Welcome to my talk page, please leave new messages below.

Lord of the Isles

Hi Mark,

Thanks for letting me know about the changes to the Lord of the Isles pages. To be honest I didn't give the changes the time they needed. I'm some way through my PhD at the moment and was just startled that the old Kingship idea was still there when scholarship is not in favour. If I get the time I'll make some sourced changes with care.

Jim

PS I'm not even sure how to join the talk page at the correct spot! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.50.94 (talk) 22:06, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, the problematic edit occurred long enough ago that no one would hold it against you now. In fact, the revert may have been an error on my part. Also, there is a "New section" tab at the top of talk pages, you can click that and it will set up a space for you to leave a message. Let me know if you have any questions, Mark Arsten (talk) 00:00, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back

Welcome back! ///EuroCarGT 05:39, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Did I miss anything interesting? Mark Arsten (talk) 05:42, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
... no.
The llama needs its hair combing, though. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 07:21, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
yes , --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:26, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I could think of few things, actually. VisualEditor has improved a lot and is now a very useful editing tool. Also, User:ТимофейЛееСуда has become an admin and has a new username: TLSuda. Judging by what you did before the hiatus, you two are going to see a lot of each other... if you are planning on doing exactly what you did before. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 20:38, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it's great to talk to all of you again. Mark Arsten (talk) 00:18, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that's awesome. Glad to hear it! Mark Arsten (talk) 00:33, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks. Hope to see you at FAC soon ;) Too many articles that aren't nearly quirky enough. — Crisco 1492 (talk)
Yeah, I was working pretty hard before I left, probably a bit too hard in retrospect. Glad to see my old friends are still plugging away at SPI though! Mark Arsten (talk) 20:30, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Welcome back, Mark. Missed you while you were gone. <joke> WMF unilaterally issued all of us admins new mops. They work only with VisualEditor and MediaViewer, and there's no opt-out! </joke> Go Phightins! 20:32, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, congrats on the promotion! I wish I could have voted, but it seems like the RFA narrowly succeeded with me :) Mark Arsten (talk) 20:35, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was honestly flattered by the community's support; at the same time, though, adminship isn't what it's made out to be ... but I love buttons, and now have more to push, so it's not all bad :-) Go Phightins! 20:37, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We're glad you came back to editing! We all missed you so much. :) IPadPerson (talk) 12:31, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Pleased to see that you're back, Mark Arsten. :) Acalamari 18:25, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good to see all of you are still here too! Mark Arsten (talk) 22:10, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, welcome back. Flyer22 (talk) 22:12, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And thank you for your encouragement, as well. Mark Arsten (talk) 00:24, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

James Grant

Hi Mark, wondering if you might be able to help out? You deleted the page for "James Grant (journalist)" and wondered what would need to be done/edits made to get the page reinstated in some form? Thanks! PaulBluebolt76 (talk) 19:50, 18 August 2014 (UTC) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Grant_%28journalist%29 http://www.wikigrain.org/?req=James+Grant+%28journalist%29&sort=date[reply]

Hi Paul, I've moved the deleted version of the page to Draft:James Grant (journalist) so you can work on it. The long and short of it is that it needs more citations to reliable sources in the body. See WP:CITE and WP:RS for explanations of what I mean by this. Let me know if you have any questions. Mark Arsten (talk) 20:33, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you Mark, and thanks for getting back so quickly. I'll work on updating the draft and adding suitable citations. Cheers, Paul Bluebolt76 (talk) 15:56, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

IP address used for nothing but voting delete in AFDs with another user

You closed the sockpuppet investigation previously. [1] So I'd like to point out that this IP address has 99% of their edits in deletion discussions, and a comparison shows this other user is there [2] as well, both saying delete. Sometimes right after one another, other times spaced out a bit. Just look at the edit history of the IP address. [3] And the other guy seems to have no edits but in AFDs either. [4] Dream Focus 22:01, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, that does seem suspicious. Since there's a lot more evidence than there was 8 months ago you might want to re-open the SPI. Not sure I'll be able to look at it in detail very quickly. Mark Arsten (talk) 22:09, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think an administrator is needed to reopen it, and you are the one that closed it. I'm not really familiar on how these things work. Dream Focus 22:46, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, you can re-open it since there is new evidence that wasn't there was when I closed it before. On WP:SPI there's a box that says "How to open an investigation:" and you click the "[show]" tab next to it and there's a box you can just add the name of the case and it will re-open it. I haven't handled many SPI cases lately so I'm not inclined to take action without getting input from another clerk. Mark Arsten (talk) 01:47, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I'm just a bit skeptical on this one, User:Dream Focus. The IP only seems to show up on AfDs started by the other user that are related to boxing and other martial artists, and then only after they've been listed with a This debate has been included in the list of Martial arts-related deletion discussions., where they show up on that page's list where anyone interested in the topic will have watchlisted it. I don't see any cases over the past couple of months where the IP showed up before the AfD was listed, and also doesn't seem to show up on proposed AfDs in other categories, such as Hong Kong movies. The arguments are frequently similar, but sometimes aren't. Based on the current state of the list page, the IP would seem to haunt the place, and has commented on most of the AfDs, including many not nominated by the user. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:20, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Welcome back, Mark! Great to see you here. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:20, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
They disagreed with one another in one AFD, so probably different people. Or it could be a clever ruse to throw us off since they agree on delete every other time and knew someone was talking about them. I have no idea. I just read how one was involved in something before at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Papaursa/Archive, and if you read what Dennis Brown said at the end of that page, sounds suspicious. But no way to tell. I do it find it odd that someone can edit Wikipedia only in AFD and nothing else, especially without ever having to even register a name, just using an IP address. Bertie Gilbert Re-Creaton

Hi Mark On 5 March 2013 you deleted the page Bertie Gilbert I have been working hard to put together a new article for Bertie Gilbert and when I tried to create I saw the page is protected from creation. I really do think this guy is noteable now with the recent short films he has made. Have a look at my article here and see the following links as well. Youtube channel page

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this I hope you give this page a chance. (User:H.Brian Griffin talk | contribs 22:12, 19 August 2014 (UTC))[reply]

At a glance it looks like it needs citations to reliable sources before it can be restored. See WP:CITE and WP:RS for detailed explanations of what I mean by this. Are there newspapers or magazines that have written about him? Coverage on websites can sometimes be used, but only certain websites are deemed reliable on Wikipedia. Also see WP:NACTOR for a good rule of thumb. Let me know if you have any questions. Mark Arsten (talk) 01:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have added some references now. Is this ok? and if it is, will you create the article or will you unprotected the article from creation so I can create it. Thanks for the help.(User:H.Brian Griffin talk | contribs 09:06, 20 August 2014 (UTC))[reply]
I made this anyway if you could merge the article Bertie Gilbert with the new one I created it would make more sense. Since there are no other articles on wikipedia called Bertie Gilbert. Thanks agian (User:H.Brian Griffin talk | contribs 12:38, 20 August 2014 (UTC))[reply]
Unfortunately, imdb is not a reliable source, so that doesn't count for notability purposes. I'm not sure about the other source either, but it's better than imdb at least. A single source is usually not enough to demonstrate notability. At this point it doesn't seem to me like he meets the notability guidelines so I've moved it back to User:H.Brian Griffin/Bertie Gilbert. Mark Arsten (talk) 19:37, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I added another Reference is this ok? (User:H.Brian Griffin talk | contribs 20:21, 20 August 2014 (UTC))[reply]
Blogspot blogs are generally not accepted as good sources either. It might be too soon for an article on Gilbert, sorry. Mark Arsten (talk) 00:24, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're back!!!

Looks like I'm a little late to the party... Welcome back Mark!!! I can't tell you how elated I became when I saw your name/datestamp in the block log here. I am now among admin ranks, and I had for so long looked forward to working with you. Hope you decide to stay for good... your shoes are impossible to fill but for the past five months I sure have tried hard :) A beer awaits you below — MusikAnimal talk 19:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! It feels good to be back in action. Congrats on the RFA, I hope you like being an admin... it can be tiresome at times! Mark Arsten (talk) 00:21, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A beer for you!

Welcome back Mark. Look forward to working with you! — MusikAnimal talk 19:51, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:Ryulong

User talk:Ryulong

Hi, you semi'd that page in 2013, 17:18, 30 December 2013 Mark Arsten (talk | contribs) changed protection level of User talk:Ryulong‎ ‎[edit=autoconfirmed] (indefinite)‎[move=sysop] (indefinite) (Trolling, let me know when you want this unprotected) (hist)

Can you ask him/her if it can be removed? Or at least if he can make a page for IPs to talk to him/her?

Thx, 88.104.23.102 (talk) 01:30, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

At the time I protected his page, he was getting constantly targeted by sockpuppets, so fairly extreme measures were justified. I haven't been around much lately, so I'm not sure if protection still makes sense or not. @Ryulong:, any thoughts on the matter? Mark Arsten (talk) 01:35, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
