Patliputra University (abbreviated PPU) is a collegiate public state university located in Patna, India. It was established by an act of State Legislature in 2018. As a collegiate university, its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and affiliated colleges. It has 125 colleges including 25 constituent colleges with jurisdiction over 2 districts namely Patna and Nalanda in Bihar.^[2]

History

In 2015, the education minister of Bihar announced that Magadh University (MU) may be divided into two or three universities due to the difficulties faced in managing the colleges of oversized MU. In July month of the same year, then vice-chancellor of MU, Mohammad Ishtiyaque decided to strengthen the Patna branch office of the university to reduce the student's need to visit the university headquarters situated at Bodh Gaya. As a part of the strengthening process, a committee was set up to monitor the expansion and growth of the Patna branch office.^[3]

On 30 July 2016, Bihar cabinet passed Bihar State Universities (Amendement) Bill 2016 and approved the creation of Patliputra University by bifurcating the Magadh University.^[4]^[5] A notice was issued in October 2017 inviting application from candidates for the posts of vice–chancellor and pro–vice chancellor.^[6] On 19 March 2018, Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik appointed Girish Kumar Choudhary and Gulab Chand Ram Jaiswal as the pro–vice chancellor and vice–chancellor of the Patliputra University respectively under the Bihar State University (Amendment) Act 1976.^[7]

Administration

The staff of Patliputra University will be created by dividing the staff of Magadh University.^[8]^[6] Gulab Chand Ram Jaisawal of Banaras Hindu University’s faculty of commerce is the vice–chancellor of the university whereas Girish Kumar Choudhary from NIT Patna's electrical department is the pro–vice–chancellor.^[2] Governor of Bihar Satya Pal Malik serves as the chancellor of Patliputra University.^[9]

Academics

Admitted students of Magadh University (MU) will continue to remain under MU till the awarding of thier degrees.^[10] The first academic year of Patliputra University will start from 2018-19.^[11] The programmes being offered at the University will remain the same as the ones being offered at Magadh University.^[10]

The university plans to launch postgraduate departements in science, commerce and arts stream at university level after many of the postgraduate departments went to MU after the bifurcation.^[12] Some of the better educational institutions of Patna will come under Patliputra University after bifurcation.^[2]

Campus

The university is headquartered in Patna and will operate from Magadh University's branch office on Kankarbagh old bypass in Rajendra Nagar, Patna.^[13]^[2] The permanent campus will be located at Beur.^[14]
