago. The Waitt Industries search was very thorough and had no budget limitations. This search also negates the Elgen Long book and the Susan Butler which claim Earhart crashed and sank at Howland Island. The mission covered 7,000 linear miles of ocean floor, generating a 2,200-square-mile mosaic, at an average depth of 5,200 meters using a pair of cutting-edge REMUS 6000 Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). The most sophisticated deep-sea search vehicles available today, these AUVs are pre-programmed to operate independently once released from the support ship. I saw the impressing and accurate results. However, the region of research was too much south of a point [with a circle of uncertainty , of course] which has been thouroughly recomputed as shown in European Journal of Navigation, July 2008 issue [also mentioned elsewhere on the discussion pages], by quantitative inquiry. The landing zone of aircraft was about 177 deg 19'W. - 01 deg 49'N. These coordinates are 85 mls off Howland Island to compass point 326 , 126 mls north of the equator, 186 mls east of the Greenwich lower meridian. If the aircraft has not been found in the search area of the immediate vicinity [50 X 50 sq.mls] of the island, i.e. the wreckage has not run into range of the robot instruments, it means that it was outside the grid. The sweeping statement made at the outset is belied by the actual data and report which does not claim any of the previous researchers' hypothesis and theories are wrong. The search area, as mentioned above, may be the questionable aspect of the investigation. FWiW, I have not seen any claims from Long or Butler that Earhart crashed on Howland; that is easily disproved, however, the surrounding ocean has certainly not been completely plumbed. At the depths one might expect in these waters, the degree of preservation is probably quite substantial. However by definition (no discovery) the search areas so far have been wrong. The data can be interpreted many ways, hence the controversy and lack of findings so far, but the general gist is that Amelia and Fred were at one point so close to Howland that their signal was very loud and clear, and then subsequently they were farther away and running north-south. General Tommy Watson who commanded the 2nd Marine Division during the assault on Saipan and stayed on that island after the fall of Okinawa, on one of my seven visits of inspection of his division told me that Miss Earhart met her death on Saipan. That is the total knowledge I have of this incident. Having known General Watson many years, I naturally accepted this information as being correct. General Watson, I am sorry to say, died some years ago and therefore cannot be contacted.

I am sorry if my remarks mislead you but I cannot add anything more to this report.

In any case, Saipan is DUE NORTH of Lae, New Guinea (AE's departure point for the Pacific crossing) and she was flying to the EAST in the general direction of Howland Island. So unless one supposes that both AE and FN were so stupid with navigation that they couldn't tell North from East (which is DEMONSTRABLY FALSE -- FN was a PROFESSIONAL NAVIGATOR, and AE had made a whole bunch of successful long-distance flights that ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED accurate navigation), there's ABSOLUTELY NO WAY they could've ended up on Saipan when flying toward Howland. TIGHAR coverage in Discovery magazine

Several of us have been deleting a new addition to the article, one which said "by 2010 TIGHAR had found evidence that Earhart might have spent months on Nikumaroro as a castaway." This conjecture is very weak, and does not belong in the article. Gwen Gale writes in an edit summary that "sourced conjecture, like the crash and sink theory, is very much allowed", but I must add that every bit of 'allowed' text must also pass through a consensus of editors who gauge its relevance and importance. We cannot make the Earhart article an organ of TIGHAR's musings—we must wait until they actually have something worth reporting. Binksternet (talk) 16:47, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here at Gwen Gale's talk page collection, Bzuk and she discussed the Discovery coverage contained in the article "Amelia Earhart May Have Survived Months as Castaway". Gale accused Bzuk of "wanton" PoV-pushing in the removal of this thin conjecture. On the contrary, I think it is POV-pushing to put extremely weak conjecture into the article, for the apparent purpose of keeping TIGHAR's activities in the foreground. This article is not the bulletin board for TIGHAR; it is the encyclopedia entry about Earhart. What we put here is the major evidence, the most prominent theories, everything that has been vetted by experts or has become notable from its coverage. An article such as the recent Discovery one which offers no substance is not important enough to include here. I've been watching this page for a long time and I am familiar with TIGHAR's explorations, etc. I've never had the impression that the use of TIGHAR's findings are there to support or push TIGHAR. Their expedition did uncover evidence that is consistent with Earhart being on that island. The heel remnant, the glass that fits a woman's compact of that era that she had with her, the curvature of the plexiglass that would match to the Electra, etc., do suggest that Earhart made a landing on Gardner Island and survived for a time. In addition, the triangulation of the continuing radio signals that were still being received by the Navy, suggests that she landed on Gardner/Nikumaroro safely with the gear down. In order to keep generating a signal, the propellers would have to be able to turn in order to replenish the battery/radio, etc., and that means the props would have to clear the ground. So the gear would have to be intact, which suggests a safe landing. These don't seem to me to be 'thin conjecture.'
I don't see any problem with Gwen Gale's edit, nor does it appear that she, or anybody I can see, is trying to push TIGHAR. Their's seems to be real evidence. Also, bones were found there, and the original pathology report suggested (later after a second look) they were a female's bones. And I don't see any sources that suggest another pilot was lost in the area at that time who might have left behind evidence of survival consistent with what matches what Earhart had with her at the time of flight.Malke2010 18:24, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No evidence was found linking Earhart to a campsite, just 100 samples were collected, some of which will be tested for DNA. The original pathology report is from 1940 and has long since been disputed because the bones have disappeared. None, I repeat none of TIGHAR's finds have been conclusively linked to Earhart. Who knows what the finds will reveal? So far, nothing with the very suspect radio signals simply another conjecture. Using Occam's razor as a basis, the simplest theory is she was lost, ran out of fuel and ditched in the ocean. I think applying Occam would hold sway if there weren't fragments of a shoe and plexiglass from an Electra, etc., as well as added to the fact that no others had gone missing in the area. Without any evidence, then yes, the simplest explanation would be lost at sea. But there is evidence that suggests survival of this particular person, and as I said, no others had been reported missing, who also had items consistent with the ones Earhart had with her. As regards the bones, finding a few bones suggests animal feeding caused the bones to be carried off. It is still possible that archaeologists, whom the TIGHAR group does use to excavate these sites, will eventually find more remains. Especially, as bones do not deteriorate like flesh.
Another way of stating Occam's Razor is 'when you hear hoof beats think horses not zebras.' Sometimes a cold is just a cold and not the Black Plague. But if the cold is contracted in an environment that supports rodents who test positive for plague, then perhaps you'll want to take a second look and run more tests. That there is evidence consistent with items that were known to be in Earhart's possession at the time of the flight, suggests to me that the zebra might be headed our way.
My main point, though, is that I do not see anybody editing to favor the TIGHAR group. And looking at the policy Gwen Gale cites, it seems to me she's on solid ground there. I don't think it hurts the article in any way to keep her edit.Malke2010 21:36, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The finds that M has described were not conclusively linked to an Electra, far from it, the plexiglass? (aluminum panel is what I recall) match was to another aircraft. (The Lockheed Electra has a definitive rivet pattern. We have one at our museum and the "Nikumaroro" underskin panel did not line up with any known Electra panels. A discovery of a panel removed after Earhart's plane was wrecked in Hawaii was matched up recently to authenticate the "Hawaii" panel. The match to the "Nikumaroro" panel was to a Consolidated PBY flying boat, not the Lockheed Electra 10E. We have the manuals for the Electra at the museum and it was clearly not at all a match according to the photos that I saw.) The shoe fragment could have belonged to anyone including other inhabitants or visitors as the island had a prior and post-Earhart history. Some areas to consider: all the preliminary sightings and radio messages show that the flight was destined for Howland with the fuel in the L10's tanks running low. Any further radio messages after the famous "We are on the line 157 337... We are running north south" cannot be authenticated. As to floating, the Electra is a notorious "sinker" with an estimated float time of only eight minutes, precluding any radio signals unless they were able to reach a landfall. Lockheed Electra 10 is not "a notorious sinker". F.A.A archives of the era contain at least 10 on sea landings with no major structural damage, but the for all cases before sinking period never exceeded 12 minutes. This however, is typical for all medium size twin engined aircraft like Siebel 204D1, Fokker S13 and later developed Cessna types : the with regard to the light metal fuselage high mass engines pull to the nose down position immediately after coming to a standstill. A Navy pilot made a fly-over of the island during the search and he reported signs of recent habitation on the island. However, he did not land, but he buzzed the island several times. Since nobody came out to the beach while he was there, he assumed nobody was there. Also, regarding the other findings I mentioned, you might be behind a bit on TIGHAR's research and findings. They have mentioned these on their website and they are in the videos of their expeditions. I'll try to find a video link if you are interested.Malke2010 23:05, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It seems we are discussing pre-2010 findings, not the recent trip by TIGHAR. The above-linked news item published online by Discovery is the topic of this thread, the recent June 2010 trip during which Ric Gillespie made a careful statement to Discovery with narrow conclusions based on observed evidence. He said, "there is evidence on the island suggesting that a castaway was there for weeks and possibly months". He also said, "on this expedition we have recovered nearly 100 objects", among which 10 are being tested by a Canadian lab for DNA. Does the lab have something known to be Earhart's for comparison? At any rate, Gillespie's conclusion about a castaway does not point to Earhart. Gillespie's gathering of 100 objects does not constitute evidence. Nothing new was achieved in the recent trip. Because of this lack, nothing of the trip need appear in the article here. If the Canadian DNA testing brings up a match, that will be news fit for publishing here. This edit of Gwen's should be allowed to remain: [1] as it does meet this. I don't understand the conclusion that 'nothing was achieved in the recent trip.' The finding and collection of 100 items seems like a fruitful trip to me. And mitochondrial DNA can be retrieved from items people have touched. Also, comparison to DNA from a parent's remains would make a definitive match. It wouldn't have to rely on having Earhart's personal belongings. I'm not posting my original research, Gwen Gale—I'm questioning your synthesis and the weight that this news item bears in relation to our Earhart article. In the new item, TIGHAR's Gillespie never mentions Earhart... it is the article's author, Rossella Lorenzi, a non-notable staffer at Discovery News, who makes conclusions about Earhart. That means the first version of the Gwen Gale addition is a misleading synthesis of two parts into one: "By 2010 TIGHAR had found evidence that Earhart might have spent months on Nikumaroro as a castaway." TIGHAR found stuff about the possibility of castaways, Lorenzi made the leap to Earhart. We should not put Lorenzi's conclusions into a form that makes it seem TIGHAR proclaimed them. Bzuk's next modification transformed the sentence into a purely accurate one but thus made it irrelevant to our encyclopedia article about Earhart: "By 2010 TIGHAR had found evidence that a castaway may have spent months on Nikumaroro." If they are not specifically tied to Earhart, TIGHAR's findings do not belong here.
I have no problems with WP:Verifiability—I can see quite clearly that the item made it into Discovery's online news area. What I insist upon is that additions from TIGHAR have the appropriate WP:Weight in terms of the big picture, and that we do not introduce inconsequential news items just because they got published. When and if somebody electrifies the world by showing a major new clue about Earhart's disappearance, we will have something juicy to add. Periodic updates about TIGHAR's activities saying that some collected objects are being tested, the update filled with conjecture by one journalist? We don't need that trivia. WP:WEIGHT does not say verifiable content cited to a reliable source can be blanked by an editor because it doesn't fit that editor's own notion of "the big picture." As for an editor saying they "insist" on any editorial content (or lack) here, that sounds a lot more to me like tendentious editing than NPoV. WP:WEIGHT says "It is important to clarify that articles should not give minority views as much or as detailed a description as more widely held views." An expedition that did not recover world-class evidence falls through the cracks as unimportant. We do not need to give TIGHAR more coverage than they had previously, especially since nothing major was determined (so far) on the 2010 expedition. Let's wait until the Canadian lab finds a DNA match to trumpet the findings. I am not a tendentious editor; I have added quite a lot of solid, cited text to various articles, and I have kept trivia from many more. You should know better than to argue that a small addition to a over-large article is not undue weight—it is unimportant non-news that should not be allowed to make the article even larger. It is wholly unnecessary.
Regarding authority in the news item: the story carries no conjecture by Gillespie, your recognized authority. Gillespie is much more careful than that in the quoted bits. All the conjecture is by Lorenzi, the staffer at Discovery News.
Once again, text that is 'allowed' is not text that should automatically be included here. We look at WP:V and WP:NPOV and we determine how relevant the text is to the article. G and M, On the contrary, I had made a number of revisions to try to keep the original edit in place, feeling that the title of the article clearly indicated the belief that the author of the article had that Earhart could have been the castaway on Nikumaroro. Other editor(s) challenged or changed the edit further. I have read and re-read the article numerous times and I can't see the leap-of-faith/logic that actually makes the discovery of a campsite link to Earhart as the reputed castaway. Gillespie doesn't make that claim; however, if the DNA results come back as positive, then there is a story here. Right now, it appears to be another of the "what if" accounts. I still don't understand the opposition. It's a simple edit that Earhart might have made it to Gardner Island and there is evidence of a survivor that might have been her. There are reliable sources and it is noteworthy as her disappearance is one of the great mysteries in 20th century world history, not just American history. TIGHAR is not claiming it was Earhart, the claim is that it might have been and they have items similiar to items she was known to have in her possession. The journalist makes the supposition, although it is likely a "nudge-nudge-wink-wink" account by Gillespie that suggests Earhart is the castaway. The find was a campsite, believed to be used in the past. How this jumps to being Earhart being marooned on the island as a castaway is entirely "blue sky" deduction. Every few years Gillespie goes to Gardner and finds new 'proof' which provide TIGHAR with headlines which produce funding. After the smoke settles the 'proof' turns out to be junk. Gillespie makes it seem that the site was never occupied and there is no other possible explanation. Gardner Island was the location of LORAN Unit 92 from 1944 to 1946. The station had call sign NRN-2 and was a Double MASTER (DM) station with pairs (2L4 and 2L5) on Baker and Atafu. Anyone understand how pieces of a PBY and plexiglass might be found there? Or how various bits of 'wreckage' might have been found? Why were these things not found by the men of Construction Detachment "D" during the six months required to build the station? Even though they didn't become as famous as Lindbergh or Earhart (for a simple reason -- they didn't make as many pioneering flights), the one "first" that they did make was a very important achievement in the history of aviation, and deserves to be recognized as such. Date error?

In the section "Early flying experiences", it says that Amelia went on a flight on December 28, 1920 and began saving up for flying lessons. It then says that when she reached $1000, she took her first lesson, on January 3, 1921. That's only six days; could she really have gotten several jobs and worked to reach $1000 in just six days? Possible finger bone

I removed a news item in which publicity-hungry TIGHAR reports to MSNBC that they have a couple of bone fragments which could be human. Must be a slow day at the news factory... Ric Gillespie says "At first we assumed it was from the turtle whose remains we found nearby. Indeed, sea turtles have finger bones in their flippers. But further research suggests it could also be human." Gillespie has no idea yet whether the bone is turtle or human or whatever, let alone the finger bone of Earhart. Gillespie says "We know that none of the hand bones of the castaway were found in 1940. Could that bone be a human finger?" Deeper in the article it says:

"Forensic anthropologist Karen Ramey Burns, a specialist in the identification of human remains, examined the phalanx. She could not say with certainty that it was or was not human ... The mystery will be soon solved when the finger bone is examined at the Molecular Science Laboratories at Oklahoma University."

This supposed news item is another puff piece PR bit more about TIGHAR than Earhart. It does not belong here in this article at all. Even if an independent test lab confirms that it is a human bone, they cannot confirm it was Earhart's. Until the test results are reported on and commented on, this news item is premature. You quoted OR and V back then, too, but the upshot was that the article did not need any of TIGHAR's lame news items unless the basic truth about Earhart is changed. In this case, as before, the Earhart truth is not yet changed. You ought to consider writing an article about TIGHAR so that their public relations output can have a possible home, if the news can be shown to be important to TIGHAR. However, this news item is not important in any way to Earhart. It is a violation of WP:NOTNEWS, as was the similar PR piece back in June. We here have no responsibility to help TIGHAR obtain fame or funding; our mission is to tell the reader as much about Earhart as is known. If you look through the talk archives I yield not an inch to unnecessary TIGHAR publicity; I make plain that I think they are self-serving rather than truth-serving. Here in this thread I wrote "publicity-hungry TIGHAR", which is enough to raise a TIGHAR fan's hackles. Gwen's history through these talk pages is very TIGHAR friendly, so we are on opposite sides of that divide. Both of us hold a point of view on the topic. Nonetheless, we have both been able to edit beyond our biases and work together to make this article a good example of reliability and verifiability on Wikipedia—a difficult proposition considering all the theories out there about what happened to her. I feel confident we can all work together to judge this new bit from MSNBC.
The guideline at WP:NOTNEWS keeps coming up on this talk page because TIGHAR keeps putting out press releases with conjecture about Earhart. I do share and support the opinion that these news about TIGHAR's claims and efforts must not be included into the article about Amelia Earhart until they will be positively confirmed. The TIGHAR organization released many claims and presented many findings as if related to Earhart during last two decades but they were never positively confirmed; meanwhile numerous skeptic arguments were systematically neglected and ignored. At these condition I can't see a rational reason to transform the article (or some part of it) into the TIGHAR's "newsline", in any form. When the TIGHAR's finding will be confirmed as really related to Earhart (if ever), it would be fair and logical to include them. But not before that would happen. Just my opinion. Don't make this about edit warring when what you are after is a change in content. The guideline at WP:WEIGHT gives the editors here leeway to consider the MSNBC news item. We are enjoined by the guideline to represent fairly "all significant viewpoints ...in proportion to the prominence of each". The viewpoint of TIGHAR is that Earhart ended her days on Gardner. We have written about that viewpoint in the article, with proper proportion. That viewpoint has not been changed by the news item. Gwen Gale is a hobby horse rider who edits reports which do not suit her personal passion. That the "Compass Box" could not have been Noonan's and the compass it contained was definitely not one which he had on the flight does not suffice to prevent it's mention. Nor does Gale allow the complete "Gallagher" message to be posted instead of the few choice (and deceptive) words she prefers. The entire message is less than a page, and it is the Epilogue of TIGHAR honcho Ric Gillespie's book "Finding Amelia." This she censors, despite the fact that Mr. Gillespie felt it necessary to include it as the final word of a book he wrote to promote the TIGHAR theory. Mr. Gillespie is an honest historian, even when pushing his pet theory. He for example starts his book by discrediting one of the primary 'sources' he uses for alleged radio messages from Earhart after the fuel exhaustion time of the Electra. Perhaps Mr. Gillespie hoped that people would forget his impeachment of the source by the time he made it a cornerstone of his argument. Perhaps he hoped folks would not read the Epilogue. He was honest enough to include both.

Aviatrix?

I have not heard this word used ever. Granted that's only anecdotal, however when I see "aviatrix" I get the impression that the emphasis is taken off the individual and placed more on the gender. Not quite sure I agree with that, as it should not matter if one is male or female when it pertains to things that are not intrinsically reliant on gender. The "aviatrix" in question would be an aviator whether they were male or female. As well, the word itself I would think would seem somewhat diminishing to women. Just sounds... off. Further in the matter I note that no-one seems to have made allowances for the way in which an aircraft can sink and the extent to which they can "plane away" i.e. develop a considerable horizontal vector as they fall through the water. The Titanic's bow section actually moved horizontally something like half a mile in falling just 2.4 miles, representing a deviation from the vertical of 12 degrees; an aircraft designed to do just that, to plane as fluid rushes over the wings, could move horizontally by a far greater distance. A deviation from the vertical of 55 degrees, for example, would mean a horizontal displacement of 26,000 feet (4.9 miles) during an 18,000 feet (3.4 miles) vertical fall. Note their probable southerly progress starting from the immediate Howland area. Saw her first aircraft in '1908'?

I added a Citation needed for this sentence. The article states Earhart saw her first aircraft in 1908 at Iowa State Fair in Des Moine. It says aircraft, not 'airplane', which could mean she may have seen a dirigible, more common in 1908 than airplanes. The article also says that the aircraft was an 'old flivver'. Any flyable airplane in 1908 was high technology. Most Americans had not yet publicly seen an airplane in 1908 and they were not common anywhere in the world with the possible exception of France. So I believe the dates are off where Earhart had seen her first plane at Iowa State Fair, Des Moine, which the first may have taken place in 1911 or 1912. Discuss. Just to clear this up, it was an "aeroplane" or "airplane," if you must. She was asked by her father if she wanted to go for a ride, and she declined as it was "a thing of rusty wire and wood."(Goldstein and Dillon 1997, p. 14 and also Morrissey 1963, pp. 17–18) Hardly a "cutting-edge" technology on display, the first traveling air itinerants often consisted of pilots from the Curtiss Aeroplane company whose escapades led to crashes and hasty repairs to their Curtiss Model Ds on their meandering over North America, as well as many "garage mechanics" of the era whose contraptions were far from the height of technology. Her sister, Muriel indicates that Amelia was 10 at the time of the encounter with a "flivver" which was the contemporary slang term for the early pioneering aircraft as well as automobiles. Electra endurance - why not mentioned in the article?

I can't find any reference to the endurance of the Electra 10E in the Earhart article. Is there a particular reason for this? I know about the disputes about how much fuel could have been remaining when the aircraft was in close proximity to Howland, but what is not in much if any doubt is the timings of the Lae departure and the "arrival" at Howland. Based on the 1100 US gal of fuel on board giving a maximum 24 hour endurance, the known flight times suggest that as much as 3.5 hours further flight was possible. Can anyone state categorically why this information isn't included? If it were then it provides additional explanation of why the Gardner hypothesis exists and how further radio transmissions might have been made if an engine could still be run after the suggested reef landing. This article is a summary of Earhart's life, not a piece-by-piece breakdown of what went wrong on the last flight she took. I think it is enough to quote experts who briefly mention the fuel situation. Roy Nesbit does not think the Electra was fully fueled. Elgen Long thinks the fuel and other evidence points to Gardner. These two are plenty as they voice the main two arguments. Further details are not necessary; the curious reader can buy a book or two.

Endurance and Range are not synonymous. The maximum 'endurance' of an aircraft is usually figured upon optimum lean cruise airspeed. Range is usually figured based upon 'Still Air', which is to say no winds.

An aircraft is moving in a fluid which itself is moving. In the case of the Electra 10E, it was against prevailing and actual winds of significant force. The difference in 'range' i.e. the distance over ground, and the distance actually flown through the air may be VERY significant. in the case of a very long distance flight the ACTUAL distance flown through the air may exceed the theoretical range possible at the cruise speed/power settings for maximum endurance. Headwinds may require an increase of airspeed to make sufficient distance over the ground to reach the destination before fuel exhaustion.

The theoretical endurance of the Electra 10A is of little significance. Nor for that matter is the distance between two points on the globe.

Anyone who has flown has had a laugh reading the 'specifications' presented for aircraft. The numbers given are often mutually exclusive. The range is often for ferry in still air. The payload is often maximum which would preclude full tanks. The speeds are clean under perfect conditions. The F-00 might be able to go a zillion miles per hour, fly a distance of a million miles, achieve a maximum altitude of almost infinity, and carry an impressive load. It cannot, however, do more than one at a time. Citing the 'maximum speed' of an airliner is purile as what matters is it's cruising speed (or now days mach number which may amount to different True Air Speeds depending upon density altitude)

The article is about a person's life and career. It is not just about a navigation problem, nor the theoretical capabilities of the aircraft.

Since Toluca Lake is an enclave for many famous celebrities that was created by Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Amelia Earhart, Frank Sinatra and others, its standing as a unique place of residency for celebrities and studio moguls is fairly well known. It continues to be one of the most desirable locations in Los Angeles Country, and home to many famous celebrities, including Steve Carrell, Kirsten Dunst, Rick Dees, Zac Efron, Andy Garcia, Miley Cirus, Jennifer Love Hewitt, the Jonas Brothers, Hilary Duff, Ashley Tisdale, Swoosie Kurtz, Denzel Washington, Joel David Moore, Garry Marshall, Demi Lovato, etc. That she was one of the very first residents of this unique town and lived in the first house built seems relevant. Rather than a deletion, the statement was placed into an "editor's note" with an invisible note asking to address the issue of possible spamming. Since a number of other Toluca Lake edits have been recently made, there is always some concern that a commercial site or perhaps a crusader is behind the "campaign." That's ok for the Toluca Lake article. This is the AE article. Any named human settlement on earth, down to a gathering of only a few dwellings of any kind, is notable enough for an article on en.WP. Toluca Lake in 2011 isn't at all notable to this topic. TL in 1937 is maybe notable enough for an adjective or two but no more. Gwen Gale, I'd like to clarify that I am not connected in any way whatsoever to the Toluca Lake Chamber of Commerce or any realty company of any kind. The reason there were so many entries added is that there was previously a list of famous residents on the Toluca Lake article page that seemed appropriate but was removed. When I queried the removal, I was told by an editor to create a Category page and add this to the bottom of each name. Then I was told by another editor this was the wrong approach, that each article needed to have its own mention. This makes sense. So, while trying to comply with this directive, it is now being suggested I am spamming. This seems a bit harsh, although I do understand how looking at the number of entries this incorrect assumption might be made. For those unfamiliar with the area, Toluca Lake is indeed a unique enclave of celebrities and movie studio moguls, practically a colony, that started with people like Bob Hope and Amelia Earhart and continues to this day. The latest edits are largely fanciful and deal with the reasoning behind why Earhart moved to Toluca Lake. In 1934, Earhart had stayed with the Mantz family during a trying period when Paul Mantz was seeking a divorce. George Putnam resented the close relationship that was developing as Amelia had sought out Mantz, a Hollywood stunt pilot and later air racer, but also a recognized aviation expert for "advanced training" in her Vega to build up her expertise in long distance flying. He pitched the idea to her that a flight training school with her name behind it would be successful. The Earhart-Mantz enterprise only lasted a few months but in the preliminary negotiations, Earhart had insisted that a move to Toluca Lake would be the best way to keep in contact. Putnam was not in favor of the move as rumors had already circulated that the two "business" partners were an item, and he did not want to support the flying school, as he already had planned out the next moves in his campaign to keep his wife in the public eye. The way this is now written, although technically correct, makes it seem like the reason for the move was because of the proximity of the Lockheed factory and the Hollywood studios. The mention of the close proximity of the two well known studios (WB and Universal) serves to identify where the relatively small celebrity enclave community of Toluca Lake is located within the vastness of the San Fernando Valley. It is not meant to not imply anything about Earhart's and Putnam's reasons for moving to the community other than to state that they had settled in an exclusive community populated largely by well known movie and show people. The mention of the Lockheed factory at Burbank Airport is also a relevant bit of information because both Earhart's Vega and Electra were built in the plant that shared the airfield with Mantz's operation as well as being where Earhart often hangared the Electra. While this passage is silent as to whether or not the proximity of the Lockheed plant was also a consideration in their moving to Toluca Lake, the information that it is there, that's where her two airplanes were built, and that Earhart kept the Electra at the field is certainly accurate, significant, relevant, and properly sourced. Neither the film studios nor the airport had anything to do with the move to Toluca Park by the Putnams. The wikilink readily identifies the location of the community. The repeated mention of where the aircraft was built or housed is also unnecessary and redundant. If that is essential, it should be located in a section that makes more of a chronological connection. The Vega Model 1 (#B9314) was built in January 1929, exchanged for an earlier Model 1 built in 1928, that Earhart only briefly flew, which in turn was traded for an earlier 1928-vintage Vega 5 that has a more convoluted history as it ended up a 5B. There was a recent History Channel broadcast that stated that aviatrix Earhart and navigator Noonan deliberately left their lifejackets and other life saving equipment at Lae to load more fuel. Engines

Several years ago there was an American article, unfortunately I cannot now remember the source, which stated that the Earhart Electra had at some later stage been fitted with more powerful engines than the production model.

If this burned more fuel than the standard engines could this be why Earhart and Noonan left their life saving gear behind to load more fuel? It appears to be on the heels of the conspiracy theories that made out that the Lockheed Electra Model 10 was swapped for the experimental XC-35 pressurized research model powered by turbocharged Pratt & Whitney XR-1340-43, 550 hp (410 kW) each. The entirely speculative musing was without the slightest proof that this was possible, but it fuelled the "spy" theory. I removed the claim about use of Earhart's image in an Apple ad campaign. The cited page did not mention Earhart one time and the page only contains one small, non-captioned picture of her. The source is there to indicate the significance of the "Think Different" campaign, states it was an award-winning campaign and has reached cult-like status. The earlier references by Kristen Lubben and Erin Barnett from Amelia Earhart: Image and Icon (2007) deal specifically with the Gap, Apple and other advertising ventures. I suspect somewhere in the edit history, the shift from the citation took place, including the removal of the "Think Different" image which may have had its own reference source. FWiW, a revised statement is now provided. Any illusion to the iconic nature of the Earhart image from the Apple campaign, will be resolved by trying to purchase a used copy of the 2002 print ad from Ebay. Like the overwhelming majority of Trivia sections, virtually all the entries in this one should be removed. Earhart was one of my childhood heroes, and one of the reasons I learned to fly. I want her article to be as good as it can be. Wouldn't it be great to have it be a GA or FA? If you have read Amelia Earhart: Image and Icon which is an entire book devoted to her as an icon, Earhart transcends much of the popular culture benchmarks. She launched contemporary advertising campaigns including her clothing, travel and other lines which revolved around her public persona of a daring aviatrix and female role model. She did often eschew the advertising claims such as the tobacco ads, and often GP was the originator of the "selling" of the Earhart image, in the ethereal sense. I have no great compulsion to keep the section as a part of the article but would recommend its becoming a "daughter" article tied to the main body. This issue is a long-standing one and has been the cause of some discussion before. The attempt, for example, to move the contentious "theory" section into a sub-article was soundly defeated by consensus as it was felt to be part of the story of Earhart ... and as much as the mystery surrounding her death is part of her ever-lasting fame, so is her becoming one of the first female icons, which the aforementioned section has detailed, somewhat exhaustively. Over the course of time, many items in this section have been "culled" and the pruning still continues, as seen in the latest revision. Rather than "cheapening" her reputation, the very nature of so many tributes and honours (note: I write in Canajan) has heightened her public status to this day. Advertising was a key aspect of selling an image, and even in death, the Earhart image was shamelessly used, not through licensed images but merely by every advertiser who wished to exploit an iconic American figure. Luben makes the case that "Amelia Earhart is among those rare celebrities who are as familiar today as they were in their own time." She goes on in an extensive introduction to a groundbreaking work on the Earhart mystique to describe the impact of two advertising campaigns, the Gap ads and Apple's "Think Different". The images were not licensed works but were obtained from the museum collections of the International Center of Photography. Unless you can make a case that these advertising campaigns should not be mentioned, despite a massive tone devoted entirely to the image and iconic status of Earhart, which establishes that the two aforementioned campaigns are central to the modern revival of the Earhart story, then the constant reversals have to stop. As to the invisible notes and the claim that most of the submissions that are connected to the notes should remain, again, the onus is to find authoritative and verifiable sources that validate the statements, which was done with the aspect of advertising. Bill, you seem really insistent on this trivia being included here, so much so that you're reverting other editors' work without discussing it. The well-sourced, pertinent trivia really should be incorporated into the article text or removed. The seemingly endless lists--seen in many WP pages--of "X is in this video game", "X is in this episode of Y", or "X is mentioned in a song by Y" are not encyclopedic and should not be here--they are not about her, they are about some agency, band, or author using her name or likeness. As is plainly spelled out in WP:NOT, WP articles should not include everything about a particular subject.
It is the responsibility of an editor adding something to ensure it is notable, verifiable, and follows WP policies.
Conversely, it is the responsibility of editors encountering content contrary to WP guidelines to remove it and, if necessary, discuss it to reach consensus.
(Convention is, BTW, to move contested text to the Talk page for discussion, not to leave it in the article in the form of HTML comments. Not doing so tends to cause confusion, as just happened with Collect's edits.)
The way this is supposed to work is Bold-Revert-Discuss: when a disagreement arises, editors stop messing with the article and discuss the situation on the Talk page. You seem intent on protecting the Earhart article, and that is commendable, but none of us "own" it. I really want to work with you on this, but I'm unwilling to ignore WP guidelines. The trivia section must be eliminated or drastically reduced. I won't edit-war, though, and if I must take this issue to one of the administrative boards, I will.

Note:BRD is exactly what was involved; You placed a tag, another editor, removed a section, I reverted and took the issue to this talk page. The edit was then removed, I added edit comments to move the issue back to this forum, and tried to provide the rationale why a statement about advertising is significant to the Earhart story. The publication of an entire book on this subject that actually identifies the two modern ad campaigns as being critical in a reassessment of an iconic historical figure, should be regarded as notable.
As stated earlier, there are lots to do in looking at the article's list of popular culture connections. What someone may consider trivial, is not the same to the editor who made the original entry. I have no issue in having the entire list moved to a sub-article if needed, but, at present, the list is chopped into half to the reader, leaving only the items that had some references in place or were likely to have some notability established such as the Joni Mitchell mention. Excising submissions, regardless of who made the edit, is not necessary, but the list to the observer is reduced, a tag is placed in edit mode for editors to find a reference source or establish notability but that typically is there for other editors or the original contributor to make an effort to find authoritative sources to verify the edit's notability. In most cases, there may be a case to be made, but that is up to editors to do, given a reasonable amount of time to deal with individual submissions. On a personal note, I am unable to understand reasoning behind the type of comments above, as they seem to be of a personal nature. A question was posed to seriously reduce this section or even eliminating it as a list, and instead incorporating where possible the content as prose into the body of the article. FWiW, the issue of a modern revival of Earhart in advertising was based on the success of two main advertising campaigns and has led to a major exhibition recently at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Quoting from the book that came from the exhibition, the book is "dedicated to nurturing the understanding of societal perceptions that photo-journalism exhalts onto contemporary cultures by shaping the development, substance and subsistence of remembrances - in this case, the creation and adulation of recognizable contributions by one of its own citizens whose ingredients were close to perfect, importantly possession of humility and tireless devotion to the matters at hand. Each of the essayists focuses on a unique trait of AE: - symbolism, individuality, and true grit." As said earlier, I am prepared to rewrite a great deal of the popular culture section into the section on the Earhart legacy, and within that legacy, I believe are many of the current dedications and tributes to her made in popular culture, but I can see that a modern reappraisal of Earhart in advertising can also fit into her own, earlier ventures into this arena. Celebrity image

In the aftermath of her 1929 transatlantic flight, trading on her physical resemblance to Charles Lindbergh, whom the press had dubbed "Lucky Lindy," some newspapers and magazines began referring to Earhart as "Lady Lindy." The United Press was more grandiloquent; to them, Earhart was the reigning "Queen of the Air." Immediately after her return to the United States, she undertook an exhausting lecture tour (1928–1929). Meanwhile, Putnam had undertaken to heavily promote her in a campaign including publishing a book she authored, a series of new lecture tours and using pictures of her in mass market endorsements for products including luggage, Lucky Strike cigarettes (this caused image problems for her, with McCall's magazine retracting an offer and women's clothing and sportswear. The money that she made with "Lucky Strike" had been earmarked for a $1,500 donation to Commander Richard Byrd's imminent South Pole expedition.

Rather than simply endorsing the products, Earhart actively became involved in the promotions, especially in women's fashions. For a number of years she had sewn her own clothes, but the "active living" lines that were sold in 50 stores such as Macy's in metropolitan areas were an expression of a new Earhart image. Her concept of simple, natural lines matched with wrinkle-proof, washable materials was the embodiment of a sleek, purposeful but feminine "A.E." (the familiar name she went by with family and friends). The luggage line that she promoted (marketed as Modernaire Earhart Luggage) also bore her unmistakable stamp. She ensured that the luggage met the demands of air travel; it is still being produced today.

The marketing campaign by both Earhart and G.P. Putnam was successful in establishing the Earhart mystique in the public psyche. A wide range of promotional items would appear bearing the Earhart "image" and likewise, modern equivalents are still being marketed to this day. A more recent Gap khaki pants ad campaign (1993) featured Amelia Earhart's likeness, and was the progenitor of additional modern revivals of her in advertising campaigns, including Apple Computer's "Think Different" advertising campaign (1997). The inclusion of a webcomic as an example of the popular culture impact of Amelia Earhart is a problematic one. Even though the original submission had no connecting reference, it was very quickly provided, from a fairly reputable source. This reference was removed, the reason being "single episodes are generally not considered significant". Is this the case? I was about to add the reference when I saw it commented out with this explanation. Notablity of social/electronic media references

The inclusion of a webcomic as an example of the popular culture impact of Amelia Earhart is a problematic one. Even though the original submission had no connecting reference, it was very quickly provided, from a fairly reputable source. Is a "webcomic" of sufficient import to be mentioned in this article? Note that we do not list the several hundred books which mention Earhart as part of their plot, nor do we list the thousands of books mentioning her otherwise. Amelia Earhart in Media (Mike Oldfield)

Mike Oldfield wrote a song called "5 Miles Out". While some cite the lyrics to be about Mike's own near-death experience during an undocumented flight, the song is more generally considered to be about Amelia Earhart. The album itself (containing the song) is also named "5 Miles Out", and the cover of the album shows a vintage Lockheed Model 10 Electra aircraft (with similar markings to the one flown by Amelia Earhart in 1937) flying through a bank of clouds.
