Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, but lost in the second round to Mackenzie McDonald.[1] He was vying to extend his all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. This is the earliest loss of a defending Grand Slam Champion since Novak Djokovic lost to Denis Istomin in 2017.

Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic is vying to equal Nadal's all-time record of 22 men's major singles titles. He is also attempting to become the first man to win ten Australian Open titles, and the second man to make ten titles at a single major since Nadal at the French Open.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament due to a right leg injury.[2]

Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Djokovic, and Stefanos Tsitsipas are in contention for the ATP world No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. In order to become No. 1, Ruud must reach the final, while Tsitsipas and Djokovic must win the tournament.[3]
