Re: Olympic barnstar

Sure, I'd be happy to design one. I'm about to call it quits for tonight though, so I'll see what I can do tomorrow. :) Cheers, Sango123 02:54, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like it would be a good idea, but twice (mine included) the idea was shot down. Mainly, I think this was because of the fact that the Olympic rings are a fair use image. If someone could think of a better way to create an Olympic barnstar without the rings, that'd be great and would make a wonderful proposal. For now, though, I'm not so sure that it'd work. Please, though, give it a try if at all possible! JARED(t)17:35, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am aware of the previous discussions and was thinking of using an Olympic Flame instead of the rings. The Running Man Barnstar already covers work in sports, but this could probably serve as an award for WikiProject Sports Olympics. Sango123 18:15, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure about deletion

Blnguyen-

My entry was deleted by you and I'm inquiring as to further explination of why. I am genuine and forthright with my entry and not sure why it warrents deletion. The reason states that it is a random group of people, which is true (even though I'm not sure why random). Why does a group of people not warrent an entry? I've updated with more references that I believe make it a more contributing entry to Wiki. Any insights would be helpful. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nordexpress (talkcontribs)

For both your vote of support in my RfA and your kind words on my talk page just now! I wanted to close the rest of June 17 AfDs but gotta go AFK now. I'll give you and other sysops the honours.

Thanks! At first I didn't notice you awarded me the award. It was a nice surprise, and maybe I needed it after days and days spent in checking the style of willingful but not-so-styilish users (it seems that a few people read encyclopedias in this world...). A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm not sure that the page is ready to be unlocked completely - no one seems to be talking on the talk page. However I was wondering if I could propose adding a little content. If you would be willing could you please insert something and then lock it again? It's just a comment by one of the academics that is already listed at the bottom, but I realised his comments were never added to the "debate" section, which is a bit of an oversight. Can you tell me what you think? If I ask for it to be unlocked the whole edit war will start up again, I'm quite sure of that. John Smith's 14:43, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that you reverted vandalism by user:Janx Jrotum of the Windham County, Vermont article. Please be advised, this person is now using the name user:Hirenon Krubi. This individual has revandalized that page as well as a number of other Vermont related articles. I'm going through and reverting them, and have placed a notice on his or her talk page, but given that this individual has already been blocked under the previous name, he or she will probably be back. A page move, when you get the chance

Just wondering if you could rename Love, Shine a Light to "Love Shine A Light". There's no comma in any of the sources I've consulted, and the capitalisation will standardise it with the other songs in that category. I've tried to rename it myself, but there seems to be something stopping me. BigHaz 09:47, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've done the move, to Love Shine a Light. It was not possible for a non-sysop to do because BigHaz edited the target page when it was a redirect (as a result of a move to the comma version). Kimchi.sg 10:03, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Ball Stopping" deletion

Hi!

I wonder why did you delete the "Ball Stopping" entry.

Ariel Schapiro ("Ball Stopping" entry creator)

The reason was that it was proposed for deletion with {{prod}} for five days without objection, so it was removed under the deletion policy.Blnguyen | rant-line 23:21, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ball Stopping Re-Creation

Hi Blnguyen, Just created the Ball Stopping entry again, hoping to know the reason of the deletion proposal.

Thanks for your quick answer!!! Ariel Schapiro.

Thanks for the callup, I have done a major revert and explained my opinion on the talk page. But I feel this is by no means the end of it as the person who added the section Atrocities against muslims seems to have put a bit of writing effort into it. I expect my revert to be reverted. Nobleeagle (Talk) 01:58, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I think your page could do with an archive... :) Nobleeagle (Talk) 01:59, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: I removed your 48 hour block to impose a longer one. In my opinion, there is no reason for us to tolerate someone who is clearly a returning vandal who is using intentionally profane edit summaries. Wikibofh(talk) 03:33, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have a major problem with blocks like this. There is no actual evidence that this is a returning vandal. And by blocking an IP that is probably dynamic or shared for a month, you are creating a large possibility for collateral damage. --Woohookitty(meow) 08:38, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You can change it if you want then - I'm a dunce with IP technics - so do as you please with the technical details.Blnguyen | rant-line 08:41, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well with IPs, you have 3 types. You have static IPs. Those are folks who are on the same IP address every time they logon. Those are easy to spot because they generally edit the same articles over and over again. People using cable modems or DSLs are usually static.
Then you have shared IPs. These are often at schools. Several students share the exact same IP address. So blocking the IP blocks every user using the IP from editing. 90% of the time, the talk page of the IP user says it's from such and such a school. This almost always means shared IP.
Finally, you have dynamic IPs. With them, their IP # changes every time they go online...and with AOL and other ISPs, it'll even change while they are online. These you can spot by either looking at the talk page (where it says it's from an ISP or whatever). Or the other clue is an edit history with edits to totally different articles. The problem with blocking dynamic IPs for longer than say an hour or 3 hours is that once that vandal logs off, his IP is assigned to a different person. So if you block the IP for longer than a few hours, you are probably stopping legit editors.
If you have any questions, let me know. I'm not an expert either. Just knowing the difference between the 3 types will help you out alot as a new admin. I mean, blocking an IP that might be dynamic or shared for 1 week could literally be blocking 40-50 users (or more) from editing. We can always block longer later. --Woohookitty(meow) 08:54, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For the barnstar, I will treasure it. It was so nice after the previous discourse. Thanks again. .--Dakota ~ 05:34, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shadowclan -- Deleted

Thank you for the quick response, Blnguyen,

Could you please direct me to the appropriate guidelines I need to follow in order to recreate the Shadowclan article so that it will not be deleted again?

--Bagginator 08:22, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You said I have to claim importance. In order to help me properly re-create the Shadowclan page, could you be more specific and direct me to the General Criteria # for speedy deletion that I violated? Specifically I was trying to create a page similar to ones that already exist here on Wikipedia, such as Winters End and MIT Assassins. Thanks again for any response.

--Bagginator 08:42, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blnguyen,

Is it possible for me to retrieve the original page, add some information in order to help it meet the criteria necessary to keep it from being deleted? Also, if that is not possible, is there any objection at my attempting to recreate the article in a way that meets Wikipedia standards?

Contribution

Hi

I see you decided to delete my contribution ("Heartline") about a UK group with whom I have no connection beyond admiring their work. I'm sorry that you did that - I thought one was able to make any contribution to the collection of knowledge on Wikipedia that might be of value to others.

I wonder if you'd care to let me know why you decided that this course of action was appropriate.

Ian

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Ian Neal (talkcontribs)

Hello Ian, I deleted it because Blue520 (talk · contribs) proposed for it to be deleted via {{prod}} template for the stated reason "Notability, fails to show or assert verified notability to the levels outlined by WP:MUSIC." I'm guessing the main problem was that they didn't explain that the group had done international tours/ released CDs or did well in the charts, which are a general criteria for the inclusion of music groups on wikipedia.Blnguyen | rant-line 00:13, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Space Trek

I'm wondering how those lists qualify as empty?

As the criterion put it, "It is a very short article providing little or no context (CSD A1)". Since there isn't even an article called Space Trek, what are these supposed to be referring to? My guess is WP:NSFT, but even if real there's literally no context there. --Calton | Talk 01:46, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A vandal's back

You blocked User:Janx Jrotum for vandalism, now the same person seems to be using a new account: User:Pehehe Nhihhse. This new account has only vandalized three pages so far, but they are all pages Janx Jrotum vandalized and the same kind of vandalism (changing census data, deleting wikilinks to townships). I have given the first three warnings, but they seem to have already stopped for now. I thought you might want to know, and was not sure if you could keep an eye on this user (or should I just report this when I see more vandalism?). Thanks, Ruhrfisch 03:14, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for blocking the new account - I was not sure if we had to wait for four warnings and vandalism after that before asking that action be taken. I have a lot of PA pages on my watchlist so if I see this behavior again I will let you know. Thanks, Ruhrfisch 03:22, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

According to Wikipedia deletion and page-protection regulations, deletion of an article needs to be done in a panel and reasons need to be cited. Please undelete wrongly deleted articles such as Kai Wong, Kai Christophe Wong. Thank you.

Kai Wong was deleted via Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kai Wong. Subsequent repost was deleted under WP:CSD criteria G4. Kai Christophe Wong is a duplicate of Kai Wong and is also eligible for deletion as G4. Then, if you want to overturn the decision, you need to use Deletion review.Blnguyen | rant-line 07:55, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello good friend! There's really no point in vandalizing Wikipedia.… Countless users have tools and programs that spot vandalism, and we have almost a constant lineup of users who volunteer to monitor harmful edits, as well as automated bots that can locate vandalism and change it back almost instantly. Vandalism just like yours has been done countless times in the past, and we know how to deal with it. Yes, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia anyone can edit, and sure, it might be tempting to totally fuck an article up, but that's not what we're here to do. If you'd like to edit Wikipedia in a constructive manner that doesn't make you look like a complete idiot, feel free to do so, otherwise, it's best to just leave it alone. That saves you the time of making pointless changes, and saves me the time of reverting those changes just as fast, if not faster, than you make them. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy using, and maybe editing, Wikipedia. ⇒ JarlaxleArtemis 00:36, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

What are you referring to sir? And what's more your name is not JarlaxleArtemis.Blnguyen | rant-line 08:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted this man's biographical article. Notwithstanding that he is a prominent Conservative Party (UK) figure on the Right of the party, a past chairman of the Conservative Monday Club, and that he is one of England's leading Law Lecturers/experts, is it possible for you to say why he has been deleted? For instance, could we know (1) who proposed the deletion and (2) how it can be contested. Thanks. 86.139.185.202 11:21, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was proposed for deletion via the {{prod}} mechanism by User:Homeontherange on the grounds"Non-notable vanity? bio of a minor lawyer and political figure, never elected to public office and whose only possibly notable position was held in the 1970s (editor of a club magazine)." As this was not contested, or you forgot to, you may simply recreate the article and see what happens.Blnguyen | rant-line 01:21, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I too am interested as Homeontherange appears to be 'chasing' as many articles on Tory right-wingers as he can find and deleting them. Swerling was very notable (there are umpteen newspaper references to him), he was a Consultant to a major firm of City of London solicitors, and one of the country's leading Law experts. He was also Chairman of the Conservative Monday Club. So Homeontherange's reasons are obviously biased. I had not looked at the article for some time and when I came back to view it, it was gone. How can one "recreate" it? Can one see the original article in an archive somewhere? It seems wrong to ask people to research the article all over again. Where, for instance, will we locate photos? Is there somewhere to appeal for restoration? Hope you can advise. 213.122.47.42 15:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you start an account, and get back to me, I can send you the deleted contents. You can restart the article, as there has not been an Community debate about it, but rather only that nobody seemed to care if it was removed or not.Blnguyen | rant-line 02:40, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to keep pestering you, but since you're an admin and attached to the Wikiproject, I thought you'd be the most logical first port of call here.
The article Ruffus seems to have gone through a series of different incarnations - occasionally being about the Estonian performers of "Eighties Coming Back" in '03 and occasionally about an Irish three-piece. The Irish version tends not to be Wikified, and when not Wikified it was flagged as a copyvio (it was then written up better, before going back to the original text).
Basically, the issue seems to be that the Irish band is far from notable (particularly as currently written up - the link to the Dutch 'pedia is to the Estonian ESC entrants) and the copyvio issue surrounds their entry as well. My gut feeling is that the Estonians should go under "Ruffus" with the Irishmen (re-written) at "Ruffus (Irish band)" at which point the notability issue can be duked out elsewhere. I'll go and make the relevant changes, but I just thought I should let someone know what I'm planning since the articles seem to have had issues with them. BigHaz 12:08, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Of course, joke's on me since I can't make the Estonians return to their rightful place. I'll do it manually.
Joke's still on me, the wretched talk pages don't seem to have moved properly (I clicked the relevant boxes, so I think I'll just leave it alone now).

Cricketers pictures

but are not those pictures for public. I mean that website is not privately owned by an individual nor a company. Everything that is on that website can be used by normal people, Right. Thank You Salman

Unfortunately no, the pictures there are copyrighted to AFP news agency or Getty Images, who are commercial photographers and media who use the pictures to make their livelihood, so we aren't allowed to use them. If they are {{promotional}} pictures released by the organisation in order to publicise their work then we can use them. For instance http://www.usocpressbox.org is the website of the United States Olympic Committee have images of all of their athletes, and the pictures are labelled as promotional - it tells us that the pictures of the US athletes are there for non-profit distribution to highlight the work of the Olympic team. In this case it is the work of corporate media who sell the rights to Cricinfo, BBC Sport etc, so cannot be used for Wikipedia. Many regards, Blnguyen | rant-line 01:50, 30 June 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I would think 48 hours for a first-timer is a bit harsh. (The second response might have been his way of saying "You're kidding me".) I'll lessen it to 24 hours if you have no objections.
Sorry for the delayed response, I was deleting images without copyright info. =.= Kimchi.sg 05:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, that's fine - I guess the attack was on you not me, but they were quite strident.Blnguyen | rant-line 05:12, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Personal attack

What the heck was that on Khoikhoi's user page?? Don't people have anything better to enjoy theirselves? You sure responded fast though :) DeliDumrul 03:12, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, can you take a look at this past vote and tell me if there is anything I can do about it based on this argument?
Sorry for asking this kind of help from you, but you look like you never dealt with articles about that area, so I think you'd be neutral. Thanks DeliDumrul 03:22, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Khoikhoi and I not always agree on everything, but I think he's trying his best to stay neutral and honest. :) DeliDumrul 03:25, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops. I didn't mean to ask you to do anything about it. I just wanted to ask what I can do about it. Anyways.. Thanks DeliDumrul 03:43, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have decided to retire

Hello Blnguyen. I just wanted to come here and thank you for everything before I retire from wikipedia. I have decided not to stay for various reasons, mostly from the past. I have seen what this place has done to people, and I have decided to not let it happen to me. I don't know if I will come back, but regardless I wanted to thank you. You were always nice to me, and for that I am forever greatful. Thank you my friend for everything. Matt B."aka" Thetruthbelow 04:43, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support in my RfA!

Thanks for voting!
Hello Blnguyen, and thanks for your support in my recent RfA. I'm pleased to announce that it passed with a final tally of (96/0/0). I was overwhelmed by all of the nice comments and votes of confidence from everyone. I especially appreciate your nomination and strong words of support. Thanks again! Do I need to "unblock" my 3 hour ban so as not to supercede your 24 hour ban? OhNoitsJamie Talk 07:36, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carola

I would like to draw your attention, as an administrator and prominent member of WikiProject Eurovision, to the Carola Häggkvist article. As you might know, Carola is to some extent controversial due to her past involvement in religious movements, as well as certain declarations and actions in the media. Especially the gay activists in Sweden and to some extent rest of Europe reacted very strongly to reports by Swedish gay magazine QX, as well as other, mostly tabloid media, of her alleged anti-gay remarks (or at least remarks not viewed as favorable by the gay activist community). Carola's winning Melodifestivalen in 2006 spurned another massive campaign against her during which some activists tried to argue she is strongly homophobic.

Recently, an anonymous editor using IPs beginning with 80.135. repetedly edited the "Views on homosexuality" section of the article, including a paragraph which I would describe as rather POV and trying to argue a point rather than inform the readers. This editor also deleted some other content contributed by other editors, including the link to the source of one of media reports in question. I believe this is not proper behavior and find the past versions more NPOV - I would, of course, appreciate your opinion on that, as I cannot be objective anymore as I had contributed to the article. I would be most obliged if you could devote some time to looking into the issue and give your opinion on that, as well as state what could be done about that.

Thanks a lot in advance - Bravada, talk - 10:46, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit busy at the moment, maybe in two-three days time. Thanks, Blnguyen | rant-line 02:10, 3 July 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Asking for a favor. I am going to unprotect this page by edit warrior request, which has seen some nasty warring recently, but I am going to be completely unavailable until very late on Saturday US Eastern Time, for the next 30 hours or so. Please keep an eye out for it tomorrow, perhaps put it on your watchlist, and make sure people are playing nice. Thanks a million, and do not hesitate to ask for return favors. Cheers. - CrazyRussian talk/email 23:45, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, congrats on the media mention. Do it again, and you'll meet WP:BIO. - CrazyRussian talk/email 23:46, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks

Thank you very much for your support for my recent RfA, which I'm quite happy to announce has passed with a consensus of 67 supporting, 0 opposed and 0 neutral. I'm glad I meet your criteria. Most of all, I'm glad you took the time to evaluate my candidacy, as I believe that's what keeps RfA running smoothly, and I'll be working hard to justify the vote of confidence you've placed in me. Please let me know at my talk page if you have any comments on my performance as an admin. Thanks! TheProject 02:28, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May I ask why you removed my piece on Mahela Jaywardene's recent spell as captain in England. Surely that has reference to Mahela Jayawardene. Thank you

Selected articles on Portal:F1

Hello again.

I dropped notes round a while back to those who have listed themselves at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Formula_One to ask for suggestions for selected articles on portal:Formula One. There was a pretty good response, both in terms of how it might work and of articles suggested. Damon Hill came out with the most support and was brought up to Good Article standard after a lot of work by Skully Collins before going on as the F1 portal selected article a couple of weeks ago. It is now at Featured Article Candidates as a Featured Article candidate (why not drop by and see if you can help polish it further?).

Several people who responded to the original request suggested that a monthly or bi-weekly 'Selected Article' could act as a catalyst for an improvement drive to get more articles up to a higher standard. Although it wasn't quite what I had in mind when I started, this seemed to work pretty well for the Damon Hill article, so I've drafted up a process for doing this more regularly. See Portal_talk:Formula_One/Management_of_selected_articles for details. Essentially the suggestion is that we vote for an article to improve every couple of weeks and at the end of the improvement process the article goes on the portal as the new 'Selected Article'. I'd be grateful for any comments on how this might work - I'm sure some of you are more familiar with things 'Wiki' than me - as well as your votes for the next candidate (by 16 July).

You may also want to help with the article Gilles Villeneuve, which was the next most popular after Damon Hill. The idea is to try and get it up to GA standard by 16 July and then put it on the portal as the 'Selected Article'. I hope you can help! 4u1e 15:05, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Touth's vandalism

Did you check the link before removing it? He deleted another person's comments about his previous vandalism (which at the time it was posted was very relevant to dealing with the problem Touth caused for the article). He should, at the very least, be warned for doing so. -- LGagnon 02:07, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vermont United States Senate election, 2006

I am alerting you that twice today I have had to revert changes to the article Vermont United States Senate election, 2006 that amount to something between a campaign ad and outright vandalism. In both cases the edits were from an annonymous IP (each time a different one). Could you please take a look at this. Any help you can provide will be appreciated, thanks.Cbvt 04:15, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Right after posting the above note, I checked and the article has already been reverted to the vandalized form. Please revert and protect. Thanks.Cbvt 04:16, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zinedine Zidane

I think you left a message in the wrong user talk page. I haven't made an edit to the article. Cheers. Ytny 04:42, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding. I think it's noteworthy, but not noteworthy enough to bring up in the first paragraph. Granted, I don't know how he's perceived in France, but if it's documented that he faces discrimination because of his religion or he's outspoken about it, then I might feel differently, but I certainly wouldn't put it in the first sentence. Most people think of him as being of Algerian descent, not Kabyle Muslim, and either way, I think it belongs in the "Personal" section. Ytny 04:47, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning User:Fatfaceman

Sorry to drop in like that, but couldn't we indefblock this user because of his username (WP:U, obscene, at least in this context)?; I would have done so myself, but saw your block and had a look at the appropriate talk-page. Regards. Lectonar 07:20, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, we can have a chat. My understanding of sexual puns is basically non-existent (probably fortunately so), so I probably didn't understand what it was about.Blnguyen | rant-line 07:49, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
