Page count in Google Books E-Books

Does anyone knows what is the correlation between page numbering in books downloaded from Google Play and their paper counterparts? I'm translating the article about Barbara Jane Harrison for Russian Wikipedia. To clarify some issues in the original article I bought the book Ottaway, Susan (2008). "Appendix 2". Fire over Heathrow, The Tragedy of Flight 712. Barnsley: Pen and Sword Books. p. 166. ISBN 978-1-84415-739-6. {{cite book}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |month= (help) from Google Play and downloaded it on my smartphone. The book looks just like a scanned copy of the paper book (if viewd in so called "original format"). But to my astonishment I found that information in the original article that is referenced to the book is contained not on the pages specified in the references but on quite different pages. And now I'm bewildered about how I should reference information in the Russian article (since I have made minor or, perhaps, not so minor corrections and clarifications). To be clear, there no page numbers "printed" on the images of pages themselves. But there is a page counter in the viewer and it honestly counts pages from the first one as you browse them. Эйхер (talk) 18:29, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The pagination of different paper editions of a particular title can vary markedly, since there are a number of different book formats, and even in the same format both the size of the type font used (hence the average number of words per line) and the leading (spacing) between them (hence the number of lines per page) can vary from edition to edition. Any E-book will also be subject to such variations, whether it's a direct page-by-page copy of a particular paper edition, or a complete resetting for the e-edition. Long story short, in general there might be a one-to-one correspondance between a particular pair of paper edition and e-book edition, or there might be none. However, I have no specific knowledge of Google play editions. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.221.83.136 (talk) 17:37, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Эйхер: - I've done some work on the en-Wiki article on BJH, and have a copy of the book in question. I can assist with queries about page numbers. Please use my talk page for any questions. Mjroots (talk) 13:25, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Google does not change the format so they keep the pagenumbers like they scan the book. Its best to stick to that if you use exactly the references google uses on their "About this book"-page or simply use a reference containing the google books link like

<ref name="Ottaway2008">Susan Ottaway. ''[https://books.google.com/books?id=E66gCgAAQBAJ Fire over Heathrow: The tragedy of flight 712]''. Pen and Sword; 22 September 2008. [[International Standard Book Number|ISBN]] [[Special:BookSources/978-1-84468-566-0 |978-1-84468-566-0]]. p. 166.</ref>[1]

I use Wikipedia citation tool for Google Books to generate these. --Kharon (talk) 06:37, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chrome extension for mining block

Italian news broadcaster Striscia la notizia, advice to install extension in Google Chrome for miner block, but I found two extensions: No Coin - Block miners on the web! and minerBlock. Which is the best? --151.49.99.187 (talk) 21:02, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would recommend a more general approach like ScriptSafe or alike clones of the famous NoScript for Mozilla-based browsers. Any tinkering with blocking addones like that may lead to websites not working anymore tho, since the siteowner will try to enforce their Schemes to make some pennies from your visite, be it commercials, mining scripts or worse, and thus try to detect and circumvent your attempts to block their scripts. --Kharon (talk) 07:02, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Would using the same devices that are used for tattoo removal work for removing white scars?

Would using the same devices that are used for tattoo removal work for removing white scars? Futurist110 (talk) 07:13, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Tattoo removal explains how the laser system works. As that involves breaking down the ink pigments into minute particles that the body can then remove, I don't see how it could do anything about scars which contain no coloured substances for the laser to work on. There are laser treatments for reducing scars, but the process is different, and involves burning off a layer of skin to allow regrowth (see Scar) Wymspen (talk) 11:46, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I specifically went to a facial plastic surgeon and asked about this. He said that it would make the scar puff up in the short term and look just as bad if not worse in the long term. The only solution he offered me is to carefully cut the scar open, trim the scar from the opening, and do a much better job of closing it to try and make a smaller scar. But, I'm now a teacher. Having a big jagged scar that cuts down from the top of my forhead, over my eye, and down to my jaw helps. I never have students give me attitude like the other teachers talk about. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 15:13, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any online ad networks which are not at risk of being a malware vector?

Question as above. I have been selectively blocking scripts pretty much as long as I've been online (started with Proxomitron, and now use Firefox with Noscript, and I'm about to setup Greasemonkey with an anti-anti-adblocker script) but the need to do that has given me a small attack of conscience. I actually wish I could selectively allow some sites whose content I value to run at least non-intrusive, Google search type text ads, but I'm concerned about the malware risk. Programmatic advertising, AFAIK, is unfixably vulnerable to bad guys using it to spread malicious scripts. Am I right about that, or does a way to manage the risk exist? I'm not sure if Adblock Plus has this handled (never used it). What about The Guardian newspaper, which actually hosts its own ads on its own dedicated domain?

I can disrupt tracking by only letting whitelisted sites see my referer or save persistent cookies (the rest are cleared when I close Firefox) and only logging into the usual suspects as and when I need them, so I'm not so concerned about privacy. Just malware, and obnoxious screen-hogging or autoplaying video ads.

Hope this makes sense, and thank you in advance. 129.67.117.221 (talk) 18:05, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's an easy way to solve this. I have the same concerns and use similar tools, but really I'm not sure you can trust any website these days. Even Forbes, of all places, has infected people by accident. Adblock Plus by default allows "some non-intrusive advertising", which has been implied to mean networks that pay Adblock Plus developers, but I'm not sure what that would be, I see the same things with and without that option, so I presume NoScript kills everything.
That being said, I've seen some small sites return to non-active-content ads, i.e. simple GIFs and JPEGs statically loaded. This can be blocked by Adblock Plus and similar programs if you desire but not by NoScript, and ostensibly has a much smaller chance of doing damage to your PC, as one would have to exploit image handling specifically, and if there's a bug there you're at risk on any website with any ad blocker unless you're browsing with Lynx and such. 93.136.42.200 (talk) 19:08, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agree there is no good solution. In my experience, you are currently doing the best thing: FF/NoScript. True, it breaks much of the web, but I'd rather be annoyed by crippled shitty webpages than annoyed by malware/autoplay etc. Also, I've found that if you have a force gently nudging you away from sites that ask to load scripts from a zillion different places, you often end up getting better content ;) SemanticMantis (talk) 16:31, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that ad provider Project Wonderful only allows flat graphics as advertisements. Such advertisements themselves are generally considered safe.
However, clicking the banner could still lead to an unsavory site. And there's always the (small) chance that at some point in the future security holes will be found allowing flat .jpg,.png, or .gif files to carry malware. ApLundell (talk) 21:02, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reference used from the 1964 Fidelity Manor High School Yearbook

The info is very informative about Fidelity Manor High School. My mother, Joy Mackey, attended in 1964. As an child I remember seeing her pictures. No one kept any. I want to located a yearbook and/or pictures from this school. Newspaper archives will be ok. Let me know where to go to view them, preferably obtain pictures. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Twpedia (talkcontribs) 18:13, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are several online archives of yearbooks, one of these may help you. Classmates.com is one that I found. I'm not particularly recommending them, but it came up early in a google search for "yearbooks online". --Jayron32 20:33, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes the school's own library or the library in the city or county has a collection of such yearbooks you can peruse.Edison (talk) 22:35, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's also possible the school that replaced Fidelity might have a collection. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:38, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dodoma, Tanzania map wrong

I note that the Singida Region and Dodoma Region maps in our Tanzania page are the same - Signida is correct and Dodoma needs editing. I've mentioned this on the Tanzania talk page but I don't know how to go about changing it. Hayttom

They are actually on the Regions of Tanzania page. Wymspen (talk) 15:14, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, yes, I suppose so. But what can be done? Hayttom (talk) 19:12, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Very little - you either work out how to make the change (I don't know either) or wait till someone who does know how to do it spots the Talk Page entry. I have removed the incorrect map - which may inspire someone to try and replace it. Wymspen (talk) 20:48, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
User:Sémhur made the maps, might be worth asking him to fix it. 78.0.213.2 (talk) 05:37, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Somerset County, New Jersey

The link to File:Freiheitsstatue NYC full.jpg says it is on the page for Somerset County, New Jersey. An IP editor asked about it on the county's talk page. It doesn't seem to belong, as that county is inland. But the odd thing is that he can see the picture on the page and I can't. And If I open the page in edit mode, there is no text matching the file name. What might I be overlooking? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:53, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It turns out that the statue picture is embedded in Template:New York metropolitan area. That explains why it's there. What's still unexplained is why he's apparently seeing it upon opening the page, whereas I cannot unless I un-hide the template. Might he have a setting to automatically un-hide templates? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:57, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure why he sees it outside of the navbox. I was about to say that it was in the navbox at the bottom, but you found it. --Jayron32 03:58, 6 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
