This is a sample of some questions asked by new editors about creating an article. Since researching new editor's experiences regarding article creation was mentioned at the Growth Team meeting, I thought I would search for some of what's already out there. Afterall, it is an advantage of having years of archived history like we do. I intend to keep this limited to after the implementation of WP:ACTRIAL because my understanding is that drafts didn't really exist before then the way they do now.

Wikipedia deleted my Draft

I'm pretty mad today because Wikipedia just deleted my draft. My hours of writing, gone. This is my second time writing an article. The first time I tried (also putting in hours of work) it got declined even though I cited all my sources, didn't have any bias, and generally followed all of Wikipedia's rules. My second time trying, It just gets deleted. I don't think I'll be writing anymore, at least not anytime soon. So basically my question is, is there anyway I can get my article back? I doubt you can but I thought I'd ask anyways. Zoltansz11 (talk) 22:28, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

@Zoltansz11 You have no deleted contributions according to your deleted contributions log. What is the title of the article you think was deleted. The draft article you started at Draft:Moses McWilliams is still there. Nthep (talk) 22:35, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
This is the [[1]] that got deleted. There is now nothing there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoltansz11 (talkcontribs)
Zoltansz11, whilst I haven’t checked with in-depth, are you sure you are logged in with the right account? Articles even in draftspace, can be deleted if it meets a criterion for deletion, but that aside, The said deleted draft article doesn’t even show you creating it under this account. Take a look at your contributions, perhaps you created the article via a different account? please you might also want to take a look at our policy on legally operating more than one account. Celestina007 (talk) 22:45, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
@Zoltansz11 There has never been an article Draft:TI-2500, not even one subsequently deleted. Nthep (talk) 23:00, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello, Zoltansz11, I can't find any evidence that a draft called Draft:TI-2500 has ever existed or been deleted. Are you sure that you actually savid ("Published") it? Which account did you create it under? --ColinFine (talk) 22:59, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
You might have forgotten to save it ("Publish"), Zoltansz11. If you moved on out of the editing screen to a different page, your changes would not have been saved. They also aren't saved if you go back on a browser screen to a previous page. While working on a Draft, it's important to save changes on a regular basis to keep your work. Liz Read! @Zoltansz11: Welcome to the Teahouse. While others are inquiring about your second draft, I'll point out that for your first draft you used Wikitree and another Wikipedia article as sources, which are not reliable due to them being user-generated. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:59, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

New Contributor - First submission denied - Lack of Sourcing

Can someone help me successfully add my first submission to Wikipedia? Thank you! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:JackDaniel2022 JackDaniel2022 (talk) 19:59, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

Leaving aside the question of sourcing, you've written this in completely the wrong way. It's far too positive and friendly and eager and praising - practically a hagiography. Be dispassionate and emotionless. Facts only, only facts. DS (talk) 20:11, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
JackDaniel2022 it appears that you have cited sources that don't always reference what you've written. In the Founder section I read: "You’ll find them on stage each year handing out the highly prestigious award for 'Best Flower', as well as on expert speaker panels from coast to coast" and I wanted to know how important was the award you mention. The reference directly after that sentence was about a panel, but didn't mention any awards. The two references immediately before the sentence do refer to judging cannabis flowers, but didn't say that the award was in anyway prestigious. It just said cannabis was being judged. You can't write about a highly prestigious award unless you have a good reference stating that's what it is. When writing a Wikipedia article you aren't allowed to give your own opinions, or mention something you once heard someone say. You can only include data found in reliable published sources. I would suggest you rewrite your draft, and include only what can be found in the cited references. Karenthewriter (talk) 03:14, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

My draft of an article I am posting (first time editor) has been blocked due to an IP that is a web page host.

I am a military historian with two web pages for veterans who served during the same time period can review these historical events. There is nothing commercial about either website. What are my options?217.217.128.83 (talk) 05:11, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Welcome IP editor. Although your specific problem is unclear, I suggest you consider setting up a Wikipedia account. This Teahouse question is the only edit from this IP address, so I can't analyze your earlier work in order to make more specific comments. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:17, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
But as always, the touchstone is independent reliable sources. If there are articles by people unconnected with your websites and published in reliable places such as major newspapers, that talk at length about the websites, then there may be enough material to ground a Wikipedia article. If there are not such sources, then it is impossible to write a satisfactory article about them, and you should not try. It makes no difference at all whether the sites are commercial or not, or how worthy they are. In addition, as the proprietor of the pages, you may have a conflict of interest, and should be very cautious about working on any Wikipedia article about them. --ColinFine (talk) 09:16, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

What to do after your article is speedy deleted

Hey guys,

My draft article Draft:PaykanArtCar has bene deleted due to Unambiguous advertising or promotion. As the topic worths a mention and I wanted to give it another try. Could you advise what's my next step should be? If I create a new article with the same topic and title but the content is improved, would it be still deleted?

Thank you!

KP070707 (talk) 11:43, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

@KP070707 Yes, you can try starting a draft again. If it is deleted depends on how you write it. Citing sources, WP:RS, is essential, WP:TUTORIAL has info on that.
Your first (not only) hurdle is WP:GNG, but I easily found [2][3][4], so that should be a fixable problem. Your task as a WP-editor is to summarize WP:RS, independent of the subject, in your own words. And not WP:FLOWERY ones. This is difficult for someone with a WP:COI, but you can try. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:58, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for this @Gråbergs Gråa Sång. As mentioned in the talk page, let me know if there's a good place for me to share you information that I have. KP070707 (talk) 16:50, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
@KP070707: You should definitely NOT rely on [5], which says (even in the URL!) that it is sponsored content. [6] is also shaky - Bloomberg is usually a good source, but that is the "opinion" section of Bloomberg. ("Opinion" sections vary considerably between newspapers, running the whole range between "anyone who pays enough gets to write their own blog" to "single-journalist job, but from a competent staff journalist").
Whenever I see some suggestion that Bloomberg is good or reliable, I remember the report from Bloomberg I saw on TV years ago that said that NASA had sent a probe to the center of the Sun. What NASA did was to send a probe to orbit the Sun over the Sun's north and south poles; that's rather difficult to do--but it's not downright impossible like sending a probe to the center of the sun, and it's hardly the same thing. Uporządnicki (talk) 13:39, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
@AzseicsoK Did the probe return from the center of the Sun? It must have had some fancy heat-shielding. (Maybe they got confused by thinking about the "center of the solar system".) David10244 (talk) 10:13, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I am surprised that you would offer the first of those sources; surely that was a mistake? TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 17:01, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
@Tigraan You are quite correct, I missed "sponsored", only saw ARTnews. I'll find some NYT and WaPo to replace it with. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:06, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
On the Bloomberg, IMO it's good enough for a GNG-point. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:31, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
KP070707, when Gråbergs Gråa Sång says that "you can try starting a draft again", take that to mean "you can try starting a draft (but not an article) again". You might ask Deb for comments on your draft. -- Hoary (talk) 12:05, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
There is also a quicker "fix". We can redirect PaykanArtCar to Alireza_Shojaian#PaykanArtCar_(2021). Is that ok with you? You can still work on a new draft. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:07, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
KP070707, I see that you had already asked Deb (but hadn't waited for a response) before asking here. -- Hoary (talk) 12:21, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I've got Deb's reply. KP070707 (talk) 16:52, 25 November 2022 (UTC)

I put PaykanArtCar in mainspace. Feel free to improve. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:10, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Page deleted

So I created a page for the technical fest of my college but after being accepted it was deleted. Reason being it's an event but the problem is that there is a category page for these events, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Technical_festivals_in_India There are 30+ pages of the same kind as my page was and there are some pages with hardly any content. The page that I created has citation and was informational but it got deleted anyway. So, I wanted to ask what exactly is different in those pages and my page... Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shoaib Ahmed 00 (talkcontribs) 12:22, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

@Shoaib Ahmed 00: I can't see your article now it's been deleted, so I can't comment in detail on its content, but the reason it was deleted isn't because it's just an article about an event, but because it's an article about an event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant. You can do that by showing that the event has been the subject of significant coverage in multiple reliable sources. As to the existence of other articles, it's best to ignore that - the argument that 'other stuff exists' isn't a good argument for why your article should be kept. It's quite possible that some of those other articles should also be deleted, or maybe they meet the requirements in ways you don't appreciate, but it doesn't matter - ignore them, and focus on making your article compliant with Wikipedia policies. Hugsyrup 12:29, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
@Shoaib Ahmed 00: I have a somewhat alternative view. Examine those other articles (the "good" ones, anyway) to see how they are different from the one in question. Looking at Techfest, for example, it has references to many newspaper articles discussing it in detail. While you don't need that many, maybe three such independent sources that discuss the subject in depth should be sufficient. Also, a short paragraph that compares and contrasts with other such festivals might help both the reviewer, and ultimately the readers of the article, understand how/why the subject is relevant. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:56, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
