Useful new template
I just thought everyone would like the new {{indichelp}} template. Please use this on a user's talk page when they edit Indic text without enabling complex text support. Everyone knows that these users are simply trying to be helpful, and I'm sure they'd appreciate this tip. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:56, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks Sukh. I have required this in the past and had to do with a lot manual typing. Just what I needed. One minor change can be incorporated. As this is just one time editing, we don't need to write the short-form (WP:COMPLEX), and we should preferably use the full article name. What do you think? — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 06:21, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Help with translations
I'm currently working on a script intended to create short articles on political parties on a variety of wikipedias simultaneously. However, in order for the technique to work I need help with translations to various languages. If you know any of the languages listed at User:Soman/Lang-Help, then please help by filling in the blanks. Indian languages includes Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Urdu. Intervention needed: User:Mahawiki
Mahawiki (talk · contribs), whose constructive (non-deletion, non-revertion) contribution to Wikipedia consists of not much more than this, surfaces every week or so to troll the same 3-4 pages. He removes "Kannadi vandalism," being all mention of the Mahajan Commission Report and of the existance of Kannada people in towns on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border. I have repeatedly asked him not to use the pejorative "Kannadi" and reasoned with him repeatedly on content (for instance here, here, here) to no avail, and now we have a call-to-arms from him. He doesn't seem like a bad guy, just very very POV, so I am hoping that if someone else (with no "Kannadi" connections) reasons with him, there may be good effect. I do not feel up to taking up another such issue. Please help. ImpuMozhi 12:49, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Interesting stuff
Rei-bot has been translating towns created by User:Ganeshbot into Porteugese. The amazing thing is they used AWB to do it. They have global settings in AWB for translations. This is a link to the discussion there. This is for Sundar, check out pt:Ettayapuram in Porteugese. Pretty cool. :)- Ganeshk (talk) 17:42, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Please have a say at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hindu politics. In my opinion the entire point of the article is to push the POV that the Hindutva currents equals 'Hindu politics'. - Unlike in the previous discussion, in this thread, the discussion is about Jimbo showing interest. This happened at the recently concluded wikimania conference where he expressed such interest to Nichalp and me - he is looking at Bangalore as a venue. Requesting change of Template:India states
Ive created a new states/ut map and have modified the numbering. In the current setup the states are numbered according to the alphabetical order, but this holds true only for Roman languages, it would be more appropriate to do the numbering based on the position of the states. This way it is easier to look up a state in the list on the map and vice versa. Comments? - PlaneMad|YakYak 17:26, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- I like it. But, what's the no-man's land painted white in Kashmir ? Also, I guess, the pseudo-alphabetical order in non-romanised scripts is something that we may have to live with. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 07:19, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

disputes
If anybody wants to have a look at dispute resolution, there is a big argument on my talk page involving Holywarrior, Bakasuprman and BhaiSaab. Also it seems that Haphar and Subhash_bose are engaged in more debate again. There is an RFC - Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Bakasuprman up and running - it had gotten quite longwinded, and anybody who wants to keep a check to see if I haven't lost the plot or might want to relieve of this unenviable task are welcome, since I have spent about7 hours in the last two days reading up on all these complaints. Also, could people take a look at Talk:Californian Hindu textbook controversy because there is a lot of religious argument there about persecutions in history, etc, which are quite inflammatory, from adherents of a varieuty of religions. The Mumbai suburban railway articles such as Churchgate have tags that inform the reader which is the next and previous station on the line, the stop number, and the distance. Can someone have a look at Manmohan Singh? There appears to be an edit war going there and I don't have the time right now to work on that. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:20, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- I have looked at the article. some points raised by the user are correct. The article has too many POV phrases which are overlooked at first glance due to misleading references. For example the first sentence which say "Manmohan...architect of modern India" with a BBC reference. But checking up with the reference shows that the statement is "...architect of economic reforms". I would request you all to have a look at the article and make suggestions on the talk page so that a consensus can be reached within a day or two and get the article unprotected. There is a minor blame-game going on at the talk page too. I am trying to mediate. More helping hands are welcome. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 08:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- To clarify, I didn't say that the user alleging fancruft was wrong or the other person was wrong. Thanks for your effort, Aksi. I'm totally tied up until Tuesday, so I can't help. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:48, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Honorifics
I'd like people to start thinking about honorifics and common names as they're used in India with a view to eventually altering the WP manual of style. In particular, in the past I have had much trouble with people who object to Gandhi being called Gandhiji or Mahatma, purely because it conflicts with the MoS. Also, this means that common styles such as Pandit Nehru or Dr. Rajendra Prasad are not permissible. I think this is particularly inaccurate in our political culture. Someone once went through the Indira Gandhi article changing every instance of 'Mrs. Gandhi', a phrase still (?) uniquely hers, to 'Indira', citing the MoS. ('Gandhi' was deemed confusing.) This is possibly a place where WP:BIAS plays in, and people should mentally prepare for disagreements ahead. Hornplease 08:22, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- I would appreciate if any changes/reversions are temporarily suspended till a consensus is reached here. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 08:39, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- A good place for this discussion would be at Wikipedia:Naming Conventions (Indic). We've slowly been developing guidelines for such issues there. The section on honorifics needs expansion. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:40, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
copied from the notice board header Do not refer to Indian personalities by their honourary titles. Article 18 of the Indian Constitution bans the usage of titles. -- Lost(talk) 18:52, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Indian Portal updates
I have found that very few people take interest in Portal:India's internal activities like Selected article/picture candidates. Many a times, there is hardly one vote in addition to the nominator. To improve the situation, Deepu suggested that we add a few lines to {{India collaborations}}, which will carry updates of the nominations made in the portal. I wanted everybody's opinion on it before it is implemented.
I have also made some decisions regarding the portal. Till a few days back, the news section of the portal only featured national-importance and high-impact news. This resulted in only a couple of news for the whole month. I have started including more daily news that are important, though not in the long run. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 10:36, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, add one space for the India portal in the India collaborations template. Notice board is much more visted than the selected article/pic candidates etc.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:47, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, add one space each for Selected article candidates, selected pic candidates, and any other candidates there are. --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 16:35, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Bismillah Khan is this week's INCOTW. I had just put the INCOTW tag when I saw the news of his death. Please contribute to make this a great article. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 07:37, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
I created this list so that all protected areas can be viewed in one page, and can be updated easily. Data is from ministry website and is a year old, please help in expanding it and tabulating the raw data. Also needs standardisation of coloumns for different tables -- PlaneMad|YakYak 10:58, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

IST, PST
User: Tobias Conradi has made a unilateral move from Indian Standard Time to Time in India. Similarly with Pakistan Standard Time. I have reverted both as I believe the name of the timezone is of more importance than a general purpose article. Comments solicited. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:55, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Setting the record straight
I have just finished going through the article on the Uniform Civil code. While there were many parts in the article which seemed quite communal and biased i need to tackle the most controversial and important one. It is a question of helping a community, which i do not belong to but which i simpatise with: The Indian Muslims.
The article on the Uniform Civil Code contains a section on Muslim Personal Law. This sections states that Islam came to India in the 11th century. This assumption is wrong and only meant to stir up communal hatred. Reasons, (1) The 11th century marks the invasion of Mahmud of Gazni. Communal speakers like to associate the coming of Islam to India with Mahmud of Gazni. This is because they accuse him of being destructive and being an iconoclast (2) They want to paint a picture to illustrate that from its roots in India itself Islam has had a violent existance. The truth about the matter is that Islam probably came to India in around the 7th or 8th century or maybe even earlier (citation needed) to the Southern most part of India, ie. Kerala. This state had for a long time traded with Arab tradesmen. These Arab tradesmen would often start families here. They are the ancestors of today's present day Malabary Community, who have adopted their religion into the culture of the area they have lived in. The Malabaries are far from the violent Muslims, that the communal elements try to potray, that are supposed to exist in India. This was probably replicated in other trading centers of India. Thus trade was the first mode of transport that Islam traveled to India in. The second mode was the Arab rulers of Sindh that came here in the 7th century. These rulers came much before the coming of the Afghans and Turks. Thus to say that Islam came violently to India in the 11th century is falacios and a deeps study into the facts must be studied before each of us forms our own opinion. I hope this message can provide a counter balance to any communal elements that exist here. I also call out to Indian Muslims to come out and give their own opinion on these communal elements, remember the only way we give into them is by fighting them on their own terms.

- If you have any documented or reliable sources(Other than those Islamistan sites) that claim Islam came to India before 11th century AD, than cite them. You can also modify the article yourself, provided you cite the reliable sources.
