What's the best place to deal with [[Matador Network]], the creation and maintenance of which is a long series of redlink SPAs, some of which have made edits to other company articles, mostly in the digital media field. It's obviously UPE, probably socking, possibly an actual company who is hiring experienced editors as the tone is plausible (though the sources are not). I tagged it, and I'm thinking of AfDing it after a bit of research, but this feels bigger than that and I'm not sure where to go with it. == Solent University logo update ==

Hi,

Re: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solent_University

I would like to update the logo and image that appears on the Solent University wikipedia page, as well as the motto. I am the Head of Marketing and Communications at Solent, and have noted that the logo is our old one. Google is currently pulling the information through from wikipedia when searching for the University, meaning that prospective students are seeing our old information on the search results page when they search for us. I'm keen to get the information updated as quickly as possible, but am not keen to have to go through the steps of making edits on other pages in order to update our page.

Please can you confirm how I can make this edit?

Thanks,

Leonora Clement
Head of Marketing and Communications
Solent University

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    "Check date values in: |accessdate="

In Rockefeller University, I recently added a footnote, and got a "Check date values in: |accessdate=" warning. I have no idea what is wrong with the date I gave. Could someone have a look, and possibly fix it? Thanks in advance. If you are answering me here, please ping. - Jmabel | Talk 04:00, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: |accessdate=2020-11-16 says you accessed the source 10 days in the future. Unless you're a time traveller, that can't be right. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:06, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    Doh! 2020-11-06. But, yes, I am a time traveller, aren't we all? - Jmabel | Talk 15:24, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem with kelvin calculation

I was recently reading the [Ic page] and I notice when it referred to the temperature at which the substance forms it said 'kelvins'. As kelvin is an absolute value it is singular. However, when I went to change it, I realised it was a function of the code used to write it.
    In this instance the code,
    '{{convert|130|and|220|K|C|}}'
    appeared as;
    '130 and 220 kelvins (−143 and −53 degrees Celsius)'
I was wondering if this is simply a problem with the sites code or is a bug of the language it's written in?

    Vandalism help request from Sdkb

I have noticed some vandalism at Backdoor (computing). Namely, what appears to be an advertisement for a "digital marketing" company has been inserted at the very beginning of the article. Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you, 2601:647:C900:98D:B08A:1881:2D6:6E18 (talk) 05:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The {{Information security}} template was overwritten by an advert, but has been restored. If you are still seeing the damage in a particular article, a "purge" should fix it - see Wikipedia:Purge for how to do this. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:40, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Mentor?

Anyone want to be my mentor? I need guidance in editing. Thank you. FcoonerBCA (talk) 06:12, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

FcoonerBCA, you could try Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user. Otherwise, WP:Teahouse is a good place to ask questions about editing. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:15, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Copy and paste

I have asked about how to create a template for a WikiProject, and was told to go to [[[WP: BannerMeta]]. I have tried what is says on there on the sandbox of my userpage, but was not able to produce the template. Is there any way in which it is possible to copy and paste information on Wikipedia? The information about templates at WP: BannerMeta is very long-winded and complicated, and I might find it easier to follow if I could copy it and paste it to my sandbox. Many thanks, Vorbee (talk) 09:25, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what you mean, Vorbee. There is no page called WP:BannerMeta. If you want to copy markup, edit the page (or "View source" if it is protected) and copy from the edit window. --ColinFine (talk) 14:20, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: I think Vorbee is referring to this section of the help desk from a few days ago. @Vorbee: the template {{WikiProject Mysticism}} has already been created by El cid, el campeador. If you want to edit the template, you can do so there - you don't need to do it in your userspace. Seagull123 Φ 17:17, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How can I have my principal's profile on wikipaedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.184.252.200 (talk) 10:08, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@41.184.252.200: I am afraid that you have a common misunderstanding of WIkipedia. Wikipedia does not contain profiles, Wikipedia has articles about subjects that meet Wikipedia's definition of notability, in this case of a noteable person. Further, Wikipedia articles dont belong to their subjects. Victor Schmidt (talk) 10:36, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You may create a Wikipedia Article about the principal, but only if the principal is notable by our definition: see WP:N. If you find several sources that establish notability, then come back here for help on the next step. -Arch dude (talk) 17:18, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Thank you!

Hi and thanks so much for the reply! I'll use the template but I am confused about inserting the infobox into the biography. Also, I think if the infobox goes to the right area of the page it will be good to place the other pictures in the left but I can not see how to do this. By the way, the Cesar Marolla page is here:

Dan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan.ferratti (talk • contribs) 16:21, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

For basics, please see Template:Infobox academic. You can use the template there to create an infobox; simply fill in biographical information in that template to create an infobox. However, I cannot see a page for a Cesar Marolla. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 16:26, 5 November 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan.ferratti (talkcontribs)

Hello, Dan.ferratti. You simply add the code at the top. An easy way to do it is to choose a similar article with an infobox, "Edit" it and copy the whole of the infobox code (including the double curly brackets at the start and end), then paste it into Draft:Cesar Marolla. --ColinFine (talk) 18:07, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dan.ferratti: Before you put a lot of work into an article, please carefully read Wikipedia:Notability (academics). Unfortunately, it is a lot harder to show notability for an academic than for say an athlete or a Pokemon character, simply because academics do not attract the attention of reporters. Once you are sure of notability, then take a look at several articles about other academics and pick one whose format appeals to you. You can use it as a worked example. -Arch dude (talk) 18:12, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    U.S. Embassy image

I assume that this image is suitable for uploading because it is the work of a U.S. Embassy, although the license tag does not appear to meet Commons criteria. Can this be uploaded as a free work? And if so, can you upload it for me? I'm not able to copy it into the Commons template because it is a webpage, not a jpeg file. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:43, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid not, Yoninah. The page says "Some rights reserved", and if you drill down, it is licence CC-BY-ND, which is not compatible with Commons' requirements. --ColinFine (talk) 21:57, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Yoninah:If that picture was taken by a US government photographer during the course of his work, then the photographer made a mistake then uploading it to Flickr with that copyright, but we cannot make that assumption. Your best next step is to contact the embassy and ask if they have the image on a government web site somewhere. -Arch dude (talk) 15:59, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Dianna Cohen

    Can we start a page?

Dianna Cohen ( born May 13- Artist and Activist , American Based in Los Angeles, CA.

In 2007, Dianna first learned about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and spent a year developing a proposal to travel to the middle of the Pacific Ocean to harvest the “plastic island” and make art out of it, raising awareness about the plastic pollution crisis in our oceans. The project was the perfect opportunity to meld her love for the ocean with the primary medium of her artwork — plastic bags — and to raise awareness and inspire change.

As she learned more about the issue of plastic pollution, she realized that we could not simply “clean it up” but instead, needed to “turn off the tap” and stop the flow of plastic into our oceans and our lives.

As a natural extension of this idea, in 2009, Dianna with other thought-leaders, scientists, and activists, founded Plastic Pollution Coalition in order to raise awareness and promote solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis.

In 2010, Dianna was invited to give a TED Talk on Mission Blue in the Galapagos Islands. Entitled “Tough Truths About Plastic Pollution,” her talk has been viewed more than 1million times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jgorman60 (talkcontribs) 23:18, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Allison Baver - Women in Red Wiki Project

    Dear Wikipedia,

I saw that you have a Women in Red Project and I am one of the women who hopes to get your support with elevating my wiki profile to be equal and to match my male piers in the world of sports and entertainment. I have found that my wiki page in comparison to my male counterparts with equal and even much lesser credentials than me have complete and actually amazing wikipedia pages while my page is significantly under-represented and does not grasp my complete and most accurate bio even a little. If you can kindly have someone reach me from my website from your women in red project or anyone that can work with me to elevate it, that would be amazing. We are preparing an announcement for release this week and press will be looking, so I had to finally reach out. I have put together a master bio and link of news articles and also newspaper.com has 1500 news articles for the most accurate bio and easy updating by one of your writers.

Really appreciate all you are doing for women on your platform with the Women in Red project and appreciate your support!

Contacting Editors of the BBC School Radio Page

I'd very much like to contact the editors of the BBC School Radio about a project a few retired producers are engaged in with the British Library. Not interested in adding anything to the page but just to let the editors know what we are doing and the research we are carrying out Can you help please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Extant45 (talkcontribs) 08:34, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Extant45: Welcome but you seem to have misunderstood the nature of our editors here. They are random volunteers, laypersons with no connection to the BBC (beyond perhaps watching it), largely anonymous, completely unorganized. (Incidentally, as someone who appears to be working with or for the BBC, you may want to check out our conflict of interest rules).
If you don't have material that could be added to the article, then the message to the editors doesn't fit the site's purpose. (Sorry...)
However, if BBC School Radio is taking some sort of noteworthy action that might require updating the article, an announcement on the BBC's website would be a reliable source to support such a change. We would very much appreciate it if you provided a link to any such announcement at Talk:BBC School Radio. (Without a source, we can't update the article). Using edit request at Talk:BBC School Radio would make it more likely that someone will see any links you provide us. Ian.thomson (talk) 08:45, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    disambiguation page submission

Hi, I want to create a small disambiguation page, which I haven't done before. Although I have read the advice on style etc., I can't find the basics on how to submit a page for approval. Please could you point me in the right direction? RoachPeter (talk) 16:31, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@RoachPeter: as far as I can tell, you should be able to simply create the disambiguation page yourself, as you appear to have made enough edits/been around long enough to do so. For example, if the page is to disambiguate the word "hello", you should be able to go to Hello (disambiguation) and create the page there - replacing "hello" with the term you want to disambiguate. What is the page you want to create? If you can't do that, maybe try Wikipedia:Article wizard. Seagull123 Φ 17:31, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@RoachPeter: there are two approaches to making a dab page, and the "correct" approach depends on the relative notability of the article that is the current subject of the name. If the current name is more or less as obscure as the other articles, then rename ("move") the current article: move hello to hello (greeting), and then convert the resulting redirect into a dab page. (Also create Hello (disambiguation) as a redirect to your new dab page). If the current subject is clearly the main subject for that name, current consensus is to create the dab page as described by Seagull123. There are editors (including me) that think you should always make the subject into the dab page, because it makes it a whole lot easier to find improper links to a dab page. For example, try to find incorrect links to George Harrison that should instead go to George Harrison (civil servant). -Arch dude (talk) 18:47, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. I'm still a bit confused. The specific situation concerns two articles, one being The Priory School, Shrewsbury and the other The Priory Grammar School for Boys, Shrewsbury. To many older people in or from Shrewsbury, the name "The Priory School" refers to the latter, not the former. So I thought a disambiguation page named "The Priory School, Shrewsbury" giving links to the two schools would be helpful. RoachPeter (talk) 22:29, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@RoachPeter: I would suggest using a hatnote on The Priory School, Shrewsbury as explained in Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Hatnotes. You could also add The Priory Grammar School for Boys, Shrewsbury to the Priory School disambiguation page. TSventon (talk) 12:37, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am very confused right now, I don't think I deleted anything today, maybe I tried to change my signature, because I didn't know I was supposed to do the ~~. Genuinely a bit confused today. You get your internet service from COMCAST. COMCAST has assigned you a dynamic IP address that is changing frequently. You will continue to get these notifications as long as you are using dynamic IP addresses like this. This IP address is actually assigned to the router in your home or business or library or whatever, not to your specific computer, so other computers at the same location may be making the edits that cause the problems. The way to avoid getting these messages is to create an account and log in. -Arch dude (talk) 04:30, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think that when you tried to change your signature you edited an old version of this page and didn't notice the warning "You are editing an old revision of this page. If you publish it, any changes made since then will be removed. You may wish to edit the current revision instead." The edit did remove all changes made since the version you were editing and was therefore reverted. TSventon (talk) 12:20, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed that external links to EBSCOhost Connection are broken due to changes by EBSCOhost. These links are often used in citations when a source is available through EBSCOhost but not elsewhere. A list of such links can be seen at Special:LinkSearch/connection.ebscohost.com: for example, http://connection.ebscohost.com/c/abstracts/40100870/integral-city-evolutionary-intelligences-human-hive is linked from a citation in Integral City.

Before any action is taken, more research needs to be done. I have not been able to discover why exactly links to http://connection.ebscohost.com don't work anymore and whether there is some replacement URL. Any help in uncovering more information would be greatly appreciated.

It's important to figure this out because EBSCOhost is an important article database provider, and there are many such links in Wikipedia. Biogeographist (talk) 22:04, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We have contacts at EBSCO who might be able to help us map the URLs to un-broken ones for a bot/AWB run. If that would be helpful please ping/email/talk me :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): Yes, asking an EBSCO contact about mapping the URLs would be very helpful, please do it if possible. Biogeographist (talk) 22:29, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): One thing I know about the URL syntax is that the number in each URL is EBSCO's accession number, so if EBSCO recommends a replacement URL structure, that number could be extracted from the old URLs and inserted into the new ones. Biogeographist (talk) 22:51, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): If you are going to change all these citations, and if the url can be constructed from the accession number, I recommend that you create a template that uses the accession number as a parameter. This will avoid the need to do yet another mass change in the future. -Arch dude (talk) 04:15, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude and Samwalton9 (WMF): There is already a template, {{EBSCOhost}} (created by Genericusername57), but it has never worked for me, and I just tried the template again now with an accession number that I know I can access through my library's EZproxy, and the template still doesn't work. (By the way, the old EBSCOhost Connection links at http://connection.ebscohost.com were great because they provided plenty of information about the cited resource even to people without EBSCOhost access.) So replacing all the URLs with the template is a possible solution, but the template would need to be fixed, so the question remains: What, if anything, is EBSCO's new URL structure that permits accessing EBSCOhost resources from links on the web? I understand that I am not supposed to use the user page itself as a social medium, but may I include links to my social media accounts on it? Félix An (talk) 23:52, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it is allowed, as long as it it not promotional. See the section "Personal and privacy-breaching material" on WP:USER. Note that once you disclose this info on your userpage, it is public forever, so be careful. RudolfRed (talk) 00:31, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Eyewitness Correction

I am an eyewitness to the crimes described in the article, "2017 Fresno shooting spree." I observed the shooting of one victim, was the first person to attend to that victim, and testified in the trial. I know with certainty that information cited from the "Fresno Bee" is incorrect. If I correct the inaccuracies, what should I do for citation? Certainly secondary sources such as the "Bee" are good sources, but they are not as good as a someone who is provably a primary source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avancuren (talkcontribs) 01:37, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Thriller

    Dear Wikipedia Team, 11/8/2020 10:37 p.m. EST

I believe that the songs "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady in my Life" are as essential to Thriller as "Beat It" or "Bille Jean". So can those songs have wiki pages?

Sincerely, Thriller was taken. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thriller was taken (talkcontribs) 03:38, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Thriller was taken: A subject warrants an article if it is notable, not if it is "essential". Each of the two songs would need to have been the principle subject of multiple independent reliable sources. See WP:N. If they are notable, then they "can have" articles, but they will only get articles if some editor (for example you) decides to write the articles. See WP:YFA. -Arch dude (talk) 04:21, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Alec Trebek

I'm not really computer savvy so can someone please help me and do an edit to Alec Trebek. In the summary section with photo, birth, death, children etc...please change game show host to quiz show host out of respect for him because that is what he would have wanted Thanks Cindy — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:569:BE8F:B700:55B7:B488:9290:999A (talk) 07:26, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to make this suggestion at Talk:Alex Trebek; but please understand that Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state, not necessarily what the subject might have wanted. If you have reliable sources that use the terminology you feel should be used, please offer them. 331dot (talk) 10:17, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We believe this deletion happened in ~1-3 months or from today. Could you please: - restore page; - see who did that and why?

Thanks! Sincerely, Marijus Strončikas (Marijus Stroncikas) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MarijusStron (talkcontribs) 15:11, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, MarijusStron, but you will have to ask on lt-wiki. Each edition of Wikipedia is entirely separate, and we have no authority or knowledge of another one. Try lt:Vikipedija:Pagalbos_biuras. --ColinFine (talk) 15:21, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can't get unblocked, have tried everything

    Hello,

My account was blocked for posting an article with promotional language. The admin you flagged my account and blocked me indefinitely recommended that I read up on Wikipedia's policy on promotional posting. I did read all the policies on associations, paid editing, posting etiquette, etc. and now understand my mistake. I was able to change my username to one more appropriate and posted on my talk page my employer/client associations and my understanding of my mistake. I've requested many times to be unblocked, always disclosing that I know what I did wrong and won't do it again. However, no one will unblock me. Even when I ping the original admin who blocked me, they do not respond. I've been trying for many months to be unblocked, please help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:141D:8A6E:5078:254B:30A9:6F55 (talk) 17:24, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It will be hard for this board here to help you with any blocking issue unless we know which account is blocked. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 17:29, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, evading your block by logging out, even if it is to get help, isn't goign to help your case. 18:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victor Schmidt (talkcontribs)

    Citing book photographer credit

Aside from author, editor, and translator, a book may have a "photographs by" credit, but the CITATION template doesn't show such a keyword. I know that there's others= but what if google is finding the name of the photographer as if he's an author? From an image of the book cover, he's not an author. What keyword is there for photographer? Pi314m (talk) 02:58, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi314m:You are not restricted to using a citation template. You may use ordinary text instead of or in addition to the citation template. -Arch dude (talk) 06:55, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BennettEagle has done the creation of the Wikipedia page of this academicin and researcher, using footnotes. Why it is not published. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BennettEagle (talkcontribs) 06:22, 10 November 2020 06:22 (UTC)

@BennettEagle: As far as I can see the draft has not been re-submitted for review. If you consider that it is ready for mainspace you can request review by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of the markup. This will produce a reveiw notice. Please prepare to be patient as reviews can take 8 weeks or more. However, with this edit you removed the decline notice (please do not do this) which would have provided you with a resubmit button. I have restored it and you can now resubmit it by clicking on that button. Eagleash (talk) 06:47, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Location showing up wrong on OpenStreetMap

On Blair Park, the Open Street Map generated from Template:coords is wrong. It's supposed to be on Moraga Avenue southwest of Warren Freeway/CA13, but it shows up as being on the northeast side at Colton Boulevard and Mendoza Drive. When I put in the coordinates to either Google Maps or Open Street Map, the right location comes up. What's wrong? —Naddruf (talk ~ contribs) 08:39, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    UPE/sock farm?

What's the best place to deal with Matador Network, the creation and maintenance of which is a long series of redlink SPAs, some of which have made edits to other company articles, mostly in the digital media field. It's obviously UPE, probably socking, possibly an actual company who is hiring experienced editors as the tone is plausible (though the sources are not). I tagged it, and I'm thinking of AfDing it after a bit of research, but this feels bigger than that and I'm not sure where to go with it. —valereee (talk) 09:52, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Solent University logo update

    Thanks,

Leonora Clement Head of Marketing and Communications Solent University
