Usage

Wikipedia:EBSCO/Navbox EBSCO Information Services is a major US-based provider of library resources and information services. It manages a wide range of databases covering all subject areas. For more information see its website.

EBSCO's partnership with The Wikipedia Library includes one-year access to the following three resources:

Requirements

  • You do not already have access to EBSCO resources through your local library, institution, or organization
  • You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of 6 months old
  • You have a minimum of 500 edits to Wikimedia projects

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered

Expectations

Approved editors may

  • Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content;
  • Electronically save portions of restricted content;
  • Print out single copies of portions of restricted content;
  • Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the EBSCO website they are accessing and with the EBSCO user agreement.

Approved editors will not

  • Share their account logins or passwords with others, or sell their access to other parties
  • Mass scrape or mass download EBSCO content
  • Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose.
  • Datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles.
  • Use EBSCO content for any purpose not specifically outlined above

Private and confidential information

  • By applying to the Program, you understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, The Wikipedia Library, and EBSCO. Wikipedia Library organizers contracted under the Wikimedia Foundation will abide by the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy and associated confidentiality agreements. Volunteer representatives of the Wikipedia Library are neither employees nor contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation (or EBSCO), but they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

  • Add {{Wikipedia:EBSCO/Userbox}} to your user boxes. This helps us share our project with other experienced users.

Apply

Wikipedia:TWL/Expect Add yourself at the bottom of the list with a line starting with #{{user8|USERNAME|Project=code}} (eg. {{user8|Example|Project=en}}) followed by an explanation of why you would like access to this resource. It is a good idea to include in your application text your editing areas benefited by access and examples of your commitment to content creation.

  1. MSJapan (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) 10 years on WP, active in many historical areas (including Japan, but particularly Freemasonry), and the general resources should be full of material I can use for almost whatever strikes my fancy at a given moment. MSJapan (talk) 01:18, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Skyfall (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) - I've got 6K edits, 2/3 of which are to mainspace, 8 years on WP. No access via local libraries. My areas of interest are Mithology and History, expecially Norse, German and Greek Mithology. As usual I spend lot of time searching online high-quality material for citations. Having an access to high-quality related material would be precious. --Skyfall (talk) 04:44, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  3. Rob (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Up to this moment I have 13,732 edits in the Armenian Wikipedia. Particularly interested in History and Humanities. Access to scientific and educational reference materials would be very useful in my WP work. --Rob (talk) 12:21, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  4. Lamiot (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am french and actively present on wikipedia for 10 years. My favorite subjects are architecture and art history, environment and landscape ecology, and environmental health issues. Better access to fresh scientific information would be very useful to improve Wikipedia and other sister projects.--Lamiot (talk) 18:08, 17 September 2015 (UTC).[reply]

  5. SMcCandlish (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) 10 years, 100K edits. Have created over 140 new articles, but mostly work on improving very short dictionary-like entries to encyclopedic quality. Most active in biological, anthropological, and linguistic topic areas. For example, I helped developed Albinism and related articles here, and am presently working on Race (biology), about the taxonomic term, and have long been working on a various animal breed-related articles. So, I'd be most able to make use of Academic Search Complete and MasterFILE Complete, though Business Source Complete might also be useful for business-related research in other topics I edit, like sports history. See, e.g., William A. Spinks, of which I wrote about 95%, and about 1/3 of Glossary of cue sports terms. One area in which our billiards/pool articles are sorely lacking is the history of the commercial side of the sport; very few present or historical manufacturers have articles presently.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  20:45, 17 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  7. GregJackP (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)), I recently lost access to EBSCO at TAMU, it would be very helpful in the legal articles that I create. I currently have 4 FAs (with another about to be promoted), and 17 GAs. I use EBSCO to find secondary sources for SCOTUS cases and American Indian issues. It would help me tremendously. 15. Oceanflynn (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) -- I have contributed over 10,000 edits over a number of years, mainly in English, creating new articles, sandbox articles, editing existing articles, adding categories, wikilinks and improving reference details on articles, etc. I have recently been accepted as volunteer with Wikipedia Library. I use ProveIt and I am a frequent user of "inline edit inline citation" summaries. I take great care with citations using DOI, PMID, ISBN, etc. I often cite peer-reviewed academic articles. I participated in an editathon. I would use EBSCO to add content and to improve references by adding reference details. I am no longer working with an academic institution so I do not have easy access to journals. I read The Economist regularly whenever I can. When I fly, the current print format provides reading material but I could not subscribe on a regular basis.Oceanflynn (talk) 18:15, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have written several articles and have helped clean up several others. My primary interests have to do with corporate history and retail history. My most recent contributions were the August Wagner Breweries page and I am in the process of reworking the Gamble-Skogmo page. Having access to these data bases would be very helpful in nailing down acquisitions and mergers and their dates.dirtyharry667 (talk) 3:21, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

  26. John Hill (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have made over 21,000 edits to Wikipedia, initiated many articles, and uploaded more than 545 of my own photos plus many other images to Wikipedia since January 2005. I edit articles on many diverse subjects including Asian history and geography, the history of the Silk Roads, Australian fauna and flora, and West Indian history and culture. I also constantly monitor changes to numerous articles, and regularly edit articles by other editors. I have published a book, now in its 2-volume 2nd edition:- Through the Jade Gate - China to Rome: A Study of the Silk Routes 1st to 2nd centuries CE which includes the first complete English translation of the chapter on the countries to the west of China from the Hou Hanshu. I am preparing another book - a translation of the 3rd century CE, the Weilüe, which also describes the Silk Routes both overland and maritime between China, India, Central Asia and Rome. I am trying to incorporate much of this information into the Wikipedia and regularly find myself unable to access your precious resource as I live in a very isolated region a couple of thousand kilometers from a significant library.John Hill (talk) 08:58, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  30. Launchballer (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been editing on and off across multiple accounts for over seven years, and using this one for over two and a half, with at the time of writing just under 15,000 edits on this account. Although I rarely edit Business-based Wikipedia articles, I'd like to apply to access the Business Source Complete, as I'm doing an Access to Higher Education course in Business Studies at Kingston College.--Launchballer 21:48, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    @Launchballer: Can you explain a little more about how you intend to use Business Source Complete? Is that resource the primary reason you are applying for access to EBSCO and is the intention to use Business Source Complete to expand Wikipedia's content? -Thibbs (talk) 03:04, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    Certainly. Access to Higher Education is an adult education course which provides a leg up into university in the UK. II'm doing Access to Business which is why I'm after this Business resource. I tend not to toot my contributions to the Business section of Wikipedia as I think they amount to just express pricing and value brands in the United Kingdom, Luisa Zissman and List of companies with spelling mistakes in their names and I didn't see that intent as a requirement but if there is anything my course covers that Wikipedia doesn't I'll happily copy it over (although as it's pre-university it probably won't be very much).--Launchballer 07:54, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    @Launchballer:  Pending... The basic reason Wikipedia offers these accounts is to expand and improve Wikipedia's content. This may not be expressed very clearly since it's not listed under the requirements, but the TWL Partnership Processing Timeline above shows in step #4 that the active use of EBSCO access is intended for the improvement of Wikipedia content. It would be wonderful if TWL were able to offer databases like EBSCO to supplement the academic endeavors of all of our editors, but we simply lack the resources to offer those kinds of services. Because you've indicated that the overlap between your intended use of the database and those areas of Wikipedia that you might incidentally improve probably won't be very much, it would be best for now if we revisit this application later if there are accounts left over. -Thibbs (talk) 21:20, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Are there specific sources similar to Ref #5 and within the EBSCO database that you are hoping to use to expand the Eva Neer article? Are you planning to use sources within the EBSCO database to add references like Ref #5 to other articles similar to Eva Neer? I'm just trying to determine whether there are any specific EBSCO resources that you are specifically interested in or whether your interest in the database is more of a general kind of interest. -Thibbs (talk) 19:59, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  34. Epolk (talk · contribs) I have been an editor for about a decade. Per X!'s Tools I have over 17,000 edits, 14,000+ of which are on unique pages. As the number of articles on Wikipedia have reached a critical mass, I have moved from creating and proofreading articles to creating citations for existing articles. The publicly available sources for searching scholarly works usually point to an abstract for an article or a pay site (e.g. JSTOR) so my ability to provide accurate and complete citations are currently limited. As for my areas of interest, they tend toward history and the sciences, especially zoology as this area seems to be most in need of expansion and citation of sources. @Thibbs: Sorry about that. Had an email associated but did not have it set to receive emails from users. This has been corrected. Epolk (talk) 20:35, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    @Epolk: Approved Expect an email shortly with further details. -Thibbs (talk) 10:37, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  35. Nick2crosby (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have 500+ edits on Wikipedia. I'm relatively "new" to Wikipedia as far as edits, but if I was to use EBSCO, it'd better my knowledge of certain topics, and help me edit more pages. @Nick2crosby: You haven't been editing much lately - will you make active use of this account? -Thibbs (talk) 13:58, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  36. Alexander Tendler (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)I would be most glad to have access to EBSCO database. Obviously, most valuable research contributions can be made. --Alexander Tendler (talk) 10:59, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    @Alexander Tendler: Can you explain how this particular resource will be helpful to you? -Thibbs (talk) 16:40, 16 October 2015 (UTC) Of course! EBSCO database contains an enormous number of academic journals, including in my domains of activity. Accessing EBSCO would create an excellent opportunity for essential contributions. --Alexander Tendler (talk) 16:04, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  37. Keahapana (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Contributing to WP since 2006, most of my editing has been in articles concerning Chinese and Japanese languages, linguistics, lexicography, Eastern religions, and mythology. Obtaining EBSCO access to academic journals would be very useful in my WP research. Thanks, Keahapana (talk)
