Resident Evil[a] is an American action horror streaming television series developed by Andrew Dabb for Netflix. Based on the video game series of the same name by Capcom, it is the second television adaptation of the franchise after the animated miniseries Infinite Darkness, and the eighth live-action adaptation after the film series of the same name. The series take place in its own original universe but feature the games series storyline as its backstory and basis.

The series features an ensemble cast led by Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, Ella Balinska and Adeline Rudolph as Wesker's adopted children while Tamara Smart and Siena Agudong portrays their younger self, and Paola Núñez as Evelyn Marcus, James Marcus's daughters. It alternates between two timelines, following Jade and Billie Wesker during their days in New Raccoon City where they discover their father's and Umbrella Corporation's dark secrets, and 14 years in the future, where Jade tries to survive the end of the world.

In 2019, Netflix began development with Constantin Film, the rightsholders who have previously produced the film series, as the production company involved, as well as Moonlighting Films, a production company which worked on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). The series was formally announced in 2020, having been greenlit as an eight-episode series with each episode one hour in length. Dabb was hired as showrunner alongside a number of other Netflix projects. Due to delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, production was delayed eight months and took place from February to July 2021.[1][2]

Resident Evil premiered on July 14, 2022.[3] The series received mixed reviews from critics, with some praised its action sequences, visuals and the performances of the cast (particularly Reddick and Núñez), but criticized its writing, pacing, lack of originality and deviations from the source material.

Plot

The series' main plot is spread out over two points in time – 2022 and 2036, with a gap of some 14 years.[4][5] The "past" plotline deals with the struggles of 14 year old half-twins Billie and Jade, the children of Dr. Albert Wesker and conceived through suspicious circumstances. Their lives take a dramatic turn when Albert is awarded an executive position at the struggling Umbrella Corporation that once employed him, and they move to Umbrella's planned community, New Raccoon City. While there the two girls stumble onto the dark secrets behind their origins and Umbrella's dark legacy, while their father coordinates a response to the outbreak of a retroviral bioweapon called T-virus.

In the "present" of 2036, the T-virus has reduced human civilization to 300 million refugees living in walled city-states and other settlements, surrounded by the six billion "Zeroes" who contracted the disease and became roaming gangs of cannibal mutants. The most powerful organization left on Earth is the Umbrella Corporation, backed by its military arsenal, who are conducting a global manhunt for Jade.

In London 2036, Jade Wesker (Balinska) baits Pack #2426, a group of mutant humans known as 'zeroes'. Accidentally injuring herself, she is pursued by the blood-lusting pack which is incinerated by the defence mechanism around her personal space. The resultant noise attracts a gigantic caterpillar which attacks her.

In a flashback sequence to 2022, 14 year old Jade, her vegan 'twin' sister Billie and their father Albert have just arrived in New Raccoon City where Albert's work is vital to the Umbrella Corporation. The on-screen caption notes "Three months before the end".

Jade settles down easily, despite her initial overt resentment. Billie runs afoul of a bully and experiences PTSD of a previous incident in another school where she lost self-control and injured her assailant.

After her ordeal, Billie meets her father for lunch, observing animals being transported in his automated building. Umbrella has openly disavowed any link to animal testing. She and Jade gain entry to Umbrella to document the animals and Billie inadvertently releases a mutant Doberman which chases the girls and savages Billie before Jade can kill it.

Back in 2036, Jade is saved by apparent good samaritans and is taken to a stronghold to receive medical treatment. There she learns that her saviours plan to hand her over to Umbrella as she is considered a high value target. As Umbrella land at the stronghold, the leader, Baxter, orders a massacre of everyone, with the exception of Jade who must be captured alive.

In the ensuing carnage, Jade makes her escape and jumps into the massed horde of zeroes encircling the stronghold.

2022 Billie lies wounded on the floor of Umbrella HQ after being mauled by the dog. She comes too, but is bleeding out and can't run without Jade carrying her. Umbrella's U.S.S. operators make their way to the building, but they are instead discovered by Albert who offers to perform emergency surgery himself at home, unwilling to risk them going to Umbrella's hospital. As he wipes the CCTV, he turns back to the pool of blood left by the dog and soaks his skin in it.

With the girls gone, Albert stays behind and surrenders to the guards, where he claims the facility has fallen victim to a cyberattack which released the safety lock for the dog. While the guards search for any signs of intruders in the lab, they are approached by Umbrella CEO Evelyn Marcus. Marcus accepts the story, but is more concerned by Wesker's opposition to their new Joy product; as it was made through t-Virus research it poses a theoretical risk of causing mutations, though she believes it to be a very low risk. The Tijuana lab is passed off as a freak accident, and Umbrella is doing what it can to suppress the story. Wesker leaves as Evelyn has a dispute with her wife, who has only now heard she is back from her Tokyo trip.

At home, Albert attends to Billie, and is forced to explain the dog was being treated for a "rare genetic disease". He has his doubts she will suffer the same disease and, compared with SARS-CoV-2 she has no need to be in quarantine. Albert demands the two girls promise they'd never mention trespassing, warning them that Umbrella was working on classified "government" projects which risk would guarantee a severe punishment if discovered.

In the morning, Albert checks on Billie by examining her corneas for discolouration. Jade watches him, then goes on her laptop to investigate Umbrella's Tijuana lab she saw on the video. She finds one website claiming to have "The Truth", but it is blocked by her ISP. Albert arrives and takes her to school, while Billie must remain home as a precaution. At work, Albert examines Billie's blood under a microscope and injects it into a lab rat to examine; he soon begins convulsing and injects himself with more of Billie's blood to stabilise his condition.

Jade arrives late for school, hearing from her friends that Simon has gotten a hold of a Deca-Dence; Jade is confused why people would be excited over anime, and is told that as an ISP Umbrella has blocked all porn, torrenting and pirated streaming sites with Simon using his computer skills to bypass the firewall just for this one series. Jade asks him to help her access a particular website, which he agrees to do in exchange for her necklace. The website is successfully bypassed, and discusses stolen reports of an outbreak at the facility that caused infected employees to begin eating one another. Jade uses the site's comment section to post her email for further discussions.

Back at Umbrella HQ, Albert meets with Evelyn in her office, who wants him to fix whatever problems Joy has immediately so it can be shipped in two months. Albert warns her of the risks, as she herself experienced a viral outbreak when she was younger, but she is not interested. Instead she shifts the conversation to Albert's physical ailment, which only she knows about, and mocks how he has gone from needing weekly injections to daily from his "cute little blood bags".

At home, Billie checks herself in the mirror and begins throwing up after seeing herself bleeding. She notices Pablo is irritated by her. Meanwhile, Jade has a video call with Angel Rubio, admin on the website. He is an investigative reporter, formerly of The Baja Post, who has become obsessed with the unusually high incident rate at the company's lab. In one case last week, a researcher went on a rampage and killed nine people three days after being bitten by a lab animal. His story went unpublished due to Umbrella's efforts to kill the story, and he was fired. Their conversation is cut when Jade is found by Ms. Underwood and told to go to class; the reporter is shocked to hear her name as "Wesker", being familiar with that name.

Billie is walking Pablo around town, but due to his agitation he keeps pulling her and finally wriggles free. Pablo runs into the arms of a man, who becomes suspicious when he tries to bite her and suspects she is a dognaper. When he insists on taking him to the shelter, Billie punches the man in the face and seizes Pablo. When she gets home she begins bleeding from her mouth. Meanwhile the rat begins to suffer extreme reactions to Billie's contaminated blood and begins smashing the glass.

2036 Having jumped out into the Dead Land to escape Umbrella, Jade is forced to fend for herself against the Zero horde. As a high priority asset, Baxter orders his men to focus on killing the Zeroes to protect her so she can be captured. Yen makes an escape attempt in a modified car, which Jade jumps onto. He is scared she will lure Umbrella to him, and before Jade can convince him to work with her they are attacked by a pack of Zeroes who tear him apart. Jade takes the car away.

Jade drives out to Dover, arriving at daybreak. In the past month the Freehold has signed a security contract with Umbrella, who's regular U.S.S. patrols prevent the spread of infection. Jade keeps quiet when driving in and is not noticed. Heading into an apartment block above a market, she meets with Melinda, who's husband Barry helped traffic her in from Cairo but he is away. Using Melinda's sat-link, Jade warns Arjun Umbrella is after her, and is told to cross the channel to Calais. While the Brotherhood who control Calais have a bad reputation, they will never allow Umbrella to enter. Melinda is agitated by Jade's presence, and threatens to report her to Umbrella if she doesn't leave. Her threat fails when Jade hears a sound in the bathroom, and discovers Barry has been chained up in the bathroom after being infected and fed dead cats. Jade enters the room to recover his pocket book which lists his trafficker contacts, but he is able to rip his hand off and attack. Melinda is saved, but she is distraught at her husband's death.

After Jade's departure, Baxter arrives to meet with Melinda after the drones identified a "person of interest". Melinda identifies the woman in an accompanying photograph but says she is gone. Baxter is curious as to why Jade would come there, and moreso when he is told he isn't allowed in the bathroom.

Elsewhere in town, Jade makes her way into a pub playing punk music. Having read through Barry's book, she interrupts Charon, a people trafficker who accepts hefty payments to take people to Calais. As Barry's goods shipment failed to arrive, he wants her to pay the debt before even considering getting herself a ride.

At night, Jade heads to the pier to hide herself among the refugees. As a ferry arrives, the trafficker directing them is shot from a distance and the group are confronted by a U.S.S. convoy backed-up by an armed drone. The crowd is forced on the run with the drone killing one after the other while Baxter looks on from his stationary vehicle. -->

2022 Evelyn Marcus is being interviewed about her new efforts to improve Umbrella's image with "Joy" following the company's long history of scandal and poor stock performance. As the daughter of Umbrella's disgraced founder, and someone who experienced Raccoon City, Evelyn has a personal drive to rebuild Umbrella.

Jade heads home to check on Billie's condition, but while she is clearly not OK Jade accepts her need to be alone. Albert briefly arrives to check-up on Billie, but Jade blocks him and he instead takes spare blood samples to his lab which he uses to test on the rat again. Jade meanwhile gets an email from Simon, who has downloaded a page from Angel's website and sent it to her. It details allegations of illegal human experimentation conducted by Umbrella. This includes records recovered by an unknown source, including information on Lisa Trevor. In the lab Wesker determines that, based on the 72-hour average before murderous impulses take over, he has 52 hours to treat Billie's condition.

In the morning, Billie gets up disoriented but wanting to get out of the house and is able to bluff being all better. At school she becomes distressed after being hypersensitive to the sound of Simon's skateboard, which she passes off as coming down from the drugs Albert gave her.

In the evening, Evelyn holds an emergency board meeting regarding Tijuana and Joy. Umbrella is primarily a government contractor, but Evelyn wants to shift it towards consumer medication with Joy. Wesker's thoughts on Joy are well known, with Janet raising those concerns. When asked to refute the rumours, Albert talks of how Joy can indeed be a miracle drug, but it "contains a derivative of the T-virus", which was itself developed for the US military, and in the event of an overdose - estimated to be equivalent to 20,000 pills - will trigger viral production, mutate the patient and lead to transmissibility of Cannibal Disease. Due to the absurdly large requirement for a remotely lethal dose, Evelyn debunks any real concerns of an outbreak or in delaying the drug for alteration. Furthermore, a modified Joy developed by another team has discovered it to have increased mental effects, going from an antidepressant to something that will eliminate anger when exposed to certain visual triggers.

After the meeting, Evelyn returns to the lab to give Albert the good news that the board has decided in her favour, and thanks to her "charm" the FDA will forgo human testing and allow the drug to get on shelves ASAP. The mind-altering effects of the enhanced Joy is, to Evelyn, prefect for ensuring a better world, half-joking they could end global warming with it. Albert is still struggling with his research, and offers to instead see it from Evelyn's perspective - that if they have a cure already they can make billions selling it to halt an outbreak.

At Raccoon High School, Billie wanders the cafeteria but the loud noises of the students scare her off. After lunch Jade is in class watching Ms Foster give a lecture on viruses and their symptoms and becomes concerned, while Billie begins suffering from hallucinations that scare her into going home, where she sees herself in the mirror as a bloodied corpse. Jade and Simon talk about getting more notes from Angel after class, but a surprise update to Umbrella's firewall means that can no longer happen until he knows the code, but he is reluctant to do so as the timing is suspicious. Billie briefly returns to school to meet-up with Jade and catches her in an argument with Simon; she overreacts and punches both before leaving. Following her home, Jade talks things out with Billie about the webpage, but tries to assure Billie her emotional volatility is only the result of the drugs she is taking.

2036 plot As the refugees make their way down the coast, they are harassed by a drone firing "rubber" bullets while Baxter's convoy slowly pursues. Jade picks up hers on and heads into a warehouse to hide him. After taking control of the dockyard, Baxter orders the USS to continue their search, ignorant of the seriously wounded civilians bleeding out. Inside the warehouse, Jade finds the boy's parents, Mark and Enya, and hides with them. The two planned to smuggle 40-year old spirits to Calais by ferry to make a life for themselves, but will have to resort to giving it away to less savoury smugglers who plan instead to go through the Channel Tunnel.

Jade drives off with the family, where Mark introduces himself as a Yorkshireman who shielded himself in the ancient walled city of York, but it eventually fell to an outbreak. They arrive at another stretch of coastline where a human trafficker accepts jewellery as payment for transport. The route is dangerous, with three fatalities recorded in the past month. When he accepts payment, the people are driven out to their planned crossing point. Baxter's search takes him to the trafficker, who refuses to give any details and insults him and Umbrella.

During the drive, Jade talks with Enya about each other's lives, with Jade saying how she works for a university - The University - which intends to reintroduce the old world's knowledge when the pandemic ends. The convoy reaches the French side of the Channel Tunnel, where they intend to offload through a service hatch. They are forced to remain in their cars when they hear Lickers nearby. Baxter soon arrives, after getting the answer out of the trafficker. He and the USS operators made a lot of noise, and are set upon by the Lickers who also begin breaking into the refugee convoy, killing several people in the process. The armed traffickers, including Devil Horns, attempt to group back together and escape but are reduced considerably in number. Finally the survivors get through a service hatch and leave the USS to deal with the Lickers.

The band go through the flooded tunnels, where they discover Liam is infected. Enya and Mark reveal he was bitten three days prior; taking the ferry would have required being checked for bites, so in reality this was always their intended route. Devil Horns interrupts the discussion, being chased and killed by giant spiders that have made their territory underground. Mark grabs a pipe as a weapon and heads out in search of it. Although he is able to bash the spider, it is not as wounded as he believes and quickly tears him apart sideways. It chases Jade, who lowers a shutter on it, finally killing it. She returns to Enya with a sick Liam, but she refuses to leave her son alone and Jade is forced to continue her journey alone.

Jade gets out of the service tunnel in France, but finds Baxter waiting for her. He is shot and wounded, while the surviving operators are detained by Brotherhood militants. Jade is mistaken for another Umbrella operator and knocked out. -->

2022 In a flashback to Tijuana, Angel is investigating Umbrella, where he interviews Susana Franco, the wife of a deceased factory worker. She describes how he was bitten at work, developed a rash around the wound and became hypersensitive to light and sound. Over time he became more and more aggressive over a period of three days before supposedly killing people, but even that is not confirmed due to corporate secrecy. During the interview she hands Angel a USB drive to study, which contains a folder marked "1998" and containing a document titled "RACCOON CITY INCIDENT".

At his lab, Albert is hard at work developing an antiviral agent, but specimen "3-20" being an unexpected failure angers him to the point of shouting his labtechs out. He estimates he only has 3 hours left.

Jade gets an invite to a party at Simon's house, but she is conflicted between going and checking on Billie, who insists on going anyway, deciding that if the disease is fatal then she may as well have fun beforehand. They arrive at a building site where more apartments are being built; drinking tens have been rigged up. After completing a skateboard stunt, Simon introduces himself once more to Billie, who offers to copy the stunt for him and succeeds to an applause.

Having tracked down Jade's address, Angel infiltrates New Raccoon City in a vegan cupcake delivery van, following various people from the town on Instagram to aide in his spying. Elsewhere, Evelyn and Diana are having yoga exercises, but gets a call from Roth about Angel, who they have flagged as suspicious and who Evelyn identifies. Back home, Albert has prepared a drug for Billie, but finds the girls are not at home; he desperately WhatsApps Jade but gets no response.

As night falls, Jade checks in on Billie who is feeling tired but still conscious. While Albert is still searching for the girls, Angel arrives at the party looking for Jade. He is mistaken for a narcotics officer, and the partygoers flee. Having already identified Billie and Jade from Instagram posts, he spots them leaving and confronts them, warning they are in danger. He asks them what they know about the Raccoon City incident - Jade believes it was something to do with a gas leak or a fire, but he insists it was a nuclear attack planned by the US government to cover it up. He demands to get an interview with the two girls and Albert; according to records the two girls do not exist, while Albert should have been dead in 2009. His comments scare the two girls, who flee. When he tries to catch up to them in the street, he is detained by Umbrella security.

Evelyn oversees Angel's interrogation. He calls her out on the disappearance of Susana, and reveals what he knows - that Umbrella moved work on Joy to New Raccoon City, and someone has been infected by a lab animal. Billie and Jade are close to getting home, but Billie begins feeling strange and starts shaking. However, the timer expired five minutes prior, convincing Jade she will be OK. While they want to believe this was all a hoax by Angel, the questions about their father and themselves still linger.

2036 plot A Brotherhood convoy drives their new captives through their territory, on a raid where the state's enemies are crucified upside down. Baxter is happy to be a captive owing to a chip in his arm, and takes the time to joke about Spongebob Squarepants being one of the works preserved by The University.

The prisoners arrive at a prison containing some 300 Zeroes all chained up. Taken upstairs, they are introduced to Felix Mort, who believes "the plague" is God's judgment for man's heresy, with the Zeroes merely the sinners made to kill the others to ensure a just world for the Elect. While in their cells, Baxter teases Jade by suggesting he is working for Umbrella to protect his children Charlie and Cardi, who he reveals are pet dogs. Seeing Jade's anger, he comments she is the same as her "psycho" sister.

Lying around, Jade becomes intrigued by the Zeroes, who are coordinating as a workforce for The Brotherhood, moving a large rotating mechanism to power the prison. They are interrupted when one of the USS troopers is dragged out of his cell and violently cut to pieces by a chainsaw by a man in a burlap sack, who throws the body parts to the labourers as food, one of whom being the "Mother Zero", who's shrieks manipulate the behaviour of the other Zeroes and they begin working once more.

Understanding his coming fate, Baxter persuades Jade to help him with an escape attempt in exchange for being reported dead. The two succeed and rally other captured USS troopers, who recover their weapons from a locker, killing the chainsaw man in the process. The Zeroes are inadvertently let lose, losing and two troopers are lost manning the gate while Baxter fends them off alone while a female operator as Jade runs off with the chainsaw.

While searching for an escape route, Jade is passed by a group of cultists, one of whom revealing the Zeroes are controlled by a mutant woman they found in the Ardennes who he believes to be their queen. With the chainsaw, Jade ambushes the queen and makes a deep cut that burrows within her; she decapitates the queen so she can preserve the head for further study, and continues running as the Zeroes, now uncoordinated, flock towards her. Locking herself up in a room, Jade calls Arjun and hears Bea's voice. She prepares her final words, but the phone cuts out due to low battery. As the Zeroes prepare to break in, Jade tries but fails to start-up the chainsaw, electing instead for a hand grenade, which also fails. As Jade gets up, preparing to manually detonate it at the cost of her life, the door flies open, crushing it and setting it off anyway. The blast kills many of the Zeroes and leaves Jade in a weakened state where she is saved by Baxter. When he is grabbed likewise however she is took weak to save him and escapes up a sewer hatch to the outside, only to be put under an Umbrella spotlight. -->

2022 Jade is still not picking up the phone, though a camera alert confirms they are safe and just stopped at the house. Before he can go to them, Albert is picked-up by Roth and taken to Umbrella HQ to meet with Evelyn, who has punished Simon for his party. Albert is introduced to Angel Rubio, who Evelyn describes as being resistant to being bought into silence but is luckily only believed by conspiracy nuts and "4channers". Albert is ordered to interrogate Angel, but cannot leave to check on Billie when he gets a call. Expecting to get a rise out of him, Angel brings up knowing about him and his daughters, and Albert finally begins beating him in anger.

Back home, Jade continues searching for any evidence to back up Angel's claims. Nothing online suggests anything untoward happening to Raccoon City - it was a simple accident. Jade brings up the glaring problems they have - Albert never talks about his family life, and they do not know the identity of their closed surrogate donors. Billie is still dismissive, but is convinced to at least search for their birth certificates. They look through Albert's room, finding various nondescript documents, copies of Sherlock Holmes books and The Da Vinci Code, parts for a gun and a dog whistle. Under the bed Jade finds Albert's laptop, but it uses a different password to his usual Spock21, and Jade recruits Simon to crack it remotely. He is successful, but finds nothing relating to Raccoon City but does find his computer has a dead-drop which sends an email to Billie warning her to flee should he not input a password within 24 hours. Simon hacks into the cameras to play out one on a loop so they look to be still in the house, while they avoid the other cameras. Drawn to a family photograph, Jade finds a note detailing a traumatic experience Jade had as a clue, which leads them to the piano he played for her to cheer up after she had her tonsils removed. Playing Moonlight Sonata, the final note cannot be played due to something jamming the key, which suggests moving the piano. Doing so, Jade finds a hollow compartment in the floor containing a bag containing $10,000 USD, passports for Billie and Jade as "Anna and Mila Schneider" and a gun for protection. The two begin arguing over the revelations, but come back together after Simon mentions that Jade is only aggressive when it involves something she cares about. With Simon's help, they find an entrance to the basement locked by an RFID chip. Jade gets the idea that the dog whistle is a clue, and the door reads Pedro's collar.

Heading down into the basement, Billie and Jade lose their signal and must go alone. Downstairs they find a lab, and storage boxes containing their childhood toys next to other storage boxes related to Albert's project. Jade finds samples of their blood in storage, and Billie finds a box labelled "RC 1998", containing reports on such things as Lisa and "cognitive response". Billie lifts up the Lisa folder, which reveals a DVD containing footage of a USS operation overseen by Albert to infect Lisa with a sample. Another file describes Albert's intentions to strap Billie to a chair should she deteriorate after 72 hours. Jade unhooks the computer hoping to steal it as evidence, but this triggers an intruder alarm. A fire is started which destroys the research data, which is then put down by gas.

Albert enters the room, angry and confused the two were able to enter the lab. When Jade demands answers to their origins, he gives in: the two were born in the UCSF School of Medicine in San Francisco, using Tara Sutton and Alex Shaum's eggs as donors. Unconvinced he has their best interests in mind, Jade pulls a knife on him, with Billie bashing his head when he becomes enraged. Albert wakes up strapped to the chair, and gives in to interrogation - the dog that bit Jade was infected with T-virus, which causes mutations; Billie appears to be resistant to the virus, He reveals the two girls were genetically modified to excel in mental and physical performances; Umbrella is aware of their origins, and will preserve Billie as a lab specimen if they find out she was infected.

2022 Albert arrives at Umbrella HQ for work, where he meets Evelyn. Lying that he got no information from Angel, Albert suggests mixing Joy and scopolamine to make him suggestive and reveal his secrets. Renewing the interrogation, Albert warns him his methods are designed to be painless but the next man along will be more severe. Angel is offered an out - on a paper he is asked if anyone else knows about Billie and Jade, while Albert verbally asks if he had a source for the animal attack story; Angel replies "no" and is injected with a drug that causes him to go into cardiac arrest and die. Evelyn cancels the interrogation while medical personnel see to Angel, and she accuses Albert of being Angel's mole and has him imprisoned.

The attempts to save Angel's life have failed and he is now in the morgue being examined for any cause of death. The coroner's incision in his chest causes Angel's body to begin convulsing despite prior indications he is dead.

In the last scene of the episode, Albert notices someone else is in the next cell and through a hole in the wall, finds an exact double of himself with a beard.

2036 Jade is locked up in one of Umbrella's bases, and is interrogated by Billie, who is working for Evelyn on her world domination goal. The two have not seen one another since around 2026 when Jade was pregnant, and Albert has since died. Based on Umbrella's information thus far, Jade has achieved nothing of value in the past ten years, and has migrated around the world from Tokyo to Greenland doing nothing. While Jade is aware that Umbrella is a threat to The University, Billie's search for Jade is more of a personal stake - although she is highly-resistant to the T-Virus she is not immune, and ultimately she will deteriorate. Billie gives her the position of a University search team and slices an Umbrella tracking chip from her arm so she can escape freely. Jade collects the severed head of Mother Zero and runs out.

Out in the open, Jade heads towards the coast where she finds a boat. She is ambushed by the search team, consisting of Amrita and Gideon who take her to their ship, carrying Arjun and Bea. While getting cozy in their room, Arjun fills her in on the major events of the past month - they had a good harvest, there is a baby boom and Terrence's University group has recovered half a library's worth of books from Istanbul. Jade is happy to learn of Bea's continuing studies, and compares her parenting style against Albert's, insisting her Zero expeditions are only for Bea's merit and not her own, but this leads to an argument when Arjun hears she deliberately risked herself in the Brotherhood's bunker to get the Zero head, and accuses her of using Bea as a tool to justify reckless behavior.

Elsewhere on the ship, Arjun preparing for dinner with Bea in the cafeteria, talking about her studies with Ms. Kyoko. Jade watches Arjun and Bea talking from a distance, as he tries to explain that Jade loves her, but her life is devoted to saving the world out of a sense of guilt. Jade catches up after the conversation and they get ready for dinner. In the evening, Jade is lying in bed and tells Arjun about meeting Billie and learning of Albert's death.

Following the coastline, the ship passes derelict craft, who's Zero occupants are submerged but still alive, twitching as the ship passes overhead. Jade waits in the lab for the Mother Zero autopsy, with Amrita taking part, who Jade correctly deduces is two months pregnant. The autopsy determines Mother Zero's body is producing two enzymes which degrade upon exposure to Oxygen. Over the night they go through 55 different tests to preserve the enzymes with artificial saliva, with Jade stabilizing Test 56 by spitting in the sample. Jade leaves Amirta alone to attend a performance by the ship's children, led by Ms. Kyoko. Bea performs Beethoven's No. 5 Symphony on the piano as her performance. When she gets a pager call from Amrita, Jade returns to the lab for further research. They introduce T-virus to the enzymes, determining that one has an attractive property and the other a repelling property, meaning that in theory the enzymes could be used to both ward Zeroes away and to order them to attack a target.

With everyone gone, Jade puts the theory to the test and rides out in a boat to the coast to retrieve a Zero woman to study. The Zero is almost frozen from exposure and can barely move, but still represents a threat. Jade is almost caught by Serene, but bluffs her way through the ship, chaining her up in a room. Bea walks in with a mug, with Jade keeping her at the door. Jade cuts her finger to begin the test, expecting to trigger the Zero's sense of smell. Jade's enzyme treatment works in keeping her protected, but the Zero instead turns her attention to Bea, ripping her cuffs and chasing her down a corridor. Bea inadvertently lures the Zero to other people, and she lunges at Amrita, tearing out her jugular before being gunned down. Jade takes responsibility for the attack, and is almost killed by Amrita's partner Paolo. -->

2005 In a flashback to the Arklay Mountains in 2005, Albert "Al" Wesker, Albert "Bert" Wesker and Albert "Alby" Wesker are performing research at an Umbrella outpost. The three are clones of Albert Wesker, a superhuman who is their leader. Despite their genetic similarites they are distinct individuals.

Albert arrives, demanding Alby repair the "mind machine interface" and Al complete work on new prototype equipment ahead of schedule. When he looks to Bert, he notices his desk is messy and he is listening to music; to straighten him out, he takes out a knife and threatens to slice off another finger. They are soon confronted by USS operators who attempt to detain them for their unauthorized use of Umbrella assets. Albert is quick to deal with them using his enhanced abilities, but when more soldiers arrive he changes tactics and decides to kill the clones to prevent them being used; the USS reinforcements arrive faster than anticipated, and he is only able to kill Alby before leaving, with Al and Bert being captured as Evelyn Marcus makes her way into the lab.

2022 In the present, Al and Bert talk through the wall, having not seen one another in seventeen years. Bert has been sealed almost the entire team, with his cell turned into an apartment. Their efforts to bond are short-lived, when Umbrella guards return to take Al out for more questioning, leaving Bert with a suggestion of escaping.

Evelyn interrogates Al, revealing the coroner's verdict Angel was poisoned with three times the lethal dose of Joy and confirming her suspicions he sabotaged the interrogation. She reminds Al that she took pity on his pleading for release and it is because of her he has a life at all unlike Bert, who Al correctly determines is the creator of the Joy variant that causes mind control. In the cells, Bert has killed an Umbrella guard by slashing his neck and wounded a second, who he presses a pillow over to finish off. He has finished shaving, and escapes looking identical to Al. Evelyn tries to plead to Al's ego. Seeing he doesn't care about the money from Joy, she offers it instead as a cure for suicidal impulses.

At school, Billie and Jade talk with Simon, but are interrupted by Bert who has come to pick them up in a stolen car, pounding on the horn to identify who they are. He bluffs his way through questioning about Angel and offers to take them out for food. They are put off by his unusual behavior and erratic driving.

Evelyn's interrogation continues, with her deciding to simply wait out for his body to fail. Due to faults in the cloning and rapid aging process, even Umbrella abandoned work on reliable human cloning. While Al himself requires blood transfusions daily, Bert is on dialysis and requires a cocktail of drugs to get out of bed on good days.

Bert arrives at an Olive Garden where he plans to eat, but his goofy attitude and repeated attempts to avoid any conversation with the girls about Umbrella draws their suspicion that he is drugged. Meanwhile Evelyn arrives for dinner with Simon and Diana as he asks about whether or not to help a friend in need. Evelyn begins putting joy in Diana's drink and passes it to her while on a conversation with Roth about locating Jade and Billie. Simon takes notice.

Back at the Olive Garden, Bert breaks the last straw when he gets angry at a waiter for false advertising in not providing the table with separate unlimited breadstick offers for each customer. He gives in and reveals he and Al are clones and part of an R&D team, but this only convinces the two girls to avoid him. At this point the Umbrella team tracks them down, and Bert uses his fighting prowess to kill three guards, with Roth succeeding in restraining him. The girls are ordered to come with them, but resist.

Billie and Jade are greeted at Umbrella HQ by Evelyn. She tries to relate to them about their experience, saying that her own father was very private and she knew little about him. The two are brought up to the interrogation room, where Al is lying on the floor in pain. Blood samples are taken from the two girls, with Evelyn reveals the truth about their origins - the two girls were created as part of a treatment for Al's condition, with themselves effectively being a permanent source of viable blood for transfusions. When offered a blood sample, Al hesitantly injects himself to recover. At the sight of this, Billie and Jade are allowed to leave, hating him and never wanting to see him again. The girls are last seen sitting in the lobby, where the two reach out and hold hands.

2036 Jade continues her study of the Mother Zero's head, and discovers an Umbrella tracking device embedded within her head, indicating she was a person of interest when captured by The Brotherhood and that Jade is responsible for Umbrella finding the ship. Arjun interrupts her warning that the crew has agreed to hear out a truce with Saquim to go ashore and meet with Evelyn Marcus. He is taken to a tent at a temporary base, where is is introduced to Evelyn, who he last met at Riyadh in 2019. Evelyn quickly cuts to the chase - she wants Jade handed over. He counters that the release of sensitive Umbrella data stolen from Bali in 2022 would reveal to the remaining human population Umbrella's complicity in the pandemic.

Jade is confined in a room. When Bea comes to visit, Jade warns her to get Arjun and a green duffel bag and leave the ship. Soon, her fellow University members return with the results of their dealings with Evelyn and prepare to surrender her. On the shore, Jade is directed by a senior USS commander, Molloy, to their base. There she finds Evelyn, who begins singing and dancing in what is revealed to be Billie using the modified Joy to manipulate her and, unofficially, Billie has been in control of Umbrella for years. She reveals her goals very clearly - she wants Jade kept with her and who will be a source of blood to stabilize her condition, and she wants the University's ship seized, with the latter command issued to Malloy through Evelyn. Realizing she cannot stop the order, Jade releases a vial containing the attractor enzyme; as the Zeroes' sense of smell has heightened over the years, hundreds begin flocking to the base, killing any USS operators in their way. As the University's shore party is not in the tent's direction, they completely ignore them. The ship goes to alert at the sight of so many Zeroes and disembarks, revealing that the ship has had a massive infected crocodile in tow. The Zeroes manage to easily break through the base's perimeter wall and rush towards Billie and Jade, the two reach out and hold hands. -->

2022 An Umbrella security car drops Billie and Jade off at their house, where the plan is to recover some belonging and return to Umbrella HQ to join Al. Bert is brought back to his cell by Evelyn; she tries to keep him working for her by offering the opportunity of a house of his own for completing a new project. At the house, Jade offers escaping using the contents of the bag, and distracts Roth with instructions for caring for Pablo while Billie recovers the supplies. The two make a break for it but are caught up by Roth, who the two resort to fighting, with Billie using her enhanced strength on him and reinforcements.

Billie is captured and taken to Umbrella HQ, where a bite wound proves herself to be the mysterious bite victim Angel talked about. She offers to keep her protected. Jade meanwhile arrives at Simon's house as he becomes concerned of Diana's unusual behaviour, which he realises is the result of Evelyn spiking her. Billie lies on a sofa awaiting results of an emergency test, which determines the T-virus is in her blood but inactive. Evelyn gets a call from Simon accusing her of the spiking, but finally admits it as a necessity and blames it on her mother and not herself. This is enough to convince Simon Jade is right about her. Back at Umbrella HQ, the tech injects Billie with something that makes her convulse.

Ready to escape with Billie, Simon and Jade infiltrate Umbrella HQ. Upstairs, Billie regains control of herself and fights back the labtech, stabbing him in the eye with the syringe and slashing Evelyn. Billie's hallucinations take hold once more and she is attacked by a dog which disappears when Bert snaps her out of it and asks about Al. When he learns of Billie's origins, he sympathises with her, having been created as a tool as well, but urges her to accept her life and see the best in people.

Umbrella HQ's security system has kicked in in response to Billie's escape attempt, and Roth now leads a USS team hunting her with orders to kill. Evelyn joins the group as they expand their search. Billie meanwhile is having problems again, and needs help being directed to their escape. Attempting to get Billie to the door, she becomes distressed and believes she is under attack and bites him, infecting him with T-virus. Simon abandons their group effort and surrenders himself to Evelyn, who executes him rather than hear out Al and Bert's offer of finding a treatment. The two Wesker men kill several operators and drag Billie and Jade out of the building.

The four flee through the parking lot, where they hide from Umbrella security carts and are forced back inside via another door. Al and Bert begin soaking the lab with chemicals to make a bomb. Al asks Bert to go with the girls while he sets it off, telling Bert he deserves a life of his own. He tears of a piece of paper and writes a name for Jade to find. As the three leave, Al is confronted by Evelyn who defends the murder of her own son as a necessity and Al's fault. She shoots him twice, leading him to fall down and set the lighter on. The lab catches fire, and Evelyn narrowly makes it to safety as the whole building goes up in flames.

Resting on the city streets as fire trucks go by, Billie apologises for acting out and Jade reluctantly accepts. Bert comes back with a car to take them away to safety. The fire crew successfully recover Evelyn from the wreckage, but much of the building is beyond saving. From the rubble, Evelyn's new project digs out from below with its claw. Jade meanwhile reads Al's note for her, naming their contact as Ada Wong, who can be found in Akihabara, Japan.

2036 plot A large group of Zeroes continue to make their way through Umbrella's perimeter, and the USS operators take more and more casualties. Billie returns to the tent where Evelyn is, while Jade is dragged out by two operators towards the Zeroes and fights back. Billie activates Umbrella's drones, which begin to wipe out the Zeroes as Jade escapes. Still covered in the deterrent enzyme, the Zeroes ignore her as she heads to the ship, with Arjun throwing a rope for her to climb aboard. To protect themselves should Umbrella succeed, Saqim orders the release of a large mutant crocodile created by Billie as an emergency protection. Billie's drones succeed in wiping out the Zeroes, with the expense of all remaining USS operators who are killed in the cross-fire. Soon, the crocodile makes its way onto land. Back on the ship, Jade realises that Bea is missing and has come to shore on a stolen boat.

Billie runs up hill with the only remaining operator on the ground, who is killed by a stray bullet from a drone as their helicopter takes off. The crocodile is wounded when it tries to eat a self-destructing drone and returns to the sea. It wrecks the low-flying helicopter in the process, and knocks over Jade and Arjun's boat. The two wake up on the shore with Arjun unable to walk. Billie meanwhile succeeds in reaching a second helicopter, which flies high enough to escape the crocodile, but while it pursues the helicopter it notices Bea. As it approaches, however, it senses something about her and calms down, indicating Bea's inherited mutations allow her to influence other mutants. Bea escapes just as Billie's helicopter fires rockets which kills the beast. Bea's running from the explosions leads her back to Jade, and the two are confronted by Billie and the helicopter crew, who wish to take Bea back as a specimen. Billie and Jade talk it out about their experience at Umbrella HQ; Jade considers it the day her sister died, as from then someone else took her place, while Billie sees it as an awakening as she no longer suffers from anxieties and other "bullshit". Jade is unable to shoot her sister, and offers a surrender in exchange for Billie's freedom. Billie instead shoots Jade, deeming her an irrelevance if she has Bea. Jade gets back up right as the helicopter flies over.. -->

Production

Development

In January 2019, it was announced that Netflix was in development of a series based upon the Resident Evil franchise.[10] No major updates were given, until August 2020 when it was revealed that the series had been picked up for 8 one hour episodes.[11] It was also revealed that Andrew Dabb would write the series, in addition to him serving as an executive producer and showrunner. Bronwen Hughes was also executive producer and directed the first two episodes.[11]

Production was originally set to take place from June to October 2020, to be handled by Moonlighting Films, which previously worked on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, these plans were shelved for the rest of the year.[12] Over 2020 the series went through retooling, with the promotion of Jeffrey Howard as co-Executive Producer in place of Dabb who was busy overseeing Grendel. Production resumed on February 19, 2021, with principal photography split into four production blocks and concluding on July 9.[13][14]

Casting

Casting took place in November 2020, with casting directors working in the United Kingdom, United States for the principal cast, and South Africa for the supporting cast and extras. American actor Lance Reddick was cast in the role of Albert Wesker. The role of Billie Wesker was given to American actresses Siena Agudong and Adeline Rudolph, with British actresses Tamara Smart and Ella Balinska cast as her sister Jade. Paola Núñez was cast in the role of Wesker's assistant, Carol.[2] Pakistani actor Ahad Raza Mir joined the cast for the role of Arjun Batra.

Filming

Principal photography took place from February to July 2021. Internal scenes were filmed on a soundstage at Cape Town Film Studios, while dilapidated local buildings such as the Werdmuller Center and the Maitland Abattoir were used for location filming. Production was divided into four production blocks, with directors Bronwen Hughes, Rob Seidenglanz, Batán Silva and Rachel Goldberg each responsible for two episodes each. As part of block 3, scenes were filmed aboard the Sarah Baartman and S.A. Agulhas, with the help of Frog Squad, a company specialising in underwater filming.[15]

Marketing

While Netflix maintained a press embargo on the series before and during principal photography, a synopsis for an early series pitch was accidentally published and then deleted.[16] Similarly, an early copy of the first episode's script was published on the Internet Archive before being taken down in a copyright complaint.[17] The series was officially announced in August 2020, with Andrew Dabb posting the front page of the completed "Welcome to New Raccoon City" script, with the principal cast being announced near the end of filming in June 2021.[1][2]

Marketing for the series proper began on November 30, 2021, with the opening of an official Instagram page for the series, which posted an image of a mutant dog which was set to appear.[18] Two trailers were released online on May 11, 2022, with the first two episodes aired at a private press screening. In attendance, Dabb described the original universe of the show as featuring the video games as their backstory and basis.[19]

Release

The series was released on July 14, 2022, on Netflix.[3]

Reception

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 53% approval rating with an average rating of 5.9/10, based on 34 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "While Resident Evil comes closer than previous adaptations to honoring the beloved video games' labyrinthine lore, this zombie serial could still use more brains."[20] On Metacritic, the first season has a score of 53 out of 100, based on 16 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[21]
