Edgefield is a town in Edgefield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 4,750 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Edgefield CountyTemplate:GR.
Edgefield is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area.
Geography
Edgefield is located at 33°47′N 81°56′W / 33.783°N 81.933°W (33.7868, -81.9278)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (11 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (11 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (1.93%) is water.
History
Edgefield suffered a devastating fire in late October 1881 with damages of $110,000.[1]
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 4,449 people, 1,080 households, and 697 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,094.3 people per square mile (422.1/km²). There were 1,229 housing units at an average density of 302.3 per square mile (116.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 38.82% White, 59.92% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.47% of the population.
There were 1,080 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% were married couples living together, 23.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the town the population was spread out with 14.1% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 44.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 195.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 221.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $24,977, and the median income for a family was $30,721. Males had a median income of $25,478 versus $23,462 for females. The per capita income for the town was $8,125. About 20.7% of families and 25.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.1% of those under age 18 and 23.2% of those age 65 or over.
Government
The Federal Bureau of Prisons Federal Correctional Institution, Edgefield is in Edgefield County; it is partially within the city limits of Edgefield, and partially in an unincorporated area.[2][3]
