The Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy, known as SASTRA University, is a private university in the town of Thirumalaisamudram, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India. Undergraduate and postgraduate engineering courses are its focus. It offers undergraduate and post graduate courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management and Arts.[1]

History

SASTRA University started in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering, affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Trichy. In 2001 it was renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy. It was the first institution to get the 'Deemed University status' in Tamil Nadu. Srinivasa Ramanujan Center at Kumbakonam is affiliated to it.

In 2011, software company Tata Consultancy Services set a world record of recruiting 1,755 students from SASTRA, the largest recruitment by any company in the world from a single campus.[2]

Campus facilities

The campus occupies a built up area of over 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2)[3] and houses a population of over 13,000 students.

Ranking

College rankings

SASTRA was ranked 25 among engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2017.[4] Careers360 has given it the second best rating, "AAAA+", among engineering colleges in 2017.[5] and ranked 4th in best private university in India 2017.[6]

Festivals

The first edition of Kuruksastra was held on 2–3 March 2007.[7] The second edition of Kuruksastra was on 6–9 March 2008. It started the tradition of hosting musical celebrities for a "Pro Nite" show with singers such as Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik, Mahathi, Pop Shalini, stephen devasey and Suchitra. It had over 1200 participants, making it one of the largest such festivals in the country.[8]

Clubs

  • ELS - The English Literary Society, which is a club that conducts literary events such as JAM (Just-a-minute), Dumb Charades, Crossword, Debate, Shipwreck, Spin-a-yarn, Block & Tackle and Quizzes on a daily basis.
  • RCS -Robotics club @ SASTRA ,which is a club deals with robotics related stuff making students to get hands on experience in this field.
