Macedonian football clubs have participated in European football competitions since 1961. Before 1992 Macedonia was a part of Yugoslavia. Therefore, Macedonian teams represented this country and did not always have a guaranteed spot in European competitions.

UEFA coefficient and ranking

For the 2017–18 UEFA competitions, the associations will be allocated places according to their 2016 UEFA country coefficients, which will take into account their performance in European competitions from 2011–12 to 2015–16. In the 2015 rankings that will be used for the 2017–18 European competitions, Macedonia's coefficient points total is 6.000. After earning a score of 1.500 during the 2015–16 European campaign, Macedonia is ranked by UEFA as the 40th best association in Europe out of 54.
