Talk to me, Andy Mabbett

  • If you post a message on this page, I'll reply on this page to avoid fragmenting the discussion.
  • If I've left you a message on your talk page, I will be watching it, so please reply there rather than here (but do feel free to drop a copy of {{Talkback}} here).
  • If appropriate, I will move discussion from here to the relevant article's talk page, so that anyone interested can join in.
  • If you want to start a new discussion thread, please start it at the bottom of the page. Better still, use the "new section" tab next to the "edit this page" tab, or the link at the foot of this section, either of which will do that automatically.
  • Please do not make links from within section headings.
  • Inaccessible HTML (coloured text, "small" tags, etc.) will be removed from this page on sight.
  • Please sign and date your entries by inserting four tildes (~~~~) at the end.
  • Start a new discussion.

@Randykitty: Belatedly: thank you. What a vague and unhelpful comment he made. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:55, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ORCID invalid records blog post

While http://scholarlyoa.com/2015/10/29/concerns-about-dirty-data-in-the-orcid-database/ is probably not your fault, or problem, is there any chance you can help remove those (hopefully invalid) records - e.g. escalate it to someone more appropriate? John Vandenberg (chat) 05:03, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That post already has a comment posted in behalf of ORCID, who are aware of and dealing with the issue. In the meantime, such records do not interfere in any way with the use of valid records. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:53, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can you add references to a template?

Andy, I have been working on some cleanup lists eg Somerset and Bristol. I commented to User:Colinrosewell about Template:Rosewell family tree which adds a references needed/uncitedtag to articles it is included in. He attempted to add references to that template but says this broke the template and it has now been blanked. Is there a correct way to add references in a template?— Rod talk 08:52, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Rodw: It should be possible; having looked at the edits concerned, I'm not sure what User:Colinrosewell was trying to achieve. I suggest adding the refernces one at a time, and checking each is OK before moving to the next. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:41, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Naming conventions

Pigsonthewing, sorry about our disagreements over "You in Your Small Corner"‎, but you touched a raw nerve. I have raised my concerns over terminology before, in greater detail than on the talk page. See my comments in Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (television)#When is a (TV) film not a film?. Unfortunately, it has not gained a response, so I would appreciate a second opinion, if you are so minded. Philip Cross (talk) 16:13, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reference errors on 20 November

Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that an edit performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. It is as follows:

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:25, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ukrsrow

Can I get some input from you, please, on Template:Ukrsrow and the state of UK railway stations – D et al.

I amended UK railway stations – C to use Template:Ukrsrow (based on awesome regex-fu, fwiw ... how are you getting on with that?). And that worked fine, as it does for Stations A & B

But UK railway stations – D and probably others have stations which have no postcode nor station TLA ... and in some cases, have ad hoc links to a map and a timetable - see Dduallt railway station in the list.

Template:Ukrsrow is designed to handle the presence or absence of a postcode and/or of a TLA. Not designed to handle ad hoc values (e.g. a Template:Coord for the map and URLs for station details and station timetables). Were Template:Ukrsrow to be amended so that it could cope with these additional values, then I could continue on & amend all pages a) without information loss and b) such that other later can add stations for which we have no postcode but do have a location.

Right direction / worth doing? And how is your template-fu? Might you be inclined to get involved? --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:16, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Magna Carta Tapestry

Hi Andy,

Sorry to bother you so early. I just forgot to mention that, if you are still in Manchester, perhaps you would like to see the exhibition in the Whitworth Art Gallery by Cornelia Parker. She made a tapestry about the Magna Carta taking as model the Wikipedia page. I went to see it and I think is worthy.

Just another way in which Wikipedia is influential.

Once again, thank you so much for the course today. It was amazing.

Regards
