- Comment: @Robert McClenon: it looks like Millennium Line Broadway extension is a redirect to Millennium Line#Expansion plans. This does look like it have enough coverage to pass GNG (though I would suggest that the original author add some of the sources from the Millenium Line article to this one), the redirect just need to be fixed. The Broadway Subway is an extension of the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark to Arbutus station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The extension began major construction work in May 2021, with the line scheduled to open in 2025.[1]
Route
The Broadway Subway will start at VCC-Clark station and continue along an elevated guideway before going into a tunnel, at the site of Great Northern Way-Emily Carr. The tunnel continues under Brunswick Street until reaching the intersection of Main Street and Broadway where Mount Pleasant station is located. After that the line continues along Broadway until Arbutus Street, with Arbutus, South Granville, Oak-VGH, and Broadway-City Hall stations located along the line.[2][3]
History
Original plan
The Broadway Subway was originally conceived as the section of the Millennium Line west of Commercial Drive (now Commercial-Broadway station), outlined in Metro Vancouver's Livable Region Strategic Plan that also included the Evergreen Extension.[4] The Broadway Subway was planned to run underneath from VCC-Clark to the False Creek Flats, (in a tunnel under Prince Edward Street and 10th Avenue) with the line ending at Granville Street.[5] However, when VCC-Clark station opened, the line was deemed "not a regional priority" by Translink.[6]
In 2008, the Government of British Columbia annouced a commitment to the expansion of the Millennium Line to the University of British Columbia as part of a package to reduce global warming.[7] It was not clear what route the line would take, but it was hinted that the subway would use less cut and cover tunneling to minimize the disruption of buisness along Broadway and avoid problems seen in the Canada Line construction along Cambie Street.[8][9] This plan failed to materialize.
In 2018, the provincial government approved the construction of the Broadway Subway Project, an initiative in which the Millennium Line will extend west to Arbutus Street and add six new stations.[10]
On February 15, 2019, the Mayor's Council again approved an extension of the Millenium Line to UBC, though funding for the section beyond Arbutus station has not been secured.[11][12] In 2020 the contract to build the subway was awarded to the Broadway Subway Project Corporation, an Acciona-Ghella joint venture.[13][14]
Major construction at all stations began in May 2021,[15][16] with the extension to Arbutus scheduled to open in 2025.[17][18]
Future
The phase beyond Arbutus Street is currently unfunded, however the extension could be built soon.[19][20] Translink is currently studying the potential for a Skytrain line to UBC.[21] The president of the University of British Columbia is proposing there be three stations at UBC due to the size of the campus.[22]
