The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Done. Well, there was nothing that could be done other than to replace the image, so I took that one from Flickr. I've also updated the file description page with the correct license information and wotnot. How's that? nagualdesign 21:17, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Done I didn't center the bottom row because I thought it looked fine left justified, and because the images are of different sizes without hard borders between them. It just wouldn't have looked good without an hour or two's effort retouching afterwords. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 18:27, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

- Sorry for butting in. I've uploaded a lighter version without the blurring / grain reduction. and closer to the original hue. Revert as preferred. (Hohum @) 16:22, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you both very much. Both versions are a great improvement on the original. Would it be possible to remove the cloudy patches of white from the subject's hair and above his right (our left) eyebrow?
- Cleaned up cloudy patches in Shaw's hair and face; removed several creases in the image that had been missed earlier. Centpacrr (talk) 17:37, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- That's marvellous. Thank you so much. We're aiming to get the article to FA, and it will be excellent to have a lead image so much improved. Tim riley talk 17:53, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Centpacrr: You painted over the highlights on his hair with a blurry brush. I reverted because it only looks good zoomed way out. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 18:26, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- I've tweaked the hair a bit more at 100% to meet what the OP requested (removing the smudges in hair and face and remove three paper creases missed by others. The OP now has more than enough versions to pick from so let's leave it up to him to decide which one best suits his needs. Centpacrr (talk) 18:42, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

- Thank you both very much. Both versions are a great improvement on the original. Would it be possible to remove the cloudy patches of white from the subject's hair and above his right (our left) eyebrow?
Question: Can you not make out the difference between the hair highlight on the left side of the white area, and the white smudge on the right? I'm seriously asking, not trying to be sarcastic. This version does look quite a bit better than the version I reverted, but the missing highlight is a little glaring. Also, the smudge on his face was a good catch, it looked like direct light until you zoom in on it, which is why I (and presumably Hohum) missed it. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 18:56, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- The white area in the hair does not appear to me to be a natural "highlight", and comparing this image to dozens of others of Shaw I do not see any other image that has an odd hair "highlight" like this one which really looks quite unnatural to me. (In the original image it also seems to extend in to the background.) Even though this image is of Shaw at age 55 he still clearly has dark hair. I also repaired three creases in the image on just to the left of his face. As the OP requested the light patch in the hair be removed let's leave it to him to decided what version he likes. Centpacrr (talk) 19:14, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- I wasn't referring to a highlight as in the common practice of highlighting one's hair with lighter colored patches or strands, but to an actual highlight. You can clearly see hair texture which fades out exactly as it would if light were shining on it on the left side of the white patch. It's probably not as blown out as it looks in the original, but that's clearly a highlight. Finally, why do you keep bringing up the creases? Nobody's mentioned them but you. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 20:51, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Well I removed the hair "highlight" and the white splotch on the face because the OP requested it, and because it also looked odd to me. (I actually also made a study with the "highlight" in it but subdued and that looked "off" to me as well.) I removed the creases because there were there and clearly didn't belong. Nobody had to mention them or ask me to do so, and I suppose nobody else noticed them either. Whatever version the OP wants to use of the many available to him to choose from is fine with me. - Could someone help me out with this image? I uploaded the image, but unfortunately for some reason it was cut wrongly. It needs to look like this here,[1][2] and therefore requires some re-cutting/fixing. Something like this size would be ideal. -- LouisAragon (talk) 18:00, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Centpacrr:, thanks a lot, looks neat! Could you also perhaps remove the two bar at the bottom, under the image? Basically the bar with Arabic text and the one under it (Latin text)? That should finish it. Bests - LouisAragon (talk) 19:09, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

I'm afraid you're going to have to be more specific in what you want. These are all recent, high quality professional photographs. I'm sure I could make minor tweaks that would improve some of them to my eye, but I can't promise that everyone would agree that they look better. If there are specific changes you're looking for, we might be able to help, but as things stand, your request is pretty much for us to do nothing. - Watermark removed. I might have a go at using Lens Blur to 'remove' the other person later. The masking will be quite tricky. nagualdesign 15:32, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- Removing that guy might be a bit too much for an encyclopedia... I'm not sure. I could do it with cropping and duping the crowd, but that's an awfully heavy hand to take. Does anyone else have thoughts about doing this much editing to an image? MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 15:44, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- Here's a quick test that I did using Lens Blur. [dead link removed] Obviously the masking needs to be tidied up but I think the effect looks okay. What would be heavy-handed is cropping out Prince Charles/replacing the background with something made up. What do you think of my test image? nagualdesign 15:52, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- I can't see it (I'm at work, and they block the site you used). You could upload it, and we could revert if needed.
- I agree that cropping and painting out the guy would be heavy handed, that's what I was trying to say. If your lens blur effect looks good, I'd vote for that over any airbrushing type changes. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 15:57, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

- @Vinícius94: Centpacrr's edit wasn't one of his best, in my opinion, so I restored the image myself. (Compare before and after.) Unfortunately he's decided that it's "not an improvement" and reverted it. It isn't my intention to browbeat him every time he makes a slapdash edit, so I tried to do this without any fuss, but since he's decided to make something of it I'd like to draw your attention to the awful masking, fake background, featureless black suit jacket and excessive cropping. (See here.) As the original requester Centpacrr considers you the 'ultimate arbiter' of acceptability (notwithstanding how Wikipedia actually works), so it's up to you to decide which version you prefer.
- I welcome anybody else to gently persuade Centpacrr about the error of his ways, as I think his disruptive editing has the potential to damage the project, and he seems unable to judge his own work objectively. I frequently find myself cleaning up the mess he makes, but evidently he thinks I'm just some asshole who likes to hurt his feelings. It would be helpful if other editors weighed in with their own opinions. nagualdesign 13:44, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
- I believe that as long as we are allowed (which is the case until today) to upload different versions of the same picture, we won't have a problem here. I actually oppose both versions that have been uploaded. One, because it changed the background and the other for having added greyish tones that weren't there. But it's ok. We can have both in different files and we'll use whichever we prefer, depending on the case. There is space for everyone. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 14:06, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
- As it is apparently impossible to ever satisfy "Nagualdesign" I have reverted this to his/her version of the file and uploaded mine as a new "derivative" file which can be used or not at the OPs or other editors' discretion and will continue to do that now (as I did with the Prince Charles request above) in the future to avoid these constant kerfuffles. It should be understood and recognized, however, that digital image restoration is a subjective not objective "art" and what appeals to one practitioner does not necessarily appeal to another. (Nagualdesign, for instance, left the staining on the subject's shirt that I removed and failed to retain the greenish tint of the original. I made the image sharper so that it stood out more as a thumbnail.) So to each his/her own. Centpacrr (talk) 15:32, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, Centpacrr. I've uploaded a recoloured version, though personally I think the grayscale version looked cleaner. Sepia photographs can look good, as can selenium-toned photos, and I a fan of split toning where it emulates traditional processing (blue shadows and creamy highlights), but I think the colour of this photograph is mostly due to age-related yellowing. The green shadows are almost certainly due to aging. You wouldn't make the shadows green on purpose. nagualdesign 15:53, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

- Just my two cents: a grey background would not improve the image. His hair is grey, so even a different shade of grey would show less difference between the background and his hair than the current blue. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 14:00, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
